I was a True Blue Mormon convert for over 40 years, until I was presented with the very information, plus much more, mentioned in this video. I do not refer to myself as Ex-Mormon, because I see that as a negative identification. I am a human being living this life and learning whatever I can to be happy and fulfilled. After I resigned my membership, I felt as if I had a huge load lifted from my back. There IS life after Mormonism. AND, as someone who would have been considered an apostate under Brigham Young, at least today I don't have to worry about having my throat slit!

As a former Mormon (I resigned in 2005!), I appreciate his presentation of the history. Most Mormons don't read history! The one missing detail which he did not present was the Masonic influence and practices incorporated within the Church's development in the 1830's and on. If Masonry had not been adopted by these founding men, the Church would have remained more fundamental in Christian dogma and practice. The LDS Church, because of Masonry, become a bastardized Christian sect. Polygamy, as well as Patriarchy, was the disease which caused so much fracturing within its history. Thanks to Joseph Smith, many millions of minds are polluted today!

It's ridiculous. My brother in law was raised Mormon and I was talking about how Joe Smith had married an ancestor of ours when she was only 15. My BIL said "But Joseph Smith didn't marry multiple women. He was just married to Emma". It's infuriating.

As one who was born and raised in Mormonism or the Mormon church, I can vouch that it is not only the religion that is harmful and toxic in so many ways. But the followers as well can be and tend to be just as toxic and harmful.
They can be extremely abusive, vindictive, judgmental, bias, spiteful, prejudiced, and pretty much hateful.
I directly experienced it from the whole Mormon church community I had grown up knowing. Even those I did not ever meet or know, had made attempts to attack or come after me, by even using threats upon family to get at me.
Sorry, but not sorry. I know how bad they can be, even those in church leadership.
My fathers side of family were involved in the churches historicity with Joseph Smith and others since the beginning. They pride themselves with all the letters and correspondences they have from him and others.
I just do eye rolls at the Mormon church talk .

As someone who has dealt with the FLDS and because of this studied the LDS history, I was absolutely shocked at how little LDS members know about the history of the church. If they know about the history of the church it is often a sterilized version presented by the church. An example is that plural marriage happened because of the trip out west and the many men who were killed necessitated the surviving men to take multiple wives. This is a very common belief by LDS members and if presented with the truth I am told that it is propaganda from the days of Mormon persecution.
I've said before and I'll say it here. The LDS church should be studied by anyone interested in theology. It presents an opportunity to see the evolution that all religions go through. It is documented in a "information age" and we can observe it's progression from a cult to accepted religion. The leaders and the crafting of their power, cult of personality, to watering down of their beliefs and "embarrassing" past to something palatable. How isolation allowed the church to grow and become more mainstream as they gained more political power.
It is amazing to see it all happen essentially in our time. The analogies with Christianity and Islam are there but not just in an abstract historical form but in a real tangible and unfiltered presentation.

    • @cdowis

Quite an interesting listen. I am always interested to learn more about the Mormons.
Having attended Lakeland Community College in Mentor, Ohio, I was exposed to the Mormon sect that remained in Lake County. The Kirtland Temple is just down the road from the campus, but I don't think it was used as a center of worship by the group who tried to convert me and my "counter culture" friends. This was around 1972. It was my impression that this group held their services in the homes of group members and that the Temple is owned by a different sect.
There were two brothers who signed up for a class or two each term so they had legitimate right to be on campus. They really tried hard to gain converts. We went to their homes, saw slide shows of Mayan and Aztec art that the Saints (they did not like to be called Mormons) believed proved that Jesus Christ visited the New World after his resurrection but before the ascension, to preach to the descendants of two of the Lost Tribes of Israel. Oh yeah, did you know that some of the Native Americans came to the New World after the fall of the Tower of Babel? And then more came from Palestine around the time the Assyrians destroyed the Kingdom of Israel?
These two brothers spent at least six months trying to convert our group of friends. I suspect they thought that hippies would be the most open minded and likely to be potential converts. Sadly they failed to win a single convert. They were always welcome to join us on campus when we would hang out, but since they did not smoke or drink or use drugs (or so they claimed) they did not socialize with us other than on campus or during their conversion efforts at their homes. I did get a free copy of the Book of Mormon, the edition used by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Reorganized. My friends emphasized that they were not part of the Reorganized Church, that there was a difference if the word Reorganized came first or last. They of course claimed that THEIR version of the faith was the original and true version. Whatever.
In any event, the story behind the religion was zany and I could not understand how any rational person could believe it. It was so obviously made up. But the book was an interesting and fun read. The Saints who I met were all very friendly, very scrubbed, industrious, and seemed to be genuinely good people. I am glad I met them and learned something about them way back when. I will have to check out Bryce's site.
    Thank you, Seth.

