Six months strong and I'm still pleased with the Spectra 2. I'm a teacher and this gets the job done twice a day while at work. I keep my Lansinoh pump in the car as backup just in case I leave a Spectra part at home after rushing in the morning. I love this pump, it's dependable as well.
The lactation team at my hospital provided Medela to me and lent it for one week before my Spectra S2 breast pump arrived. So I had experience with both. Both of them work great. Recommended for all. Very easy to use and has great suction. No complain.
Now that I’ve given birth and have used my pumps, I really hate the spectra. The suction is very aggressive, even on a low setting. I always have to mentally prepare myself for the pull. It made me realize how much better breastfeeding is. I ended up getting the Elvie instead of the Willow, and I prefer it now to even the spectra. I get more milk out with it than with the spectra, and it is not painful.
Thank you for sharing your perspective! The spectra has a vibration pattern in its suction style, I wonder if that’s bothersome for you because on the low levels it’s not overly strong. I’m so glad you’ve found success with the elvie! It has such a gentle suction.
All of my due date groups resoundingly say Spectra. This is my third pregnancy and it’s twins- I called my insurance specifically to ask for a unimom opera and I got one!! I am SO excited to use it!!
I love my unimom opera pump the best because it empties me out and relatively quiet. I had the medala in style with my daughter 5 years ago and I hated it because it was loud and only got very little output
I think one of the issues is that most insurance will cover Spectra, Medela, Lansinoh or Motif so they don’t know about options like Pumpables which has 2 great pumps that are covered with some insurance but limited DME providers. I would love to see the S9 with CaraCups compared to the Medela Freestyle Handsfree.
@@deboraarciniega5141 I have both and prefer the Medela over the Spectra, but I’m curious of the data or if it is just my mind or maybe my S9 needing to be replaced. I had the Freestyle Flex for baby 5 and got the Freestyle Handsfree for baby 6 (I still use the Flex too) the S9 just doesn’t feel like it has a strong suction to it.
Omgosh! I was given the 1996 Medela version after i gave birth in 2018!!! I really disliked that pump, especially since its so loud and took a long time to get any output. Since I had my 2 children back to back, and my insurance only pays for new pumps every 5 years, I had to stick with it yet only pumped for 4 weeks each time.
I used the freemie closed system plastic cups with the spectra s1 plus. I'm a dispatcher and I exclusively pumped with my first child. I plan on pumping at work for my second and nursing at home. The freemie cups saved me because I can stay at my console without having to stop working. I work in a smaller agency so a flange that sits in the bra is a must.
If you need strong suction get Baby Buddha. I was an over-producer with lots of clogged milk duct problems. Spectra S1 was not cutting it… I needed a pump that will empty out my breast completely & it was Baby Buddha. Having a new baby & dealing with clogged duct was a nightmare.
Both of these companies make several different pumps, which pumps are you looking to compare? I thought the title was clear but perhaps I’ll have another look and adjust! Thanks!
I am 30 week s pregnant with my 4th child, but the last time I had a baby was over 10 years ago when the market was just so much simpler. I tis honestly how many breast pumps are avalible, I just don'tknow where to start looking or which one to choose.
I have the Medela Pump in style that she mentions at 9:00 from my insurance company and it shuts down within the first week, maybe 2 weeks of me having it. The motor shuts off within a couple of SECONDS of turning it on. Medela even mentions the motor not working in the “problems” section of the instruction manual. I don’t recommend it
Yes, similar experience!I just had my baby and now I am engorged and this modela pump hasn’t wanted to start! I have only gotten it to work once or twice!
This was super helpful, I liked hearing the background on these two companies! I got a Medela pump in style max flow from my insurance and it’s been fine for me, but I only pump one or two days a week 😅
working in a wic clinic, many of our moms only have access to either the cheapest they can find or what their insurance will cover. For me, when it comes to Spectra vs Medela, it's usually the Spectra S1/S2 vs the Medela pump in style with max flow (why such a long name? 🙄 ). Sometiems they can get Zomee Z2, Motif Luna, but usually they are sent a spectra or medela pump in style with max flow. Many of our moms use the symphony in the hospital or if they're having supply issues. some have the classic medela from the mid 90's. Do you have the suction pattern and specs for these pumps? I'm trying to better serve our moms by learning as much as I can about the pumps they have access to. Love your channel! Wish we could have you speak to our group of Peer Counselors and IBCLC's sometime.
Thanks for your feedback and questions! I do have info sheets on these pumps inside our Pumping for Lactation Professionals course and library. www.pumpingforlactationprofessionals.com I am pretty full on speaking engagements for this year, but you’re always welcome to send over any requests if that’s something helpful for you and your team! I’ve been using the medela pump in style maxflow and usually get 1oz each pumping. I wonder if the Spectra could help extracting more. Thank you for any help
I oppose those few that said this was too wordy. I loved that you shared history. I used Spectra with second child and I’m now going to use a Medela with this baby (arriving very very soon!). Not gonna lie, I even thought “what if I manufacture a breast pump?” Ha! Thank you for the information! Your channel is gold!!
@@NewLittleLife I actually stopped what I was doing to focus on the history part. Lol! Btw, I meant to say “I’m now” going to use a Medela and not “I’m not”; went back and edited my comment. Spectra was great with my second child to some extent, specially since I exclusively pumped. This time, I am going to try to pump and breastfeed since my husband wants to feed baby as well. I thought Medela will work better for me with this plan.
You all are just ridiculous🙄😂 I’m glad to understand these pumps properly..brand longevity is an important factor. In fact ALL of this info is valuable to ANYONE that would prefer to know exactly what we’re/I’m throwing 300-500$ at. Not to mention the fact this info directly correlates to my ability to feed my baby as effectively as possible. This is certainly one area in which I wouldn’t be so incredibly lazy, for goodness sake. Too lazy even, for 10 mins of simply listening and learning.
I got a hand me down spectra s1 so I purchased the medela freestyle hands free through insurance as a more compact option. I did not plan for sharing parts. If I did, I would have bought a different one. Now I have the genie advanced and use the liquid shield kit with the spectra and like it better than using it with the genie advanced even. I like the vibration and the soft kneading feeling similar to baby’s nursing. I feel like medela has some basic issues to resolve with the handsfree-1. Nipple visibility ( I can’t tell if it’s centered) 2. Touch screen lock. 3. More customization with speed and vacuum. I live the simplicity of the cups though for cleaning
I am renting the Symphony and love it but purchased the Spectra Synergy Gold and hate the vibration/suction feeling. What is the best portable pump for a similar gentle feeling of the Symphony?
I tried the Spectra and it was NOT working for me. I had to dig out my 5 year old Medela Pump in Style Advanced and finally my mastitis went away and I’m able to unclog my ducts.
Im looking for an answer too i currently have my spectra gold but not pumping yet since im still pregnant but i also want to try to get the sonata but i want to see if its worth to buy
I just bought the sonata, and I previously had the gold. Both are good, but vastly different. I also haven't seen a good, in depth review of the Sonata anywhere.
My first baby (almost 7 years ago) i got the old medela pump in style. Just had a baby 3 months ago, i let my friend use my pump and she gave it away. So anyway.. i needed a new pump. I was going to get the new pump in style because i thought it was like the one i had before.. then i saw the reviews. I didnt even know spectra, ameda, unimom ect. So it was really tempting to just stick to what i knew even though the reviews were kinda awful. I am so glad i didnt.
