Hey thanks for the test brother! I like a 45acp personally , but you can't go wrong with either one. Interesting comparison!
Both did very well in my opinion
I use the Federal HST in my 3.5” .45acp and the expansion and penetration are spot on for personal protection.
Good choice
HST's expand!
That’s a fact lol
The 45acp was more damaging even though it was standard pressure. The Federal HST +P 124 grain is my favorite SD/HD round in my Beretta92FS & the weight of the pistol handles it like a champ.
10mm Chicken test 👍
I’ve got one vs 357 mag out there
Love the chicken test. Thanks. Interesting to see how the federal punch would do.
Hmm I’m not sure, of all the tests I’ve done it seems the hst has always done better than the punch, but I haven’t tested many in the punch either though
They make a plus p for the 45
Great video 👍
Both calibers have been a friend of the Reaper for many years.Going way back in time.
That’s a fact
Synchronized dancing when first hit with 45 caliber.
lol 😂
I love the ballistic chicken!!! Most "real" economicly feasible test I've seen.
Both perform well enough and you used the loads I carry in both.
Capacity vs Wound Track.
Me... capacity unless it's the 4th of July weekend 🙂
Closest test I’ve done yet I think
Great review 👍😎
If a 9 it must be the plus P hp, I prefer the 124 gr. If the .45 also a plus P 200 gr hp. Both work well. .45 gets the nod. Larger hole . Meat destruction looked the same from here. Thanks 👍🤠
Good looking test. Both preformed well and as intended. I wouldn't be bothered carrying either of them. I was born with a 45 in my hand though, lol.
I was surprised how close it was
Very well done! Subbed.
Thank you!!!
Excellent test, have you considered placing a hoodie or similar material in front of the first target. Great job
I shoot gold dot 45 +p , they are nasty
That's why I chose HST to protect myself and my wife. I have only nines. My son said that he carries HSTs. When I bought my first pistol he said you have to buy some HSTs.
Good choice
@@thegundungeon I never saw anything bad about them on TH-cam.
Great video both performed excellent, you really can’t go wrong with either. The 30 super carry vs 9 would be interesting.
I have a 30 super carry vs 9mm chicken video out already. I think I used hsts
Edit: nope I used gold dots lol
th-cam.com/video/MOTbJPL8UcY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Q_2GuAhI1BUn_XUr
Good test! Those was very similar. Makes me wonder if you add a heavy clothing layer would they still perform the same?
I’ve yet to see hst’s be affected by the 4 layers of denim in any of the gel tests I’ve done with them. Hst and gold dot are my two go to’s
9mm always. Because carry ammo is 100% important.
I appreciate the mention of different barrel lengths vs. +P ammunition velocities.
The argument is DEFINITELY settled...they're both great!
Good stuff brother 🇺🇸💪
I love my HST’s. The +p 124 is what I carry and when I do carry my G30 I have +p 230 HST in it. I love the chicken tests! You can’t go wrong with either one imho. Awesome video as always good sir 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thank you sir!
I carry both 9mm and 45, 9mm when im just going out casually and 45 when I'm going into the wilderness, also 45 for home defense
Nice video.
Where did you get your ballistic chickens? Midway, Brownell's, or Win Dixie?
@@mopesrus7266 target sports lol
Winner winner, chicken dinner!
New subscriber👍🏾👍🏾Great video.
Thanks man!
Here at the house for a bump in the night a Commander 1911 with a Chip McCormick 10 Rd. magazine stuffed with 230 grain hollow points is the go to. Out and about I take 9mm for the capacity. Good test and video, thank you.
Sounds like a great duo
I have watcher 100's of videos of testing in ballistic gel. This is hands down the best test I have ever seen! It gives a whole new visual on what damage is caused to flesh and bone when hi by a bullet. It also shows that gel alone does not make the bullets react the same as just gel. In many tests you will never get the expansion the bullets are intended to do. Super cool video thanks for the effort. After seeing this it makes you wonder how anyone can survive a gunshot much less four or five!
The human body is a resilient thing lol
@@thegundungeon Boy ain't that the truth!
Good video . I carry a 9 EDC, but I do love and trust my 45s in my full size.
Great test Gun Dungeon! I wouldn't want to be shot by either one of those! I personally carry the 9mm HST +P and will continue to do so.
Solid choice!
Nice job. Can you do Barnes TAC-XPD 9 or 45
Let me see what I can find
@@thegundungeon ok thanks
I would think the 45acp would be a step up over 9mm because of bullet weight and interia and surrounding tissue damage. But, 9mm pistols have usually more rounds. I would prefer 45acp for home defense and 9mm carry. Don't think you can go wrong with either. GREAT VIDEO!
