I had this happen tonight. The hot water didn't want to shut off. Tomorrow I head to the plumbing store. These how to videos are very important to us first time home owners. Keep them coming. Thank you.
Thank you SO MUCH! We've been renting a house the past 5 years. Once a year, our tub faucet starts dripping, and within 2 weeks it is a bad stream. You wouldn't believe how much water comes out. We'd let our landlord know, and she'd send out her preferred plumbing company. The first year, they told us it was because we were squeezing too tight on the faucet. I said "Oh okay, we won't do that anymore." The second year they came out, they said the same thing. And kind of treated me like I was dumb for letting it happen again. They showed me the washer, how worn out it had been. I was surprised because, even though this is my kids' bathroom so I don't always know how tight it's being turned, it didn't really make sense that in one year it got worn out. The third year, they really started talking down to me. I live in a lower income neighborhood, so I'm not sure if they think people in my neighborhood are stupid or what, but he spoke to me like I was unable to comprehend what he was saying. I promised we'd only turn the knob lightly. The fourth year, oh boy. He probably repeated the same thing to me about the faucet one dozen times, in the most condescending tone I've EVER been spoken to in my life. I've never been made to feel so small or stupid by anyone. He insisted that we were squeezing the faucet so tightly, that it was all our fault, that we didn't even try to be gentle, etc. I promised myself and my kids I would never let these plumbers in my house again, they tried to make us feel so small. So last week when our faucet started leaking, I knew I needed to do something different. Your video saved the day!! Not only teaching us how to replace the washer, but showing us how if the seat is damaged you will have to keep replacing the washer. Guess what that plumber NEVER replaced? A damaged seat. It was his fault our washer kept wearing out. I knew it made no sense why every year, like clockwork, we had this issue. It all makes sense now. THANK YOU!!!!!!
DIY University That Fix It Guy hi. A plumber installed a brand new tub faucet yesterday. Now there is an issue. When running the diverter, only water comes out of the diverter with good pressure. The problem is when running the shower, the diverter still running. Both at good pressure. When everything is turned off, there are no leaks. I noticed this after the plumber installed and I asked the plumber why the diverter would still run, when shower is still running. The plumber said that is what the new faucets do now. That seems like a huge waste of water when showering. Is what he’s saying true or did he install something wrong? If he installed wrong, what is the fix?

