Bad front pump? Whining transmission

  • Got my car back from aamco, I was right, the governor was on backwards. took it out to drive, and started hearing this sound..but it shifts. But it doesn't like to go downgear once it gets past 3rd,unless you pull it to 1st low. It also binds when you give it gas when it's in drive, not (od) or 1st low, sometimes. Does anyone know what this noise is??? I was told it just needs to be driven, and to build the pressure up, and that it could be a bit low on fluid.

    See my friend thinks it's the front pump. The converter is brand new. The pump was just rebuilt with new seals. We recently put a little bit more fluid in it, and it let up on the sound a bit, and it started shifting through a bit better and less jerky. If you floor it at a dead stop it shudders and acts like it slips. But then it'll let off and start going through the gears...it's very weird. But it is working.

    Me and my neighbor did the transmission rebuild ourselves, it just cost me 164$ for the kit, and 56$ for a converter. And a shit ton of hours and blood. But it still didn't have second, so I spent another 50$ for a valve body rebuild, then I drove the car to aamco to get the governor put on right, and that was 231$. So total is about 500$ total. But then there's this issue now, in the video.

    Well even when I first got the car there wasn't really any whining sound except the power steering pump,but that's just how fords are. I pretty much think it is indeed the front pump though..since that is the only thing that wasn't replaced,just new seals.

    Well, I torqued the vb down to 80inch. But..I wasn't happy what I saw in the pan..I need another rebuild..

    Started it up today,topped off the coolant and oil, and revved it up,and noticed the sound was gone? So I test drove it,and it is gone, but it still isn't shifting right. It's like it only shifts when it's warmed up.

    yes no leaks or anything, it is dead topped off lol and it's the right kind too.

    I'm either going to just sell it....or get my friends friend to rebuild it for 200..if I can ever keep 200..

    Late comment but I have a c4 and when I Rev it it sounds like a supercharger whine and I thought it was a converter but realize it's new so I think it's front pump

      It's a very specific sound, newer gm transmission front pumps are a lot louder when they go bad. This was my 84 towncar.

  • @rkubistek100
    @rkubistek100 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes it is the front pump. My truck did the same thing 2 times. Now the transmission shop says that GM has faulty pumps.

      Could you drive it at all when the pump went bad?

    • @The18Jake
      @The18Jake  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can... but highly not recommended. It will burn up your clutch's and steels in the transmission.

    my truck is doing that and when its cold my reverse won't work?

    • @The18Jake
      @The18Jake  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Late reply but this is over a 30 year old ford AOD 4 speed overdrive automatic transmission. If your truck is newer than 1986 then I'm sure there is electrical connections/controllers for your transmission. Pre- 1985 for these Lincolns there was no tcm module for controlling the transmission, it was all mechanical. If your truck/transmission whines from the front section only in park/neutral, than it could be a possibility, but I know this just from this type of transmission.

    • @The18Jake
      @The18Jake  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      And your reverse gear issue, there could be many reasons, going back to the over 30 year old transmission thing here, This old AOD used servos, and valve body valves to maneuver pressure to the sections for reverse clutch's and steels/planetary gear sets. If your transmission uses servos, I believe you could first start with taking your valvebody out of the bottom of your transmission and check if any of the "valves" Are stuck, or if they don't move at all. When doing anything to a valve body, be careful, as there are small checkballs that you DO NOT want to lose. It's either the valve body, or servo{depending of year of vehicle} or just the reverse section of clutch's that are worn and just aren't catching when going into reverse.

    This is a very common noise that is usually the front pump within the transmission! I had to happen to my Dodge Charger, it’s most likely the pump!

    • @The18Jake
      @The18Jake  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes this was the front pump. However this video is very old, I wish I still had my hands on this car but unfortunately it went for the same amount I purchased it for. 500$

  • @danielrusk7216
    @danielrusk7216 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Did you ever find out what was causing the noise? Mine sounds the same way.

    • @The18Jake
      @The18Jake  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daniel Rusk this is a ford aod transmission so it was not electronically controlled. The main front pump that cycles the pressure of transmission fluid through the clutches and steels in the transmission, went bad. The transmissions "kickdown" linkage had become disconnected from the throttle body, and the pump had defaulted to force 0% pressure which then burned up all the friction material and steel/clutch packs

    • @The18Jake
      @The18Jake  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Late comment,car is gone but I did find the issue. The main front transmission pump had gone bad,and I didn't replace it when I rebuilt the transmission. So basically the front pump burnt up the brand new clutch's I had installed in the transmission. You have the torque converter then the front pump is the main thing you see after taking the converter off. It's held on with 5 main bolts I believe. It's been a while since I've looked at an AOD transmission. But mine was bad and that was what my whining was coming from.
