This is such Great Knowledge. I’m currently getting my Transmission Replace for a used Transmission with 47k miles by a Mechanic for $3000. Watching this video will give me an insight on how it’s supposed to get Done and Hopefully EveryThing Goes Well !
Good call on engine mounts. Doing the torque converter on my 09 jk and checked the mounts as soon as it was mentioned, they ain’t surviving this job and I have so many wobble factors to eliminate I don’t need that one. Thank you sir
I did this the first time I installed the transmission for my Camaro and managed to crank my freshly rebuilt engine and broke the bell housing and the rotor on the pump. Was a very expensive mistake but a learning experience.
Great little video to educate those who are not aware of the torque convertor seating .... A quick tip is when you remove a torque convertor look and mark your notch points on the pump ( transmission front ) with a paper whiteout marker . It holds up well and don't easily disappear like a marker on rust . Doing so you have a reference point for a quick and easy install .... Again , nice video ....👍👍

Just put a straight edge across the front and measure the gap before you remove and after you place. For my truck the TC was super heavy and it was really tight and hard to tell it was in but an easy solution was to measure the gap also knew it wasn't good when I couldn't rotate the flex plate.

I'm only 42 seconds into this video and I think I already know what he's about to speak about. I was maybe 15yrs old or younger when my brother taught me so much about mechanics and he hardly ever spoke, I just paid close attention to everything he did without bein all up in his way cause I knew I was going to have to do everything he was doing some day, hands-on is how I learned everything about how to fix and keep vehicles running..I remember it like it was days ago. When installing a torque converter, at least 3 clicks depending on the years and types of the vehicle's to make sure it's all the way inside the trans pump, never install a torque converter dry without adding fluid cause it helps to prime the pump. The vehicle will not move without adding fluid to the torque converter..It's like any kind of a pump, they don't work without being primed. Plus I always changed the front pump bushing and both front and rear seals cause the bushings acts as a rod bearing in engine's. It keeps the wobble and wear of the seal by closing a tiny gap between the converter and pump. I'm pretty sure I always changed the rear bushing and seal cause the transmissions out of the vehicle's and it's easier to do with em out plus the transmission will last longer than if people just swap out transmissions and leave it at that..Shouldn't be any wobble at all when the torque converter is all the way inside the pump, plus you should never have enough space between the torque converter and bell-housing to put your fingers behind the torque converter..I watched soooo many people do it wrong and they ended up messing up the front pump by not listening to anything I'd try to tell em..I'm not perfect and I've made many mistakes when I's younger but as I got older, anything I did to people's vehicle's they never came back with the same problem. I also went to school for 2yrs in 84 and 85 cause things were starting to become complicated when automobile industry's started coming out with electronics and computers which always got under my skin until I had all that happy stuff figured out. I had to go back to school in 2002 to learn about the newer computerized vehicles. I think I made it not even a couple weeks and I got a job at a speed shop and body shop combined cause hands on is the only way I'd ever learnt anything cause everyone has their own ways of doing things and I don't understand a bunch of gabn. I usually just scope everything out and tare into it and fix everything that way..I've almost made a few mistakes but I always knew who to go to so I didn't mess up a vehicle that wasn't mine and couldn't afford to come outa pocket to correct any mistakes..Now we have Google and it comes in handy unless it's some jackleg that has no ideas whatsoever of what they're doing..I don't understand why TH-cam and Google let's people that have no idea about mechanics make it past both by getting everything they've done posted anyway..A good example is a young guy decided he was going to fly by the seat of his pants and do mechanics for the world of webbernet so they know how to do simple things like brakes and whatnot. Dude removed the spindle and all just to change front brake pads. He unbolted both upper and lower ball joints, or struts, and the tie-rod ends on a front wheel drive vehicle, axle and all just to change front brake pads on a vehicle. 2 bolts and a bleeder valve, that job should've been done in 15 or 20 minutes at the most. It sometimes takes longer to remove the tire and wheel than it does to change brake pads and shoes on most American made vehicles..😂
Great info almost messed up mine due to the same error first time for me. There was a gap with the bellhousing and I had. A lot of pressure thought I'd screwed the pump but I got by. Wish I watched this video first.
I learned this the hard way. Tried to bolt to the motor on my 330xi. Cracked the pump. Lucky for me, the neighbor had a 325xi next door for parts with the same transmission next door. So I just swamped in that pump.