I was ready to predict the 9mm as the clear winner, even as a .45 EDC guy, due to the +P speed. Wow! What an even Steven test!
Bullet win goes to the .45 for its larger diameter and extra weight.
Gun win goes to the Glock for capacity, but also to the 1911 for its oh so sweet trigger (see, I am always trying to find a win for my EDC).
Great video!!
About as close as I think I’ll ever get one lol 😂
Awesome vid both great but momentum will always matter through bone. When the chickens are front and when they are sideways what is the total thickness of them? Like 7" frontal 10" sideways or a bit more? Breastbone is hard and avg of all angles to heart is 7.9"
I have a couple in the freezer for next video, I’ll measure in a bit and get back with you
@thegundungeon something to add next time too line em up get tape measure then shoot. Cool u got through some bones but they must be pretty thin. I do the double 1/4" mdf in my Modern Meat Target because biped sternum is hard and about .4 thick, figure some animals more so. Watch some of mine drop some thoughts. Cheers. I'm 9mm hst sunmer literally right now and 40 hst winter w occasional. 357 and .45 thrown in
5.5” thick, 7.25” wide at the thighs
@thegundungeon through both...??? Or each? That's not so far gives people idea why penetration is important
@@DanTheWolfman each, that was one I measured in the freezer, it’s still kinda sucked in in the vacuum sealed pack too so that’s tight measurements.
I was planning on having chicken today, think I'll opt for the ribeye instead. I like 45 myself but 9 is not bad. Thanks for the video.
Can’t go wrong with ribeye lol
One of the best.
Was crazy close lol
I used to carry 9 but now I carry 45. I’m curious to see what 45 FMJ ammo would do in this test.
I’d guess very small holes and little damage. The same as it does in gel
@@thegundungeon hollow points do very little damage to gel blocks too. With pistol ammo only the permanent wound cavity matters
@@waholoopesorry74 right but fmj does significantly less than an expanded hollow point. No crush cavity at all with a fmj
great video TGD!! i use 9mm because of cost $ cant beat it
That’s a factor as well
Well I learned one thing for sure!! The 9mm HST +P 124 grain will definitely get the job done!!! The Federal HST 230 grain will definitely get the job done as well. I personally have 2 pistols that I EDC & they are the S&W M&P Shield 9mm 2.0 5” barrel loaded with the HST 124 grain +P JHP & my Glock G21 G4 loaded with the HST 230 grain +P JHP. Both are excellent fantastic pistols & I absolutely trust my life with both of them!!! Great video. Yes I subscribed!!!!!!!👍👍
Great choices! Thanks for the sub!!
They're my favorite too!
Wish they’d release the bullets for reloaders
I wish they made a 185 grain HST in 45 ACP also.
Why 185 gr
@sgtbones1837 185 would be good for shorter barrels and increase likelihood of consistent expansion. The added velocity would also aid in dumping that energy early and more violently.
Or a 200
@@thegundungeon yes!
@@rogerwood5228dude there is so much testing being done and most of it is SHOWING short Barrels give 0 expansion
you look absolutely great big bro.
Thank you, started taking fitness serious recently.
I have always been concerned that carrying 9mm in my self defense gun left me at a caliber disadvantage until now.
Great video!
Thank you
Federal HST LE is my #1 choice for Self Defense
I just wish federal would sell the projectiles for us bench junkies lol
I specifically carry .45 because of where I live. I need a man stopper and a wild life stopper. We don’t have black bears that often here but, we do have mountain lions, javelina and black bears roam around on my property. Black bears here don’t really merit 10mm in my opinion.
Did you eat that chicken afterwords
Didn’t watch the end huh? lol 😂 doggos love chicken test day
Federal HST is what I carry in all of my self-defense pistols. It's very good ammunition.
I agree
Do this test again with a 185 gr. 45+p which is what cops carry.
@@edperitore321 do they make an HST in that?
I'm guessing the chickens aren't going on the grill?? This should be a test that Federal uses to show how effective these loads are - wow!
Doggos enjoy when we do ballistic chicken testing lol

I love both calibers and, to be honest, I have never felt that one was balistically superior over the other enough to make a difference for civilian use. Both have a place for CCW with their own pros and cons. I lean towards 9mm for capacity, recoil/follow up shot speed, and weapon size, but I would feel comfortable with either. Love these videos... keep up the great work.
Hence why I’m a 30 super carry fan lol 😆
@@thegundungeon LOL ... man you are selling that hard! I really wanted to like that when it came out. Glad to see you are single-handedly propping up the market.
@@mobilejonny lol I’m trying! I’m going to keep pushing til I get a dang p365 XL chambered in it lol. And a smith and Wesson shield 45 frame but in 10mm. Those are my two wants!
