I think all those people that attended the dinners should have at least been expelled from school and been barred from ever becoming lawyers. They all contributed in his death by not saying anything to law enforcement or to Joe.

There was NO justice in this case! This is so f***ed up. Everyone failed him. All of the people that knew about Anu’s plan to end Joe’s life and didn’t say or do anything. And the lack of sentences handed out to Anu and her friend is mind-boggling. Neither of them should have been allowed to obtain a law degree after committing murder. And harsher sentences should have been given to those involved. 💔

Technically, I suppose, the girlfriend (I don’t know how to spell her name nor do I think it bears repeating) could be charged for murder again since the judge found her not guilty by reason of diminished capacity, but attempting to bring new, substantive evidence that she faked diminished capacity, that she was of sound mind at the time of the murder, would be near impossible. Since a judge made the initial determination, it carries more gravitas. Also, she has “crazy bitch” eyebrows. It would be difficult to convince anyone that a person who does that to her face is anything but cuckoo bird.
I don’t believe in karma - it’s another human construct that puts chaos into some type of order - but I wish for her the same life she allowed Joe.

This case is so outraging, not just at what Singh did to Joe and her friend buying the drugs for her to use on Joe but also the fact that all the other law students knew what she is going to do to him and didn't even bother to warn Joe about it and they're just as bad and guilty as her.
Also the fact that Singh only received 2 years in prison as well as leaving to go to university in Sydney and awarded that doctorate award is just an insult and a slap in the face to not just Joe but also his family too.

This judge had to be paid off, right?! That is absolutely asinine. Sometimes it still blows my mind that there are people in my country who are serving life sentences on non-violent, minor drug charges. Meanwhile, murderers in other countries are out on the streets again, sometimes even given the protection of a new name and/or identity, and don’t even require constant follow up to make sure they haven’t gone off the rails again.

A lot of it depends on the case made by the two parties, she probably had a good defence lawyer, the judge can only know what is presented to them
@@tima1520 I mean, I can’t imagine what the defense would have to say in defense of this that couldn’t possibly be corroborated. He wasn’t abusive whatsoever and she was deliberately seeking out information to fool people into thinking she was mentally ill. It feels much more likely that her wealthy parents bribed the judge and that’s why they chose to have the judge decide the case vs a jury.
I do agree on the follow up thing. Mandatory therapy sessions in jail AND after jail at least once a week/two weeks. And if they don't show up, they can be sent to jail again. But also there is this thing that ppl think criminals of violent crimes aren't able to change which is a way to stigmatize mental illness or generally look at ppl as "naturally evil" thus incurable.
Anyway, our current legal system in most of the world is shit cause we don't change the reasons, the root of WHY ppl become violent criminals: mental issues, questionable societal beliefs, financial struggle etc and instead we treat symptoms of these issues.... the criminals, by either executing them or throwing them in jail for life. Which does not have any effect on crime rates. Rates do not decrease because your country's criminals all have life sentences or are on the death row.

As a parent, seeing Joe’s mom talk about having to bury the boy she birthed, raised, and loved was heartbreaking. I pray that they find some peace and somehow are able to heal after this horrible event.
Yep- We mom's always think: "That could've been my baby boy". This is just too much.
But they do have another son. It seemed like in this story, he just dropped off the radar and disappeared.
I hope the other son is able to find some peace, even though the parents have been sentenced to hell for the rest of their lives. Judging by their grief, I don't think they will ever draw another breath that is not filled with pain and thoughts of their murdered son.

Unfortunately you can't charge and judge someone for a crime twice one of the principles of most modern judicial systems. There are cases that should be exemptions. But the law is the law. I totally agree he was faild and he deserves justice. Real justice. I feel no pitty for that "lady", doing drugs is a choice (a poor one nevertheless, but still a choice).

Everybody talks about how intelligent (book smart) Anu Singh is, but her real skill is her ability to manipulate people. She gives the phrase "master manipulator" a whole new meaning. Poor Joe didn't stand a chance against her. Joe, from what I've read, didn't have a lot experience with woman; which made him easy pickings for Anu. I'm American and this case has stayed with me ever since I first heard about it years ago. I've also read the book by Helen Garner. If this crime had occurred in the U.S, Anu Singh would be doing 15 years in prison MINIMUM due to calculated nature of the crime. Anu Singh murdered Joe Cinque, and then the Australian justice system let her off with a slap on the wrist.

