      @Average Leader he’s saying that the old world, it’s leaders, and it’s sometimes bureaucratic way of doing things like ending wars is dead and long gone. Russia and America as they knew no longer exists, so what’s the point in continuing the war? There is none, there is no longer a reason to fight each other. with the going to America ending, the people on the sub are Russians and two Americans and guess what, they’re allies with each other; they no longer feel the need to fight with each other because they witnessed first hand what it did to the earth. The only way the war will continue is if someone shoots first and why in the world would someone shoot first?

But as some people reported they hadn't have a choice in the end by their playstyle(or just don't paying any attention to Captain asks) and they got automatically ending with going to USA. You see, if it's gonna be "good" ending by default, why would they give players a chance to do something "wrong" and get "bad" ending, doing actually kind things to Captain and helping him? Right, none of them is bad/good or canonical. 4A got some sense of humour.

    The entire debate about the "nukes" aboard the sub is a silly one. Without the ability to replace the tritium in the warheads, those weapons would be useless after about a decade. Exodus takes place about 5 years after Last Light. Assuming those weapons had fresh tritium in the warheads when Last Light took place, the missile's would only be functional for another 4-5 years. The sub itself would be a potent weapon, true, but not an insurmountable one.
    Hell, Tom's presence with a massive force multiplier like the sub, and an organized assault force led by a trained soldier would actually be of great benefit for the species in the long run, even if a bit tough on the locals in the short term. If Tom could set up a pocket Empire, get things organized and ordered in a local area with access to the sea, he'd be well on his way to restarting a viable civilization. Rome began as a village of fishermen, pirates, and bandit/farmers. The Macedonian Empire began as a collection of warring tribes of barely literate savages that occasionally came down out of the hills and raided/annoyed the Greeks. Most of the ancient nations our civilizations are built upon almost always started out as a bunch of frothing savages that decided art, hygiene, and architecture make things much better then not having those things. Tom might not have been Alexander or Charlemagne, but he definitely had a better plan than anyone else we met. And better yet, his plan seemed to be working, for the most part. Always a plus, that.

    • @Ryan-hx6pm
      @Ryan-hx6pm 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Yeah definitely. But it is highly possible that nobody had the knowledge about the nukes. Both Tom and Klim just cared about having it, while Klim wanted to use it as a show of force, Tom was only interested in using it as a force multiplier, as you said. The Captain however, is another story. He should've known about the nukes', considering he was the captain of the sub. Probably an oversight from the devs.
      Still, it makes total sense that the Captain distrusts Tom, considering his business like attitude, and the fact that they had hostilities before.

      Hydrogen bombs use lithium-6 deuteride. Last time I checked, both deuterium and lithium-6 are stable isotopes, meaning they will never go bad. Now, the plutonium-239 in the fission primary (thermonuclear weapons use a fission bomb to produce the temperatures and pressures needed for fusion) is unstable, but has a half life in excess of 24,000 years. The aluminum the missile is made out of would corrode away before the Pu decayed off.
      So, assuming they could somehow bypass any safeing mechanisms, those were still viable weapons.

    • @vishnu79
      @vishnu79 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@ryanpayne9119 Tritium boosting (more correctly deuterium-tritium boosting) is a technique for increasing aspects of the efficiency of fission devices. It is not a full fusion reaction, although a tritium-boosted fission Primary will be more effective in initiating a fusion Secondary. While boosting itself produces only a slight additional amount of blast, it has a major effect on the neutrons produced by the Primary, and indeed may increase explosive yield of other parts of the Primary.
      When it became apparent that the more neutrons became available from the first fission, however, the idea arose that injecting a small amount of tritium into the fission Primary would not appreciably increase the explosive yield but would greatly increase both the number and speed of neutrons.
      Tritium boosting has a number of significant technical and military advantages, which explain why it is used in essentially all modern militarized nuclear weapons, including in the UK, US, Russia, Israel, India, Pakistan, and North Korea.These advantages comprise:
      high efficiency with relatively low compression and thin reflector/tamper;
      low weight and small size;
      intrinsic safety capability (zero or negligible yield when the tritium is not in the weapon
      Tritium is a radioactive isotope with a half-life of 12.355 years. Its main decay product is Helium-3, which is among the nuclides with the largest cross-section for neutron capture. Therefore, periodically the weapon must have its helium waste flushed out and its tritium supply recharged. This is because any helium-3 in the weapon's tritium supply would act as a poison during the weapon's detonation, absorbing neutrons meant to collide with the nuclei of its fission fuel. Thus, any modern thermonuclear weapon, if left un-maintained, will become unusable after about 12 years.
      Attempting to detonate the fission Primary on the weapon would result in a sub-nuclear explosion, and would fail to initiate the necessary first stages of fusion. You'd get a bigger explosion from a thermobaric weapon or even a large conventional bomb.