Most Mormons are decent people. I've traveled across the states numerous times, and out of the states 3 times to two different countries. Compared to the other states, Utah has an incredibly friendly and community centric culture that I am quite happy to attribute to the Mormons, and their sense of civic responsibility.
That being said, I wish the fuckin' church would stop screwing around with the legalization of medical marijuana here, and that they'd stop messing with the alcohol here. I'm not Mormon, though I am descended from some original high up pioneer families, and I hate the fact that there is *no* separation of church and state here.

I graduated from Kirtland High in ‘72 and as I understood it, a different division(?) of the Mormons wanted to get a hold of that temple from the other division. The new group built a new house of worship down the hill in the valley from the Kirtland Temple. They new group also started buying the old little houses from the old temple. There were stories of little old widows having two gentlemen in their white shirt, narrow blue tie uniforms knock on her door to make her a high offer on her house. Shortly afterwards another pair of Mormons would appear at her door with another offer.
The Kirtland temple was beautiful though back then

I understand ... to a point. I could consider myself a secular pagan. I was born into Roman Catholicicm, and I've experienced a variety of religions in my life. Paganism was my last ditch effort to believe before I accepted the fact that I was an atheist. My husband and I met during the festival of Beltaine. I enjoyed the people, the (vast) variety of traditions and their historical relevance. And mostly, it was plain fun. Drinking, dancing, revelry. I never believed in any pantheon, but I could relate to nature = God(dess) = nature. Eventually I succumbed to what I was. An atheist. But I miss the drum circles, dancing naked around a fire into the early hours of the morning. Just being a part of it all.

I completly agree that education is the most powerful weapon to change the world.
Unfortunatly this is a fact that religion has known for way longer than we which is why they always try to either hinder any education efforts or, if they can no longer stop education, to take it over. Religion has always known the way to increase believers is to get them while they are young or desperate and ideally both.
What we need to increase is not only education, but especialy education in critical thinking.

Bryce started talking about the nose to the grind stone mentality the Mormons had...reminds me of a joke:
So a man dies and goes to heaven. St. Peter meets him on the gates to give him a tour. Heaven is jut as glorious as the man thought it would be, so he starts walking around ahead of St. Peter. He gets to a cliff and looks down and sees an equally lush, beautiful paradise at the base of the cliff. St. Peter sees him looking down the cliff, and he yells out "Hey! No you don't wanna look down there! That's hell, that's where people burn for eternity. Looking down there will ruin your time here".
The man responds "But it's not burning. There's orchards, and gardens, and irrigation and houses and it looks really really really nice" St. Peter comes over and looks down at the base of the cliff. He heaves a sigh and says "Goddammit, the Mormons have been irrigating again."

The dead giveaway should be the BoM's Shakespearean (King James Bible) English used in supposedly having translated the Golden Plates in the 1800s. The King James Bible is equally full of shit, but that it was translated into contemporaneous Shakespearean English because it was the COMMON English of its day-the SIXTEEN, not eighteen, hundreds. Joseph's Myth was "translated" into King James English in the eighteen hundreds to serve his narrative that the BoM is "another Testament". People of many Christian backgrounds say "grace" and other prayers in King James English. They think it makes them sound pious, but all I think is, "Wait, is this Act 2/Scene2 'The Tempest'?"

i was raised in the mormon church, sealed to my parents and brother in the utah temple when i was 4yrs old. i never believed from an early age. it never made sense to me . by the time i was about 15 i was an atheist but still went to church because of my mom. im now 51 yrs old and im the only atheist in my family and outside of my immediate family. my mom gets mad when i ask for proof. lol . she was also indoctrinated, born into the church. Mormons, in my experience, seem to be the most hypocritical of all the christian sects out there. and btw, my father was also a mason and as an older child i was a demolay, which i enjoyed very much. i am also of decent of people who were with jo and brig. so yeah, mormonism is strong in my family since the beginning of the religion

Most active Mormons avoid anything that would tarnish their perfect image of Mormonism and its not so perfect history. If you are Mormon you really have to ask yourself the question, " Does the good in the religion outweigh the bad? ". For a lot of Mormons selective ignorance is bliss, and it is more than just a religion, it is a social circle comprised of friends and family with a standard set of values that on the surface look pretty good, but on individual level you find that your best will never good enough and that it is impossible to be perfect, witch can leave you feeling a little flawed. One of the things that I noticed about the church that really bothered me was its lack of accountability. The church has never admitted to any wrong doing at any level at anytime in its history, instead it shifts the blame to members by saying " The church is perfect, but our members are not ". For most people raised in the church any doubts or lack of faith that everything that they tell you is the truth, feels like a failure on your part, and most feel ashamed that they would even question it.

