    One tip I have for pumping away from your baby(like at work) is to look at pictures of your baby, or videos of them. It helps you to have that bonding feeling and thereby helping your milk let down and express better. I remember that helped me with my first baby a lot.

    Mommas! In the hospital my nurse and I used the Medela pump. It had ALOT of parts. I walked away with a kitchen size trash bag of parts they gave me. Target did not have the Medela, so my husband got the EVENFLO just for me to look at since I had my mind made up to get the Medela. When he got home, I had to use it because I was so engorged and needed a release. Needless to say, I’ve never looked back. It is the EASIEST pump, the parts are so simple and to clean after each session only takes < 1 minute. I easily take it room to room and even have used it in the car. I would highly recommend, especially for new mothers. We need simplicity!

    I’m 23 and just moved back to America from living in Asia. Just had my babygirl at home. Didn’t know I would be returning to the States, but we were forced to due to Covid-19. I was preparing to have my child in Asia. I watched so many of your videos as I prepared overseas- wishing I could have a homebirth. We lived in rural Cambodia and were 9 hours from the nearest hospital, so a homebirth was out of the question. Bridget, my lactation consultant says that the Hakas SEEM to work really well, but in fact only pull out the fore-milk (watery part of milk containing lactose which can be more irritating to baby’s belly), and doesn’t do as well at pulling out the hind-milk (the fattier milk that contains lactase, the enzyme that breaks down the lactose.)

My lactation consultant didn’t want to help me since I wasn’t latching my baby. I ended up making 80-90opd and I still have breast milk frozen. Pumping is often overlooked

      Andrea 691 yes!! Just make sure they’re at the same temperate before combining so refrigerate them both for a couple hours and then it’s safe to combine! And safe to freeze together once refrigerated

    Hi bridget! So i heard a tip from someone... to avoid continuously washing your pump parts after every session, one can put the parts in a ziplock bag and put them in the fridge. Then just wash the parts at the end of that day. Have you heard of this? Idk if it's real or not.

    • @domeniquembarela3231

    • @PrenatalYini
      @PrenatalYini 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many moms do this. It is NOT the best practices but you can do it safely by putting all the parts that come in contact with your milk in a large ziplock bag after pumping in the refrigerator (towards the back of the fridge) and then washing parts and sterilizing once a day. My breastfeeding-specific channel might help support your breastfeeding experience. All the best to you.

    Watching this video was incredibly helpful, and overwhelming at the same time. I’m pregnant with my third and last one. I want to pump and breast feed. I was unable to successfully breastfeed with my other two and wasn’t fully aware of pumping. No one said I could do that. I do work full time, currently from home but I want to be as successful in this journey as possible. I will have to have a little note on the refrigerator to remind me of the time to use the milk 😕

    Hi Bridget! I'm a first time mom due in a couple weeks and I've really been loving your videos; so glad I found your channel!
    I'm going to be lucky enough to be a stay-at-home mom and definitely plan on breastfeeding, but I want to give my husband the option of feeding baby as well. Will the haakaa be enough to maybe give him one feeding a day? Is it only useful for catching unused milk, or will I be able to express milk while baby isn't on the other breast? Can I start using the haakaa right away, or should I wait a few weeks?
    Thanks; love your helpful spirit!

    • @BridgetTeyler
      @BridgetTeyler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      It depends! For some women the Haakaa does give them enough milk for a feeding if they're using it on both sides. If you're going to use it while you nurse though, you're probably only going to use it on one side, so it might take a couple feedings to build up enough for a whole feeding.
      Also remember that at the beginning especially you want to make sure you're removing milk from your breasts at least every 3 hours ish. So if your hubby takes over one of those feedings, you probably should still pump or hand express so your body is still being told to produce plenty of milk and to avoid engorgement!

