I still have a similar problem with my car, and every mechanic I went to didn't point anything out...The car starts to make a very low and deep rumble sound when going over 75-80 kmph (50 mph I think) and we suspected that could be the front bearings. The seller of the car mentioned it's from the tires but of course it was a lie :)) the sound was still there even after changing to winter tires. I'll totally look into replacing the bearings as well.

When a wheel bearing is making a noise I take it on the highway, turn the steering wheel slightly left then right. If the hum is louder when turning right or left. It's usually the opposite side. If you turn slightly left & it gets quieter it's usually the right wheel bearing & vice versa.

The Bolt foil solution as as bad as the Ford "piece of sheet metal wrapped around the front strut coil spring" solution. The springs had internal corrosion and would suddenly break, slicing into the tire. A friend's Taurus had this happen when his wife was backing the car out of the garage, luckily she wasn't at speed on the highway.

You should have a professional body person look at it because it sounds like it's been wrecked and repaired. But they didn't do the job properly and so the wheels and tires may not be running true across the patch wheel and axle alignment with the body of the vehicle and the front

I've has a couple that drove to the shop on fire. Then you need more than a bearing. In the old days there were very few bearing failures as the timken bearings were spaced a few inches apart, and they could be re-greased. Today there are 2 rows of ball bearings close together, way more pressure on close bearings than spaced bearings when you are cornering.

if the roads are bad like they are in parts of CT in the northeast, wheel bearings go at all times on every make and brand. My Toyota and Honda they failed at 140,000 miles. On my Subaru, two of them went at 130,000. Unfortunately, the more potholes you fail to miss or more bumpy roads you have to drive on that need replacement, wheel bearings fail all that more often. It is just something you have to live with no matter what brand car you own.

If it's an automatic it wouldn't matter because the fluid mechanical clutch limits the force that can be allowed through the drivetrain. Scotty speaks the truth about how difficult it is to ID where a noise is coming from. Took my Acura Integra in for service years ago and told the mechanic the left front wheel bearing was making a racket and prolly needed to be replaced. When I picked it up, he had replaced the worn, noisy *RIGHT* front wheel bearing.😊

My mechanic broke a lug nut off and my wheel would work loose causing it to shake but it made the wheel bearing go out but the car has 240k miles in it so it was due anyways. I just put axles in it. I drive it a lot so I don’t care to work on it parts are super cheap like cheaper then 90% of the cars out there! Both front axles put on was $175 $100 for axles $75 for labor. I did the whole ignition system with iradium plugs and good wires, coils, and a wiring harness all for $75 bucks! That’s why I will never let it go either!

The problem with jacking the car up and spinning the wheel is that the weight of the wheel is carried by the top half of the fixed bearing inner race which may still be in good condition. The damage if any will first appear on the permanently loaded lower half of this bearing and will not be detected by this method but only much later when the whole bearing is damaged. So this method is not good for picking up the problem in it's early stages but only much later. It's still OK if you realise this and treat the sound/vibration as an urgent signal to replace the bearing immediately. (from a professional vibration analyst/engineer who spent much of his life making damage assessments on all sorts of rotating industrial equipment).

I like how Scotty actually goes through and sorts out the source of the noise. My mechanics OTOH say, "doesn't sound serious. Keep driving it and see what happens." 😤
