I suggested a Samsung QVO in this video, but right now the Crucial MX500 is a much better buy, as it's virtually the same cost as the BX or QVO, but a much better drive. I begged the company to let me have it, but no, it has been taken away to a recycling plant of which they declined to share with me where it was going. We live in a society that is full of greed and pollution and it's just sad. Electronics Recycling adds to the pollution problem, once they get sent to the plant and get melted down, it just puts toxins in the air.
Harddisk is hardly ever the problem. However you are right. There's a vid floating around with a guy who bought 15 broken ps4's, where like 11 were perfectly fine.
@@Xfade81 Unfortunately, it's more common than you think, just because you haven't experienced it or have experienced it less than other issues with Xbox Ones, it does happen quite often.

Wow they've made this a lot easier than it first was with the original one haha. I remember having to learn some Linux to get this done and having to use very specific drives so am very glad to here it's changed so much. I appreciate the time and effort that you put into this tutorial! At first I remember when I swapped the original Xbox one hard drive out with the regular hard drive and it took forever damn near to open it up. This one does seem to be similar, but it's very much easier and not to mention with me being an IT I'm waaaaaay smarter on how to open up electronics than I did back then. Definitely was wondering how we get the operating system on it after swapping it out with the SSD and glad that Microsoft actually has a method for this for off-line system update. Once again appreciate your time and thorough description on how to do this and I will be doing this within the next couple of days.
Someone said that load times on a console aren't as quick as a pc's load times so I'd say that it's an unnecessary upgrade in my opinion, unless of course you're in the same scenario
I plan on moving my game installs to an external hard drive then upgrading the internal storage to potentially a 2TB SSD, then just using the internal after moving the games back.
hey dude, if tech classes at school were explained like you explain things you would have alot more kidos passing class n wanting to get into tech, well done and keep up the good work
With as quickly as hard drives fail, Microsoft probably eventually decided "Fine, whatever, lets just let them replace the hard drives themselves. Sony's doing it, so lets do it too." Hence why Microsoft finally put up that page.

I cannot believe MS made it this Easy! There was actually a point where you needed to get another Program to give you and Encrypt the HDD/SSD you wanted with MS's Partitions for the HDD in order for it to work. Now they made it this easy. Holy shit! Thank you for the Upload!!
@@hatsonchickens First of all who is talking about PlayStation, and who needs to Compare or create this challenge that no one is asking for? With PS4 the User was always welcomed to swap out their internal drive, with Xbox it wasn't allowedd and you needed some Mod created Software tools to create more or less a reverse Jail Break.
Another informative video that was very interesting to watch. What i find amazing in each of your videos is that you seem to know exactly how to open up the device without damaging the clips or retainers, or which screws to remove and which not to. Cheers man keep the videos coming.
There's a knack to prying enclosures open which is really really hard to explain, but incredibly valuable to learn. I might make a video about it, as it's something that I see students struggle with often.
I never knew it was that easy to install the system software, I thought we had to prepare the software for the hdd/ssd beforehand on a computer unless that’s for the 360
I think if you go with a drive less than 500GB or more than 2TB (Xbox compatible sizes) then you would have to make some changes not seen here because you need to trick the Xbox into thinking there's a compatible drive there but I wouldn't advise going above 2TB because there can be issues later down the line and less than 500GB is just pointless as there are predefined sizes for each partition so the last time I messed about with a 250GB for an Xbox the actual space for storage turned out to be in the region of 130GB but this was only as a project before I put a 4TB in there
@@DeanD1990 yes i thought there was some script you had to load. Do you have to stick to the size the xbox came with as my nephews came with a 500gb can i use a 1 terabyte with this easy procedure

