If you really think about it... there's not many songs out there quite like it... it was impressive and unique then, and it's the same today all these years later. I will say the same about "Edge of Seventeen" two years prior in 1981. Stevie just had/has that power and that magic. She was definitely rock, but yet she defied the typical song arrangements and formats. I feel that way about a lot of her songs... both solo and with Fleetwood Mac. She took you away on this meandering journey with all those lyrics and those vocal arrangements. Even if you weren't sure what the hell she was talking about, it still kept you intrigued and captivated... and soon it became personal and emotional for you too, as the listener. And, I don't believe Stevie makes any conscious effort to do that with her writing, that's just her own personal style. It's not something you learn in a class. It's just who and what she is as an artist. And how lucky we all are as fans to be taken along for the ride.
Just saw her in concert (Greenville, SC) she's amazing! 70 yrs old, still hot and didn't take a break for almost 2 hours! Voice is still unbelievably amazing!!
She hasn't been hot for a long, long time. Stop. She's a legend of the business and has one of the most distinctive voices, but let's not get delusional about her looks.
I never thought about this before, but you are exactly right. There was always something about Stevie's voice that was just timelessly unique to my ears. Yeah.. it's that distinctive raspy voice. Same with Tina Turner. RIP to these two greats of music history.
I heard an interview Stevie did explaining how Prince agreed to work on and record this track with her. Apparently she called him and he came into the studio, laid his keyboard tracks down in one take and in 20minutes left the building. She went on to say when they play this song live she uses two keyboardists. She said he was the greatest musician she had ever met.

I love the story of how this song was written. Stevie was on her way to her honeymoon and heard Prince's "Little Red Corvette" on the radio and was immediately inspired to write this song. She detoured from her honeymoon to get into the recording studio and got Prince's number. They had never met. She called him and told him that she was working on a song inspired by his "Little Red Corvette" and that she was giving him 50% of the royalties for the song if it ever became successful. She asked him what he was doing right that moment and if he could come into the studio to play on the recording. He said yes and was there in 20 mins. He worked on it and played on it in the studio with Stevie and her crew for about an hour and a half, and this is the result. Pretty great stuff.

It was sometime in 1983 I was at home relaxing after a long hot day of work with an adult beverage and turned on the TV and it was Friday night videos and there was this video! That was the night I fell in love with Stevie Nicks! Her look, her voice, her presence! Every time I watch this video it takes me back to that night! Thanks Stevie! 😘
April 1986, CAR RADIO. I gave my neighbor a ride to her father's house. I gleefully watched my neighbor singing out loud, jamming with a baby in her lap!!😄😄😄😄😄😄😄❤❤❤❤
Stevie and Prince collaborating on this bad funky jam is awesome. Two gemini superstar geniuses got together, wow. Stevie's cool whiskey voice rock vocals and "The Kid's" badass funky synthesizer is mind blowing. The 2 of them together is a dream team pairing. But I never thought I'd see Stevie in a choreographed dance video with a disco vibe. But it's cool. A masterpiece in my opinion.👌
Still a banger after 41 years. It’s got a great melody, Stevie’s unique and passionate vocals, Prince’s memorable keyboard riff laying down the foundation and the late great David Williams (who played on Billie Jean) on the cool and funky rhythm guitar during the bridge 2:26
She is the only artist I know of that has not had singers copy her. Her voice is one of a kind and absolutely fabulous. Forever, the one and only, The One!

People have driven the word Iconic into the ground in recent years. They call everything iconic. But Stevie Nicks is truly deserving of the word ICONIC .
agree, Most of our ICONs have passed away. The music of the past made ICONS, not everyone is a legend, no matter album sales or award noms. we have very few ICONs left and legends even more so. Todays POPULAR artists won't become legends. Meaning, changing MUSIC, talent and writing and owning their own music and able to play it, write it, produce it, arrange it. ALONE.
I'm 66 retired living abroad on the beach and still rocking to their songs everyday. I was so much in love with STEVIE😅 So many good memories of the 70s
Soon approaching was my graduation from junior high. I was a happy kid then. The MUSIC throughout ALL of 1983 was the best and most memorable of my entire life, and I still love and listen to Stevie even today. Probably my favorite female artist.
Born in 79. This is forever on my playlist..I watched “Top Gun” last night too lol even though I was in navy aviation and the movie is hilarious once I saw the my exact job could’ve never killed Goose
"Stevie Nicks has often told the story of how she wrote the song. She wrote it on the day of her marriage to Kim Anderson on January 29, 1983. The newlyweds were driving up to San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara when Prince's song "Little Red Corvette" came on the radio. Nicks started humming along to the melody, especially inspired by the lush synthesizers of the song, and "Stand Back" was born. They stopped and got a tape recorder and she recorded the demo in the honeymoon suite that night. Later, when Nicks went into the studio to record the song, she called Prince and told him the story of how she wrote the song to his melody. He came to the studio that night and played synthesizers on it, although his contribution is uncredited on the album. Music from the 80's never gets old. Now I see the videos with the songs and realize how old all of us from this decade has gotten. Its pretty mind blowing to see all of us now and how much time has passed and flew by quickly. I'm in my late 50s now.
Yeah I know it growing old sucks everything was so much better back then MTV videos 4 channels of good TV now we have 600 channels of crap and the music from today sucks as well everything is tasteless and phony and lousy thank God for recreational drugs
In 1980, I graduated from high school, stepping out of the wonderful disco era of the 70's and taking a giant leap forward into the 80's - I've never been the same since. :)