I just said I think she would've gotten a more fitting sentence based on the fact that the murder was not a crime of passion, but rather a devious, well-planned crime. The fact that she'd been telling people for months that she wanted to kill Joe, speaks to this; and that would've been taken into account when sentencing her had the crime occurred in the U.S. It's like Australian justice system chose to completely ignore the fact that Anu Singh planned the murder down to the smallest detail. It's for this reason that (I think) she received the shockingly light sentence for what she did under the Australian system. I still think the Australian justice system failed Joe Cinque and his family, but that's just my opinion.

I've heard this case before and it has lived rent free in my mind ever since. I study Psychology and Criminology with the hopes of doing a masters in Criminal Psychology--it's my passion to understand criminals motives etc but not a single part of this case makes sense to me. I don't know why it happened, nor why nobody tried to intervene its the most nonsensical thing I've ever heard. Genuinely terrifying.

I have to say at least her parents were trying to seek help even though they were not aware of the extent of danger she imposed. But as far as everyone else, what the actual hell! The judge should be ashamed. Clearly bragged about her ability to get out of it and both of their knowledge of law should've been taken into account. I'd be angry as hell. No parent should bury their child. I imagine those verdicts were just as hard to take as his loss... Tragic all the way around. How are any of these people practicing law???

@@rooder8827 Yes and no. A mental illness does not necessarily equate insanity. When you have the ability to plan for months on end you may still be mentally ill but not insane. Someone who is insane also don't have the ability to realize that. However a mentally ill person can question their sanity. That ability to question is what differentiates the two. But anyhow the point I was making is her parents saw her struggle with the mental illness and tried to get her help. Had they been told by her what she was telling everyone else they could have had her admitted on an emergency basis. They didn't have that knowledge. So therefore they couldn't. Often in these cases the parents look the other way...

I'm so glad you covered this case, my mum Robyn was one of the witnesses a couple years before I was born! She was studying social work at ACU at the time which is another Canberra university and she knew Anu, I think they were just acquaintances. She testified in court for Anu's solo trial about a really weird conversation they had in passing where Anu was saying she was having strange violent feelings/urges. So my mum asked if she meant she wanted to hurt animals or something? Then I think that was the end of their conversation, you can read about this in the book. She didn't know Joe or anything else that was going on. So strange of Anu to just mention things like this to my mum who was just this random other student who didn't even go to that university, they weren't even good friends at all and it was just out of the blue. (*I'll see if I can ask mum more about this and edit this comment if there's anything else*) This is the most infuriating case and so devastating for Joe's family and friends, absolutely tragic.
I just wanna give Joe's parents a big hug, they seem like the most lovely people and so did Joe. How some people end up on death row for crimes they didn't commit and this chick only got two years for something so cold blooded seriously baffles and infuriates me wow

So she actually didn't even have to serve a two years "prison sentence", but got free food and accommodation, supplied by taxpayers, while attenting university and a degree in criminology on top?!

I have severe anxiety, insomnia, and depression and borderline traits and have never ever in my life attempted to kill another person nor have I wanted to. That argument is bs and if her mental health caused this then she should not be around other people at all, period.

This case is genuinely infuriating. The anger and heartbreak Joe’s parents must feel has to be crippling. I listen to a lot of true crime and this is probably the most unjust case I've heard. So incredibly unfair. Anu Singh deserves life in prison without the possibility of parole. Everyone else who was complicit or helped with his murder should have been charged too.
I've been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and major depressive disorder and I've never done hard drugs or drugged anyone else. Please don't let stories like this further stigmatize those diagnoses in your minds.
People that do this type of evil act have a human “chip” missing. Mental illness is everywhere unfortunately these days, especially after covid. I personally suffer(ed) bulimia, depression, anxiety, OCD & other eating issues. I also would never hurt another human being. Keep yourself safe & know you are not alone.

This aggravates me beyond an imaginable point. Knowing justice is not served for millions, and we protect the criminals more than the victims is disgusting. This really is a STRONG point for the death penalty, law reform, and a better vetting process for judges in our system. The fact there is no justice for the family is tragic.

After the evidence is 100% covered and confirmed, she could be sentenced to that for all I care. I'm sick of seeing extremely evil individuals consuming resources for years, and being allowed to experience the gift of living another day, while the victims die a torturous death and their family is broken forever. We let a successful man with a potentially great contribution to soceity die, and a psycho killer get off scott free for killing him. Add to that, the justice system failed to deliver any form of justice. It often doesn't in certain matters as this, and killers abuse the "insanity" plea to get off free with barely any accountability.
