I suspect old school GW, circa 2nd edition, kind of expected many players to use roughly half the rules in the books, if that. What with the game being pushed toward a more child-friendly market and all.
Due to its deeper origins in wargames, very old D&D editions had specific rules for how to jump off a horse or vehicle and tackle someone else off of their own. I love stuff like this
I figure the bikers have antennas because they’d range ahead of the main force and need to keep in long range contact. Perhaps the helmet ones are so that when the rider dismounts to scout ahead, they can reach the more powerful vox caster in the bike, which relays the message through it’s flag antenna back to the commander in his rhino or perhaps even in orbit.
honestly shocked GW dropped the mounting and dismounting rule. imagine the model sales so you had a mounted and unmounted version of a squad or the same character.
These old hammer videos are great I’m relatively new to 40k I never played but I have been painting miniatures. Seeing all these old models is awesome especially how well you paint them. I get to experience something new that is old lol.
I played Dark Angels but the vibrancy of those Imperial Fist bikes in the 3rd ed book caught my eye too. Even when I think of Marines I see saturated blues and reds and those yellow, yellow bikes. Excellent work
Oh wow, that box might be a "bit" damaged, but it sure will look great on a shelf, considering its age! Also, I just enjoy your videos, nostalgic, calm, some dry humor here and tehre, old lore and rules, many things to enjoy~
Oh man the Plastic + Metal kit was still around when I picked up Warhammer again in 2011. I have those three dudes in my Space Wolves. It also brings me back to my childhood "playing" warhammer. I had a friend who had a bike. In fact he had a lot of cool oldies - I was always envious because he bought so much, and my parents wouldn't let me buy as much...

Buy some bronze paint for engagement. Also fantastic video. I can’t wait to see the supremacy force. I need to sort my one out. Awesome song, worth waiting until the end for.
Dude, i think we bought the same bikes. I also got some blood angels that were exactly like this for a rescue project. Came with the same metal powersword and stuff. What a coincidence.
to rep a dismounted bike you could use a token system. Have a 1 to 1 sized, top down view of the empty bike and its base, flat token to leave where the empty bike stands. Without a full empty bike mini, thats as good a way as any.
Really love these retro videos. Makes me wish I had the funds to get into 40k when I was first introduced to it back in 2000. Had to settle for starting at tge end of 7th/beginning of 8th
Yep. Used to spend a weeks paper round money on just an ork nob or other such single characters. So excited when I got an Ork battle wagon for Christmas!
I love your dedication to Old Hammer. Your work brings both inspiration and nostalgia in equal measure. It's hard to paint yellows well, but you nailed it. Thank you.
When you decide to dive into airbrushing, I recommend the Badger 200 single action and or Badger 150 double action, two nearly identical bombproof airbruched that will serve you for decades as they served me ! ! !
@@Miniscape-wh40k nah man, looks cracking, defo a wee touch i'll nicking for when i eventually get round to adding bikes to my Dark Angels ( after my Goblin, and necromunda and batman)
Gorgeous job on those bikes. I remember using that metal biker torso for my assault marine sergeant back in the day. I also remember characters on bikes being death traps since I think they were like armor 10 on all sides and half the results killed the rider with no saves of any kind :D
I've been meaning to buy some of those old Dark Angels biker models, to add to my Dark Vengeance style Fallen army. But even those sculpts tend to be pretty pricey on the secondary market, compared to the infantry. So I keep putting them off.
I find myself lost, watching the imagination and dreams of a shared childhood, living vicariously through these videos. I can get much of the satisfaction without spending the $ and trying to find the storage space.
I love how you always explain the emotions behind your decisions, instead of trying to justify all your choices as som how always being logical. Ma favourite parts of your videos is hearing your opinion about the stuff you’re doing
I gotta admit I always hated the Space Marine Bikes. Despite all the demons, psychers and warp shenanigans, one thing even my 10 year old self was not buying was bikes with no ground clearance at all being viable in battle. You couldn't even tilt them sideways for 5° to make a turn without the foot stand hitting the ground.
You've made a 43 year old bloke very happy with your videos, As someone who doesn't have the time to do Warhammer anymore ( I do have a load of Space Wolves from 2nd edition that still need painting from when I was a teenager) I live though your videos! 😅
Heh. I remember these guys. I had a 3-man squad of them in my first Space Marines army, as they were included in the old Space Marines Battleforce box from 3rd/4th edition. The only difference between these old ones, and the ones that have recently been discontinued, sorry "Range Rotation'ed", is that the Space Marine himself was changed so his legs had a ball joint, and the torso and backpack being akin to the Tactical Squad's torsos.
You got a really nice yellow on them, classic Imperial Fists looks. They may be very old sculpts but I've always found a lot to appreciate in them, yours really show them off. I had the same boxed set, captain and two special weapons - still do luckily - but the star of the show in many battles for me was the flamer biker I made with an arm and weapon from the 3rd edition tacticals. I used to play in 500pt skirmishes a lot so every point mattered, and nothing paid for itself more than that flamer, using the bike's speed to get alongside a lined-up unit then place the flame template over seven or eight minis. That plus the bolters of the other two bikes in my little squadron used to routinely reduce even formidable squads to a negligible threat in a single round of shooting.
Greetings and Salutations! Just lovely as always. I have three bikes, just the original all plastic ones, although I turned one of them into a Seargent with a RTB01 Commander head and a Power Sword. However I disapprove of the Special Weapons, they are just weird for a bike rider in my opinion. Your Bike Squad looks lovely, but I must quote another TH-camr, always drill your barrels. All the best, love your content, Billi.
I really enjoy your channel. I don't play or paint or buy these days, but it sits right in the sweet spot between Snipe and Wib Codex Compliant, the painting channels, and the lore channels
Great paint job. Looks really vibrant. Space marine bikes look cool, but the idea of riding a motorbike at high speed, while also trying to fire a big plasma gun or meltagun,...seems mental. I'd fall off.
These look fantastic! I've recently dug out my 3rd edition books.. whilst today I believe from a Hobby aspect, the quality of the miniatures have never been better, there is a wonderful charm that pangs the nostalgia when ever I take myself on a journey back to 3rd edition. Grim Dark, Martial, Regimented.
"My Journey of Reasonable Compromise" is gonna be the title of my autobiography.
I never noticed the chart for dismounting at speed before, that is truly hilarious.

I never realized how much the exhausts on the bikes look like meltagun barrels.
Now there's a conversion idea. Replacing the exhaust pipes with meltaguns, and saying that's what the biker is wielding for their special weapon.

For a quick and easy yellow, I've found ink over a white primer is unbeatable.
that new contrast paint for yellow is also great for that
