- A quick video showing how easy it is to attach external storage to the Xbox One. In this instance I'm using a 4TB Seagate drive.
I haven't bothered to upload the unboxing video for the Seagate HDD as I thought there was enough to see here.

That's not proprietary connector. That's a standard USB 3.0 connector. Glad to see that any xhd will work and not just licensed hds

I plan on getting this one today but I was going research because I saw the Seagate one that was GREEN and for Xbox one and 360 so I kept browsing and saw this one which is like 30 dollars cheaper and is still 2tb...if it works for Xbox it's good enough for me plus I like the design on it rather than the all green!

i bought a Seagate 2TB hard drive that was advertised for PS4,xbox one, and PC and it only cam with the on power wire like in this video. mine is exactly like yours except that its 2TB. but when i plug it into my xbox it does do anything, when i plug it into my PC it never shows up. it allows me to "eject" it but never shows up as an optional storage device. it did however at one point while attached to my PC mention installing all the proper files but then never came back and still doesn't show. currently i have it attached to the xbox one waiting for it to do something but all it does is beep very softly. not sure if this is normal or not.

I called my 2tb hd Extra Life. So the back of the console is where you connect it? Good thing I moved it to the rear USB before watching it. Other than formatting it, I've already done that three weeks ago after I bought mine from Best Buy. Great video, man.

The only thing about these types of external hard drives is that there are no air vents to help keep the drive cool when connected, it would be nice if the console had a hard drive health check sensor to alert the user if a external drive is over heating or about to fail in order to replace another one.

Super Beaastly I am deeply in love with this console & I've been playing PC game since I was 13 & my gaming PC crapped out on me roughly 5 months ago & could only afford an Xbox one S in console not buying the new part I needed to have my PC in running healthy order... Nice video I'm thinking of getting one for my Xbox1 since I got a 4TB for my PS4 which has 500GB built in so its a big Improvement. But there's on things that bothers me when you said when you got yours it didn't a need power cable (1:14) so when I got mine it need a power cable, which not a problem for me since I got some free sockets to plug it in, but even still I'm confused as to why mine is different then yours? did buy it from a shop or did you buy it online?

Just curious after hooking up an external drive and installing games, etc on it, does the "My Games" section show all the games on one page or does it show all games for the internal and only shows games that are on the external drive if you select the external drive?
Like if you have 5 games and game 1 and game 2 are on the internal drive and game 3, game 4 and game 5 is on the external drive. When you go to "My games & apps" on the Xbox One, will it show the whole collection (games 1 through 5) on the page/list. Or will it only show what's on the internal drive until you select the external drive?
Right now I have 26 games downloaded and installed on my 500 GB Xbox One using 92% of the drive (between games and apps). Now if I move most of them to an external drive, would all 26 show up if I just started the Xbox and went to "My games & apps" - would it populate a list of all games from all drives on one page?
John Thorpe You can actually choose how you display it (and it's easy to change the display). You can show all games or just the games on the internal drive or just those on the external drive. Hope that helps.

I just bought a 20tb harddrive, does anyone know how long that would take to format?
I have a seagate 5tb external and when u turn off the Xbox , the hard drive stays on. Is there a way to turn off the drive once I turn off the Xbox or will it always stay on . Only way I can get it to turn off is by doing a full shutdown . Or can I unplug the drive once the Xbox is on sleep low energy mode and before I turn on the Xbox I plug back In ?

Joe FYI those vents on your Xbox are for cooling shouldn't really block them or keep in enclosed spaces.
Matt Harrie there's actually more space than it looks like on the video. But it's of no matter anyway as the Xbox is now on the top of the unit. Cheers, though.

Ale m I can't give you a definitive answer on that, as I haven't tried it but, yes, I should think that would work. Obviously you'd need to log on with your account name and password first.

Hey in the beginning when it shows the amount of storage on the external hard drive, it only says 3.6 TB was unformatted. Does that mean the other 0.04 TB was or what?
TYLERMARTIN it’s pretty much a scam where it shows gg that means gigabit not a gigabyte developers have been doing it for ever. If you have a Xbox that came with 500 gb that pretty much means about 400 gb. If you want to know how I know is because when I have 50% storage used it showed I have 180 gigs lift and half of 500 is not 180

You can install directly to the USB drive.

