    This was a lifesaver for me, thank you. Baby came a month early so I hadn’t even taken the pump out of the box yet. We are 5 days postpartum, just home from the hospital and feeling a little overwhelmed trying to figure out a different pump than I used in the hospital. Thank you!!

    Thank you!!! Went with the Spectra S1 since I can still dual pump. My insurance said it was only a $75 upgrade!! They didn’t have it listed that they even helped with it. I was going to get the Gold till they said the upgrade was $329!! Yikes. I’d just buy it for that. So so glad I went with the S1!!! Thank you so much for this video I started watching yesterday and your videos really helped me with my decision!!! Much appreciated.

    Thank you, this is such a helpful video! I just watched it as I tried my spectra for the first time. How do you keep the phalanges on the breast during the pump? I just held them on but when I would let go they would fall off… Thanks in advance for your help!

    • @NewLittleLife
      @NewLittleLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You do have to hold them. You can also get a pumping bra if you want which many pumping moms do. There are a couple hacks out there too.
      This is why pumps like the Elvie and willow are so popular because they are hands free! If you want to try something hand free with your spectra, look into the freemie cups. There’s another video on the channel!

    At 5:29 you can see the white sealing disc go the whole way back to touch the other side of the backflow protector. Mine does not do that. It barely gets sucked back at all, no matter what type of setting it’s on. Am I doing something wrong?

    How does suction change double vs single pumping? I have been using single side at vacuum 3 but I don't feel any suction when double pumping. Is double pumping at 6 equivalent to single pumping at 3?

  • @ruchitamehra7394
    @ruchitamehra7394 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi, this video was very helpful. The first time I tried the pump, it worked fine but yesterday when I tried, there was no suction. I just couldn’t understand what was happening. All the parts went in correct places. Only after seeing your video step by step, it worked. Can it happen sometimes that the suction doesn’t work

    • @NewLittleLife
      @NewLittleLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If that happens, something isn’t right. The pump just doesn’t stop working, so checking the connections and parts are all assembled will likely fix it. The most common issues are the backflow connector installed incorrectly or the duckbill flanges missing. Hope that helps!

  • @jessicamcgraw922

      That’s an AWESOME idea for a video! I’m gonna work on that for you.
      Setting, just start low and see where your breasts like it best. The lowest setting where you get good milk output is usually best, it takes just a little bit to figure yourself out then you can keep it on those settings!
      No need to pump for at least 6 weeks if things are going well for you :) good luck!

    I'm still a bit confused on when to switch modes and which is which. How can you tell which one is working best?

    • @NewLittleLife
      @NewLittleLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If your pump has the two phase expression option, start with the faster one (let down mode). Once you see or feel a let down (30secs-few minutes) then switch over to the slower mode (expression mode). Does that help?

    • @alyssashipley1104
      @alyssashipley1104 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NewLittleLife yeah. Im not too familiar with recognizing let down feeling. How do know which speed to do 38-54? I pump for 30 minutes each side and I leave it on the 54 setting and 3 the whole time. I only pump 2-3 times at night. Because I supplement my twins with formula at night. But I'm in excruciating pain if I sleep too long and I don't want to lose supply either but spending an hour to pump is exhausting. I have to do one at a time because I don't have a bra and it's too hard to hold both. Anything to make pumping easier, faster and getting the most milk would be greatly appreciated.

    • @NewLittleLife
      @NewLittleLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Which pump do you have? Can you feel a let down when your babies are at the breast? As far as a bra, just cut two small holes in a old bra to put the flanges in, you don’t need a fancy one! You can also hack it with just a regular nursing bra, maybe try searching some hacks on that. Pumping one at a time is not the most effective and time consuming for sure!

    • @NewLittleLife
      @NewLittleLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not on the Spectra since it is a closed system. There should be no milk in the tubing.