Why would people give this video a thumbs down? My guess is its angry plumbers butt hurt because this gentleman made a great video to save homeowners money. Well done and thank-you.
Thank you for the video! I tried this once before, but the other persons video did not mention the seat. Therefore, my faucet leaked again. You saved me $250 for the quote the plumber gave me. The washers cost me $.79. The seat $2.99 for two. And the seat wrench was $14.99. All purchased at lowe's. Thanks you again. I will subscribe!
Thanks for the video. Years of a small leak turning into a stream leak. The plumber came out to fix the elements on my hot water heater ($250 for labor). He noticed the streaming leak and said for another $250 he would return and fix the steam plus I'd need to buy a new bathtub faucet system or he'd buy and install. That's when I said to myself a few choice words that weren't French. On the night b4 my day off, I searched TH-cam for ways to fix a leaking bathroom tub system. There you were, so thanks. Now I've got to find out about septic systems. Thank you again for the ease and explanation of the video.
Estimate to fix this problem is $200-300. Thank you for the refresher. My Father showed me this years ago, but I needed to see this to remember before I tackled the job. About to save money in a variety of ways! No plumber saves $300. No need for a new water heater YET. Saves $1100. No more water damage. Water bill saved. Winning all around! Thanks
I appreciate your video, not only showing the problem but explaining the ins & outs of how the shut off works! Out of the many tutorials watched your the only one that explains the how & why’s!
What a gem you are for sharing this tutorial. I've been waiting 4 months for my landlord to come fix my leaky faucet, but looks like I can give it a try myself now. Thank you!!
I'm so grateful for this video! Yesterday, 4/21/18, I replaced the hot, cold and shower taps. It took me just over an hour because I had to replace the seats as well and the lime built-up, REALLY gave me a hard time getting the handles off. I got a kit that had the spindle and washers already in place. I am so proud of myself. Thank you for showing how to do it. I'm ever grateful. 🤗
I’m a widowed mom of two young kids. We own our home and don’t really have great insurance nor do we have the extra money to hire a plumber when times call for it. We have had a constant heavy leak in one of our bath tubs w the hot water and it constantly ran, it wasn’t a simple drip, it was a steady stream, it’s been going on for a few years now and I’ve just eaten the added expense, my water bill is always outrageous but the streaming hot water made it worse. I got up the other morning and the stream worsened to the point of needing fixed otherwise there’s no telling how high my water bill would have went up. So I got on here and started looking for videos w similar faucets to mine, I landed on ur video. I had to drain my hot water heater because the plumbers that installed it put the shut off on the wrong pipe, but once I was able to get that done, I was able to use ur very helpful video and get my faucet apart, went t Walmart got a multipack of plumbing washers, ect. found one that fit and put it all back together and now no more unwanted running/leaking water! I can’t tell u how much being able to use this video meant, I can’t afford a plumber, don’t have my husband to help, my dad is disabled and can’t help, so I was on my own and w/ out this video and the Good Lord’s help I would NOT have been able to get it fixed!! THANK YOU for taking the time and for the helpful info!!
God always helps the helpless, Jesus is soooo good. Make sure you turn from all sin to be sure you will enjoy His goodness for all of eternity and not His wrath. God bless you lady, I feel for you !
One of the best videos on how to do this! Thank you! I replaced my valves and seats this morning ... about 45 minutes and I was done. Total cost ... $52 and no problems and no leaks. I was very happy! (I just used a dab of plumbers grease around the new seats to aid installation). Honestly, just for peace of mind, for about $12 for the removal tool and two new seats, it makes sense just to replace the seats while you have those valves out. Also, you may pay a little more, but going to a faucet supply store is well worth it ... you take in the old parts and the guys are very knowledgeable in making sure you have the right replacements. Advice at Home Depot, etc. can be hit or miss, depending on who you ask.
This video just saved me 100's of dollars! I just replaced the entire faucet system for around $60. Every seat was stripped, so the extra advice helped tremendously!
We just fixed our leak with this video. I can't tell you how proud I am, cuz I have a stubborn hubby, but I recommended the washers. The only hard part was the water line outside. But NO DRIPS! I'M AMAZED that this worked. Thank you and God Bless you for helping us not pay a plumber for something we could do. We do not live in luxury so YES!
I live in a rental apartment with my girlfriend and we had this issue pop up. I told my landlord I would be happy to do what I could to solve the issue so he could save some money. This video was tremendously helpful! I liked that you included the bit about the seat potentially damaging the washer and how to handle that issue. Didn’t run into that problem but if I ever do, now I know what to do. Thanks for posting!
let me give you 10 stars on this video!!! this is probably the best video on youtube when it comes to explaining a repair! you had the close ups real good! you explained every step very clear you didn't talk garbage or nonsense while explaining the repair you didn't try to show off anything you had the right lighting I've seen many many clips on yt and i wish all videos were like this one! it is well worth the time I'm taking to write this comment, you very well deserve it! thank you for this video, I hope youtube recognize your work! thanks!
Thank you do much for posting... This happened to me 2 days ago... I found your video on TH-cam and followed your directions, which BTW, where very precise!!! This LITERALLY saved me $190 plumbing fee... It cost me $19.71 in supplies, which includes the tool to remove and replace the seat!!! I am forever grateful!!
First time homeowner here. I've been stressing over all the little stuff to repair and didn't want to pay a plumber to fix something so small. This video is exactly what I had hoped to find and it's even easier to fix than I expected!! Going out to get some washers and an adjustable wrench now. I only wish I knew where my shut off valve was! :)
Thank you so much for explaining the seat and how it interacts with the washer. It's the little details like that that make this such a great tutorial.
