Can we just talk about the teacher that stayed by Anns side? How traumatic that must be holding another fellow teacher in her last moments...it was so sweet and just amazing of her to make Anns last moments comfortable and just letting her know how much of an impact she made in her students and the people around her...I started crying in that part

So tragic and in my opinion something could have been done prior of anyone actually shared their concerns (I don’t know how it could have been brushed off esp when he started showing his knife in class after expressing his hate for her for so long). It absolutely could have been prevented. The kids who saw the knives at school should have said something. Saying something about killing a hated teacher is one thing but when the would be murderer shows up with knives in the class of the said teacher...... I mean come on.

I mean yeah it’s easy to say that in hindsight from the comfort of your home, but we don’t know what it’s like to see a classmate pull a knife out and start being violent
because he showed them the knife like two seconds before he went in and did it. don’t blame the kids they’re probably traumatised for life
But even the messages beforehand? They definitely should’ve told someone.
i'm not one to snitch but after parkland (which was really close to my highschool) it scared the shit out of me and after that let me see someone showing off a knife that was sketchy im snitching im not about to give that person a chance to do anything
This could have been prevented on so many levels. Fourteen to sixteen years old is old enough to know that his actions and statements were wrong.
Exactly! Those kids should have reported that Will was threatening the teachers and had bought knives to school. What a POS he is. No excuse for his behaviour at all.

He showed them the knife just minutes before. They didn't have time to report it. I'm sure they had in mind to tell someone as soon as it was SAFE for them to speak. Considering all the school murders, you try being a teenager that gets up as soon as you see a knife to report it. Watch how fast YOU end up dead. People like you need some common sense and ask "what was going through their minds when they saw the knife?" I'm sure many of them thought "I want to report him for bringing a knife because he's obviously serious about this but if I get up right now and walk away or start screaming then he'll most likely kill me for trying to stop him. As soon as I'm away from him and safe then I'll speak up". Easy to pass judgement as an adult safe in your house and not a teen in a classroom next to a guy with a knife that might kill me if I get up right now to report it.

I agree. Around this time, I was in high school and had a guy in my year like this. We were ALL on high alert, from as soon as we realised he was a little off until we finished high school. You can't report someone for just "being a bit weird," but you can keep an eye on them and report any threats as soon as possible. The guy in my school sharpened his fingernails into little points to scratch people, and said all sorts of weird incel type things, but nothing that could ever get him prosecuted (he went through with scratching someone with his freaky little nails and got disciplined by the school but that was it). Still, from 14-18 years old we were all on high alert, across all friend groups, 'cliques' etc. Even my high school bully was like yeah we need to watch out for that guy. Why so many people said they thought it was a joke when he was actively making threats about this woman is insane to me. Disliking your teacher is one thing, actively telling people you want to kill her is TOTALLY different.
Sad how Will’s father is enabling him to have a victim mindset, trying to paint Will in a better light. WILL IS NOT THE VICTIM. He wanted that life, he got it. He is not remorseful, scared, and he deserves to be isolated.

"oh he's so sad and isolated" - yeah, the kid that said he wanted to go to prison so he could be comfortable found out it wasn't as nice as he thought. That's all there is to it. The prison staff say he doesn't show an ounce of remorse and they see him every day, whereas he only has to play the victim to his dad once a month. I know parents can have a certain blindness in cases like this but he's really just projecting his own feelings onto his son.

I think Will's dad is delusional. It's readily apparent that Will was fully conscious of what he was doing before and after the murder. Will is a psychopath and should never be let out.
Agreed. Whether or not they ever thought he would actually go through with it is beside the point. They knew there were significant problems and you can’t convince me otherwise. For starters, I guarantee that he started acting out when he was diagnosed with T1. That’s extremely common in kids and it can cause some very uncharacteristic behaviour. But there are so many other ways I believe he’s either delusional or sugarcoating it.
The parents are always in Denial. Jeffrey Dahmers was the same. The common denominator with these serial killers are enabling parents, crappt childhood, etc.
And this young creep is very obviously selectively manipulating those he thinks could help him get out, like his parents, but shows his real face in front of those who he can't profit from, like the prison guards.