@@thegundungeon If anyone can do it, you can! 🤣 I believe in you.
@@mobilejonny lol 😆
Where’s the super carry? Chickens got off easy lol.
lol 😂 what’s so strange is I was just sitting here thinking of doing a critical defense vs critical defense 9mm vs 30 super carry chicken video when your comment popped up lol
@@thegundungeon that’s funny
@@thegundungeon yea and use your hand loads to show the difference.
.45 acp doesn't need a +P😉
Takeaway: Either one works supremely well. The loads & the guns. I've carried both for years, a 5" 1911 in my young years and a G19 for many. A G19 is way easier to wear all day but a nice standard pressure 45 like this HST is much easier on the ears out of a 5". My first shot is a bit better out of a 1911 but the fast follow-ups are better out of the G19. I EDC the G19 but the 1911 will always be my favorite pistol. HSTs and Gold Dots in these same pressures and weights are my choice. Sometimes 147gr HSTs in a micro 9mm for deep concealment.
Well said
A lot of people say that 9mm is louder than 45acp but when I shoot my G19 & Beretta92FS with my friend's G21 without earmuffs there's literally no sound difference, same with my 40s&w G22 but my Ruger GP100 6" 357mag is way louder.
@@PerceptionVsReality333 9mm+P is considerably louder out of my G19 than 230gr HST is out of a 5" 1911. Not a commander. Not an officer's model. That full length bbl is all the difference. But 357 is so fun with hearing protection.
@@randyduncan795
Well duh, it's a higher than average pressure round genius. I was referring to standard factory FMJ ammo.
@@PerceptionVsReality333 Oh, I see- you think std pressure FMJ is a common choice for a SD load. And yes, even std pressure 9 is louder out of the G19 vs std pressure HST out of a 5". Look up the pressure ratings for both to understand why.
🐔
Poor chicken😂
Chicken!!!....🎉
Fowl play lol
@@thegundungeon lol
The chickens were already dead before you shot them. What carnal damage? Lol.
For the rounds fired, 45 wins.
Bigger holes leak faster.
Being said, the performance discrepancy does not outshadow recoil, capacity, shootability, cost of plastic v steel guns etc.
Guns being equal, Im carrying 10mm, 45A then 9mm, but guns and capacity are not equal and the comparisons are weighted differently.
10mm always wins!
Either or……only capacity is the major difference.
Recoil, momentum, weight, couple other considerations.
nice performing bullets. Don't think you can go wrong with either caliber.
Very good results from both
Lol. +P is cheating.
Another thing to remember is that dead meat is inelastic, so it's no one to one, but it tells us what it tells us.
I have live chickens… 🤔
@@thegundungeon Well hey! Next time the rooster is too loud...
@@vlogfriendsutopia lol 😂
The obvious choice is 9mm. The preform with modern ammunition (HST) is so similar you might as well get the capacity and cost benefits of the 9mm
Ah hem… 30 super carry lol 😂
Speer Gold Dot 200gr +P has ft lb.s at 10mm level.
I have both, i like both and i carry both, altho im not certain if the ,45 will blow your lungs out like the 9mm...
lol I mean Biden said it, it must be true! 😂
Fun video brother. Kinda off topic but where can we find that "Liberty or Death" Tshirt at?? 🫡🔥
@@Chris_Locke Vedder holsters website
Humm,, they done awesome damage but the penetration is lacking , that’s one thing that bothers me about the hst,, I won’t something that digs deep,, I believe I’m gonna have to replace my hst with critical duty ammo,, I no I can get the penetration I won’t from them
As long as you’re carrying a full size barrel, I can’t get critical duty to expand from short barrels.
@@thegundungeon I carry a 43, and XDs and I use the 124gr +p critical duty and they expand great but now when it comes two the 135gr +p or standered pressure from my 43 ad xds they don’t open up half the time, but with the 124gr +p they are awesome
@@buddysumner4022 the 135 is what I tested and couldn’t get to expand reliably. I haven’t tried 124gr critical duty. I typically carry gold dots most of the time since they are sold as just projectiles and I like to roll my own defensive ammo. Knowing for sure each primer has an anvil and compound, every case has a correct charge, and every bullet is crimped correctly means a lot to me, more so than and legal ramification that has yet to ever be an actual case issue in the history of ever lol
@@thegundungeon yep, I believe a lot of people worry to much about over penetration,, but I’ll take my chances if god forbid I have to,
The bullets went through skin meat bones and gel plenty of depth to let something know you are serious. They expanded well and there was lots of damage. Most likely you'll lose something to obtain whatever it is you hope to gain.