Great stuff! Currently working on an automatic transmission on a 1998 Honda Prelude.. not many videos online for that kind of car.. specially automatic transmissions…
Since you brought up the part that you should add fluid into the torque converter before installing it onto the transmission, what if you are using the same torque converter that came out of the same transmission after doing a new torque converter seal but the torque converter doesn't have any fluid coming out when you turn it upside down and you installed back the torque converter without adding fluid into it? Wouldn't the torque converter just fill itself up when you add fluid into the transmission?
Great video. My mazda neutralises when going to 3rd gear and i have to put it in low gear(L) to keep driving. I just feel the transmission isnt installed properly

This is awesome information. I got a 2015 Chrysler Town and Country which has an hydro locked engine. In my case my problem is I cant separate the transmission from engine from underneath the van because I cant spin the crankshaft; there is only a small window where by spinning the crankshaft it rotates the torque converter and all 4 bolts can be unbolted from there but since mine cant spin how do i take it apart without destroying anything? A mechanic said to pull out the engine and transmission all at once from the bay but then the issue remains right? now another mechanic suggested to open the engine from underneath to get to the connecting rods cams and unbolt all 6 cylinder connecting rods, this way may free the damage or damaged ones and be able to spin the crankshaft and hence unbolt the transmission; this while the engine still in the van. It is easier to leave the transmission in place for me; I am not a mechanic and my shop is limited to a half lift and lot of lacking knowledge how to do this; got the Haynes manual, you tube, mechanics who are willing to share their knowledge and a severe case of empty wallet which is why I have to do this myself as can not afford it to a pro. I dont know if this is the right solution, another mechanic said "dont waste your time" but when it comes to fixing this engine "time" is something I will definitely throw at it as I want to do it right. Not my first rodeo, already brought a car from the scrap yard to fully functional and have another one to repair as well also full engine work so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
THIS is what I forgot. Had to replace a flexplate, and none of the videos I watched mentioned any of this. I put it all back together, but couldn't start the vehicle. Luckily. I tried starting it and and it did turn over several times, but never actually started. I heard a bit of jangling inside... I hope I'm able to take it back apart and try it again without having to buy another part.
I rebuilt my 4r75e tranny in my f150 all while taking my time with details and made sure sometimes getting details from multiple sources & buying superior grade parts. I basically spent $1500 with new planetary, direct drum, reverse drum, and sonnax kit. Few other purchases too. While I was a stickler for a month in evenings doing rebuild I got excited & didn't pay attention nearly with torque converter & after 2 days it started pouring fluids. Anyway I have removed tranny and don't see any damage besides my seal popped out on front so now putting it back in now so please wish my luck on it cause I need it.
My gear is not engaging, it makes so much noise and doesn't drive, thinking of changing the gear. Will this help if I can get someone to look at it for me.

Greetings from Costa Rica, I have a 2001 E46 with a ZF transmission, Steptronic, the issue is that the manual speeds do work, but in Automatic or Sport it does not change from first to second gear
Great video. I have a PO741 on a ZF Tranny. I have not muster the courage to drop the transmission. The risks that terrify me are as follows: 1. bell housing screws get stripped or snap off 2. Tranny oil pump seal get stuck to torque convertor when pulling it out 3. Dowel pin seems to cause lots of issues when detaching tranny from engine/starter motor - I could see getting impatient and breaking something. 4. Not installing TC correctly (this video). Question: Are these concerns valid and have you ever experienced any? Thanks in advance.

Hey your videos are awesome, ive was able to do the fluid change on a Land rover! Now Im wondering if the torque converter is damaged, do you have any videos on that?
Hi bro I like your videos. They are informative. I have question. I change oil on my cars. But recently I have bad experiences. I changed oil on Hyundai sonata and I put right oil type with different brand. It kept seeping. But there was no obvious leak. It has caused little problem in performance.. Can you make a comprehensive oil change video?
All ways replace the front pump seal anytime you pull the transmission out, even if you pulled transmission to make something correct and go right back in. Small price to pay, just it case it would might leak. I have been there more than once.
You know you sht! that's a great tip, Should be a dimension somewhere so you could measure the depth from the face of the bell housing to a part on the converter to be sure its all the way in. Thanks another Great video.
I made this mistake on my first truck when I was a teenager. I tried to marry the gap between the engine, and transmission by tightening up the bell housing bolts. It ended up snapping an ear off the bell housing.