There really isn’t any reason to, considering the submarine and soldiers he has is more than enough to show authority to other coastal settlements. Sam even says this during the US ending that there would be no way another nuclear war would kill the world considering the world is already dead. Also who knows what tom would do? He may seem nice but he could lose his cool one day and use the nukes. Plus its safer to destroy it because the sub could be hijacked. Let me explain to you why I personally think that the ending in which Sam goes to America is the good ending, well first of all, that's not the only nuclear submarine in the world, and Tom certainly isn't one to do something soo stupid especially since he is soo much of a peacefull character from all points of view, by the way, the captain is old and ex-military and of course the thought of an american obtaining a nuclear sub would make him anxious, there' absolutely nothing one single submarine can do to further damage the entire world anyways, so if you ask me the good ending is where Sam gets to America, also why the hell would he risk his life going all alone to Vladivostok and then he doesn't pursue his wish any further and stay longer to do absolutely nothing with his life. Its like going around carrying a gun. Why wouldn't you want to use it at least once if you think it's worthy ?
      Also, what is stopping him from using it, aside from his moral compass, which could spin around wildly in a post apocaliptic world where no one really have the autority to stop him ?
      Also if you read the first metro 2033 it clearly stated that most of the surviving sub went crazy and started raiding/launching nukes on former enemy objectives/ failed to keep an jncredibli complex mechanism like a nuclear sub afloat in a nice environment such as the post nuclear apocalypse.

    Destroying the sub is "the morally good" ending for multiple reasons:
    - First the monologue of SAM : "I've been doing what I've done for the last 20 years.. Saving the world..."
    - Secondly, let's say you don't destroy the sub, you get to a wasteland of America. He hopes to see his father, but he must realise, the chances of that are almost impossible, for obvious reasons.
    - Thirdly, the way the "destroy sub" ending.. well ends... with "one day", is exactly how the ending in Metro 2033 ended (with Artyom hearing the signal on top of the tower). I think 4A games wants to do more here (or they should).
    - Forth, the damn pirate flag. I am not sure Tom can overwhelm the urge to "push the button" if someone doesn't "comply".
    - Lastly, I do understand why everyone loves the "just want to get home" feeling (I am also inclined to do it), but doing something like that for the wrong reasons with potentially huge consequences.... Is not in my book! (Ted was right! He didn't used the sub in the "Last War" and it shouldn't be used now to promulgate the agenda of a thief... err "businessman" that Tom is).
    I do have to agree though: This is epic and awesome writing for you! Having to pick sides and debate the moral choices and why each ending is justified! (Both are from different points of view! But I can clearly say there is no good/bad ending here as both are "bittersweet").
    Cheers!

      Well what I want to know is why people assume exodus takes place 5-6 years after last light. I mean the game is based of 2035 and last light took place in 2034 while the 2034 book artyom(not 2033 or 2035 artyom) was doing his shit. And since it is based on 2035 that means that it must take place somewhere in 2034-2035 so let's just say 2033's story since in Artyom's time only lasted a week and a few days and was in winter then it must have been early in the year 2033 for it to still be winter. Then a year later last light takes place and it's still winter so possibly the beginning of the year 2034 and the exodus starts out in winter. Late 2034 maybe and ends in winter(at least for when you control artyom) so possibly late 2035 and the epilogue is 2036's spring. Thus making Artyoms full journey take 3 years to pass. Making him 22-24 remember he was an infant when the books fell so he cant be older then that. He was 20 in 2033, 21 in LL and possibly 22 in exodus. But if he was 1-2 which is considered a toddler he'd be 21 or 22 in 2033 but its literally said that he had just turned 20 so hes around 22 years old. And now let's take into account Anna. They both fell in love with eachother during Last light and got married in between LL and Exodus which they wouldn't need to date or be engaged first because in Metro you could die at any time cause of the dangers. So there is my theory

    Given the fact the game developers spent more time on the coming to America ending, I consider it the canon one.
    Also, remember the tape you play for the Cinephile achievement? It talks of an established trade relationship between San Diego and the Russian port you start in.
    Only makes sense to me that they restart that trade relationship between Russia and America anew, using the sub to carry people and resources back and forth. It'd be a genuine rekindling of civilization, but through trade and cooperation. The threat of using the sub as a bargaining chip loses its need.

    This is DLC about one thing. Choice. You make it and you live with its consequences till the rest of your days. Life is sad thing too in most of ways, and often there are no "good" or "bad" things, right or wrong. Just some choices which everyone has to do.
    Pretty sad DLC, it was hard to watch Sam destroying his dream, but saving whole settlements of people from pirates and other scum who can use one day nuclear missile.
    In my opinion, as you already got it, there is no canonical ending from devs point of view.
    But.
    This is Sam story. Not yours. Not mine. If I were in such situation, I would do everything for making my dream true. Even nowdays, I would give almost everything(my aim is pretty similar to Sam's one). But I am not Sam.
    After hours of thinking I feel like Sam would blow up that submarine(like 50.1% probabilty vs 49.9% of going home with nuclear pirates) . Because that he is - spartan, protector of people, just a good guy, who used to do good things. And even after doing this he doesn't surrender. And I believe he would try another way to get home till the very end . But it's seemed that he lost his last chance. It's conflict between the man he is and the man he wanna be.
    This DLC actually requires you to make the choice like Sam would do.
    But we will never know what Sam would do, and that's beatiful.