As a language teacher for the same age range, this case hits particularly close to home. Most of my students are great, but the chance that one will turn on you is never zero. And it’s terrifying. I hate that being a teacher has become a job where you have to worry for your safety.
The way Ann’s family was treated is truly baffling and it’s frustrating to know that the school didn’t even reach out to them to try to give an explanation or even send their condolences for something that happened IN CLASS. She should have been safe in her classroom safe in that school but she wasn’t yet they couldn’t even take the time to reach out to her family. It shows how fucked up the school system can be, how ignorant they can be when something this tragic happens. Ann’s family deserved better, Ann deserved better after teaching there for all of those years. It’s very clear that Will was becoming unhinged.. he showed the knives to classmates that he planned on using to murder someone!! He doesn’t deserve to ever be released or to live in society again. If just one person said something maybe this never would have happened.
Agree 💯 with you. This whole situation is totally baffling. The council found "there was no way it could have been prevented" ???? It definitely seems to me that imo Will's parents have some influence in Leeds just my opinion, it's totally unfair. School should be closed because of the "cover up". Definitely needs more investigation

I was at this school when this happens and the school did reach out and held events in her name. Her funeral was also at the church right next door. However I do agree it should not have happened
Justice was not done in this case. He should stay in prison. He is a danger to anyone who he decides he doesn't like. Sickening absolutely sickening.
If Will is old enough to commit premeditated murder, he is old enough to stand alone in the court room.
Will's parents being shocked that their son was capable of murder and calling him a good kid sounds SO familiar. In the recent school shooting at Uvalde, Texas, the shooter's parents said the same thing about their young son-- calling him a great kid. It just breaks my heart and confuses me how parents could not see the signs. Children send subtle cries for help to parents, but sometimes adults are too busy with work/life stress to see what's in front of them. Praying for healing for Will's parents, Ann's family, and all witnesses to this horrible tragedy.
When I was a very young, I was diagnosed with depression and sometimes it came out as anger, delusions and paranoia. My mom always made sure to sit me down and ask me if I had ever wanted to hurt myself or others when she saw signs that I wasn't doing well. The many therapists and experts I saw asked the same and my mother did a good job making sure I got the help I needed. I was never a danger to others and the scarier parts of depression eventually fade in kids. But it absolutely is possible to see the signs and prevent anything from happening. Kids just need help and someone paying attention.

True. Anyone that's capable of such evil acts, aren't good kids. Apparently, many of them are so used to getting their way with everything and their parent's won’t hold them accountable, instead they make excuses for their kids, deny their behavior, or point the finger of blame away from their child and onto someone else.
Never under estimate the power of denial, especially parents towards their children.
Parents nowadays (and by nowadays I mean since about 20/15 years ago until now) don't give a crap about their kids. They don't know their kids. They barely talk to them. I know this economy is difficult and everybody tries to work very hard in order to make money and provide for their family but if parents can't save some moments of their day to get to know their kids and talk to them then they shouldn't have kids.
That's probably why he wanted to join the army..thinking of it as authorised violence. Once he didn't get that outlet, he got fixated on a person. I doubt very much he regrets what he did.

As a 14 or 16 year old I would have spoken up. I cannot believe none of the kids said anything!! He should absolutely never be released, murder should ALWAYS carry a life sentence. This definitely could have been prevented if people had spoken up.
I definitely agree. At that age I knew that even speaking of something so serious, wasn’t a joke. I have two girls, they will always be taught no matter if someone seems like they’re joking, always speak up

The fact that she was simply doing her job. That’s what gets me. She went the extra mile for students and he just didn’t like her, which could be fair enough. But to take her life, steal her from her family. She was a temporary person in his life. He never would have seen her after college. So unnecessary and disgusting
I spent my life teaching middle school. Out of the thousands of kids I taught, I was threatened by only one. So much so that I wrote his name down and told staff as well as my family his name and address. I said, If I end up dead or missing...he's the one. I've never before or since been so scared. That young man looked THROUGH me as he threatened me.
I got threatened by a 8 year old kid once. The school did not nothing, was such an odd kid. I feel for every victim of 'weird lonely kid' to think that could of been me 😞
I have also only been scared of one of my students so far. My gut feeling towards him was this kid could be a school shooter.
I wonder if he went on to do violence…
when i was 11 there was a kid in my class who had been held back a couple years and spent time in juvie. during social studies he started threatening the teacher and she moved us to another classroom. i don't remember what he said to her, just that it was bad enough the police were called and i watched them take him away.
I am 38 now but when I was a kid I had couple teachers I didn't like but I never thought about hurting any of them!
Something I always see in these cases is: “his parents were a nice normal family” then go on to list severe trauma symptoms, personality disorders, depression, self harm etc which aren’t naturally occurring. Something isn’t right there. People would have written the same thing about my parents, outwardly lovely Christian members of the community but parented with narcissism, shame, emotional neglect.
It’s absolutely then down to the person being an evil sh!t that they do this. But the pathway to it is always interesting and something no one sees. We need to be more aware of emotional abuse and the signs. These kids (in the early stage of showing trauma signs and therefore antisocial behaviour) don’t need more punishment, they need trauma therapy and help finding the root.
You're right, he needed help with his mental health, I think him being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes made him change his whole personality, I'm a type one diabetic too and even though I grew up having a normal life, after being diagnosed and having to deal with that, you never get to rest, sleep a whole night, all the things that come with being a t1d doesn't matter how much work you put into it, you still have to deal with it 24/7, for the age that he was diagnosed and without the support I can see why he became such an evil person, even after years of being diagnosed I still get my moments of depression and need help to continue with life at just 24yrs, before my t1d I was never depressed or felt like sometimes I do now.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m fairly sure you can be born with a personality disorder. They often develop in ones teenage years as the brain develops further
@@loganarnoldkicks4321 in early psychology they thought it was just how people were born but now we know it’s almost always nurture. You can be genetically more at risk to develop something if your parent has due to elevated cortisol levels and thing like that, but again, that usually won’t come out if they were raised in a loving, emotionally mature home. It’s very interesting!
It’s touching to hear how much the other teacher tried to help Anne and to give her peace in her final moments. I’m glad she could have at least been surrounded by love and someone who cares. This is such a truly sad and horrific case.
I believe he really is a psychopath. He doesn’t have any empathy. He only regrets being in prison and wants out. He is going to say what he needs to get out and that’s it. It’s physically hard to stab someone to death. He could of stopped at anytime, but he didn’t. That’s what makes it so scary to hear. Every teen has a teacher they don’t like, but not enough to kill them. So sad. It could of been prevented if someone reported the knifes. I understand thinking he was just talking trash, but once you see a weapon it changed the narrative completely. As for her family, I think it’s a disgrace no one from the school reached out especially since she worked there for 40 years. So sorry for all the victims in this tragic story…
I think talking about murdering people is sadly not taken seriously enough because its normalised as being 'edgy'. Ive known a few people who talk like that and think they're being quirky and dark but would never actually go through with it. That poor woman didn't have to die that day.
i feel like making an off hand comment about wanting to hit someone with a car (still pretty morbid) is very different from speaking incredibly violently and consistently about one particular person.

