This is the video I tell all my fellow hunters to watch if they want to learn how to use a mouth call. I'm continuously surprised at the number of hunters that are not aware of the individual air flow characteristics. If I could only recommend one turkey calling instructional video, this would be it. Thanks Shane.
Can’t believe this has been out 9 years and I haven’t seen it til now. But I just started watching you this past fall. Bought the kit and just watched this. Incredible!! An absolute Must for beginners! Thanks
So glad I found this video! Have talked with different call manufacturers at NWTF convention nearly every year and they all say just move your tongue to left, right, or center to get the sound you want. Have bought many brands of calls and watched many videos on diaphragm calls. I sound good but not the way I want too. I’m 54 and have been turkey hunting 20 years and wish to the Good Lord I’d found this video sooner! Excellent job at going into depth all the ins and outs. Will save people money on wasted calls. Finally someone has a CALLING to teach instead of pushing their product! GOD bless you and keep up the excellent work. Will be telling my hunting buddies about this video!
I have been practicing for 2 weeks watching other videos, and I couldn’t figure out how to get the right pitch. The best advice I ever got, was the angle placement. I have been moving the call back and forth around my mouth and unable to get the noise. Thank you for that detail that a lot of people leave out.
Been trying to learn mouth calls since December. This one video made it 100x simpler and easier. I can now reliably make both notes. We'll see if I'm good enough for the turkey woods by next month!
As a veteran caller and Thunder Chicken hunter Shane this is hands down the very best vid on proper mouth calling ever brother! Amen, I will share it out!! John
@@ShaneSimpsonHunting Any time Shane, and if you ever want to get on some high mountain birds in WA or ID I'm 10 min from the boarder of the ID panhandle and hunt both sides. Happy to only bring my camera and film! I have lots of room here at turkey central for bunking and good grounds to hunt minutes away. John
If your serious about wanting to start using a mouth call these are some of the best calls you can buy hands down. Great job on videos and your calls Shane.
Glad I found this video. This is the most comprehensive yet easy to understand explanation I've ever heard. No more frustration and buying a bunch of calls that "don't work". Well they work, just not for me. Now I know why. Thanks Shane.
I’m in PA. I had a henned up tom work its way in on opening day. Never did I think I would get that excited. I managed to get the hens to come within 35yds. The hens were in range but the Tom never came in like the hens. Your content surely helped me get that opportunity. Thanks and I hope you are still enjoying creating your content.
This video is what I’ve needed since I watched so many and ordered many different ones never getting the explanation you’ve share. The details are exactly what’s needed for a beginner. All the others just say try making a noise and in time you’ll develop the call. Well not really not the correct call in my case. You’re high low explanation showing the tongue movement to determine air flow to determine what particular cut call needed was exactly what I’ve been searching for. I have bought so many guessing and swapping up daily and getting frustrated. Man I really appreciate your in-depth videos. Just Subscribed and hope you have more to watch! I need to order your uncut call.
I don't think anyone couldve explained those things better . I've been hunting since I was 15 or so . I'm 29 now I havent heard any of this anywhere. Ya know how many hunting videos I've watched... especially calling tutorials and stuff ... crazy this info is easier to find
I've watched a ton of videos on how to get these calls to make a sound and have never been able to get any sound at all. This description of hissing did the trick! I actually have a starting point now. Thank you!
This is a really great introduction tutorial. This will help so much in me not wasting money on buying all the different call types to see what works for my mouth.
I wish I had found this before this season. I made myself rely on mouth calls this year.. successfully... but this info could’ve been a game changer.. thank you..
I watched this video some time ago but when you mentioned it in your video this morning I had to watch it again with my boy. He’s 11 and I need to get him on the right mouth reed. Thanks.
I'll bet your daughter(s) would appreciate being included in those folks who could/can make turkey calls. You used him/he too much Dad..... 🙂 Excellent video Shane!!
Just got my calls today after watching at least 5 other videos without any luck this one really helped. The Hiss and snake Hiss tip was the game changer and lead me to making my first sounds
Great video thanks for all the info I have been using a split v cut for years but I can never get a good seal I have a very high palette we purchased a call press and I'm going to try to make the reverse cut and bat wing what tensions do you recommend on the calls
9:35 - FINALLY someone shows the proper position in the mouth, rather than just saying "put it on the roof of your mouth and angle it down" (yes, I know he said this too in this video) ... but is "roof and angled down" making the call perpendicular to your tongue? 30 degree angle? 10 degree angle? Thanks for showing the proper position inside of the mouth
Probably the best instructional video ever. I've been using mouth calls since I was a kid but the airflow channel explanation really helps with call selection. I sound better with a ghost cut and now I know why and can expand from that. Thank you, Sir.
Ordered and Received the Mouth Call Mechanics Kit, with the Small Frame. This is a quality product and very nice. The small frame seems to fit my mouth palette well.
I just started trying to learn how to use a mouth call. Very frustrating, when all you have ever used was a slate. But this video was great, learned a lot. No one is good at anything when they first start, but we will keep trying.
Thank you so much for the video. I’m a little confused on how to tell where the air is going for you. When looking, will your tongue literally list to the left or right or stay level? Or is there something you can see on the call to tell which “channel” you fall into left/center/right?
I've turkey hunted and run calls for ages. I've always been horrible, horrible on a diaphragm (having spent likely hundreds of hours trying) and so I've just always run pots and trumpets. When I did run a diaphragm the only thing I could get even remotely decent sound out of was a standard V cut. After watching this video and hearing your idea about the off-center channel of air I took two of my old V cut calls and took one side off each to make a combo cut and reverse combo cut. Found out pretty quick my channel of air must, like yours, be running left of center. That reverse combo opened up the front end. I'd pretty much given up on diaphragms for everything except close-up purrs and clucks to finish birds. Going to buy me a couple reverse combos now and see if I can't get better. All that to say, thanks!
Great videos. Love my Mossberg s as well. My son got a bird with my old 500 this season. I use my 835 now. Having a little trouble finishing the season. All the birds are holding tight to the neighbors. Your calling videos are awesome. You should run up to Michigan. Liberal season this year. Got a spot for yah. 0234 is state wide soon too. Thanks for your knowledge. Happy Hunting.
I tried mouth calls with no success.. I have a small mouth like a child’s and the tape of a call would cut my mouth. I also sounded like a wet duck and had spit flying out- it was ridiculous. This video is very good and makes me want to try again
So I just started to use those call and I can make some sound but its closer to a duck in term of octave then what i usually hear is there a trick I am missing or is it actually fine for turkey
I have a really raspy sound, almost like to much rasp with almost any turkey call I use. If it’s not clean but real high pitched, it’s really raspy. Could that be because of the air flow?
When determining your tongue channel are you looking for the air channel on your tongue and if that is left or right of the crease on your tongue or if the crease on your tongue is left or right of center on the actual diaphragm?
I do not. You can get call building equipment from Thad Bright of Feather Ridge (facebook.com/thad.bright) and call supplies at Pioneer (www.pioneerturkeycalls.com/).
@@ShaneSimpsonHunting Thank you! I reached out to Thad on Facebook to see if he has any equipment for sale. Will get the supplies at Pioneer if he has anything.

I just got my call, first time ever using one. My problem I'm having is sometimes I gag, and I feel like I sound more like a chicken than a turkey. Any advice on this? I know practice is an obvious one but any tips to help me get closer to perfect practice I'd really appreciate.

You're looking for the tiny tunnel in your tongue that air comes from when blowing the call. If there is a visible gap, then that's your air channel.
Shane Simpson Thanks Shane very informative!
