    4.6 two valve is one of the best motors ever built. My crown victoria is dead simple to work on and drives so smooth. Not that bad on gas and believe it or not handled new jersey snow ok. About as classic you can get for a daily driver car in 2021

    I picked up a clean 2000 GT coupe with only 141,000 original miles back in June for $3,800. Between using it for pizza delivery and some road trips I’ve already put 7,000 miles on it in the couple months I’ve owned it. One of my dreams cars since I was a kid. I love the thing but I found out the hard way about those damn spark plugs blowing out. Happened to me tonight during a delivery. Nearly messed my shorts it was so loud. Had to go home and get it towed to a shop. Fingers crossed that’s all it is and no other damage occurred.

    I have a 97 Cobra. Love it, I've been N/A, a 76mm turbo setup, and now I'm gathering parts for a C head swap with a gen 5 Whipple. I've never ran into any problems with the engine, it's been fabulous. Even when I rebuilt it it had 140k hard but maintained miles and the bearings/bores looked great. It's still on the 1st built bottom end with the teksid block, cobra crank, manley rods, and diamond pistons, only 11k miles since it's just a date night/fair weather driver now for fun. It's a very well designed engine, durable, reliable, etc. Of course the stock rods and pistons outside of termis aren't bulletproof but if you do the work yourself it's not too bad to build it/stud it.

American racing exhast. It is a real pleasure to drive, sounds great, has nice power and charger whine. Really wouldnt want much more power in a convertible. Car sits in the garage under cover. Averages 20+ mpg on long trips or more depending on the right foot.

    Even the somewhat lack-luster Non-PI 2v cars were a fantastic stepping stone for performance. Everyone jumped on the pi bandwagon because it was an easy way to pick up 35hp over the npi car but almost all of the gains are the intake manifold and cams, both of which can plop onto a stock NPI car for less than a couple hundred dollars, or in my case less than $100 from the junkyard. The early heads have just as much potential as the pi head and have none of the disadvantages. No plug blowout, thicker deck surfaces to seal better, as well as having much more piston to valve clearance over a PI head. The mildest of proper NPI drop in cam grinds advance the intake valve so far that they would bend valves in a stock pi car. You had guys like Johnny Langton who stayed na with their 4.6 2v npi cars and when he was equipped with stock pi cams, stock pi intake manifold, and renegade ported npi heads, he put his 3700lb automatic Thunderbird down the 1/4 mile and went 12.98 before dropping in comp 270s and running 12.01. What this really shows is gearing and traction make more of a difference for accelerating than raw power. However, it also proves that even the most mild of 4.6 2v engines has the potential to be competitive in racing. They will also turn 300k miles of daily driver duty if that's whats needed. For the cost of these cars, it really does make me appreciate what a good time it is to be an auto enthusiast. I picked up my Mustang for litterally next to nothing in a junkyard with a cracked plastic manifold. Did the swap to pi parts in the yard, and drove the sucker home. That was 3 years ago and now its getting 99 dohc tumble port heads and cams for less than the price of a used pi engine.

    My Mustang is a 2003 V6 automatic. I didn't buy it for a muscle car, I just wanted a nice looking two door RWD American car. I have the 4.6 2 valve engine in an '06 Crown Vic. It had 97K miles on it when I bought it. It now has 429K miles on it, and still runs like new. The ONLY thing I have had to do, besides regular maintenance was replace one alternator. I change the oil every 3000 miles. Most of those miles are highway and it has a 2.73 rear axle, so it cruises at 1500 rpm at 65 mph, just above idle. The 4.6 2 valve can last half a million miles with the 2.73 axle if they are properly maintained and not abused. Not likely to last that long in a Mustang. I also drain whatever coolant I can get out through the radiator drain every 9K miles and replace it with Ford Motorcraft Gold. I replaced the AOD transmission pan with an aftermarket one, with a drain plug. Every 9K miles I drain out 5 quarts (thats all that comes out of the pan) and put 5 quarts new Motorcraft Mercon VI back in it. Every 27K miles I drain it, drop the (empty) pan, and replace the filter, with new fluid. The transmission has also lasted 429K miles, unbelievable for an automatic transmission. The AOD transmission on the Mustang 3.8 V6 and the Crown Vic 4.6 look the same. The same pan and filter fit both. You can get a rebuilt 4.6 2V long block for pretty cheap, and not have to deal with problems a used engine may have.