    • @KassiReyes
      @KassiReyes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You actually shouldn’t regularly wash the tubes in any breast pump, because they are really hard to dry and can mold. If you notice mold in the tubes, they should be replaced

    • @msantiago5198
      @msantiago5198 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does the tubing ever build up condensation? I remember back years ago when I used the medela the tubes would sometimes have perspiration and then the manufacturer recommended washing them

    • @NewLittleLife
      @NewLittleLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Medela pumps are usually an open system, meaning there’s no barrier between the milk and the tubing. This is a closed system pump, so that shouldn’t happen :) if it does, something isn’t right.

  • @mallorikerr4092
    @mallorikerr4092 ปีที่แล้ว

    The only issue with finding the right flange size is if you have stretchy nipples and areolas like I do. It sucks but I can't seem to find a flange that prevents too much areola from getting pulled in. The Lactech brand helps as far as allowing more milk to flow in spite swelling from the session but I haven't found that silicone prevents the stretchy nipple problem.
    The medela pump in style advance being discontinued the spectra s2 is the alternative I chose with my 3rd and final son. I'm hoping to be able to pump longer than I did with my second son this time.

    1. I have multiple children over several years, do you recommend getting a new pump each time? I was hoping to use it. How do you tell when it’s done?
    2. How long should you pump for? Or is there a signal when you’re done?

    • @NewLittleLife
      @NewLittleLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually pumps are recommended for about a years use. If it still functions well and you place the tubing and valves, it will likely work! Most insurance companies and providing a new one doe each pregnancy as it is recommended.
      Pumping time is definitely different per person. A very average time is 15-20 minutes. I often pump less because I’m exclusively breastfeeding and don’t need to “empty” the breast. When you are no longer seeing milk come for a couple minutes that’s a good sign you are finished for now. In theory, you could place the pump back on 10 minutes later and try to trigger another let down!

      It’s not a bad idea to bring it, I usually recommend leaving it in the car. Easy to grab if you need it, but utilizing the hospital lactation consultants to help with initiating breastfeeding is probably more wise. Thats what they’re trained in anyway! They really aren’t trained in pumping.

      Not much is comparable between those two pumps. You may be able to find an adapter from a wide mouth to a small mouth bottle to attach the old ones to your pump, otherwise almost everything is different. You can definitely use the Medela bottles for feedings though if you’d like.

      If it works it works! Some people do respond better to faster stimulation, and the let down mode on the spectra isn’t that fast anyway. Go for it!

    • @KassiReyes

      Brett & Tenay Benes I would say one great hack is to have more than one set of pump parts. That way you don’t have to wash between every pumping session. And then just have them next to your bed and ready to go if you are pumping at night :)

    Thanks for this video! On your point about buying/selling used Spectras, I’m worried about the type definition on the link you shared and cross contamination/disease concerns. Everything I’m reading says the S1 is hospital grade so therefore all parts interchangeable. Can you confirm this is your reading also, that this is not a concern with this pump? Thanks again.

    • @NewLittleLife
      @NewLittleLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Spectra is a closed system pump, so cross contamination is less likely than with an open system pump yes. In my opinion, there are still several other reasons not to buy a used pump though :)

      Hmm.. that shouldn’t be happening. I would try a different/new bottles or try a new/different shield. Something just isn’t lining up quite right sounds like! It should stay tight no problem.

      Ericka Prater try to turn down suction, make sure you are comfortable and relaxed, imagine your baby, smell your baby’s blanket, looks at pictures of baby. The hormone oxytocin responsible for milk let down is released when you are relaxed and bonding with baby.

    • @NewLittleLife
      @NewLittleLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope! Especially not on a closed system pump like this. It doesn’t come in contact with the milk so there’s no need, and any extra water droplets on the tubing will damage the motor.

    • @NewLittleLife
      @NewLittleLife  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s a lot of experimentation! The stimulation mode is set so just find the maximum comfortable suction. In stimulation mode, start the cycles in the middle and just up or down to see what works best. No pressure there, they’ll all likely work fine! Use the highest suction that is COMFORTABLE, not the highest you can tolerate. See what gives you the best milk flow in the shortest time! Good luck 💙