    What's letdown and why would you press the letdown button during the end of the pumping session ? Sorry first time mom. Due February 5th. Love your videos, you're helping me tremendously! Much love from Minnesota !!☃️⛅️🌲❤️

    • @BridgetTeyler
      @BridgetTeyler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      So you’re letdown is when your milk like “drops” into your breast after baby has been sucking for 30 seconds- 2 minutes. Sometimes you feel it sometimes you don’t. With the pump, it starts off sucking quickly to help get the letdown from your breast, then once you have the letdown, you’ll want to switch your pump to the express mode with is a slower sucking rate. Let me know if that makes sense!

    So excited to try the haakaa this time around. I'm hoping it makes some kind of difference. I always end up supplementing since my milk takes forever to come in, I have horrible success with all the pumps I've tried, and hate being stuck in a chair attached to something all the time. My brain is really dark and slow for at least the first few months, and it's a terrible time for problem solving all this. I do try to make up for it with a good goat milk formula and at least 18 months of breastfeeding. I'll probably also break out the old Medela and see if any of these tips help.

    Great video and I completely agree with your recommendation about using the Haakaa early on and how and when to use the electric pump. I just wanted to add that the hospital grade pumps aren't necessarily stronger than the single user pumps. But they're designed to be used by many different people (cleaning in between) and have dual motors and programs with pre-settings to help stimulate production. Those are available for rent if mom and baby are separated or baby is unable to latch for medical reasons.

    If I combine haakaa milk throughout the day and husband feeds this bottle at night, do I still need to do traditional pumping to make up for that feeding? I wanna have a longer sleep stretch but having to pump will defeat this purpose 🤷‍♀️

    My baby is five weeks old and I’ve been using the haakaa every feeding to relieve engorgement. This isn’t a problem for the most part, but it makes me anxious for when I have to try and nurse and use the haakaa simultaneously in public! If I don’t use it, my other boob isn’t drained enough and I’m in pain, but I probably shouldn’t use it forever right? 😅 Any suggestions to not need the haakaa, but still be able to build a little stash when needed?

    HI Bridget!
    First time mum here :-)
    Such an informative video, watched this because I didn't know where to start with milk supply and pumping (going back to work in a month or so) and this is super helpful! Question: I already have a Hakaa, but no electric pump yet. What about combining the Hakaa and a Medela Swing Flex (only on one side)? Would this work too or will this not express enough during a 9-5 work day?
    Thanks and keep up the great videos!!

    I’m a ftm and exclusively breastfeeding but trying to get some pump sessions in for when I go back to work or grandparents watch baby etc. and I’m having a hard time figuring out my flange size. I have the spectra s1 and when I measured via their tape thing online, it said 24 mm but I feel like my nipples swell when I pump. How do I make sure I have the right size when my nipples swell?

    Thanks for the how-to on the Medela Pump in Style! First time mom here and 37 weeks along so this is very helpful! When you are pumping and massaging/squeezing your breast, do you need to hold the flange in place to keep it from disconnecting from the nipple, or does it stay attached from the suction?

    • @BridgetTeyler
      @BridgetTeyler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      When you're massaging and compressing it should be around the flange so that the suction doesn't break. Sometimes during the compressions the suction does break briefly, but it shouldn't happen often. If it does keep happening, you're probably squeezing too close to the nipple and just need to back your hands up a little bit!

    I wish someone had told me to start before 6 weeks. I had so much milk early on and was pumping for awhile, having 3-4 ounces on one side while baby fed on the other at times. Then people told me I was pumping too soon and could get problems with over-supply. Now my baby is 8 months and I'm working so hard to try to have 'enough' milk plus a little extra.

    When do you recommend starting to use the Hakkaa? This is the pump I'm primarily interested in using, so I'm curious when I should start.

    • @KassiReyes
      @KassiReyes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I usually recommend waiting 2-3 weeks to start any pumping unless there is a medical indication and you need to provide your baby with extra milk. It takes 2-3 weeks for your body to establish your supply based on baby’s feeds if you are doing on demand nursing. The Haakaa is a great tool! I have a video on my channel for more information on Haakaa use that you may find helpful. Have a beautiful day!