Straight to the point and so helpful. I replaced my “washer” and then a week later it was leaking again so I then replaced the “seat” and it hasn’t leaked since THANK YOU I did not wanna have to pay a plumber
Yes yes yes! Thank you so muchhhh! Helping single woman all over the country one video at a time haha ! So much more helpful then asking a worker at Home Depot … they looked at me like I was crazy and should just call a plumber…. They didn’t even know if I should turn my water main line off or not… ugh ! Again thank you so much I feel super accomplished and self sufficient haha
Came in EXTREME handy once again. I did this I think a few years ago with a stubborn leak...fixed it, saved the video. Late last night, I turned the hot water shower faucet off, but water continued to pour out. Came back to this video just to refresh myself with the fix. Yep..washer was shredded, just hanging by a tiny piece. No emergency trip to Lowes, had the washers from last time. Problem solved! Thanks again!
perfect video. I am decent handyman and just following along with the step by step instructions I was able to fix my hot water leak in just 15 minutes in the middle of the night. Luckily we had a pack of rubber washers in the house and they had the right size. Thank you for this life saver please continue your amazing work and God bless.
Thank you! For the 1st time in my life I did plumbing work on a rental home I own. The plumber wanted $100 just to come over, and $50 per hour plus parts..lmfao! Thanks again, I subscribed 😊
Excellent Video! I'm a HandyMan 26yrs now and I generally just cut out the tile and wall and replace the whole fixture, then replace it with a trim plate or a whole new tiled shower. But in today's case that is not in the budget so I will be changing the seat on a 46yr old 3 knob shower fixture.
Haven't replaced a washer in years, and knew I'd better get on TH-cam and do my research, this is a great step by step program, in fact, I never replaced a seat, just learned something else new, thank you for your video!!
Loved this video! Shared it with my landlord. Apparently, this the third time they come to fix the leaking faucet. They keep telling us don’t tighten the knob too much and wait till water drains from the line; 🤔 which it doesn’t. So came across your video, very insightful by the way, and had the ah ha moment! Told my landlord about it and hopefully she asks her plumber if he has replaced the seat. That should take care of that for good!
I (a female with no experience ) was able to fix my leaky bathtub with this video. When I went to the plumbing store the guy was actually impressed that I knew what I was talking about. THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you for taking the time to show us all how to do this. I always prefer to fix things myself if I can. It helps when someone is kind enough to show me how:)
Thank you for showing the ring inside..I already know how to replace the faucet, but did not know the ring can be replaced too..that was the cause of the leak, it cracked. So I went to HomeDepot and got the seat wrench. Dam it cost 16.77..So the leak problem was fixed..Thank a million.
2019 and your video is still tops. I saved myself a lot of money. Did not call a plumber. I picked up my woman’s gloves and went to work and got the job done in a matter of moments. It took more time to get to the store to buy my parts. It took about ten minutes and the job was over. Thanks for the video.
Such a great video! Clear, detailed and easy to follow! My hot water was leaking and was able to fix it with the help of your video. It’s always good when you can fix things yourself and walk away feeling proud! Thank you so much!!
Used this video today to repair a leaky bathtub faucet. All your directions were perfectly done. Replaced both seats and washers, and everything works perfectly and the leaks are gone. Thank you immensely for doing such a good job with this DIY video. It was exactly what I needed. Liked and a new sub for you. 😁😁
I don’t know if you even check this but I just wanted to thank you for this video! It’s great to see someone sharing their knowledge and helping people out by teaching them how to fix stuff themselves and save them money. Thanks!
Another person here absolutely grateful for this video. I watched the video closely today and fixed the hot water leak 🚰. The leak is gone! Thank you 🙏 so much for making this video to help the people. Your video saved me hundreds of dollars that a plumber 🧑🔧 would have surely charged me. God bless you.
Watch this video every few years to remind me of how to do this. Thank a for posting this. 6 kids and one bath/shower. I appreciate good plumbing TH-cam videos! The last time the seat was damaged and I ended up calling the plumber because I couldn’t find one at menards. If I would of went to a plumbing supply store, which now I know where the closest one is after the plumber let me know, I would of saved a couple hundred bucks.
Good video. I'd do them both at the same time anyway since the other washer is likely not far behind it in being worn out. Might as well while you have the tools out if it were me. Nice bonus about the seat, too. That can be easily overlooked - good and thorough job.
Also most people buy a pack of 2 washers, so might as well use the 2nd washer instead of leaving it around -- like we'll remember where it is anyway when we need it, right?
At my house the water has to be turned off to do this, so I do them both. Except for a couple of times I fixed it by flipping the washer over so I wouldn't have to go to the store. Now I have a box of 20.
Outstanding! My tub's hot water faucet wears through washers at least once per year. I believe it needs a new seat. So, as I am replacing the mechanism this time, i will change the seat. Thanks for the info! Saved $$ and time. Why does this always happen on the weekend before a major holiday?? OY!
Thanks very much! We have this exact same setup/leak in a duplex we own. Just had a plumber come out and quote us almost $900 to replace the whole fixture in lieu of fixing it. Looks like I'm headed there later to replace a washer! Thank you so much for the excellent video!
Thank you Thank you Thank you My hubby always did all the plumbing and I was the one that would turn in turn off the main water line outside. Well he suddenly passed away Feb 10,2022 and the bathtub started leaking. The panic I had was ridiculous sad, I was always looking at everything he did but he didn't explain. So here I was with the heaviest pressure, what if I cause a flooding, what if I break something and I don't know what it is. This video was it, clear all the way through and I appreciate the basic terms used. 👍 👍 👍 highly appreciated!!