Total RadGamer Well, I've not got my hands on one yet, but yes. That's how it's designed to work, and is exactly what I did when I moved from my original Xbox One to my S. All you should need to do is sign in to the X1X and you're good to go.

If you download games into your external hard drive can you still play them as long as its connected? Cuz from what i understood with the ps4 if you just have the external drive connected you can have games saved in there but cant play them.
Brandon Guedea Yes. When you connect the drive you get the option to used it for media or for games and apps. If you select games and apps, the drive functions exactly like an internal hard drive and you can set it as the drive to install all new games apps to.

I have a seagate 1.5 tb, but when i plug it into my xbox, it wont recognize it. the light lights up on the hard drive, so i think its working, my xbox just wont see it in storage or anywhere. any ideas?

As regards the drive, I'm still using it. It's working really well. I probably need to upgrade it again at some point, though, as it's nearly full. Not sure how I managed that but there it is. I've never had a problem with the drive and would recommend it to anyone.

So if i took the the xbox 2tb at the store i would be in regret now. As they 4 near the same price.
8tb drives exist since u filled your own but i want usb powered only. I will obtain the 1x this year and since i have or will obtain fewer titles than you, 1x patches or its console replacement are the way i see 4tb coming anywhere near full.

King Aero I don’t see any reason why not. The drive I use for gameplay captures on the Xbox is a 2.5 inch drive inside a USB 3.0 enclosure.

It’s up to you. You can leave them where they are and only put new games on the usb drive or you can copy them accross.

Yeah, that's to do with the way that space is measured on hard drives. You'll find similar happens when you use a drive in windows or anywhere else.

You should be able to. If the game is disk based you will have to use the disk, though, as the console will check for it. That's the same whatever drive you are installing to, though.
Hello.... I put the same model of HARD DRIVE and noticed that some games of be slow in some cutscenes, little engasgos, and it gets worse more when the games are the retrocompativeis of 360. What do you suggest?
Daniel Aguiar Can you say which games give you this problem? I haven't experienced the problem myself but I could have a look and see if I can replicate the problem.
Also some backwards compatible games do have issues, apparently. There are workarounds but I haven't tried them. I'll look into that too.

I also used the that same hard drive and just like him had peformance problem. Halo 5 cutscenes, Dead rising 4, Far Cry Primal, GTA V (sometimes), Bioshock Infinite and Halo WARS 2. Can you test it? Since apparently you have HALO 5 can you see the cutscene from opening of the first mission and tell me if it plays smothly on your hard drive.
So will any external hard drive work on Xbox or do you have to get a Xbox external drive for it to work.

I read some reviews that stated the hard drive died about 5 to 6 months later after they purchase it. Is your drive still working fine?

Not sure exactly what I paid for it, but Amazon has them for around £74 at present. Hope that helps.

Seriously, though, yes, they will. I actually took the USB hard drive from my original Xbox, plugged it into my Xbox One S and it worked straight away. All that is required is that you log on with account the games were purchased under.

Lord albert Yu Yes. As long as you set the drive up as system storage (the Xbox will ask you if that's what you want to do) then you will be able to play exactly as you would from the internal hard drive.

i purchased the 3 tb version of the same Seagate external storage, plugged it into to my Xbox but no message popped up. I tried all the usb ports and nothing. any advice ?

Sorry, do you mean will it delete games that are on your internal drive? If that’s what you are asking, then no. You will just be formatting the external drive so it can be used for games and apps.

TrueGangsta Gaming Have you used the drive with a PC before? If you have you may need to format it as a simple partition on the PC first before using it with the Xbox. Failing that, try connecting to a different USB port on the Xbox. Lastly, you could try a new USB cable.

i had it in my xbox for starters but then i wanted to see if i coild transfer the games to my pc but didnt work, i plugged it back in my xbox and didnt recognise it
What about when the drive crashes in game and says DRIVE READY TO BE USED?
Not had that issue to be honest. Sounds like you may have a dodgy connection or even a dodgy drive. Difficult to know without seeing it happen, though. What happens when you reset the Xbox. Does the issue re-occur?