Upon inspection i was told they upgraded the rear to stronger tubes less prone to bending and upon my own inspection see they replaced the intake manifold removing the plastic. Runs hot, but haven't did any water pump work yet, anyways. Does really good burnouts, and unless the speedo is incorrect I tipped 150mph (in like a 3 mile stretch) Great video, hope mine gets to 400 hp one day but doubtful with the way the car scene and govt restrictions are becoming.

    I have one the motor is strong. The big problems is they shoot out spark plugs from the head all the time, fixed them over and over, the car is a headache and it has issues where it’s un drivable quite often despite preventative maintenance. But it’s pretty bullet proof imo. I fix it good for 3 months then something breaks. Granted I have 170k miles

Mine has a few bolt ons: Cold Air Intake (a real one), 75 mm throttle body plenum, underdrive pulleys, x pipe off-road exhaust with flowmasters, and 4.10 racing gears. She revs and goes noticeably faster than stock. Also bought Koni shocks and struts and 285 staggered tires to help with launch. Going to have a stage 1 clutch put in soon. Stock clutch feels like it slips sometimes.

    The first sn95 4.6 2V, was a modest let down. Weighs more than the 5.0, bigger, and makes the exact same power, at a higher rpm. I guess it's honestly a blue red choice between a 95 and a 96 gt, but I'd much rather take a lighter engine that makes the same at a lower speed, and from what seems like a more durable engine.

    I'm "glad" to hear that I'm not the only one that had to replace an alternator. I replaced mine at 72,000 miles and upgraded to a 130A (since I had planned to install an aftermarket amp - which I did).. If I understood you correctly, the pistons can be upgraded to the ones used in the Cobra? I've considered doing a coyote swap but I might stick with the stock engine. Hopefully I won't have to do anything major with the transmission or engine anytime soon. One other question, what torque setting do you recommend for the spark plugs. I've heard that 20 ft-lb is adequate and not to use anti-seize. I do enjoy my 2002 GT in sonic blue even though it's not the most powerful.

    • @dannyjohnsonsgarage
      @dannyjohnsonsgarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      14 ft lbs is pretty good- too tight and they mess up the threads and eject the plug, too loose and they also can be ejected from back and forth knocking. The pistons and rods can both be changed out for Terminator ones so they are forged, but when you change the pistons it affects the compression ratio, which they dropped on the Terminator ‘s for safety. They were a little too conservative so you could be OK keep in the 9.5:1 in the gt to make some more power over the cobra 8.5:1

I get pretty good gas mileage, and I don't want to blow that out of the water. I just would like 50 or so more horsepower to play with and move my big handicap vehicle down the road when needed. My recommendation is looking into a couple of bolt ons, not sure what you have, but, a good tune($300-$500) easily 25 hp, a set of Screaming Demon Coils (American muscle has them for about 100$) a good set of msd 10.5mm wires, and plugs, a good 10hp, underdrive pully kit ($150) for 5 hp, running you around $800, but if you want, 2v are completely capable to make 300 with a heavy tune

    I have a 4.6 v8 for my f150. I suspect the rings are bad because it has 2-3 cylinders with low compression. And the spark plugs for those cylinders are covered in oil. I noticed my dads truck is misfiring now as well. And some of his spark plugs are covered in less oil. But still oil nonetheless.
    Do these engines have a history of going bad via the rings? Or is it us just getting super unlucky. We bought these trucks cause they ran fine. But both trucks with the same problem?? We change the oil regularly, so my best guess is the previous owners didn’t change the oil or something….
