4:50 You know the first thing I ever learned about in 40K was Dreadnoughts. I was in a business class (I think) in high school, teacher gave us free time to mess around on the computers. Guy next to me was on a Warhammer wiki (didn’t realize at the time) and started talking to me about these “dead warriors placed inside walking coffins” and how “the oldest living thing in the imperium was a Dreadnought”. I can’t really remember what he said I just thought that was the coolest thing. Got into the hobby proper a few years later and I was grinning like a fool when remembered that conversation in high school.
I used to have this model when I was a kid. I bought it off one of my older brothers friends who no longer played 40k and he was a bit of an artist so it was FAR better painted than any of the models I did myself. Later sold it and all my other minis when I was in my late teens to a guy I knew who wanted to give my old minis to his little brother for a birthday present. I wonder if any of those minis are still kicking about and how many owners they've had at this point. Hell, this models so old it's in lead, at least mine was.
I was 12 in 1996 and i remember this guy very well. I also LOVED the old pewter Orion for Wood Elves. Remember him? that was one of the first more expensive models i had. He would be a nice video i think. CHeers From USA PS i loved the old rules for 40k and the artwork in the codexes was really so much more in tune i feel. I still have a lot of the old stuff like you do.
Thank you. I think it would be a nice video but I don't think I am the one to make it. I have next to zero experience with fantasy unfortunately. Take care buddy
Awesome work as always Matthew, i actually spent decades now thinking that the power scourge was some sort of chaos version of a regular dreadnought CCW (in other words a power fist pretty much), so thanks for clearing that up. On that note, i bet this dreadnought, kitbashed with some loyalist arms and purity seals and such, would make for a very nice venerable dreadnought since it's just so blinged out in fancy trim everywhere and it has a fancy helmet instead of a regular sarcophagus and so on (I've had a blast converting chaos marines into fancy loyalists over a number of years now and it is precisely this era of chaos models that weren't too over-the-top yet, but were just space marines with some extra trim and a few extra skulls and spikes, that are ideal for this type of projects). Keep up the good work!
Mr.Tickle I’m sure has caught eye of slaanesh,I just thinking of the dreadnoughts voice saying to an imperial guard ”I am Mr.Tickles how can I help you today” and wipes out the squad, thanks for the video it’s cool seeing the 2nd edition dreadnought, now I am going to build my new furioso dreadnought with maybe Mr.tickles in mind 😂🎉
love this model, i remember it could go mental an shoot your own men, much to my chaos lords displeasure after to killed his retinue,my opponent laughed, but i loved the randomness of 3rd edition chaos
I can't speak authoritavely, I don't have any information, but those foot claws look like they were used to stop the proclivity of the chaos dreadnought to fall forward.
Ayyyy love old school chaos dreads. I got my hands on one about a year ago, painted it up in emperors children colors and magnetized the basic arms. Didn't even know you could get a hammer and twin heavy bolter option 😮
so strange to see you collect and paint all the Chaos units I collected as a kid... Berserkers, Chaos Terminator 5 pack, Abaddon, Plague Marines and now the Chaos Dreadnought... thankfully I was able to get the thunder hammer... (I also got the old rogue trader chaos dreadnought)
I really love seeing you show off these older models! Has made me interested in collecting a few of my own one day, though sadly the campaign for The Greater Good didn’t start until 3rd edition
I remember way back reading about a Worldeater army (before a dedicated god army was a thing anyone did) who had a dread conversion with 2 Melee weapons. Coolest thing ever.
Always liked this model but only ever managed to get hold of one. I converted mine onto penitent engine legs with the scourge and lascannons. It was also nice to see the space crusade dread, of which I have 4. There was also a larger version of the space crusade dread that was taller and had more weapon options.
No Chaos warbind with even the smallest whiffs of retro fashion is complete without the classic chaos Dreadnought. I love how this band is coming together, and watching you paint the lightning was a big help for me trying to do something similar.
Eyy my first warhammer model. I’m surprised you didn’t try to repair him with a new spiky part. Mine’s somehow survived the decades entirely intact. Well, apart from the superglue holding the arms, I just keep them on loose-like.
Was just going over my dreadnought collection and remembered I've had one of these suspended in a tank of isopropyl alcohol for about a month, which then reminded me of "Chaos Dreadnought, a Dreadnought of Chaos"
If we're being honest, I've never quite clicked with the look of the chaos dread - partly the 'fingers' on the feet make me think of King Kong ape feet, partly the complete helmet stuck in the middle, rather than just the vision slit the Imperial dread has (I'm not fond of how modern dreads have visible helmets either) - but there's no denying you've done a fantastic job on yours. Definitely the right choice to go with a base too, I always felt the baseless look left the studio dreadnoughts looking weirdly incomplete. Thanks also for going over the old psychology rules - one of my pet projects currently is making myself a Helbrute (although I'll be calling it a dreadnought, of course), mainly out of a Paragon Warsuit, and thinking about it as you explained the frenzy and stupidity rules, there's nothing there that's actually illegal under the current rules, it'd just be a personal decision to 'force' the dread to charge or fire according to rolling for psychology. Except maybe firing at my own legionaries isn't specifically covered in 10th, but it's not like my opponent's going to object to that bit...
Of course I'm thinking of this Guy, when I'm thinking about 90ies Iconic Dreadnoughts. (And there is one on my Painting Table, still waiting to get more Paint on it.)
I owned this guy back when I was 12, he was my favourite but an effing nightmare to keep that scourge arm on. I wished I kept him all those years =/. Great painting job.
One part I always liked about this model was the legs, they actually feel like they're in proportion for the machine, the loyalist dreads were always too stumpy in my mind. Like they'd take a step and flop over! Not so with the chaos dreadnought! Hope to score one for myself one day soon, they look like a joy to work on.
Yea I remember seeing those on occasion when the 40k players at a local game store I would play Friday night magic drafts at showed up. Was always a bit of an obscure game for my area that I kinda knew about and honestly looking back wish I’d given a go with sooner. After all it had the modeling element that at the time I was into and had a gaming experience. When I wasn’t playing magic the gathering or video games around that time I was putting together scale model planes and mascar cars. This should have been a no brainer game for me.
Ah Roger Hargreaves manifests in the Grim Dark, truly scary crossover, I suspect Mr Sneeze and Mr Messy are nightmarish children of papa Nurgle. Mindwarp aside, great new addition, I like the Night Lords makeover, nice lightning.
I made a chaos dreadnaught back in the day out of the plastic 3rd edition Loyalist kit for my Thousand Sons force but sadly it didn't have the Plasma Cannon as an option in box so I built one of my own out of a bunch of bits haha
Mine is armed with plasma and power claw and is painted in purple and copper/gold with slaneesh symbols my second is not done and haven't been worked on for over 20 years, but it has noise marine weaponry which was in some white dwarf back in the days.
I have five of this model! Two in my Death Guard army, one in my Iron Warriors army, one in my World Eaters army and one still unassembed. Re the red feet on the Iron Warriors dread - That is most certainly a conversion, done using the claws from the Power Scourge.
I did just buy one of those few days back, so fresh its still in the mail. somehow managed to get a good deal on it. I prefer them over the helbrute, even if it the tentacle arm actually looks like something rather than just a giant power claw, which is genuinely what I thought it was for years.

My Landspeeder and my Falcon have Navigation Lights; Red for port and Green to starboard.
Boaty Mcboat face!!
I do love how you go over the old rules as well as paint them up. No one else does it and it’s great
The old rules are still relevant to me, and I love their flavour.

Agreed. Cheers.
