      www.ebay.com/itm/174344166205 I forgot to say this in the video but I had to use a washer under the part that presses on the spring because the tool came just barely too big to fit on top of the spring retainer. I got this washer for the hardware store for 15¢ and just glue it / jb weld i it to the bottom of the tool. You’ll see what I’m talking about when you do it. If not let me know

    Hey I just wanted to say thank you for the clear in depth video and for all your answers in the comments. I have a 94 Lincoln town car with the same 2 valve 4.6 and its smoking habit has been getting worse and worse it’s starting to chug oil regularly. I thought I’d need an air compressor or 1,000 feet of yarn to do this job but your TDC for every cylinder method makes perfect sense and means I could do it without a compressor so thanks for all the info you posted. I hope I’ll be able to do this job on my car and get it to go another 100,000 miles

    I just did this. It's true, for a 4.6 you don't need to use a rope or compressed air. Just rotate the piston to the cylinder you're working on to TDC. There is no need to remove the camshafts but you do need to remove the camshaft girdles and you will need a special tool to push down on the valves to remove the keepers.
    That said if you're going this far to replace the valve stems you might as well install new valve springs. OEM is 7$ each or go with the upgraded beehive PAC springs.

    • @trbuilt5181
      @trbuilt5181  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yep the only thing i regret is not putting in some good valve springs so it would be easier to drop in cams in the future

    I did the same on mine without the compressor trick (didn't have the correct fitting). I stuffed the first 4 cylinders full of yarn (boy was that time consuming). Then I realized the pistons were right on the valves at TDC and saved a bunch of time not fooling with the yarn. Good video though! I'm the guy with the yellow gt at the track BTW.

    I need to do it on my 06 explorer with the 3 valve 4.6. I know I need to use different tool, but I also thought about not using the compressor. So basically you do a cylinder at a time and just put it in TDC, replace the seals, and move to the next one and bring it to TDC again. And all that 8 times, correct ? I would feel better if the piston is supporting the valves.

      Yep i would recommend changing timing chains and guides, and the valves go down and touch the piston. It is not possible for you to drop a valve if you do it this way as long as you put the valve spring back on before you turn over the engine, and follow me on Instagram I twin turbo’d my car and blew it up in 2 weeks

    No issues after install? I've heard the air compressor is so you don't have to compress the springs as much. I've even seen some spring compressor tools that come with a shim you stick in to the spring so you won't over compress it.

    • @trbuilt5181
      @trbuilt5181  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope still runs perfectly fine with no issues

    • @trbuilt5181
      @trbuilt5181  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Even if the spring over compresses the valve is already stopped and it won’t be pushing down on the cylinder with any force as soon as it pops off the keepers that’s it. No more pressure on the valve. Just make sure you don’t rotate the crank while your in that state

    • @martinmartinez8161
      @martinmartinez8161 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@trbuilt5181 thanks for the reply. My concern was for the integrity of the valve spring since you have to compress it farther to compensate for the distance that the valve dropped. Good to know it won't cause any issues.

    • @trbuilt5181
      @trbuilt5181  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s almost as far as the spring actually goes while the engine is running, the only thing that changes is that your stopping the valve from moving so you can pop out the keepers/locks to you can remove the spring
