    The .45 offered less penetration but stayed together . However , the explosive effects of the 10mm round coupled with deeper penetration leads me to believe that the 10 would be a better defense round . Either way , I would use either one of 'em with complete confidence that they'd get the job done . Great test , excellent video !

      For that reason, I would say the.45 acp is a better home defense and self defense cartridge in urban areas due to the .45 not over penetrating.

    Don’t know how I haven’t ever seen this channel until now! Definitely subscribing. Cool test / video. I never would have thought small chickens would have stopped the .45 as much as they did. I have seen in my own testing that the .45 is not much of a penetrator. I’ve shot hundreds of hogs with almost every common caliber. I was unimpressed by the 45. It’s not good for large boars in my experience. The .45 is very slow and is overhyped. I’ve had .45 bounce off of auto glass when I was shooting at a friends scrap yard. Meanwhile the 9mm went through EVERY TIME. I wouldn’t carry .45 in the winter for self defense… but I still love the history and heritage of the .45.

    People forget that your target might not be 5ft or 10ft from you. Certain situations may require a bit more speed and distance like say a 10mm… I’m not talking about the 45 I’m talking about people saying the 10mm penetrates too much so they’d rather go with a 9mm. 9mm isn’t that great when it comes to barriers or damage at distance. 10mm is great at everything!

    • @mc4906
      @mc4906 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      10mm is definitely superior but it's also a lot more expensive (makes you less likely to practice) and also more challenging to become proficient with (due to more recoil)

    • @calebschmidt57
      @calebschmidt57 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@mc4906 agreed, practice is most important with the gun you’re going to carry and not just cheap ball ammo but with the expensive hollow points you’re going to carry with, it’s important to know your gun will run then well!! So I completely agree with you, in terms of recoil I’d say .357 sig is a good median with great performance but again it’s gonna cost your kidney for a couple mags.

    The 45 dumps all of its energy really quickly into soft targets. Honestly that's exactly what you want imo for self defense. The 10mm is a beast of a round. Hit so hard the damn thing jumped. But it also kept a lot of its energy as it passed through.

  • @desertdan100

    All I have to say is that all of these videos end up being vs the 45 ACP. That right there, should tell you something. I do like the 10mm. I love my 357 magnum also. I do like my 45 ACP. I have shot lot's of all 3 of those and more. In my Opinion every caliber from 9mm up is a good CC caliber until you hit 10mm. 10 mm is great but not when you are in a self defense shooting and you need follow up shots on target and don't have time to make sure a bystander isn't behind or right next to the target.
    I have double tapped many times and that is where you are going to see what happens.
    I am a gun guy who was raised shooting and a Veteran. I have police experience to draw on and have had relatives in law enforcement also.
    The 10mm now is like the 41 or 44 mag used to be. A fad and overkill for carry.
    Some rounds you carry and some you hunt with.
    The only round that does both is the 357 mag. You can load it down to the level of 38 special + p or up to a full blown hardcast penetrator for Bear.
    Fan Boys won't like this but it will out class a 10mm. I have done it. Now would I carry a 10mm auto loader instead of a 357 mag wheel gun in the Bush sure. Would I carry it instead of a 45 ACP in the Bush, sure.
    There is the king of the auto loaders that I would rather carry in the bush. A 1911 A1 chambered in 460 Rowland.
    If you want to be a fan boy , shoot that for awhile and you might become a convert.

But what if a bullet consistently penetrates or even over-penetrates? Then is shedding weight a problem? What would you rather be hit with, a bullet that remains as 1 piece and penetrates 16" or a bullet that sends a half dozen projectiles 16"? In a perfect world, a bullet would shed ALL of its weight just at the limit of maximum penetration (FBI concludes this is 16"). @@thegundungeon A few of your other viewers have commented in here that the Gold Dot is a .40 cal round and was bonded in such a way to keep it together 'only' at .40 velocities - and that may be well true. But if they made a more 'durable' 10mm version of the same bullet I think I would load this one because the fragmentation when combined with the excellent penetration makes a very devastating round - as the chickens well showed!
      And thanks for this (and other) videos - I think you have a winning combination with the chickens and the gels - better even than Paul Harrel's "bag of orange lung materiel."

    You should try the heavier XTPs in the 10mm Auto. In my experience, the 200 gr XTP is probably the best bullet available for full power 10mm Auto. Driven 1200 fps or so, this bullet expands well and drives deep. I carry the Underwood 200 gr XTP load in my Glock 20, and have taken several deer with it. I know it works. The Gold Dot and most other JHPs on the market are designed for .40 S&W velocities. Driving them faster gives you better performance on paper, but the bullets don't perform as well. The Gold Dot is not supposed to over expand and peel back like you saw with those 180 gr 10mms.

    • @thegundungeon
      @thegundungeon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have some, I’ve tested them in gel, they do really well, they just tend to penetrate more than the gold dots and a lot of people worry about over penetration with 10mm.

    • @MTMILITIAMAN7.62
      @MTMILITIAMAN7.62 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thegundungeon The 10mm Auto doesn't over penetrate. It adequately penetrates. Your 9mm and .45 under penetrate.
      The over penetration argument is tired and old. The only reason you're worried about over penetration is because you intend to violate multiple firearm safety rules. The Four Rules say to be aware of your target and beyond, and to never point a weapon at something you don't intend to destroy. So if your argument is that we should sacrifice terminal effect and penetration to absolve us of our responsibility to follow firearm safety rules, ironically in the name of some misconceived notion of safety, I reject your argument and substitute reality. In reality, we shoot things to over penetrate them, and we live in a nation where 1 in 3 is obese and nearly half is overweight. There are plenty of situations where you're doing to need more than 12 to 14 inches of gel penetration.
      The penetration of the 10mm was the point. Standard .38 and 9mm failed to penetrate auto barriers and deliver enough ass to put down Platt and Matix.

    You don't want over penetration from 10mm. 10mm is a great round for animal defense. But everyday human defense with stopping power 45 remains king, in my opinion. Served for this purpose in multiple wars and continues to deliver. 10mm is scary. You might harm someone else while trying to stop the bad guy.

      The Hornady XTP is probably the best bullet available for the 10mm. The Gold Dot and most other JHP are designed for .40 S&W velocities and don't necessarily deliver better performance driven a couple hundred FPS faster. The XTP is more of a controlled expansion bullet and seems to love the higher velocities of full power 10mm. I carry Underwood 200 gr XTP in my Glock 20. I have taken lots of small critters around the property and several deer with this load, so I know it works. I love 10mm. Nothing else does it for me anymore. I shoot 9mm and .45, and it just seems underwhelming and anticlimactic.

    10MM for the win, Too bad the 45 super is not more popular, the .45ACP was designed in a time when steel alloys were not as strong as they are today so they are only loaded to a maximum pressure of 19,800 PSI because they have to be safe in all guns chambered for the cartridge. The .45 Super cartridge is basically the same size but has a slightly thicker case and is loaded to 28,000 PSI as a maximum pressure which is still low by todays pistol cartridge standards. If the .45ACP were designed today it would be at or greater pressure levels than the .45 super and a better round in my opinion. The .460 Rowland is pushing at the higher end of pistol pressure levels at 40,000 PSI with basically the same case as the .45 Super but about a 1/16" longer to prevent it from chambering in a .45 ACP chamber and may be a bit much for some shooters with higher recoil and muzzle energy sometimes topping 1,000 ft. lbs. so the .45 super would likely win the popularity contest if it were made in a larger variety and supply of guns and ammo made in that chambering. Sorry for the long winded rant.
