    I’m always amazed at how many customers truly believe that regular preventative maintenance is a scam. So many have told me “my cars always last 90-100k and I’ve never done maintenance!”.
    While that’s true and most cars will last that long my cars generally last 250-350k before I sell them and very rarely need repair other than regular wear items like tires and brakes.

    Here’s a tip for people with automatic cars. When parking on a steep hill, set the emergency brake first then put the transmission in park. Doing this let’s the brake hold the car and when leaving makes the transmission easier to shift. Otherwise you may not be able to get the transmission out of park.

      I helped a friend's father restore a 1959 Plymouth Fury. When he bought the car it had 85,000 miles on it and most of the parts were original to the car. First time I looked under the hood, I could not believe how clean everything was, especially since the car had been in storage for almost 15 years. Only things we did to do was replace the belts and hoses, rebuild the carburetor, replace one panel on the body, and flush and change the fluids.

    Also, on turbos, if you turn the engine off as soon as you come to a stop, the engine stops pumping oil to the turbo which is still spinning at maybe 20,000 rpm with NO oil supply to it. The 30 second rule is a good one!

    • @The97Noname
      @The97Noname 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      how about superchargers tho?

    • @neilfoster814
      @neilfoster814 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@The97Noname no, superchargers are mechanically driven by gears from the crankshaft, so as soon as the crankshaft stops rotating, the supercharger also stops.
      Turbochargers are free spinning, not connected mechanically to anything, only driven by high pressure exhaust gas similar to how a jet engine works.

    • @Kevin-dt9xm
      @Kevin-dt9xm ปีที่แล้ว +10

      You would have to basically turn off the ignition at full boost meaning WOT for this to happen, i dont think anyone is turning off the engine with the gas pedal through the floor. It truly takes like a couple of seconds at idle for the turbo to slow down. You should let your turbocharged engine idle for 30-90 seconds before turning it off, and it is because of oil flow, but its not because the turbo is still spinning at high speed, its because the turbo is hot as hell and if you cut the oil flow, the oil in the turbo is just gonna sit in that heat and coke up, which restricts future oil flow and can wreck the turbo.

The proper term is parking brake, never use the parking brake when you are driving it can and will lock up your rear wheels and cause you to spin out. 2:23 - does depend on the gas. Shell, Chevron, Costco, and some other stations have more detergents in their fuels. Shell also seems to rate their fuel slightly lower than it actually scores on the anti-nock index. I used to fill at different stations and would have to put injector cleaner in a tank every oil change. Ever since I started filling 70% + of the time at shell and avoiding esso (worst gas out there) I haven't had issues. Manufacturers know that the government doesn't require enough additives so they all joined the Top Tier fuel program.

    If you’re in a collision that activates the airbags, put in neutral and use the emergency brake (handbrake in the UK). If you put it in park & turn it off, modern cars have a timer preventing you starting the car, and a lock on the transmission so you won’t be able to move the car out of the way for some time:- discovered this helping at a collision, & when recovery arrived about an hour later, he started the car no problem (timed out) but initially the car was in a dangerous place & needed police to put out cones etc.

    Ive also found that using the emergency brake when you put your automatic trans in park saves your auto parking pawl from putting pressure on your auto trans as well. Thats when you put it in park and your car will roll back or forward a few inches and then come to a hard stop. Then, the next time you drive it, it shifts hard from Park to Drive. If your car is making a thud noise, when doing this, the parking pawl has taken a beating. Reduce the pressure by using the e brake on an automatic will keep it from wearing out.( My car was used and the previous owner clearly didn't do this, so my trans will hard shift from Park to Drive. Using the e brake prevented any more damage to the parking pawl.)

    downshifts with revmatching and the upshifts too can be absolutely safe and do minimal damage and wear to any component... i shift often when i am driving, but i use the engine braking to its full potential as i drive a diesel, so yeah, i will downshift and let it go from 2.8k rpm to 1k before downshifting again or braking as my clutches last for at least 300000km and i do change them more often, as i like to check up on the flywheels and clutch bearings and dust the bell out here and again, not to talk about bleeding the clutch hydraulics, but proper shifting should not be discouraged... being in the optimal gear for the speed is always a good idea, as both the engine braking and possibility of hard acceleration are available... of course, lest you are coasting highway or on an empty road and at limit for the area...

    Fuel additives ... for decades I agreed with you. But a couple of years back, our 2012 Mazda CX-9 started misfiring (consistently on one cylinder, then on a second ... according to the OBDII readout). Not having time for teardown, I tried two doses of a fuel additive. It cleared up the problem. After a year, it started to return .. at the first sign, I tossed in another. It's 9 months since .. no return yet.
    No doubt I ought to have the fuel system professionally dealt with. But at the cost of eating my hat, and little additive yearly ... I may keep putting that off until there's a reason for a major service.
    So, additives do seem to have some utility after all.

    Great advice, but for my generation this is almost all common knowledge. I think it is more for the younger ones who seem less interested and less clued up on cars these days. But a lot of that has to be due to more and more people being able to afford new or newer cars than 30 years ago and the cars last much longer before anything starts to go wrong with them as long as they are serviced regular that is. When I were in my 20's I could only afford second hand cars so was always something needing repairs. Nowadays all my cars I buy are brand new and under warranty so basically don't need to do anything with them. I think that is the problem with a lot of people nowadays, while cars do still break and require repairs and maintenance most people just take it to the garage if and when it breaks instead of learning about how to fix it themselves. And if it is under warranty of course we are not going to touch it ourselves.

    • @RacingPepe
      @RacingPepe ปีที่แล้ว

      Cars from today definitely do not last longer than they did in the late 90s and early 2000s. They are not built that way as it is often cheaper to junk them. Many parts cannot be repaired or revised anymore either. It's all on a replacement basis. Plus the fact that everything is time consuming to reach, so compact and connected by sensors that don't like to be interrupted. My colleague can't even access the battery for a jumpstart without removing two plastic panels under the hood first. We had a hybrid EV come in that wouldn't release the fuel door because it was electrically powered. The freaking fuel door.
      We often joke we should have studied to become electricians so we could work on modern cars more efficiently. Dirty hands are a thing of the past and I miss it.

    • @ssu7653
      @ssu7653 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RacingPepe New cars last about as long as old cars did, just that the failed old cars never got old so we forgot about them.
      The thing that ruin it on newer cars is that you have the machanics and the electronics all in one deal. You might be able to tear a car apart and put it back together with your eyes closed, but that do little good when some random sensor give and obscure error that you need "special" equiptment to even see. Never mind changing something in the software
