  • A lot of people debate when the end of the movie parody started. Doug thinks it's with THIS film.
Spy Hard is a 1996 American spy parody film starring Leslie Nielsen (who also executive produced) and Nicollette Sheridan, parodying James Bond and other action films. The introduction to the film is sung by comedy artist "Weird Al" Yankovic, and it was the first film to be written by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer who later went on to write and direct parody films such as Date Movie, Disaster Movie, and Meet the Spartans. The film's title is a parody of Die Hard. The film was directed by Rick Friedberg who produced with Doug Draizin and Jeffrey Konvitz.

Interesting to note that before Airplane The Movie, Leslie was best known for his dramatic roles. And when he played the part, he really played the part. His protagonists roles were heroic as it could get without coming off of a campy and when playing the antagonist. . .hoo-boy. A lot of 'hate sink' characters there. When he switched to more comedy he showed just how versatile he was. He could play any role given him with ease.

Wrongfully Accused is a far better example of trying to do a spoof movie with Leslie Nielsen where it's parodies of numerous movies and shows and had far better hilarious moments in it, mostly helped by the fact that Pat Proft who worked with him on the Naked Gun movies being the director, it wasn't a classic on the level of Naked Gun but it certainly understood its' assignment more than Spy Hard did.

To be fair WA came out a fair bit later and the style is not necessarily so much better as it is different. I felt that SH was going for a bigger audience with a more family friendly take which means very clearly articulated jokes, basic slapstick stuff and funny situations and visuals that even children can appreciate whereas SH had a slightly more mature feel with more daring innuendo, adult themes and more subtle popular culture or cultural references.

@@RagamuffinBabyDoll This might be extra corny, but I hardly ever think of those scenes when it comes to the film. I tend to think of Thomas Andrews and his lines far before any of the typical corny moments. "The pumps buy you time...But minutes only...from this moment on no matter what we do...Titanic will founder....She's made of iron sir, I assure you she can. And she will. It is a mathematical certainty...An hour. Two at most." his whole run down hits so hard. Victor Garber knocked it out of the park; he's so expressive he was able to convey what Thomas must've been feeling during those two hours just through his facial expressions and eyes alone. That scene where he looks at his pocket watch on deck, and the LOOK in his eyes when Rose confronts him at he grand staircase are HAUNTING. He just looks absolutely petrified, terrified, yet just not entirely there either. Like he's dissociating.
He must have had so much guilt for something that wasn't even his fault...it makes sense since he was her architect, but still. If he had survived, I sure as hell hope he wouldn't be blamed for other's stupidity. Not to mention, the ship held out for far longer than what he initially thought in real life; it was thought the ship had a long gash all along the bow, hence why he initially thought she only had about an hour. But if this was true, she would've sunk in minutes.
Titanic sank in about 2 hours and 40 minutes, about the run time of an average film in fact. Her ability to stay afloat for as long as she did, is a testament to her builders and designers. Of those aboard, including Thomas Andrews, no one survived, and as a matter of fact, the blueprints for the RMS Titanic herself, are lost to time. Which is such a shame to think about. Oceanliner always looked so much better to me compared to the big fcking bulky cruise ships of the modern era. Sorry for my essay I fcking love this movie and that ship.

I’m glad you’re reviewing Hollywood Pictures for Disneycember,it really made me miss how Disney used to have Hollywood Pictures(along with Touchstone Pictures) to release films to both younger and older/mature audiences back before they made a really dumb, desperate move in 2019 by acquiring 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Pictures from Fox and the Murdoch family. Disney should’ve never given up on Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures and kept it alive instead of abandoning it after the failure of 2015’s Strange Magic and for their purchase of 20th Century Studios in 2019. Even Disney bought Fox,I still consider 20th Century Studios to be non-canon as part of Disney(buying Star Wars and Marvel is fine, even if Disney mistreated the former with a horrible sequel trilogy in the mid-to-late 2010’s,but buying 20th Century-Fox was a stupid, expensive idea and dumb move to get in on blockbuster content.) I really miss Hollywood Pictures(along with Touchstone Pictures) and Miramax is no longer part of Disney, but now almost part of Paramount Global now.

The problem with a lot of parody movies is that they try to poke fun at everything and everyone all at once rather than poking fun at the movie they're parodying. The original Scary Movie, despite it lampooning a lot of trends and memes of the time, was still fundamentally a Scream parody. The second one while also poking fun at a lot of other movies, was still mostly a parody of The Haunting. The rest of the series, however, is exactly what modern parodies have become.

IMO, the first two Scary Movies are pretty decent. They keep their focus on their specific genres, the first being a parody of slasher films, the second being a parody of haunted house films. However, Scary Movie did kick off the "Movie" genre, and 90% of those are pure trash. They have no focus, relying entirely on pop culture to carry the day. So was Scary Movie bad? No, but it did give birth to the movies that were bad enough to completely ruin the parody genre.

It’s sad that Leslie Nielsen was always dragged into these films. He has genuine talent as a comedic actor, but most people didn’t know how to write good parody. So, this star gets wasted on a flop and less people see him in the same light compared to great films like airplane or naked gun.

I don't think parody is dead. The wrong films just got the exposure. Films like Walk Hard, Zoolander, Tropic Thunder, and Black Dynamite prove parody wasn't dead, it's just not getting as much love and care as it should. At least last year's Weird: The Al Yankovic Story was good, and I have heard mostly good things from Outlaw Johnny Black. Parody will be back.

Now you have to do National Lampoons Loaded Weapon 1, Doug. It's a spoof on all the action films of the 80s and 90s while even spoofing other spoofs. There's a couple of great jokes directed at Hot Shots. It even has Charlie Sheen appear in the film. The fact that it was one of Samuel L Jackson's first films with a main role makes it a true time capsule of the early 90s. The Die Hard reference is also something that I haven't seen another spoof ever do using the actual actor to the film they are spoofing. The cast is also full of very talented actors like Emilio Estevez, Whoopi Goldberg, Tim Curry, Dennis Leary, William Shatner, Jon Lovitz, and the late Phil Hartman.

Jason Friedberg & Aaron Seltzer wrote the original script but Leslie told Rick Fredberg he would accept the project only if he was in charge of the rewrite. Then, the studio asked the writers to include spoofs on other movies although it was supposed to be a James Bond spoof. The director left the movie after the shooting and did not agree with the editing decisions.
Ironically, Dick Chudnow, the co-writer, was Jim Abrahams' best friend during the 70s. Abrahams and the Zucker brothers asked him to join them to create a comedy troupe. Chudnow was the one who found the name Kernel Sanders' Kentucky Fried Theater.

I really think Scary Movie was the ultimate downfall of parody films because of it's sheer popularity. I really do believe that something becoming obscenely popular for awhile does ultimately cause the most damage, since the popularity encourages more awful cash-grabbing copycats.
I'd even go so far as to say that something being "good" or "bad" plays a smaller role than how popular something gets. The minions took over family movies for awhile and kinda changed side characters during it's run, as an example.
The criticisms of this movie is 100% valid (they did get lazy with writing), but I really do think everything simply comes down to popularity since popularity controls most of the business in Hollywood.
Will definitely admit; Leslie Nielsen could always entertain me just due to sheer pleasant memories of watching his movies with my folks. RIP Leslie Nielsen.
