I got to meet Conan one time in an airport. I didn’t want to take up his time so I was very quick with my interaction but he stopped me as I was leaving and asked me if I wanted a picture. I also called him Mr. O’Brien and he said “Please. Please. You can call me Sir.” He’s a hilarious and genuine man from what I can tell.

I went to a Conan taping in 2004 and we waited after the show to try and get a photo with him, he was so kind and funny in person, we asked “can we get a photo?”, he said “yeah hurry up I got a date with Paris Hilton tonight”
We said “wow really?” He said “no I’m going home alone” and then the cleaning lady came by and he was making wisecracks with her, truly a wonderful moment meeting him…

An important part of Conan's hosting style is that he had always played the role of a jester, in comparison to other hosts (Jimmy Kimmel, Ellen, Larry King, Oprah etc) who want to look "good".
Viewers naturally feel closer to hosts that play a fool of themselves, and Conan got away with many rude antics (which has huge comedic effects), because we as viewers, have established the impression that Conan meant no harm.

I’ve met Conan multiple times, all of them on accident. Twice at an airport, once on the street of NY and a different time when he came into a place I worked at. After the first two times he actually remembered my name. When I saw him the last time at the place that I worked I joked, “it’s like the universe is saying something to us” and he said “Yeah it’s saying ‘stop stalking me’” hes such a genuine person and makes such quick remarks. He is from Harvard he knows how to make a deal. If there is one thing we learn at Harvard, it is how to make deals with others. My wife is from the Japanese Equivalent of Harvard, when the landlord of the shitty flat we were living in (and i mean really shitty with roaches and the laundry machine outside the flat), decided to sell the place to a developer, she made a deal with the landlord and made them pay for the entire moving, for the relocation for the first 6 months rent of our next place (and boy the next was pure luxury) and she made them pay her 150 000 dollars (in yen) or we were going nowhere or dragging them to court and asking for 10 times that amount. The landlord couldn't believe how good she was, and that someone so educated would rent such a crap apartment. He thought he was just leasing to broke uneducated people. We had just rented the place because we had just moved back to Japan and hadn't gotten jobs yet and needed the cheapest place to live that we could afford as students.
Never underestimate the power of education. When you know all the laws and rights and tricks and all the loopholes you are the most powerful person in the game.

Several parts of the video seemed to frame or demonise people and their beliefs in a way that just assumed you shared the creator's prejudices about the world, but those prejudices seem to stem from hanging around a bit too much with narrow minded folk & media online and not actively being challenged by others. My youth pastor used to tell the story all the time, he was in New York and randomly saw Conan O'Brien walking down the street, surrounded by a giant circle of fans wanting his autograph. Keep patiently waiting and asked if he could please have his autograph, he said sure thing, signed it for him, and my youth pastor said thank you so much. Conan stopped dead in his tracks, looked him right in the eyes and said " you're the first person to thank me today" and gave him a very genuine hug.
He said that such a small gesture of kindness can go a long way, that although he's a celebrity he is also a very genuine human being just like everyone else, which leads me to believe every positive story I have ever heard in my life about Conan O'Brien.

Conan, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, and John Oliver are all acknowledged as having supremely good relationships with their writers and production staff, and are considered pillars of the late night entertainment industry. All of them have during various strikes, gone out of their way to guarantee their staff were paid properly, either out of their own pockets or by doing extra work to earn the cash they need. Colbert makes a point of having his staff make appearances on the program (as does Conan and Seth Meyers), with Colbert offering congratulations to the various staff members on air whenever someone gets engaged, married, or has a child. Colbert also early on recognized the genius of Jon Baptiste, and the world owes a collective thanks to him for giving him a huge break, doing the same thing for his crew that Jon Stewart did to his peers when he was the full time host of The Daily Show. To me it is also telling that whenever former Conan staff have gone onto other things, they end up working with Colbert. There is NOTHING fake about Colbert, and he (not CBS) is the executive of his show. Whereas his character on The Colbert Report was a character he was playing, and as such could get away with being more irreverent, rude, and would pursue a narrative story of the wider program. And your wise crack about the dome at the Ed Sullivan Theatre? IT'S A PROJECTION. IT CHANGES EACH NIGHT.

However, there's a kernel of truth in the disgust toward the performative virtue that characterizes media, whether liberal or conservative. Corden and DeGeneres are clear examples that even progressive individuals should clock as duplicitous and self-serving.
Terminal centrism, perhaps. The frustrating part of any political discourse is happening upon someone who is only partially wrong.