      choosing to side with tom(maybe it isnt a choice sam would make) is a better option in my opinion. even though sam was said to be a brutal leader in terms of his treatment with those who wouldnt cooperate with him, he was still praised or atleast forgiven by the people of vladivostock as you hear them in some conversations talking about how even though hes harsh, he still brought order and greater levels of cooperation to the city. yeah maybe tom might use a nuke or two(which is unlikely considering how klim turned against him because he didnt want to really use any nukes), siding with tom still gives humanity, or atleast some parts of the earth a chance to rebuild society through greater levels of order and cooperation brought by tom. after hearing about how unbelievably harsh and chaotic vladivostock was(like the rest of USSR and probably USA plus europe too) before tom arrived while hearing some of the inhabitants talking, id say tom did a pretty good job at bringing order and cooperation to the city which looked impossible considering the odds.

The language Sam uses to describe his thoughts in the 'no trigger' ending, is pretty loaded, but neither choice seemed morally certain. I chose the ending to not blow up the ship, and I feel like that was the morally better choice to make. Let me explain:
    The Captains entire problem with the sub crew wasnt with Tom. He even admitted to liking him. It was Klim. Klim was the issue and the Captain wanted him gone, while Tom simply just disagreed. However, at the very end, Klim BECAME Toms problem as well, and the Captain and Tom didnt have a reason to "hate" eachother. Klim became the common enemy and after Sam killed him, there was honestly no real reason to go after Tom either. Tom treated Sam and the Captain with nothing but respect and showed immense trust towards them as well. It was always just Klim that was the problem, but he got dealt with, so the problem was done. Tom, and his men, wasnt a threat anymore and thus there was no need to blow the ship up. Could Tom have used the nukes on board? Maybe, but thats the risk Sam had to take with a fresh ticket home to the US. It was either take the risk, or just not go home. There was nothing else he couldve done.
    Why kill Tom and the whole crew, when it was just Klim who was the problem? Thats all Im saying here.

      Tom's entire idea is to use the sub to threaten communities into complying with what he wants. He wants to rebuild civilization, sure, but according to HIS way. This is inherently flawed. While it might work in the short term, you only have to look at the fall of the Roman Empire to see that the exact same thing would happen eventually. Tom isn't going to be around forever. Once he's out of the picture, how long is it before the communities just leave, or his leaders start fighting for control of the sub? He might not have been willing to push the launch button, but other people surely are.

Hansa or whoever put up those jammers around Moscow claimed that NATO was still around and had invaded Russia, but that turned out to be a lie. In all likelyhood, the US, and the rest of the world for that matter, are probably as destroyed as Russia. The entire world suffered from nuclear winter, and the US in particular was hit by Russia's nuclear arsenal. It also seems to me that 4A's intention with Metro's world is that no country or institution survived the war, that everything was destroyed and "reset". I'll be disappointed if I turn to be wrong, it'd be lame if it turned out that a country survived or something. The whole point of Metro to me was that the world ended, and humanity only barely survived. Anyway, sorry, I'm rambling.

    • @jirkahudak3
      @jirkahudak3 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@pruttisman Well it could have been realistic to have some countries surviving and i would even say realy interisting. Take for example Switzerland, small country that is in no military pact and has no nukes. Both sides have money in their banks and would not want to possibly have their fortune destroyed, for both sides would propably use the nukes as a means to somehow win the war, or to basicaly damn their opponents if one was clossing to it´s end. And so why would you nuke it? The more interisting part is of course that any state with infrastructure and some form of military will be basicaly catapulted into becoming the sole superpower in it´s area, and with the thining of resources and basicaly no oposition, switzerland can either unite the survivors or conquer them. And it will basicaly have to because it will want to sustain itself. And that does not just include countries, basicaly anything with organised military force that somehow survives and does not shatter into bands of unorganised brigands or canibalise itself, will become a powerhouse in it´s teritory, be it some naval group, division, military base, and of course not every nuke will detonate. Which could lead to some realy bisare parodies of modern, and historical gowerments. Because no matter what, if humanity survives, it will try to get back where it was.

    How in the world the good ending is the bad one, and the bad one isn't the good one?
    So in good ending you kill Tom, who trusted you, and an entire crew, just because the captain is paranoid because of another nuclear war in an already damned world, which tbh, it wouldn't make any sense to nuke an already nuked world, but in bad ending you will have all alive, and you will even go home.
    Sure, Tom is a weapon's dealer and such, he can use threat to people he doesn't like, but also, Sam is around to stop him, and the crew still have people loyal to the Captain, so it would be some civil war right there if Tom is crossing a line.
