I just bought a kit at Home Depot that was $50. The kit has pretty much everything new. If I can get it to work and not leak I figure I'm probably going to save $300 or $400 because I didn't need a plumber.
Without a doubt this is one of the best "how to" videos on here! My father could build or repair most anything in his basement workshop but rarely imparted that knowledge to me. "It's easier if I do it myself Kev, you wouldn't understand." Well somewhere mid-life I finally got the self-confidence to try things. And guess what, Dad? I usually can do it - especially with a good teacher! Thank you so much for posting this and know that you just saved me several hundred dollars from what a plumber would have billed as a "major repair"!!!
Thank you! I replaced my stem valves and seats this morning ... about 45 minutes and I was done. Total cost ... $52 - no problems and no leaks. I was very happy! (I just used a dab of plumbers grease around the new seats to aid installation). Honestly, for peace of mind, for about $12 for the removal tool and two new seats, it makes sense just to replace the seats while you have those valves out. Also, you may pay a little more, but going to a faucet supply store can be well worth it ... you take in the old parts and the guys know exactly what you need. (Advice at Home Depot, etc. can be hit or miss, depending on who you ask). Just my observation ... be careful if using an Allen wrench to replace the seat. Unless the wrench is a very tight fit, you risk rounding out the hole in the seat. As the removal tool is tapered, you are assured of a very tight fit ... and some of those seats are in there quite tight.

You forgot a very important step. Step 1 put the drain plug in or put a towel over the drain! Losing a screw down the drain turns this into a nightmare.
Was able to do this myself except for a couple of stuck pieces that my husband helped. This saved us a lot of money that we did not have to spend on a plumber. Just a note, the replacement valves I purchased had the seal loose at the front screw and the packing nuts were also very loose causing leaking from the from of the valve. Once both were tightened no leaks. Thank you for the great instructions!
Fantastic video! I've always been capable with simple plumbing but never had to get into the shower valve assembly. Our house was built in the 60's and we've been here for about 20 years. Our hot water tap washer was constantly failing over the years. I never had time to do anything about it so my wife would call a plumber to change out the washer and problem temporarily solved. However, that simple repair was not cheap! I saw your video a couple of months ago and bought a Danco repair kit for Price Pfister. It included everything you would need to change everything out, even the cowbell. I bought a seat wrench for $6. I was going to wait to tackle the repair once the washer failed again because it was all working fine. Well, tonight it failed. I took a shower when I got home from work and the hot water wouldn't turn off! I turned off the water main, re-watched your video and went to work! Everything went smoothly except the diverter is pretty much fused and I can't get it off easily. As the hot and cold taps were my main concern, I cleaned up the old diverter knob and left it for now. I put everything together and turned the water back on. When I returned to the bathroom, all was quiet. all was dry! I turned on the faucets and they worked perfectly! I have no idea how long this kit will last or how strong it is as the knobs feel kinda light. Time will tell but for now, the taps are dry and the valves are tight! Thank you so much for your walkthrough. We had started to get used to cranking down the faucet in order for it to stop leaking. I would always need to change the gaskets every few weeks. I was almost going to have the whole faucet fixture replaced. Your video is the only one I've seen that mentions that the SEAT can be changed. I knew my seat was completely torn but I thought it was integral & part of the whole fixture. Now we barely have to turn it to close the water flow :D Also great that you mention that the valve should be fully in open position before screwing the vale in. Sir, you are worth your weight in gold.
I'm a woman in my 60s and I was able to do this. I was happy to learn about the shut-off screw under the tear-drop escutcheon plate because I live in a condo. But when I took it off I found that the shower installers had not cut the hole big enough to reach the screw. I needed to buy a small saw to cut the hole a bit bigger. I just went step by step and every thing worked out fine!

I've watched a variety of videos, and I must say that you are very impressive. You gave more information than any other that will help with avoiding going back and forth, trying to figure out what went wrong. One of the sadest parts of life is buying expensive bathroom fixtures and then finding out that you can't buy the stem valves anymore. I'm hoping that the repair kits that I ordered will alleviate having to buy a clawfoot tub faucet that holds a handheld shower arm. Have you ever had an issue with a lever handle turning 360 degrees that won't shut off the water? Currently am forced to shut off at the shut-off valve. I've been screwed over and over by Plumbers who should know better. Wish me luck. And thank you for taking the time to help those of us in need.