i thought xbox was like ps where they aloud and supported you replacing the hdd. This looks like they tried to make it impossible to do for the general consumer base.
Been putting this off for a while and just suffering each update as my HDD was failing. Finally got around to doing this and your video was a big help!
Another great video. Performance increase with an SSD really depends on the game being played. Overall an SSD will improve loading time performance on average of 15 - 45 seconds, but bandwidth through the southbridge chip of the Xbox S is limited, so do not expect lighting fast improvements on all games as you would see on a PC for example. The bottle neck is the southbridge, not the SATA header. For reliability it is a no brainier to install an SSD.
Is the south bridge where the sata controller is? A ssd should also kill a hdd in iops as well. Running your os plus games from an ssd should net noticeable gains otherwise you could just use an external ssd.
@@saysbadman The southbridge is a support processor for the APU, basically it handles input and outputs to/from other components on the board (HDMI, WiFI, HDD etc). So even though the SATA and APU can handle higher bandwidth, the southbridge throttles throughput for certain I/Os to allow it to handle the multiple requests without crashing/overheating etc etc
Raw sequential bandwith isn't the problem with HDDs in the 8th console generation. The problem is in HDD's IOPS, seek time and the multiple small files that multiply the seek time. I was thinking for a long time now to change my HDD to SSD on my One S, made the change on my PS3 and PS4 many years ago cause they were extremely easier and didn't involve opening the device completely (i am extremely clumsy and useless when it comes to these delicate actions and i would never wanna damage my devices). Adamant here made it look very casual and made me wanna give it a go now that my primary XB device is a Series X. I have ordered an SSD an i'll try it tomorrow when i have what i need.
For everyone: Quick tip for hdds not ssds. If they stop being recognised, it can sometimes mean dirty contacts or slight discolouring of contacts between the boards and the hdd itself. Where contacts from the drive itself touch the board, use an eraser to go over the discoloured contacts. I had this recently and have had this a couple of times now. Just go over with a soft eraser till they are clean and then you just put it back together and you should be fine. You could use IPA but if you do not have one, and eraser will do so long as it is a soft one and will crumble a bit easier, you do not want too hard in case you damage the contacts. This does mean taking the hdd board off the hdd and cleaning but this does NOT mean the sata power or data contacts. The other contacts between the board and the hdd which is why I say, taking the board off the hdd. This may not be as well known. Provided there is no other issue like clicking and just that it is not being detected, your drive may actually be fine, just clean the contacts on the board to the drive itself which as contacts that are slightly springy, just becareful not to damage anything.
My man! I got a used XBox One S for 80USD (which was a major steal) and it worked fine for a few months then bombed. My little guy was devastated. Also to add so glad my grandad was a electrician it got me fascinated in the innards of electronics and has saved me so much money over the years xD
you simplified this process for me. I thought my original Xbox One got bricked after an update. I figured it was the HDD, so I ordered a newer faster Seagate. I watched other videos with someone running script to mimic an original Xbox One HDD. It didn't work for me. Plus, I think I needed the newest OSU1 update file. Not sure which was the real problem with why the drive wasn't working. But I formated the HDD back to no partition and no labels, installed it, and then did the OSU1 update process and it worked beautifully. I thought I was going to have to trash it. I use it for the kids since I still have the Kinect games they like to play on it. Thanks for this, you don't know how much you've truly helped me and many others.
Good to see that both the PS4 & XB1 can be easily fixed/upgraded with a new HDD or SSD. I believe the 360 required a weird workaround, if you wanted a drive larger than their proprietary addon drives, it requiring copying of specific data from existing drive. So I never bothered trying to upgrade my 360 HDD, whereas I swapped my 80GB PS3 drive for a 320GB HDD. I did end up with a 320GB 360 drive though, as I got the Halo 4 360 in a trade in deal, that was weirdly generous for a GAME deal. Trading a 250GB slim with 1 controller + £100, it got you; the custom clear shell console, 2x custom controllers, 320GB HDD, Halo 4 on disc & fresh warranty.
Stock 360 consoles used whitelisted drives to prevent cheap 3rd party upgrades, but they're still standard 2.5" HDDs in more (phat 360) or less (slim 360) weird enclosures. Fairly easy to circumvent by getting a WD HDD up to 500GB and using "hddhackr 1.40" on your PC to make said WD HDD pretend being one of those whitelisted official drives which the console will then accept. Unfortunately 500GB is the upper limit because no official drive larger than that was ever released that the software could make the new drive pretend to be