This song reminds me so much of my mom, who passed away in 2009. She would always jam to Stevie Nicks. Miss you Ma. 🕊️
💕💕💕💕
Always someone in the comments referring to a dead relative. Keep it light.
Sorry to tell you, but Stevie nicks is a SATANIST! Your momma is at home ...and you will see her when it's your time! GOD IS GOOD 🙏🏾
I'm African American before there was Bet there was MTV and when I tell you I loved me some Stevie Nicks ❤ Wow I wish I could bring back those days 😢 😪 I miss the 80s so much .

Same here, this was the jam! Loved and Rocked to the big 80’s
Born in 72,child of the 80s ,was a great time to be alive ,only one raspy Stevie nicks.
agree born same year, 80's were the best and love Stevie
Yup my friend....same year....we had it good in the 80s.
73 here…we were the lucky ones ❤
The 80s were fab
80s best decade ever
Stevie Nicks solo song really caused the music world to "Stand Back". Four decades after it became a hit this beat never gets old.
2023 NEVER GETS OLD.
❤
This song is in my practice list on keyboards. I play it every day.
Her voice is iconic. One word for Stevie Nicks, queen.
The love of my youth. I still get gossebumps if I watch her videos and hear her amazing unique voice. Absolutely fantastic woman. 🥰👍
Makes me feel 17 again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Me too
It was sometime in 1983 I was at home relaxing after a long hot day of work with an adult beverage and turned on the TV and it was Friday night videos and there was this video! That was the night I fell in love with Stevie Nicks! Her look, her voice, her presence! Every time I watch this video it takes me back to that night! Thanks Stevie! 😘
I totally agree. There’s only one of her kind.
Omg Friday night videos. I forgot all about that. Great times
She's way older than me..
But the Crush is real.
She's mystical.
A great way to start the weekend in the 80s.
April 1986, CAR RADIO. I gave my neighbor a ride to her father's house. I gleefully watched my neighbor singing out loud, jamming with a baby in her lap!!😄😄😄😄😄😄😄❤❤❤❤
It’s 2023 and I’m still listening to this!! Definitely a classic!!!

Lanie Gardner is great!
Elaine Edenfield from the GA band Warehouse
❤️
There are actually a few, and they do her great justice too I might add!
Linus Love does an ABSOLUTELY fantastic cover of this song which is still one of my favourites of all time, check it out :)

I was thinking the same thing!!!
2021 Stevie Nicks is the only woman that has two nominees for the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame. Pureeeeee
Not two nominees, two inductions! Once as a member of Fleetwood Mac and once for her solo career.
@@johnlongeway1037 Well put - she has been inducted twice as you say, not nominated.
Pat Benetar?
@@patriciamccravy9461 🤢 🤮 no competition
@@patriciamccravy9461 I like Pat Benatar a lot, but she is not in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame, and has never been nominated, unfortunately. I suspect one day she will be.