i personally think this definitely could have been prevented in so many phases, but i think no one would have expected Will to have done this. if his parents had a feeling something was up, I think they should have been putting some more restrictions on him. ever since he found out he couldn't be in the army it was a downhill slope so maybe if they had been more insistent and even checked his messages it could have been prevented.

I wish parents would accept that something is wrong with their child and act upon it. No excuse, just do something to prevent that child from harming themselves or other people.
If Will had a gun, you can bet more people would have been killed including children. Students need to speak up when they see people struggling, threatening or voicing violence thoughts. Education on this topic should be mandatory in all classrooms. Rip Mrs. Maguire ❤
It 100% could have been prevented if one of the kids he told spoke up. At the same time, these are teenagers who probably did not take him seriously. At that time they should know better and should have spoken up. Will is the killer and it's 100% his fault. He should never be let out because he most likely do it again. He had no reason to kill her, thought it was worth bragging about after he did it and still has no remorse. That boy is a psychopath and is extremely dangerous.

It seems to be a regular occurrence that people don't take statements others say as serious? Even suicidal speak is generally pushed aside or brushed under the rug, until the person talking about it goes through with it. I just don't understand people 😕
Very strange that none of these students didn't tell their parents that Ann's life was in danger. It makes me mad that her family was left in the dark when they didn't tell them what happened to Ann. It definitely could have been prevented if someone said something to the school. I have never seen anything like this before. These teens are at school to learn not commit crimes and kill their teachers brutally. Ann's family should've been told the truth.
14-16 year olds are old enough to know that murder or suicide is something you report immediately. He told 10 pupils! Reminds me of the Kitty Genovese case :((((

i def think it could’ve been prevented had the other kids spoke up ab it.. even if it were a joke, having weapons on school grounds is illegal so that’s something they could’ve spoke up ab but it seems he had his mind made up on his hatred for her so it doesn’t really seem like there was much stopping him. i fully think he was solely responsible & it obviously shocked everyone around him. i especially feel bad for the teacher’s family

Hi im from leeds UK and Ann maguire was my school teacher in 2006. She was an amazing and so kind teacher. She taught me r.e (Religious education) and also my head teacher when I was in year 11. Watching this video brings me back good memories about her. Mrs maguire wasn't ment to be in school that day she was helping out for exams

Yes, this could have been prevented! He had told so many about wanting to murder her including offering money to another student. If one of those kids had come forward with that information, intervention might have been possible. If any young people are reading this: if you see or hear something say something. Go to your parents or a trusted adult who can see things more clearly from experience and intervene before something happens. Trust your gut feeling, you never know how it can save someone from a tragedy like this one that her family has to deal with forever!
I remember when I was younger my mum told me about this case because she went to that school and that was her teacher. She told me that she was her favourite teacher and still talks to me about her. She didn’t deserve what happened to her.

I don't think that we can excuse 14 -16 year old teenagers, they can all or should all know how to distinguish right from wrong. They need to be taught that this behavior needs to be reported.