You're a life saver bro, I've changed the valves in my shower about once every 6 months for the past five years and couldn't figure out why they wouldn't last. THE SEATS WERE DEMOLISHED!!! I'm hoping that this time, since I changed the seats too, they'll last a lot longer. Plus, you saved me about $22.00 because I bought valve repair kits (which contained new seats) for $2.32 each rather than a new valve for $13.25 each. thank you for your help. i watched your video a few times and took notes. one piece of advise: when closing the internal water flow with the flat head screw driver be careful not to twist too hard or it can chip off the metal since metal rusts. i had to purchase several of the tools needed here: the cow bell (shower valve socket wrench) and a faucet seat wrench. anyway, so far, so good. thanks for helping out your fellow human beings. blessings.
Fantastic job. Best TH-cam video I've seen while researching any of my home repair projects in recent years. It is awesome when a specialist makes no assumptions and instead fully describes and demonstrates every step, including the reasoning and result. This 32 minute video was a pleasure to watch front to back, with many retreats to fully grasp. In contrast the 2 or 3 minute assumption videos are insulting and borderline worthless, especially when there is no audio.

Thanks for explaining that the knobs can get stuck. After trying penetrating oil, I resorted to grabbing the knobs with channel lock pliers, which finally did the trick.

Wow …. You did an excellent job on this instructional video. ….. I did this stuff many years ago, recently bought an outdated home, so it’s time to start over again. I felt a bit apprehensive, because it’s been so long. Now I’m ready to grab my tools and get back at it. THANKYOU
Nice job on the video. I would add that a small simple two jaw puller pulls those handles quickly and effortlessly. I would never spend fifteen minutes wiggling the stem. Simply back off the screw (a phillips works best in this case) and center the puller on the screw after you have turned it counter clockwise a couple of turns. I do use pipe dope on the cartridge bonnet just so they will be easy to get off the next time. While there checking and new seals on the diverter is a good practice. The friction on the stem seal is determined by how much the nut has been tightened so while it is likely that you will see no leaks the stem can still be very loose if the packing is not tightened sufficiently. The handles feel wobbly in that case.
Thanks for the tip, Doug not only on using a two jaw puller, but how to use it in this instance. No luck at all wiggling the trim off. Danny the plumber did an amazing job with this video and your tip will help me to finish it off. 🥳
Excellent video. Yes on handle puller. I also add some dope or some clear silicone on the stem broach. And if I’m out of handles and it’s worn, a small dab of Oatey epoxy putty strategically put to not get into the screw threads can really do wonders to tighten up the handle to the stem.
Thank you so much! I was about to fix my shower/tub (same brand) as it was dripping, and thanks to this video I had the confidence to do it myself! I'm very hands-on but since this is a rental I was fearing breaking something but again, this video helped a lot (also using the right tools). At the end of the day, buying the tools I needed was always cheaper than calling a plumber! I might add also that if it wasn't for this video I didn't knew about the small valve seat (wasn't planning to replacing after noticing that the washers were worn out and that might fix it) but it came out when I unscrew the stem and fell down the wall (ugh!), one more trip to the hardware store and done! Thanks again.

Thank you for this video. I changed all three on my bathtub / shower. One thing I noticed, The hot and cold turn off in different directions. The Phister directions said both counter clockwise. make sure you have them fully closed before removing them. My diverter was hard to get out. I unscrewed it, then had to put the handle on it to rotate it to get it out. I really appreciate you posting this.

I’ve done hundreds of these and thought I was going to pick you apart, but nice job. Even mentioning the L on the 3/8 and covering packing. Thought you might not mention looking for leaks at cap thread gasket, but you covered. I’ve never put any dope on seats, but maybe I’ll start using a smoother out of the tube one. You love your crescent a little more than me. Too much slipping on the chrome dumbbells. I love the screwdriver through the hole. Good to mention servicing it is almost as good as new, especially when you grease. I’d say I service 95% as opposed to replacing. Now be honest, after this vid you removed that new hot stem and just serviced it. Sending this to my nephew who I promised I’d find him a vid instead of texting or talking him through it. I love the realness of your f#*k which I think was aimed at putting the stem through the body the wrong way lmao. Was that a shower arm instead of a spout below the diverter? Thanks for the thoroughness.
I should’ve watched this video before I started talking everything apart. I went to Lowe’s had to buy everything (brand name)separate $147 including the trim pieces and handles Just for the heck of it I went by Home Depot. They have a complete kit (aftermarket) with everything including the tool to remove the valves for $57 and you don’t have to spend half an hour looking for all the different parts. They also had valve rebuild kits for $7 apiece. I ended up just keeping the brand-name parts. Worked well after watching the video.