This is very nostalgy. The best chemistry of Prince and Stevie Nicks.
I remember when this song hit the air waves. I was like, Damn, she is amazing.
She was already amazing on Buckingham Nicks ten years earlier 😉
I’m sooo blessed I grew up in the 80’s!!!!! Best music Ever!!!!!!!
Feel exactly the same
People have driven the word Iconic into the ground in recent years. They call everything iconic. But Stevie Nicks is truly deserving of the word ICONIC .
She's lasted generations & still amazes us all with her talent & music!!
agree, Most of our ICONs have passed away. ALONE.
Stevie hardly blinks to not blinking at all. Just looking into our soul filling it with this beauty of music
I'm 66 retired living abroad on the beach and still rocking to their songs everyday. I was so much in love with STEVIE😅 So many good memories of the 70s
She will always remain one of my favorite
She's a Queen is her RIGHT ❤🤍🤍🔥
Released on May 19th, 1983. 41 years and 2 days ago. What a powerful song.
My mom's 30th birthday 😮
My 9th bday
Soon approaching was my graduation from junior high. I was a happy kid then. The MUSIC throughout ALL of 1983 was the best and most memorable of my entire life, and I still love and listen to Stevie even today. Probably my favorite female artist.
Born in 79. This is forever on my playlist..I watched “Top Gun” last night too lol even though I was in navy aviation and the movie is hilarious once I saw the my exact job could’ve never killed Goose
I love the bass synth
Stevie is a force. Thank you God for blessing us with this amazing voice and legend.
This song is a national treasure. Prince and Stevie!!! I can never get tired of either of them. My fav male and female singers.
He and Nicks did agree however to split the publishing royalties on the song 50-50. Then, she says, "he just got up and left as if the whole thing happened in a dream."
Partially correct....it was '1999' playing not 'Little Red Corvette'. Listen to the keyboards on both songs.
I Love Stevie and this Song 🎶just today i though...it does Sound as if prince wrote it...😊
@000 It's true.

This is her telling that exact story above! At her concert. Beautiful story. When she says she thought her and her girls were dressed up.... than prince walked ln!
Music from the 80's never gets old. Now I see the videos with the songs and realize how old all of us from this decade has gotten. Its pretty mind blowing to see all of us now and how much time has passed and flew by quickly. I'm in my late 50s now.
Hello Donna
I'm right with you ...I love the 6o, 70 and 80 music
How are you doing nice meeting you online? Where are you originally from
Yeah I know it growing old sucks everything was so much better back then MTV videos 4 channels of good TV now we have 600 channels of crap and the music from today sucks as well everything is tasteless and phony and lousy thank God for recreational drugs
52 and the 80s represents an entire generation Gen X and the music doesn't get better
Just another unbelievabley amazing hit 🎯 by the great stevie nicks!!... Simply unparalleled!!👍🎯👌!!
Stevie’s voice is just phenomenal! I’ve never heard anyone ever get close to her sound. Incredible!
Kim Carnes- Bette Davis Eyes. Kate Bush- running up that hill
In 1980, I graduated from high school, stepping out of the wonderful disco era of the 70's and taking a giant leap forward into the 80's - I've never been the same since. :)
The White Witch. Love this song. No current female singer can touch her.
She has a sound and style all her own

Amazing that Stevie can do country, hard rock, soft rock, ballads, and this has sort of a disco feel. You wouldn't think such a distinct voice could also be so versatile.
Sort of like a precursor/bridge to 80's Eurodance/synth pop.
Plus, she wrote or cowrote all or most of her music

*Stand back*
[Verse 1]
No one looked as I walked by
Just an invitation would have been just fine
Said no to him again and again
First, he took my heart, then he ran
No one knows how I feel
What I say, unless you read between my lines
One man walked away from me
First he took my hand
Take me home
[Chorus]
Stand back, stand back
In the middle of my room, I did not hear from you
It's alright, it's alright
To be standing in a line (Standing in a line)
To be standing in a line
I would cry
[Post-Chorus]
La la la la la la la la la
La la
La la la la la
[Verse 2]
Do not turn away my friend
Like a willow, I can bend
No man calls my name
No man came
So, I walked on down, away from you
Maybe your attention was more than you could do
One man did not call
He asked me for my love, and that was all
[Chorus]
Stand back, stand back
In the middle of my room, I did not hear from you
It's alright, it's alright
To be standing in a line (Standing in a line)
To be standing in a line
I would cry
[Post-Chorus]
La la la la la la la la la
La la
La la la la la la la
Doo-doo, doo-doo
La la la la la la la la la
La la la la
La la la la la, wo-ah
[Breakdown]
So, I walked, walked down the line, away from you
Maybe your attention was more than I could do
One man did not call
Well, he asked me for my love, that was all
[Chorus]
Stand back, stand back
In the middle of my room, I did not hear from you
It's alright, it's alright
To be standing in a line (Standing in a line)
To be standing in a line
I would cry
[Outro]
Need a little, need a little sympathy
Well, I need a little sympathy (Cry)
Well, I need a little sympathy
Well, you could be standing in (Stand back)
Well, you could be standing in (Stand back)
Well, you could be standing in (Stand back)
Take me home
Take me home (Stand back)
Won't you take me home?
Well, I need a little sympathy (Stand back)
Well, you could be standing in (Stand back)
Why don't you take me home?
Why don't you take me home? (Stand back)
Take me home (Alright)
Take me home (Alright)