I always recommend if doing hard drive replacements in consoles 2-4 TB is the option as a longevity tool 1TB has been obsolete standards since the introduction of blue ray as a standard in console..
@@shooterboi sadly how many games do you play or have you installed on the system>?? I ask this average games these days can meet or exceed 250 GB on install nby the time you install: game day 1 patch 4k DLC mods updates I run all the games on a 2TB external Though I would love to run a 8TB option in an ssd at 1 point..
Just upgraded mine to a Crucial 1TB SSD for $50 from the OEM 500GB HDD so I don't have to rely on an external drive anymore. This video helped me a lot for taking it apart and reassembly, so thank you. Only problem I had was that the OSU refused to run, getting an error code every time. I managed to get it to work by pulling the SSD back out, which the console had formatted and partitioned, and copied all the files from the original HDD over.
So found your video to be helpful! But through my experience I learned that if a console is part of the "Xbox Preview Program," then none of this, including the OSU1 offline update will work, even with a new hard drive. I thought my Xbox One X had a bad hard drive since a recent update got caught in a fail/restart cycle. Replaced the hard drive with a new one, but same issue continued to happen and offline update would always instantly fail. Decided to test the old hard drive with SeaTools and both short and long generic tests passed on the old HHD. So started looking at other issues. Finally was able to determine that the offline update and/or scripts for a new hard drive will not work for a console on the Xbox Preview Program. To do so, the console must be removed (unenrolled) from the preview program and then offline update or even an online update will work. At least that is what worked for me.
How does one unenroll from the preview program if the drive is dead? If there's no network (dead drive and no operating system), then there's no way for the Xbox to communicate (or vice versa) with MS servers...?
@@cezardob You can unenroll from the preview program when logged in on any Xbox. My brother logged into my account on his Xbox, unenrolled my account and console from the preview program. I thought and all errors indicated the drive was bad, but ended up finding out that wasn't the case. It was the Preview Program update that was bad, my drive was perfectly fine. So I wouldn't really know anything about having to deal with an actual dead drive situation, combined with the Preview Program issue.
@@K-tf9vt ok, so that makes sense. It's definitely worth looking into. Thanks for the reply.
@@cezardob yep, valid question. But if you can easily login on another Xbox and unenroll, may be worth the try. Either way, best of luck in getting it fixed.

Actually there isn't problem pushing/touching the top. The metal plate is quite thick + there is always big air gap inside. I mean, to do any damage, you have to hit it hard with something.
You're talking to the guy who doesn't take anti-static precautions. I'm not exactly a model of 'best practises'. But I've also watched work-experience kids holding a laptop HDD in a death-grip while they unscrew the rails on it, so you kinda want to make sure they're not clamping into the top.

@@oneamazingkaboomer yea but you still want to use one with a dram cache in it. If you go to cheap and get one without a dram. It might effect installing big games. It would be actually an interesting test.
@mister.T Jr no no, Dramcache in an SSD makes it much faster. This is something that alot of cheaper SSD's dont have. very shortly how it works is that it saves some data that may accure later on in the cache so it responds much faster. SSD's without this can be times and times slower than the SSD with it. They can be fine without it for light loads but they (in many cases) even gets slower than a normal HDD
Mentioning your costs and pricing was quite surprising. Well done, with a little insight on how to break down an xbox one s. I've I just replaced my 2005 xbox 360 laser and let me tell you; quite a bit to consider, especially when you cant just replace drives without reformatting the motherboards. Great video.
Yea I'm trying to talk more about pricing in order to open up conversation about that. Every now and then some one says I'm a rip-off merchant, but that's often because they haven't considered the costs involved or the fact that yes, I'm in business to make money. So I set my prices, and I try to be transparent about them, and people can make their choice as to where they'd get their stuff fixed. If they've found some kid working from his bedroom who will change their xbox drive for £20 labour, because he doesn't have rent to pay, then good for them, I've got no hard feelings toward that. However, the kid in his bedroom isn't insured, and likely his warranty is worthless. Make your choice.

you have inspired me to tear my kids 360s apart and attempt a fix. Between your videos and Ifixit's tear down pictures and guides im confident I can fix her. Its death was the result of a pack of Nerds candy being dumped into the cooling fan vents... It still boots up just fine but thermal protection shuts down within a couple mins of being on. I don't know if a Xbox 360 will accept an SSD, they are over 12 years old now. Even if you install a HDD you have to configure the drive in a special way before the console will accept it. Unless that has changed recently, in the past you had to use special software on your Pc to "bless" the drive with a special way of mounting partitions.
I'd double check that before you buy anything, i remember looking into it years ago for mine and finding microsoft locked out all but a few specific models of HDD with custom firmware applied to them. I'm actually glad to know they're not that restrictive on the newer consoles. It's one of the reasons i favoured the PS3 at the time, as you could just drop in a generic SSD with no issues...

