When to Call and not to call to a Gobbler during a TURKEY HUNT

  • There's sometimes when you need to call working a gobbler and get agressive and sometimes when you need to not call at all. calling at the wrong time can mess up a hunt and not calling enough can also turn your hunt into a non successful day.

I like the fact we are being taught how. Many are showing doing, but not why or why not. Then turn to a huge sale pitch. I understand there is a need. Things cost to do. Thanks for not doing infocommercal.

Learned the hard way just as you described. Three nice Toms strutting in place 130 yards away across cut corn field. Calling and calling trying to get them off a hen that one gobbler mounted. I didn't have decoys with me that day. Yesterday talked with those three again and when they came running I shut it down until they turned their backs at 55 yards upon seeing decoys but no sound. Hit them with a mouth call and they immediately turned back towards my decoys. Dropped the biggest one (I think) at 42 yards. Need to perfect my calling but can't complain getting my first turkey my first year turkey hunting

Mr. Dale, I’ve been hunting turkey for 40+ years. I’ve made many, many mistakes when working a turkey. Experience is a great teacher but it sure is frustrating in the moment. You are doing a great service to not only inexperienced turkey hunters but also us old timers. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. 👍

Absolutely! I’ve never had more fun than working a gobbler in the spring woods. I’ve enjoyed many hunts when I walked out of the woods empty handed. It’s not harvesting a turtle that’s the real reward. It’s spending time in the woods trying to trick them into shooting distance. Even if you don’t get one to take home, it’s still the best time I’ve spent in the woods.

Great video Matt. Been watching you for several years. I have tried aggressive calls on a few hung up gobblers before. Every so often I can get them to come in. Not often, but sometimes. What also has happened to me is on occasion I end up calling in a completely different Turkey I never knew was there, that never called at all. Last time it happened was a couple of years ago a mature Tom I was calling to had hens and wasn’t leaving them. Got aggressive and after a few back and forth conversations, I hear a different bird spitting and drumming directly behind me. Ended harvesting that bird. That is why Turkey hunting is so fun and challenging. Thanks for the content, keep it coming. Good luck this season.

Thank you so much for this video. I’m really glad you talked about how to call when a turkey is on the other side of a fence on a neighbor’s property. Everything I’ve been told and read has said to stop calling once a gobbler is approaching, and I’ve had 3 situations in the last couple days where gobblers have hung up on the other side of a fence and I stayed quiet hoping they’d come over, and only tried calling again once they started to leave. I’ll try calling more aggressively next time. Thanks again

Thanks for your advice. I listened to a video about how a hen will go to the Tom. I did that Tuesday morning I moved 3 times. He answered hen box call but also I did the Tom call on the box sitting at a creek but he was across and would go crazy off my gobble call. Never saw him but I had another Tom come in behind me up on a ridge. I saw him at 75 yards but could not get a shot. I was going there to start on the ridge but made a bad choice. I’m learning but was blessed to hear a total of 3 birds. I’ll try again. Hopefully I will get my first Tom tomorrow on Friday. I’ve been messed up with sinus trouble last couple days. Feeling better now. Thanks for your sharing the videos. God bless.

Good tips Matt. Best piece of advice I’ve learned from you is when you want to get up and move, wait 30 more minutes. This has worked for me the last 3 years. We all have that voice in our heads to get up and move if we aren’t seeing anything. Just wait another half hour. Turkey’s aren’t always vocal, and new hunters may get impatient. Just have the discipline to sit 30 more minutes. You will be amazed at your success.

    • @vikingslayer34
      @vikingslayer34 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@ryanjones3043If you located a bird or birds, set a plan to sit and call them in. Even if you only heard one gobble, it does not mean he’s not there and working your way. If you cant locate one by shock calling or hen calling, look for turkey sign and post up. Matt put out a really good video the other day going over this scenario. Good luck this year mate!

I had a hung up Tom's with hens last year. We got within ear shot we could hear the hens he was with. I soft called. He would gobble and his hens would call. When the hens started calling. I would cut them off. I ignored the tom. I would do what you did. The most hateful annoying hen in the woods. Not only did I call his hens in and him. I called in another flock of hens off the hillside behind us. We had birds all around us it was crazy. When the two groups of hens found each other I guess they found that annoying hen cause they all shut up. We had 20 plus birds within 30 yards. We never could get a good ethical shot on the Tom. But still amazing hunt

I made the mistake last year of over calling when there was a turkey really close, but when he came out in front of me he was just out of shooting range and had 7 hens with him. He just sat there strutting for the longest time. Then he started leaving and I went crazy on my call and he came right up to me. About blind calling if i don't see or hear gobbles? Should you be aggressive to get a response or get a quiet Tom to come your direction esp if i have a couple decoys, jake & hen? Thx

In regard to the last part where one would “throw the kitchen sink” once that turkey crosses the barrier and starts coming to you, is that when you would stop calling, Dale? Or would you continue calling the turkey in until you make the shot? Thanks & great video!!!

Is it normal for your mouth call reeds to stick together after using it?

I have a friend who was getting ready to call it a day when a tom called. But after a few calls the tom quit so my friend packed up and headed out. The tom called again and my buddy answered. From a different spot. The tom came in fast and got shot. Pretty sure it was the move that triggered his interest.

The trouble I had was a large gobbler came in running and attacked my decoys making it hard to get a shot with my crossbow. I shot last year and missed. Any advice? The situation also had two other gobblers attacking at the same time.

I had two hens and three Toms across a property line in 2017 hunting in Minnesota. I did everything I could to agitate the the hens and after 40 minutes they came looking for me and the Toms followed ! I killed a gobbler with 5 beards totaling over 26 inches and the bird scored 90.25. Not a high score by national standards, but it is for Minnesota.

I had an Eastern wait 55 minutes before coming in. - He was on the roost gobbling, I was 125 yards away, he flew down & began mating hen after hen. After about 2 hours he walked off toward the North. - That was my chance to get into position. I tip-toed up a hollow using the steep bank on each side for cover.
When I got to where he was gobbling & mating hens I saw an old dead tree. I scratched a place, being easy, trying to sound like a turkey. Once in a sitting position I hit a loud cut on a double reeve. He answered within seconds approx. 300 yards to the North. I put the callers away & just waited.
He never gobbled again until he was right where he flew down, 30 yards in front of me..... BOOM! ~ Led in the head, gobbler took a ride in my truck. 24-lbs. 12" beard, & 1-1/4" spurs. ... I got in his safe place & made a believer out of him, he came back but sure took his time.
On another hunt I had to sit motionless for 2-hours while the gobbler stood looking toward me the whole time until he broke & came another 20 yards before I got him... you gotta love it!
