Seated Exercise: Gentle Upper Body Exercises and Stretches

  • Recreation therapist Liza Franses leads a gentle upper body routine designed. This video is ideal for helping older adults maintain range of motion and may also help with alleviating pain associated with non-use of certain muscle groups.
    WARNING: Please be sure to consult a doctor before using this program or pursuing any form of exercise.
    CAREGIVERS: Do not use with an older adult unless you have consulted with that person's doctor regarding exercise regimes.
    GOALS: To maintain range of motion
    To enhance well-being through exercise
    To facilitate a sense of achievement at the end of the program
    To enhance physical and mental well-being through deep breathing and stretching
    To help alleviate pain associated with non-use of certain muscle groups

    My 91 year old mother-in-law and I are loving your chair exercise videos, especially now when people are being confined in their rooms in assisted living facilities due to the coronavirus . Thank you so much!

    10:08 deep breaths followed by five more deep breaths

    July 2021…I am so out of shape and really needed a very gentle exercise that I can do in my recliner. I have hurt my ribs two times in the past 4 months just from stretching sideways over my head sideways. Most videos are for people who are much more mobile than I am. I give myself a Pat on the back when I don’t have to use my walker and walk all alone…not even a cane. I was congratulating myself because I took a shower without a shower chair today. I was so discouraged trying to find some exercises that were so very gentle that would not hurt me. Then, I found your video! Thank you for understanding we aren’t all Yoga Masters and skinny. 😅

    as per Doctor's visit this week to improve balance but standing exercises are not an option. Do you have a Seniors Chair Balance Exercise Routine that would work for Mom, 90 years old, now living at home for Covid Safety. Thank you, Camilla