thank you for your help. i watched your video a few times and took notes. one piece of advise: when closing the internal water flow with the flat head screw driver be careful not to twist too hard or it can chip off the metal since metal rusts. i had to purchase several of the tools needed here: the cow bell (shower valve socket wrench) and a faucet seat wrench. anyway, so far, so good. thanks for helping out your fellow human beings. blessings.
Fantastic job. Best TH-cam video I've seen while researching any of my home repair projects in recent years. It is awesome when a specialist makes no assumptions and instead fully describes and demonstrates every step, including the reasoning and result. This 32 minute video was a pleasure to watch front to back, with many retreats to fully grasp. In contrast the 2 or 3 minute assumption videos are insulting and borderline worthless, especially when there is no audio.

Thanks for explaining that the knobs can get stuck. After trying penetrating oil, I resorted to grabbing the knobs with channel lock pliers, which finally did the trick.
My shower was not leaking at all, I replaced washers and screws just to prove myself I learned something from this video 😃

I did this stuff many years ago, recently bought an outdated home, so it’s time to start over again. I felt a bit apprehensive, because it’s been so long.

Nice job on the video. I would add that a small simple two jaw puller pulls those handles quickly and effortlessly. I would never spend fifteen minutes wiggling the stem. Simply back off the screw (a phillips works best in this case) and center the puller on the screw after you have turned it counter clockwise a couple of turns. I do use pipe dope on the cartridge bonnet just so they will be easy to get off the next time. While there checking and new seals on the diverter is a good practice. The friction on the stem seal is determined by how much the nut has been tightened so while it is likely that you will see no leaks the stem can still be very loose if the packing is not tightened sufficiently. The handles feel wobbly in that case.

Excellent video. Yes on handle puller. I also add some dope or some clear silicone on the stem broach. And if I’m out of handles and it’s worn, a small dab of Oatey epoxy putty strategically put to not get into the screw threads can really do wonders to tighten up the handle to the stem.

Thank you so much! I was about to fix my shower/tub (same brand) as it was dripping, and thanks to this video I had the confidence to do it myself! I'm very hands-on but since this is a rental I was fearing breaking something but again, this video helped a lot (also using the right tools). At the end of the day, buying the tools I needed was always cheaper than calling a plumber! I might add also that if it wasn't for this video I didn't knew about the small valve seat (wasn't planning to replacing after noticing that the washers were worn out and that might fix it) but it came out when I unscrew the stem and fell down the wall (ugh!), one more trip to the hardware store and done! Thanks again.

Thank you for this video. I changed all three on my bathtub / shower. One thing I noticed, The hot and cold turn off in different directions. The Phister directions said both counter clockwise. make sure you have them fully closed before removing them. My diverter was hard to get out. I unscrewed it, then had to put the handle on it to rotate it to get it out. I really appreciate you posting this.

I’ve done hundreds of these and thought I was going to pick you apart, but nice job. Even mentioning the L on the 3/8 and covering packing. Thought you might not mention looking for leaks at cap thread gasket, but you covered. I’ve never put any dope on seats, but maybe I’ll start using a smoother out of the tube one. You love your crescent a little more than me. Too much slipping on the chrome dumbbells. I love the screwdriver through the hole. Good to mention servicing it is almost as good as new, especially when you grease. I’d say I service 95% as opposed to replacing. Now be honest, after this vid you removed that new hot stem and just serviced it. Sending this to my nephew who I promised I’d find him a vid instead of texting or talking him through it. I love the realness of your f#*k which I think was aimed at putting the stem through the body the wrong way lmao. Was that a shower arm instead of a spout below the diverter? Thanks for the thoroughness.

I should’ve watched this video before I started talking everything apart.
I went to Lowe’s had to buy everything (brand name)separate $147 including the trim pieces and handles
Just for the heck of it I went by Home Depot. They have a complete kit (aftermarket) with everything including the tool to remove the valves for $57 and you don’t have to spend half an hour looking for all the different parts.
They also had valve rebuild kits for $7 apiece.
I ended up just keeping the brand-name parts.
Worked well after watching the video.
I'm just tearing it all out and redoing the entire plumbing, this is soooooooo many steps