Decent history lesson, but a lot was left off the table. For instance, not only was Joseph Smith a Freemason, but Brigham Young was 32nd degree Freemason, as well.
In fact, the first five Latter-day “prophets” were Freemasons (Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, and Lorenzo Snow).
Here’s where it gets interesting... Albert Pike was a 33rd degree Freemason, himself.
Here’s what he has to say:
“That which we must say to the crowd is: we worship a god, but it is the god that one adores without superstition. To you Sovereign Grand Inspectors General, we say this, that you may repeat it to the brethren of 32nd, 31st and 30th degrees - the Masonic Religion should be, by all of us initiates of the high degrees, maintained in the purity of the Luciferian doctrine. If Lucifer were not god, would Adonay (Jesus)... culminate (spread false and harmful statements about) him? Yes, Lucifer is God.”
*A.C. De La Rive, La Femme et I’Enfant dans la
    Franc-Maçonnèrie Universelle (page 588).
Manly P. Hall was a 33rd degree Freemason, as well.
    He writes:
“When the Mason learns that the key... is the proper application of the dynamo of living power, he has learned the Mystery of his Craft. The seething energies of Lucifer are in his hands.”
-The Lost Keys of Freemasonry, (p. 78).
Having brought that to light- Mormonism is a secret cult with a Christian facade. Mormon temples are littered with Masonic occult symbols and pentagrams. Not only do they believe that Lucifer is Jesus’ brother, they also believe that they can become gods- which of course, contradicts scripture...
    Isaiah 43:10
before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
They also use Joseph Smith’s “revelations” and the Book of Mormon in an attempt to squeak by with their heretical theology, but that also contradicts scripture they claim to ascribe to...
    Galatians 1:8-9
8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
9 As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
    Ciao

I'm honestly trying to get through this...but it's hard and hurting my brain. As an agnostic atheist living in Utah, but who grew up in Mormonism (confirmed, baptized, and sealed to my wife in the temple), I find his labeling dodgy and off putting. Personally, I don't try to play word games. I am an ex-Mormon because I don't believe in the tenants anymore. It is the person's responsibility who hears this to do with it as they like. I don't need to feel accepted by the society that surrounds the LDS church and I'm not going to throw softballs to make them accept me...that includes my religious family members. Besides, here in Salt Lake City, there is plenty of people who don't believe and they are just as good people. We also have micro-brews, distilleries, and strip clubs, so there are lots of people with different interests. So I'm sorry that I am tapping out early and things may get addressed better latter (or should I say ladder?) on. But I hate playing semantics to be accepted or start conversations.

Sunstone mormon, jack-mormon, TBM, fundamentalist mormon, independent mormon, excommunicated mormon, post-mo, never-mo, NOM, Reorganized Mormon, Temple Lot Mormon ... as LHP and Sunstone put it, "there are many ways to mormon." Like, I've been through a ton of the continental United States, and have visited India and Ireland. Utah is the second friendliest place I've ever seen (rural Ireland was the first. You can't beat the Irish when it comes to friendly, helpful and easy going-ness), and I think that's a direct result of the Mormon focus on family, community and civic responsibility.

Many of the denominations are disciples of Paul who is the catalyst of those Christians sects today. Paul taught that the mouth could save us (Rom 10:10), which was contrary to what Christ taught.
James tried to correct him -- faith without works is dead, and dead faith faith cannot save anyone , the demons confess Christ and tremble.
They continue to teach Paul's other gospel in their churches today rather than what Christ taught -- e.g. baptism (a work) is necessary for salvation (Mark 16:16).
Peter warned us about following the teachings of Paul (2 Peter 3:15-16) but they heed not his warning.

I enjoyed the interview and Bryce's Naked Mormonism podcasts are entertaining, but for Bryce to call himself a "Secular Mormon" who identifies with the Mormon culture and Mormon language is like calling a woodpecker a carpenter. Bryce tears down and mocks Mormonism (deservedly) at every turn and is an avowed Atheist. For the first couple of years at least of his podcasts he threw out the F word and MF word and other profanities, vulgarities and gross comments like "warm shit on a cold winter morning" repeatedly and even vowed in response to criticism that he would continue to do so. Bryce has now apparently decided to clean up his act in an attempt to gain more respect from his listeners and especially from critical ex Mormon scholars and I applaud him for that but I don't buy his attempt to repackage himself as a "Secular Mormon". Mormons who have listened to Bryce's podcasts would have to be aghast at his claim to be a Secular Mormon. To use Bryce's language, his claiming to be a Secular Mormon is complete Bullshit.