I think his dad just desperately wants his son out of prison. Will said he WANTED to go to prison. He talked on and on about how much he hated his teacher and how much he wanted to kill her. He got exactly what he wanted, a prison sentence, now stay put.
Think back to when you were 14-16. Yes you're still a 'kid', buuutttt you're not so young that you can't make such decisions as telling someone your classmate is saying creepy stuff. Idk, I get the sentiment of saying they were kids and we can't really blame them (which is true they aren't to blame) but it sounds like he was texting multiple people? So how did not one of them not say anything?? I mean they're 15ish not 10. To me it is less that they didn't know better/were conflicted, and more that they made the wrong decision to not report. Again, not to blame for his actions, but I don't understand this narrative of these were only kids.
when i was 15 one of my friends made an offhand comment about suicide and i told our school crisis counselor. it's so weird to me that he was talking about this all the time and no one said anything especially with how much they drilled us about school shooters. i was a high schooler at the time this happened and they were constantly telling us to say something if someone was talking like this.

EXACTLY!!! I was 15 when I saw my friend have an argument with another student and while he laughed it off the other kid silently gave him a chilling death glare. I told my friend, something is off about that guy don't provoke him. If he were to meet you somewhere private, he would hurt you. Stoopid teenage guy ego, ofcourse my friend called me dramatic. Now he thanks me coz 6mts later that guy murdered someone and...gouged his eyes out and cut out his tongue. 😥😥😥

The poor teacher was only doing her job and going above and beyond, heartbreaking. I feel so bad for all the people that witnessed this and for Anns Family. Definetely couldve been prevented if the other kids spoke up about it.

I've been an educator for 7 years.... I have to admit that this is one of my biggest fears ..
This clearly could have been prevented... The students he told, IDC if it's a joke or not...if one of my friends say they want to kill someone, I'm telling a trusted adult...
Absolutely, it could have been prevented! The messages he sent to friends were way beyond joking. Every school murderer displays troubling signs of mental and emotional issues and tells many people what they are thinking of doing. How can anyone, teen or adult, listen to someone say the things he said and not be concerned, not tell someone? It saddens me that people won't step in when a friend, student, coworker, neighbor, etc. clearly is struggling. Imagine the deaths that can be prevented.

Hey Bella! Love your videos as always. As a teacher, our hope and expectations is that students will ALWAYS report if they hear anything - regardless of whether they think it’s a joke. Situations like this are the catalyst for the “Okay to Say” and “See Something, Say Something” messages that we so eagerly push in schools now. It’s so important that teachers and parents remind their students that it is always safer to report and have the situation looked into, even if they think it’s a “joke”.

Oh it totally could’ve been prevented if they kids had come forward AND if the adults had listened. Plus after he was diagnosed AND his dream of the military was ruined he should’ve been put into therapy. I don’t think he cares at all about what he did he was too far gone by then and there’s no going back.
yeah but also if a peer showed me a knife in secondary school and said “don’t tell or i’ll kill you” i would of definitely not say anything, i would of been terrified.

I'm from Birmingham and I remember having a lesson on this in year 8 I think? It was big news and I remember everyone talking about it. Such a sad case. He was bitter about his own life so simply took someone else's like it meant nothing. Only a coward does that.

he was “acting normal” weeks leading up but they’re also the same people who said he had acted different/more angry since he found out he couldn’t go to the military. i get they’re in denial but in the end, he did it and doesn’t have a single bit of remorse. there’s no reason he should be able to walk freely.
Early intervention is so important. As an educator I had a 5yr old student threaten to cut my throat with a knife like object (he'd manipulated an item from the classroom to expose sharp metal) and also attempt to harm a child with scissors. I reported everything each time and he was sent to therapy, not allowed back until cleared.

I can't believe I've never heard of this case before. It's so sad that no one reported this behavior ahead of time.
I'm pretty desensitized to true crime and murder but this one really hurt. She seemed like such a loving lady and hearing how her coworker comforted her and told her how much she's loved brought me to tears. Rest in peace Ann, you are very loved

I think this definitely could’ve been prevented. I don’t think the adults knew that he was going to murder someone, but they knew that something was wrong and they did nothing. This seems to happen a lot with adolescents these days.
What makes me most mad is how those kids stood by after he said he was going to kill her then show them knives, obviously he is serious. And for her family to feel the school did not reach out to them but spoke more to Wills family is disgusting, if any of them read this comment, your a terrible person for that and should feel guilty everyday.

my granny actually knew of ann mccguire and a lot of people did in leeds although i’m not sure if they knew eachother personally, they knew of her and i’m she was a well respected member of a community. i remember doing a race in memory of her with thousands of other primary school students in leeds when i was in year 5 (9-10 years old). i will never forget that race, everyone coming together to raise money in rememberance of her.
RIP ann, you will never be forgotten.