F*ing AWESOME!!!!! So I just bought a house, and it has it when you turn the shower head on, the weather still comes out from the bottom. Know seeing this, helps so much more to fix it!!! I'll give you a update of how it went. But man, I subscribed as soon after the video finished. Thanks for the video!!!!!
Thank you! You saved me $50. Had my plumber fix my Leakey faucet, a few weeks later it starts leaking again. Instead of having him fix it again, I decided to TH-cam how to fix it. Stumbled across you’re video. And the rest was history. In 10min I fixed the problem, using pliers, screw driver and a little bit of elbow grease lol.
I never normally comment, but this was the BEST tutorial. We had been without any running water because our shower would not turn off! No matter how hard we turned the knob. Replaced both the cold/hot tap using this tutorial and we have running water again! Longest part of the whole ordeal was searching in Lowe's for parts and thankfully they carry most of these parts as a kit. THANK YOU!!!
Great videio. I really love how you took the extra time to explain how the seat and washer work together when functional and what to watch for (seat wear) before just assuming you need to only replace the rubber washer. Now I head out to put this knowledge to use!!! Thanks again!
Thank you for the time and effort you put into this video so that we may become as self-sufficient as possible! After taking my faucet handle off, I cannot remove the sleeve as it just keeps spinning, and I cannot pull the system out of it. Suggestions please?
Thanks for your tutorial. I used it to fix our leaky bath faucet successfully. 1980s bath fitting, so was in dire need of changed washers. It was practically non-existent in the hot water faucet.
Thank you for the explaining this simply and showing the actual replacement of the worn part. I found the video very helpful. I also appreciated the fact that you noted I could just get the replacement washer rather than an entire kit. That saved me a ton of-money as well. I appreciate the time you took to share your knowledge.
I want to send you my sincere gratitude, sir. I managed to fix my leaky hot faucet with zero experience all because of you. You don’t know how accomplished I feel… :-)
I’m thankful for this video. I just fixed a leak for my mother. I just followed the simple instructions and now I’ve shocked the whole family. Great night, great video, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Very informative! This is an excellent, step by step video that covers the important parts very nicely. As an aside, I think it is HILARIOUS to read some of the comments below about people not shutting off their water and getting sprayed when you CLEARLY warned them in the video to shut off their water first. Believe me, it's not that you needed to emphasize it more, it's that those people need to learn how to pay attention to a "how to" instructional video! Perhaps an unexpected wet cell phone will teach the lesson! Ha! Thanks for the free and awesome information! Saved me a $80 plumbing bill!
I agree with all, MrLund. Regarding not turning the water off, I watched another video for bathroom sink faucets ("for dummies") that actually videoed him turning off the water. That one is for people who don't listen and need total visual instruction! As a note - my valves were stuck in the open position. Even after taking off the handles and using pliers, I could not get one to turn off for fear of actually breaking it. I HAD to turn of the main water supply to my house. Luckily it was in a convenient location. (I ended up replace that valve, too, as well as the washer.) But beware: In some older homes, like my last, the main water shutoff doesn't work, either. In that case (as it appears in my current house), I would probably get a plumber to install a new one.
Thanks for All those important tips...we use to just buy the new stem and replace it...never looking at the washer... Extra cost.....now you have shown us about the seat...what a great video. Thank you
Thank you - my hot water started gushing out this morning and I had to shut off the house water. Watched your video and bought a 3 dollar package of washers. My diverter was more inset into the wall so I had to use a tool that was like a hexagon tube instead of an adjustable wrench. But this video SAVED me!
Nice video and shows how it goes when the stars align. Mine (Price Fisster), fought me tooth and nail even from the get go on popping out the H&C tabs. Only a razor knife would pop them free. The cover plate didn't have a set screw and wall glued to the wall with putty and needed to be unscrewed. Another 1/2 hour to get that off Forget the adjustable wrench as everything was buried deep back in the wall. I was guessing at sizes and buying double sockets getting the wrong ones and eventually buying a $20 set I returned later. Price F. requires a 27/32 and a 31/32. Getting the 27 off was O.K but the 31 I was using the rod they give you and then I had to add an extension to break it loose. The hole in the tile was so tight I had to hammer on the socket. Once out the worn seal that had a phillips screw holding it in place had a rounded out hole. No easy outs handy so had to buy the whole stem that came with a seat. Again, breaking the seat loose took a cheater pipe on top of the stem removal tool. Once you have it loose a flat head screwdriver gets it out faster and the best way to get the new one started. I think 5 trips to the store total. I was going to do the hot side too but fixing the cold side stopped the leak. Once I had the new stem in place and tight the socket was lodged in the tile and another 1/2hr to break that loose. Definitely a 3 beer job.
Thank you so much!! Explained very well in detail with no extra talking. Had this fixed many time for lots of $$$$. Guessing they only replaced the washer each time!!!! Now we can fix it ourselves the right way.
@Mic Micson There are always two cutoffs by code. The one for hot water is near the the water heater. The one for cold water is the whole house supply, near where the water line enters the house. If you are fortunate, there are cutoffs for each floor's lines in the basement.
I've been waiting for my sons to take care of this and I see that I will have to do it myself. Thanks for an easily understandable video. Tomorrow I'll be plumbing. LOL
Angela Magana my son actually came over to fix it before I had to do it. He watched the video and it was done so quickly that I could not imagine how a plumber could charge what they were going to charge me.
I am guessing it was around $150 and I think my son spent a few dollars on gaskets. I had gotten an estimate on several issues together so I don't know the exact amount. I paid for one fixed one myself from another video and my son took care of this one