Great tutorial! I have a question. Is it possible to drive the car for a long time with the converter incorrectly mounted? I had some problems with my gearbox and the auto shop said, that the converter was incorrectly mounted. I have been driving for over 8000 Km with the fault, if it is correct what they are saying. I don't belive them
I just did the rear main seal on my car. And when I was driving the car. It was fine but I think when I went to second or third Gear it kind of slipped.
I would first put it in wrong deliberately, then mark or just observe how far in it goes, then I would know that I've got to get it further than that if I want to be sure it's in right. And I can mark the wrong one by placing a straight edge across the bell housing and measuring from the bell housing to a flat point on the torque converter. Let's say it is one inch. Then I know after all my fiddling to get it in right, it needs to be more than one inch, maybe as much as two inches, which is very noticable using the straight edge method.
I have a 1997 GMC Sierra 1500 truck with a 5.7 liter vortec engine with a 4l60e transmission and i was driving down the road and my truck just stopped pulling.Got it home and I have to much fluid in it so in the next couple of days im going to drain some fluid and see if it fixes it .I might change my filter and gasket too .Maybe you could give me a reply?
Just get a stick shift no need to worry about a torgue converter and just remember guys when you put fluid in the torgue converter make sure you fill it all the way up so when you put it in you get oil all over the bell housing and the make sure you cut all the zip ties at an angle for sharp points and don't forget threadlock and over torgue every bolt on it
I have a diagnosis question. I went to a transmission shop to do a fluid change and they did a transmission flush with an ATF not recommended by the owner's manual, a 2011 Subaru Tribeca, 100k miles. Now I feel a shudder during the lock-up, after the 5th gear. The shop claim the ATF is compatible with my car, but clearly is not. Does this shudder will go away anytime soon or is it better to replace the ATF with the recommended one? Thanks.

A good one man, I changed my transmission and I was not advised to change the engine mount, my car vibration violatly, thenx for the video
Great tips especially on torque converter and replacing transmission and motor mounts. Thanks for the video.
Thanks James!
Excellent video! I would love to see the parts next time while you talk about them “engine mounts, starter etc”
See vid titled “How To Remove BMW E46 Automatic Transmission.” Published 06-06-17.

If you don’t see the parts there, you’ll find it in the vid archive. Good luck.
As ^ Razor Rich said, you can use the link he posted. We also have other videos that are DIYs for engine mounts and others that have parts linked in the description. Thanks!!
Extremely well explained and clearly spoken. Just taught an old dog some new trix!
Great video indeed, how does it destroy the pump
Nice video. I have done this stuff once, with BMW and GM case and yes, it felt bit tricky for the first time. I wish I would have had this kinda guide to watch at that point. :)
Thanks man, better late than never lol
Rookie Mistake
Another one is pinching the wiring harness between the bell housing and the engine block upon installation. Don’t forget to flush your transmission cooler
I just did this. I reinstalled it correctly. Hopefully nothing broke. Putting it I'm with engine now. Never started the car yet.
wow im glad i watched this video before replacing my transmission on my 330i !
thank you very much. i just learnt that i might have damaged my transmission system while fitting the engine back.
was very useful will re do it all over again and check for damage.thanks once again.
Hi, could you tell me what could wrong if you put to much transmissionfluid into the transmission. Would it damage anything? p.s great video
Thanks great video. When you say fill the torque converter. About how much do you mean. If the tc was standing upright do you mean half way up. Thanks
Could you make two chalk marks on housing and converter before removing to help align easily?
For the torque converter, how much torque pressure do you need to use for the bolts?
Excellent clear and well explained !! Can I really pull trans out of my 2005 expedition 5.4 engine. I’ve pulled manual out of my 92 ranger but never a big automatic. I’ll try to find one of your removal vids.
Thank you young man.❤
03 honda odyssey same setup installed reman 5 years ago still running regularly flush buy from auto zone
Thank you my brother this week im going to replace transmission on my 2004 jaguar
Thank you for preventing damage to my transmission
A lot of people forget the torque converter seal ring
This video came out just in time, all your vids have been great help but I just got my transmission to replace on my E46 325ci
How much did it cost u
My gear is not engaging, it makes so much noise and doesn't drive, thinking of changing the gear. Will this help if I can get someone to look at it for me.
Very educational indeed. I need your help please ? Can I seek your advice on my KIA Cerato 2011 transmission failure and now need to overhaul gearbox with master repair kit
Awesome illustration, good luck and stay blessed .
This was a very educational video. You did a great job brother. Be proud of yourself and thank you for helping a lot of people who would messed up their transmissions. I salute you guys great content.🫡🎯💯🔥

ARE YOU READY ,I've got a bf mk11 with zf 6 speed triptronic that I was told 2n half years ago was toast and still today I start my car let it run open thermostat shift through gears in auto mode p.r.n.d several times and wow still goes same as yesterday don't do burnouts .
LOL Scotty Kilmer just uploaded a transmission fluid video too.
Haha what a coincidence!
@@ShopLifeTV I left his video to watch yours haha, all he does is bag on BMW's and Nissan's not saying he's not wrong, just getting old.
REV UP YOUR ENGINES!!!!