I mean that's usually the main point of most of his content, and I'm not a big fan of most of it for that reason, even if I agree with a bit of it. However, in this case he's calling attention to the very real problem of entertainers overestimating their importance and conflating the job's goal of ENTERTAINING PEOPLE with preaching. There's nothing wrong with using your platform to comment on things and get people thinking critically about them (something that comedians like Carlin and Chappelle excelled at), but there is a stark difference between bringing something to people's attention and telling them what to think. It's important to Conan's success because he never fell for that trap and is always first and foremost an entertainer

This haunted Leno too, but Fallon's contract is far more soul-crushing than Leno's ever was. I'm glad Jay got out of it before it destroyed his soul; but Fallon is fully steeped and forever pigeonholed in a way that I don't see much hope for his future in high profile entertainment once he leaves NBC.

The dig at Craig Ferguson is pretty ridiculous as the criticism of this vid is on authenticity. Craig Ferguson was the definition of authentic to the point of deconstructing the whole late night genre. I never found Ferguson to be "in love with his own voice". The fact he walked away without drama while at the top of his game is proof of that. Always found the late late show with Ferguson more interesting and intellectually engaging than Connan. I always drift to clips of Ferguson's interviews years after he's off air. I only come across Connan to rewatch the Norm MacDonald bits.

Quick story RE Corden. A friend worked backstage at ITV (a UK TV channel). She was one of the people that welcomed the guests and made sure they were prepped with hair and makeup, knew the running order etc (production assistant?). He turned up late and was offish and very blunt with everyone, which wasn’t unheard of for celebrities. What was appalling however, was when this woman was speaking to him and running through the plan, he interjected, interrupting her mid-flow to say “did we have sex the other day?”. She was completely taken aback and didn’t respond. Not backing off, he continued looking at her and said “I’m trying to remember where I know you from”, as if asking a complete stranger if they had sex was a normal introduction or in any way a normal way to speak. He was quickly whisked away and when she told people about it more came out about his horrendous behaviour towards women. He is an absolutely disgusting human being and shouldn’t be anywhere near tv.

I feel that this evaluation requires a contrast to John Stewart. John is highly respected and maintains a large fan base. He's as authentic as Conan, but he's able to do the political humor. I feel the reason he can do so is that he approaches his politics from a place that resonates with the majority of Americans - with a disdain of both parties while promoting politics which actually help people. Most people aren't believers in either party, so going full hog for liberalism does make many of the others look like partisan hacks.
This said - defending Lewis CK in this video is weak.

Honestly, kinda regretting watching this video now because it fed the algorithm for him. He's dumping a lot of stuff in here that makes it pretty clear he's trying to play both sides, rather than actually be neutral and present the facts.

A lot of his writers have been with him for years, indicating he’s probably a good boss. He also takes time to make sure viewers know who the writers are, whether it be giving them screen time for sketches or poking fun at them with his “Surprise Inspection” bits
He’s also good about not talking over guests and just going with the flow when they start telling stories, rather than trying to adhere to the question cards

This video really understated just how dirty Jay Leno and NBC did Coco. The whole thing where they put Leno on a new show 30 mins before The Tonight Show with Conan just really cut him off at the knees and Jay was caught sneaking around going to press events for Conan's run casting doubt on the new show and saying they should ask for Jay back. I understand Jay not wanting to go, but you cannot make an agreement like that and agree to the changeover and then welch on the agreement at the end of it. It is a special kind of revolting.

17:19 "His laughter now feeling so forced..."
I've been saying this for years. And people want to instead choose to not fall into what I was seeing. Not for fear of whether I was right or not. But that it would delude their view and vision of Fallon.
Jimmy Fallon is the definitive CLOWN of late night gigs. Everything he does is to make fun and to poke at people. He doesn't have it in him or his writing planning to properly honor and praise people legitimately. It always has to have some sort of "comedic" twist.
Like congratulating someone for their milestone birthday (20, 30, 40, 50 years old, etc). Sure, looks earnest and even thoughtful. Oh but wait! "In celebration of your phenomenal birthday, we got you a little something," and has a crew member or two wheel out some gag for the guest to get ambushed by so everyone can laugh about it.
Jimmy Fallon couldn't respect people because he chooses not to. His whole career is built around not respecting people.