Why would people give this video a thumbs down? My guess is its angry plumbers butt hurt because this gentleman made a great video to save homeowners money. Well done and thank-you.
I don't know who in the world could give "thumbs down" on this video. You were very concise, quick and informative. Thank you so much!!!!
Those are the losers that can “Do this better and easier.” Lol They’re on every channel.
cause people are thots
Well I wouldn't.. but maybe because in 99% of cases the hardest thing is getting the knob off, and his just slides right off!
He was using the adjustable wrench the wrong way lol. I liked the video.
@Deborah Spanier --- bad and unscrupulous Plumbers, who want to charge ppl $500
Thank you for the video!
I tried this once before, but the other persons video did not mention the seat. Therefore, my faucet leaked again. You saved me $250 for the quote the plumber gave me. The washers cost me $.79. The seat $2.99 for two. And the seat wrench was $14.99. All purchased at lowe's.
Thanks you again. I will subscribe!
You're welcome. Glad to help. Thanks for watching.

Thanks
Great step-by-step video to replace bathtub faucet washer and bonus training on replacing the seat and tool required if necessary.

So the first thing you should do is stuff a washrag in the drain hole, as you WILL drop stuff and guess where it goes?
Onto the washrag!!!!! DUH.
That little amount if water isn't a worry. Its the amount of time that its leaking then there's s problem
Thank you my man.
Then it will just go off the side of the tub, across the floor and into the cold air return grate. Murphy has laws, you know.
I use a 5 gallon bucket because mine would hide under the rag somehow and as I pull up the rag.. part says "see ya!!"

Older houses may not have individual shutoffs. Mine doesn't built 1954.

I know this is an old video but it was perfect for my needs today. Thank you.
perfect video. I am decent handyman and just following along with the step by step instructions I was able to fix my hot water leak in just 15 minutes in the middle of the night. Luckily we had a pack of rubber washers in the house and they had the right size. Thank you for this life saver please continue your amazing work and God bless.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I saved myself hundreds of dollars for a $20 fix.
Haven't replaced a washer in years, and knew I'd better get on TH-cam and do my research, this is

OY!

+A Jensen wow that's nice I like
+A Jensen .can we see more.
MrLundScience well I bet if you watch electrical repair videos you don't hear from those people after they fail to listen.

MAKE SURE THE WATER IS OFF BEFORE YOU DO THIS JOB!!
He said that!!
@Mic Micson There are always two cutoffs by code. The one for hot water is near the the water heater. The one for cold water is the whole house supply, near where the water line enters the house. If you are fortunate, there are cutoffs for each floor's lines in the basement.
😂
Thank you or this video. You make it look so easy I'm planning on doing this later on today.
I've been waiting for my sons to take care of this and I see that I will have to do it myself. Thanks for an easily understandable video. Tomorrow I'll be plumbing. LOL
Sharon J how did it go?
Angela Magana my son actually came over to fix it before I had to do it. He watched the video and it was done so quickly that I could not imagine how a plumber could charge what they were going to charge me.
Sharon J how much?
I am guessing it was around $150 and I think my son spent a few dollars on gaskets. I had gotten an estimate on several issues together so I don't know the exact amount. I paid for one fixed one myself from another video and my son took care of this one
I spend 13 dlls