QVO SSD I would only recommend for archiving purposes. They have small caches and are dram less cache. So once the internal cache is filled up it can depending on the controller run as slow as a mechanical hdd when writing or reading data. Imo if a client is running a SSD as a boot OS drive. Then I'll use a dram cache tlc drive instead. When the cache fills up there is not much of a penalty on write and read performance. Something to keep in mind.
A vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment is the best for removing dust from computers. I've never understood why everyone else seems to use compressed air. That just blows the dust around and potentially pushes it further into places it shouldn't be.
No it doesnt, you use a compressor if it's done properly. Canned air is a joke and expensive. Take the PC outside, hold the fans with your fingers and blow it with an actual air compressor, it will be spotless. Can wipe parts off with a microfiber cloth after and it looks brand new.

I begged the company to let me have it, but no, it has been taken away to a recycling plant of which they declined to share with me where it was going. We live in a society that is full of greed and pollution and it's just sad. Electronics Recycling adds to the pollution problem, once they get sent to the plant and get melted down, it just puts toxins in the air.
it's not always a hdd thats the problem. I've ran into psu, mobo, CD-ROM...

I really didn't know it was that easy. I thought they blocked off-market drives or something.
Me neither man, I'm very surprised.
I wouldn't be surprised but MSFT didn't do it thankfully.
It was that easy until you know how to replace a ps4, ps4 slim or ps4 pro hard disk/ssd without breaking the warranty sticker

First of all who is talking about PlayStation, and who needs to Compare or create this challenge that no one is asking for?
I never knew it was that easy to install the system software, I thought we had to prepare the software for the hdd/ssd beforehand on a computer unless that’s for the 360
it’s similar to installing windows
I think if you go with a drive less than 500GB or more than 2TB (Xbox compatible sizes) then you would have to make some changes not seen here because you need to trick the Xbox into thinking there's a compatible drive there but I wouldn't advise going above 2TB because there can be issues later down the line and less than 500GB is just pointless as there are predefined sizes for each partition so the last time I messed about with a 250GB for an Xbox the actual space for storage turned out to be in the region of 130GB but this was only as a project before I put a 4TB in there
Dean I did more research about it and it seems to be a chipset or filesystem limitation so 2TB is the maximum that the xbox X can support
@@DeanD1990 yes i thought there was some script you had to load. Do you have to stick to the size the xbox came with as my nephews came with a 500gb can i use a 1 terabyte with this easy procedure

so microsoft just lets you do this now? i thought you had to do some relatively shady stuff by cloning OS info with a third party script. this is bonkers. have you gotten any xbox one x's where you had to change the drive? this is great news!
that's what I thought too, crazy that no one is talking about how easy this has become
And running ssd can make your Xbox load games incredibly fast my one x loads gta 5 in 12 seconds
DarkZeroNemesis yeah the one x still has a hard drive though
i thought xbox was like ps where they aloud and supported you replacing the hdd. This looks like they tried to make it impossible to do for the general consumer base.
Hamez88 I mean doing this is pretty easy to be honest, especially if you have even the smallest amount of computer knowledge...
I can only imagine how epic it would be in the Xbone VCR, because from experience they seem to be quite noticeably slower than the S.
Incredibly thorough and well explained. Although I'm looking to do a One X repair instead of a One S, this was still very helpful. Thank you!!
For everyone:
Quick tip for hdds not ssds.
"Quick tip".

@@K-tf9vt ok, so that makes sense. yea the connection cant use the full power of the drive. it is still faster then a hard drive though .
So basicly, dont buy a SSD without Dram cache, ull go better with a normal HDD in that case, and that says alot ;)

Did it work
Do you need to format the SSD before installing?
Can you add a larger ssd like a 2tb or 4 tb drive without problems.
couldn't you get windows 10 on the Xbox if you get the certain os?? I doubt it though because of the Xbox made CPU.
Best tutorial, thank you man, worked like butter for me!
Which hard drive did u get?
Thank you for this teaching! It helped me install an SSD in my Xbox One S. you are a good teacher.
Just had all those problems with my Xbox one S and I will be doing exactly this. Thank you sir for an awesome video!
