    Is your car or truck making a howling noise while driving? In this video, Sue shows you how to diagnose a wheel hub or bearing! That howling or grinding noise you can hear while your car or truck is rolling is a worn out or damaged wheel bearing. Your first symptom of a bad wheel bearing will be the noise. Eventually, there might also be a wobble, which will come with vibration and excessive tire wear. With either of these symptoms, you'll definitely need to replace the bearing! Check out this video to learn all about wheel bearings!

      Sometimes they can give a wobble noise before the howl. Mine came on after getting all new tires. The heavier new tires were the straw that broke the camel's back and immediately brought on the noise. Naturally since it cane on with new rubber, I was convinced it was from a defective tire and so was my mechanic because we couldn't get any noise or movement on the lift, but it was very loud while driving We rebalanced and rotated the tires. The noise was still coming from the same spot. So I gambled and chaned the bearing. Problem solved. And even though it did not make noise while spinning the wheel on the lift, when we got it out, and spun it on the workbench we heard the grinding. Go figure?

    I love your videos. I had my CV axles replaced and afterward, I did hear howling noise at high speed, also at 40mph there is sound like a distant helicopter. I believe they probably over torqued the CV Axle nut. I noticed less MPG and the car at hwy speed did not coast like it used to, it slowed quickly when off the gas. So I think my wheel hub/bearing is damaged. Over time it does seem to have improved but not normal. Is it worth loosening and re-torqueing the nut or is the damage done.

  • @ronkorsch1464

    Was starting to hear the "howling" from the front of the truck. Got home and measured the rotor temperatures as close to the axle as practical. Truck was just parked with wheels on the ground. Using a hand held infrared thermometer, driver's side was 90F, passenger side 140F. Wasn't sure if it was binding brake pad or wheel bearing, but I knew which side needed work. Turned out to be wheel bearing.

    I've always been VERY curious. How exactly does a damaged hub cause damage to the inner race of the bearing? Unless the hub itself is acting as the inner race which doesn't seem to be the case?

    I had a bad bearing in my Camry and it made that noise. Thought it was the front right hub bearing because I hit a curb. Took it to a mechanic. Turns out it was the rear right. Glad I didn’t try to do it myself because when driving it 100% sounded like the noise was in the front. The mechanic did great work for me before. Used a stethoscope and determined it was 100% coming from the rear even though he agreed it sounded like it was in front while driving. If I tried to DIY I would’ve ended up replacing the wrong part!

    I bought TRQ front hub and bearing set for my Chevy 2500HD, from you folks. Put them in to specs. Now 2500 miles later they are whining like crazy. Have not yet started to wobble thank goodness. They were replaced under warranty, but I'm afraid to put them in, I don't want to be doing front hubs every 2500 miles. Probably end up spending more and put in moogs.

    I was not aware of the potential problem of over tightening the wheel bearing by using the impact wrench for the axle nut. If I have over tightened should I back it off and verify the torque or is the damage done and the hub assembly need to be replaced?

  • @fishon1073
    @fishon1073 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Over tightening with a impact gun will also set your ABS light on that hub. I found out after 6 months of trying to diagnosis my ABS light. Replaced a CV axle and tightened with a impact gun on the axle nut . Squeezed the axle into the hub and threw off my wheel sensor and tire speed. Lesson learned. Also you should replace your axle nut each time you remove it.

    what if your truck f 150 has a jingling sound along with an intermittent scraping coming from the tires as you drive. barely heard it when 20 miles from destination then when a couple of miles to destination it was getting load, you can hear it through all the traffic going by.

    Thank you for a great video. My 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe was making noise from front end, so suspected wheel bearings. No wheel wobble, so wondered what was causing the noise. Rotating the suspect wheel did not make much noise, because not many RPM. Jacked all car up and ran engine to turn wheels. The vibration in the strut spring was the deciding factor. No vibration on the good side, but significant on the bad side. Removed the bearing assembly, and then you can tell that it's bad with that grating noise/resistance as you turn it.