A very good video! This young man explained it well! Thanks!
That was a great video I always thought that it only had to a-line twice so good to know!
I have a 1981 DT 466 International and it is an 5 speed automatic transmission does it also have to a-line 3 times or is there a different procedure for a highway truck?
Hey your videos are awesome, ive was able to do the fluid change on a Land rover! Now Im wondering if the torque converter is damaged, do you have any videos on that?
If you are rebuilding your transmission, do you have to fill your torque converter?
Good info!!! I know because I have unfortunately made these mistakes before and paid the price.
Does this apply to EVERY transmission..like an early 80s GM 200R4!??
How have things been since you opened the new shop?
One of the best. Thanks - aiming to do a N46 TC change so mighty to know this cheers
Hi bro
I like your videos.
Thinking of doing my tranny myself never knew about the channel key for the torque converter if I do ill be sure to check this thank you for sharing 💯
You know you sht! that's a great tip, Should be a dimension somewhere so you could measure the depth from the face of the bell housing to a part on the converter to be sure its all the way in. Thanks another Great video.
I have a 2012 Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.4L L4 MFI (J24B)-0 can you make a video on rebuilding the transmission
Can you do a video on how to do basic car maintenance in an E46?
I have a few videos that go over most maintenance items on the e46!
I made this mistake on my first truck when I was a teenager. I tried to marry the gap between the engine, and transmission by tightening up the bell housing bolts. It ended up snapping an ear off the bell housing.
Good presentation and great advice. Thank you!
Great video.... Thanks for the information. Ps. Really well produced. So many of these videos are filmed as "point of view" perspective. That is really annoying. You did a great job!
I have a Allison 2000.the the valve body needs replacing and tips on that
Damn, wish I would have seen this sooner. Forged the motor and put everything back together, blew my entire trans by improper aligning it. good reason to get it upgraded now lol. $3500 down the drain!
HELLO BUDDY THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I SEE YOUR VIDEO👍 I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MY 2002 SUBARU OUTBACK 3.0 I BRING DOWN THE ENGINE AND WHEN I PUT IT BACK I I THINK MESSED UP WITH THE TORQUE CONVERTER (I'm not sure) TO PUT IT IN AS YOU SHOWN HERE. MY QUESTION IS, ONCE
IS ALL THE WAY IN THE TORQUE SHOULD SPIN EASILY WITH NO MUCH PRESSURE?🙏 BECAUSE MINE DOESN'T SPIN ALL THE WAY. AND IT STACKS. FIRST WHEN I PUT THE ENGINE BACK, NEVER TURNS OVER WITH TWO HANDS, OR A RATCHET FRONT MAIN SPROCKET NOT EVEN MOVE A MILLIMETER IT WAS STUCKED.... CAN YOU TELL ME IF CAN BE THE DAMAGE THE TORQUE ITSELF OR THE OIL PUMP IN THE TRANSMISSION???🤔 I APPRECIATE IT ANY TIPS
Great video. Thanks for making it. Definitely saved me some trouble.
Hey man are you able to upload a video going over how to repair broken shadow line exterior trim?
Do you any DIY for E46 headlights and the wiring?
Thank you sir! Concise and to the point, excellent job!😎
Thanks so much for sharing this info. Very clear video
Keep up the good work.
You can even hear it, the "thump" sound. It should be seated firm with no wiggle...
I love how you say “anuddeg thing” like you’re from Chicago
Does the 4l80e have the 3 stages you speak of?
Is there a way to get this lined up after you already have the torque convertor on the shaft? EI: turning the driveshaft, engine crankshaft?
Great tutorial!
I have a question.
Is it possible to drive the car for a long time with the converter incorrectly mounted?
I had some problems with my gearbox and the auto shop said, that the converter was incorrectly mounted. I have been driving for over 8000 Km with the fault, if it is correct what they are saying. I don't belive them
This tutorial will be of great help when I replace a transmission (never) 😏
Hi
during the oil change shud, do I transmission flushing?
Had my in for 2 years now...is it safe to say im safe?
What will cause a dog type whimper when a transmission shifts from first to second. It will run along great once in high. 2007 caravan automatic v6.
How much oil is needed to put into torque converter before the installment to gearbox?
Hey how do you push that rod all the way in the transmission before inserting the torque converter
simple and useful ! Ironic that you've made this video, because I gotta put a different auto trans in my friends 325i (:
Same here. Reverse went out in my 325i.
@@motorcitymadman1969 cars and things we go through with them...(:
Just in time lol Good luck with the replacement man!
Just get a stick shift no need to worry about a torgue converter and just remember guys when you put fluid in the torgue converter make sure you fill it all the way up so when you put it in you get oil all over the bell housing and the make sure you cut all the zip ties at an angle for sharp points and don't forget threadlock and over torgue every bolt on it
How much oili should be put on torque converter? And what if torque converter moves when we fit transmission to the engine?.
Thanks.
