The dead city was always bone chilling for me. A true radioactive wasteland with ruthless storms, blood chilling cold,, horrifying mutated forms of life, and every building shell haunted by the spirits of the dead. Going above ground was a death sentence. Everything there either dead or dying... the brief glimpse of what the Moscow Metro almost became and what Artyom had helped to prevent always in the back of the mind as I wandered this particular slice of irradiated hell.

I always thought it was a bit strange how effective the Nuclear weapons were in terms of lasting radiation in Novosibirsk. IRL you would pretty much just need to wear a mask and some thick clothing and you could walk around in Moscow fine.
      EDIT TO EXPLAIN FULLY:
The threat of nuclear fallout is not the radiation touching your skin. Background radiation can be very high, but simple contact with your body won't kill you quickly.
That isn't to say it isn't SAFE, it just isn't particularly lethal. After 20 years, the radiation will be nowhere high enough to give you radiation poisoning (EVEN IF IT'S A COBALT SEEDED BOMB!). After 40 years in the Metro you would likely develop cancer, which is common in the books. However since most die to mutants, background radiation honestly isn't a big deal.
The ACTUAL threat in irradiated areas is dust and other breathable particles. If you breath these in, they will get into your vital organs (lungs) and kill you VERY quickly.
That is why you HAVE to wear a filtered mask, like they do in the games.
It's why hair products cannot be used in nuclear fallout, because the dust will linger in the hair after you leave.
So while a mask would be mandatory, clothing wouldn't really matter (within reason). What matters more is that you decontaminate those clothes to make sure no dust is left on them.
There isn't really a good reason to explain why Novosobirsk is so dangerous, but it doesn't really matter.

The Novosibirsk level was definitely one of my most memorable experiences in a videogame. The build-up to it was perfect as well - you and Miller had to go to it for Anna's sake, but you fully knew how unbelievebly high the radiation levels were. You even thought of other alternatives to fixing Anna's condition, but eventually it all led to Novosibirsk. Mutants and opposing human factions is something Artyom never really had an issue dealing with, because they are enemies that can you can fight back. But how can you fight deadly amounts of radiation? Playing the Dead City level kinda made me imagine how the liquidators of the Chernobyl NPP felt in 1986 - utterly helpless, but determined not to give up.

I agree with you the dead city was very unsettling and a weird way it felt like someone or something was watching you through your journey in the dead city. But even through all that artyom never stopped he kept on going even with the mass amounts of radiation poison and the blind ones or lost ones. I hope in the next metro game artyom can talk in the actual game instead of just in the loading screen.

Besides, Kirill has nowhere to go, since Miller was the one retrieving the map. Cobalt bombs were also called "salted bombs" and were supposedly only theoretical. The objective was to create a weapon that could siege your enemies for years after deployment. The cobalt is changed into cobalt 60, which has a half life of just over 5 years.
The half life makes it impractical to wait out the short term high intensity radiation in bomb shelters while still producing enough of it to kill anyone who is caught outside. The name comes from the phrase "salting the earth" which prevents plant growth

    • @pavelslama5543
      @pavelslama5543 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Yeah, the game isnt realistic. Even IRL, the nuke winter was basically made up, and even if humanity managed to somehow create enough bombs to create it, there is no way that it would last for decades. The danger of nukes IRL isnt in what happens in the short term, or the long term, but the mid term (1-5 years). After some 10 years the site of a nuke explosion should be rid of any dangerous levels of radiation and should be navigable even without protective gear.
Cobalt bombs were designed to push back that safe stage, and prolong the dangerous stage, but even then, you should be easily able to half the amount of green stuff rations for everyone after 5 years, then half it again after another 5, and after 5 years, everyone would basically require 8 times less than when the bombs fell. But again, Metro (book) is a metaphor for the Russian society (thats why they are banned in Russia), not a study of the post war effects on the society and nature.

I know that it would be insane to design a game that large with the detail they put into the Metro games. Novosibirsk was always a source of fascination for my in Exodus due to how ultimate it's destruction it was. Moscow, horrible as it was, allowed for life to live on the surface. Novosibirsk, on the other hand, was allegedly hit harder than all the other targets in Russia. I didn't understand why it had been hit so heavily. Now however, I have a better idea. The city was not innocent as it turned out; they were creating bio-weapons and by extension, a cure of the weapon's effects controlled only by them. Good god man... Horrendous.

If all three games played like Exodus, I would play Metro nonstop forever and ever.

Novosibirsk got hit during the evacuation process of the city, as can be seen due to the sheer number of abandoned Military vehicles and the fact that Miller also said so.
Like Moscow, those lucky enough to be in the underground tunnels of the Metro would've survived the initial blast but would soon succumb to the amount of radiation left behind.
Though it is unknown to how hard Novosibirsk was bombed it was supposed by one of the crew members (forgot his name even though I just beat the game) that the city was hit harder and also was bombed with a Cadium Bomb, which essentially is a Nuclear bomb that leaves behind even more Radiation.
When Artyom and Miller first get to the City, it's outer buildings seemed to of survived the initial blast as well though was still damaged, once inside the Metro system of the city there appeared to of been no one left alive until we reach further down into the Metro and find a execution chamber and then a battlefield, It seems that the Habits of Moscow's Metro also reached Novosibirsk just on a much larger scale. There are armored carts that strangely enough look exactly like the Panzer carts that the Reich's use in Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light, however we do not see any Reich Soldiers, just old Corpses with rags.
As for the people that were in this Metro system it was stated that the Government had managed to also survive the bombings and took control over Novosibirsk Metro and were apparently very hostile to anyone who dared to oppose them, this of course lead to riots which is also the cause of the abandoned battlefields we see in Exodus.
On the surface there is nothing but abandoned buildings and spirits of the dead, a true hell that Novosibirsk became. All that's left of the buildings is the ghostly reminders of what happened on that fateful day in 2013.
Nothing but haunted abandoned buildings with corpses and mutated monsters ready to pounce on you as soon as they get the chance.
The city is a dead, haunted hellhole. It was no question to why people stay away from it...

A door being left unlocked, or a stalker stepping into the wrong building, small seemingly inconsequential actions bringing the end to whole generations.
