  • HOW TO TELL IF CAR BURNS ENGINE OIL FROM VALVE STEM SEALS OR PISTON RINGS
In this video we will explain how to find out if a car burn oil from piston rings or from valve stem seals. The two most common causes for excessive oil consumption are worn piston rings or bad worn valve stem seals. The valve stem seals will let oil drip in the cylinder and your car will burn engine oil, while the piston rings will not collect all the oil from the cylinder wall and that will lead to excessive oil consumption and burning oil. We will explain how we usually find out whether your car is burning oil because of bad piston rings or from bad valve stem seals. It is a simple method that should guide you in the right direction to figure out if you need new piston rings or valve stem seals.

    awesome video!
i want to add that if you have blue smoke on deceleration (letting off the gas pedal) it’s another sign your valve seals or guides are worn. letting off throttle causes a vacuum on the intake side, drawing oil through worn seals.
    also check your spark plugs!
worn valve guides will usually accumulate oil on only one side of spark plugs.
if spark plugs are entirely covered in oil, this indicates piston rings.
that’s all i know on blue smoke, hope this helps someone.

I went for automotive tech but it was a joke man. 30 mins of “class time” where we we’re actually educated and the other 6.5 hrs was shop work where the instructors would only come out if they had a side job they were making money off of while exploiting the student’s free (to the instructors) labor and eagerness to work on something. I only stayed long enough to get certified to use a multi meter. I learned more in this video than I did spending 1500$ on one semester of school lol all it’s good for is the paper that says you sat through it all or as they call it “certification”.
My truck actually went out on me coming home from school so obviously I just had it towed to the school. I did enough deducting to narrow it down to either blown head gasket or intake manifold gasket, but when I came to the instructors for some input or directions, all they said was “check the spark plugs” no context or anything but I was way past that and they wouldn’t even come look at it or anything, so I ended up having to drop out…
“I had to drop out of automotive school because my truck broke down” sounds really fucking dumb without context lol

    • @jasonmckenzie9936
      @jasonmckenzie9936 ปีที่แล้ว

@jrattackk I understand. The instructor here actually does try to educate and make sure we know what we are doing, he's always busy helping and I can respect it enough to stick around. Seems like some instructors or vested in their students ans others, well, not so much.

When it warms up then it's smoking constantly bad smelling grey smoke and when leaving from the traffic lights it puffs out a blue smoke and the exhaust smells like burning oil real bad. Cylinder 6 spark plug is covered with oil and all the other spark plugs looks ok only two other cylinders had ash deposits on spark plugs. Compression is ok so what do you think CCV or bad piston oil rings?

Usually does it for about 5 mins. It is using a lot of engine oil too and does smell like oil burning when it's smoking. I do have downpipes but still have secondary cats. Any ideas what it could be. @@TIMTIM-xm5pr yes, the oil is definitely coming in from the vacuum lines off of the valve covers not just the PCV but the other vacuum lines on the other head. The baffling in the valve cover that is supposed to only allow Blow by gases to pass isn’t working and allowing oil to pass as well. I found oil saturating my air filter, and in the intake tube and in the intake manifold. I installed two catch can reservoirs. One for each valve cover. They fill up after a couple weeks. I probably should just replace the valve covers, if I can find them. My car is 30 years old. I hope this helps

What if the car consumes oil but the exhaust smoke is white? My Seat Leon MK2 doesn't have rough rpm but has a small pending rpm at coldstart, after the coldstart goes down (15-20 sec) then idle is good. White smoke comes out even when warm. I don't see any waterleak because it is on same level all the time. I know these EA888 gen 2 engines have issues, but what I experience doesn't match with what I experience. High consumption of oil but white smoke. Waterlevel is good but not oil level. Am I missing out something? Thanks man, your videos are the best!

Ok I’m confused, based on my compression test, it’s the valve seals - I did a leak down test and still had no compression after doing dry compression test.
150-150-0-150 compression test readings (cyl. 3 is dead)
    - it’s burning oil constantly
I replaced the pcv - it was faulty from day 1 - I believe it’s what caused the blown valve seals on cyl. 3 from too much oil pressure. (intake manifold was full of oil when I replace the pcv)
Engine is 2.0l Cobalt SS Turbo LNF - has 20k kms - prior history of blown valve seals
    Thoughts?

If your car is a diesel with DPF, can we see smoke on the exhaust too?
(some say that the DPF catches all the smoke an then we cannot diagnose if the problem is piston rings, or turbocharger)

His offshore accent is so strong that a USA English speaker will have some problems with the video sound... Most fellows do not have any idea how to do car mechanic work like taking part of an engine apart and rebuilding it in a car they use to drive in. This man is a car mechanic.... he is not a regular and unskilled person.

i actually have a car with broken piston(broken piece from the side area) and it does only smoke at min rpm, once i start driving it doesn't smoke anymore until i don't release the pedal gas again

Unfortunately this does not apparently cover all scenarios :( . I have a mower that loves to burn oil, but how much it smokes seems to depend on orientation of the mower or where I am in the yard, don't always notice clouds, usually they aren't there right when it starts up, but they seem intermittent... I guess it must be burning it all the time though because I throw half a quart in and sand blast the spark plug for that cylinder every single time I mow. Guess I need to visually inspect those valve seals first, that's the low hanging fruit.

What I don't quite understand with these oil consumption issues are if the catch can isn't catching much oil from the PCV and you have no smoke from the exhaust where is all the oil going? I have a Mini R58 N14 engine which has all the classic symptoms of high oil consumption (1 quart per 500 miles or so) but no smoke, little oil in the catch can and no oil leaks so where is it going? If it is going out the exhaust which is the only place that makes any sense why has my catalytic convertor not been destroyed or thrown an error and how do I pass yearly emissions tests? - I give up!!

Approx How much oil can you burn in a 6 cyl if the VALVE STEM SEALS are all bad? Could you burn a 1/2 quart or 3/4 quart of oil in 250 miles if those VALVE STEM SEALS are bad?

What about a faulty turbo? Couldn't this also be causing the engine to burn oil?
