In gen 2, badges have a different additional boost that they don't have in other generations: each badges boosts the power of the moves their type by 12.5% (there is one for each type except dark) However both the fire and electric type badges are in Kanto, so before Kanto only Ice punch gets this boost What this means is that NeverMeltIce Ice Punch would have been stronger than Charcoal Fire Punch on neutral targets, and especially against Bruno, it would have turned some ranges into guaranteed KOs sooner
Wait, so in gen 2, dark type moves are weaker than advertised? Or do those boosts not factor in competitive? (Not that it would've mattered considering how most darks were physical and couldn't use their stab anyways)

But Dark type is the only type that doesn't ever get that 12.5% boost in the story mode. Should have just applied it to Karen, or one of the rival battles, but alas.
A note for future Crystal impossible challenges: a recent video by pimanrules about the Crystal gen revealed that due to a small coding error Red will only use his Full Restores on his highest level pokemon, ergo Pikachu, so you never have to worry about them coming out for his real dangerous pokemon like his Snorlax.

Oh, fun fact for if you ever have to use Struggle again in Gen 2. I don't remember the video that taught me this, but equipping Pink Bow will actaully boost the power of Struggle despite being a typeless move. If this does end up being true, I hope this helps in your future Gen 2 runs.
When red and blue came out my dad bought them and played them with my brother and I. He went through a majority of the game without evolving Abra because he assumed it would learn moves sooner. This was a long time ago but I think he leveled that thing to 50 something before he asked us why it hadn't learned any moves. Sad thing is, he also got the game guide and just.. never looked it up?

Just like in the Gen 1 run, it's actually a monster, just disgustingly slow at the first bit. It's such a strong first stage evolution. That twist halfway through got me good tho.
@@jromofo a damage rounding threshold is when a Pokemon's level ends in 0, 3, 5, or 8. The damage a Pokemon does when they're at a damage rounding threshold level is disproportionately higher than other levels.
Not sure it would have mattered, but just so you know the early game might have been slightly less tedious if you had grabbed the Pink Bow from the Tuesday sibling. Weirdly, while struggle does deal typeless damage, in gen 2 only I believe it’s coded as a normal move and still gets the 10% boost. The same is true of the other typeless moves and their corresponding boosting items. Gen 2 gonna gen 2.
@@ZebNyan96 self inflicted confusion damage is supposed to be typeless, but since it was based on the move that was attempted to be used some cases were missed and as a result type boosting held items could boost the damage done to yourself. I think that starting in gen 2, they fixed the STAB boost that gen 1's Struggle had, but relatedly I don't recall if gen 1's confusion damage could be STAB boosted. Anyways, every time they tried doing something without a type, it was hacked together and some things fell through the cracks.
I love the fact that Dynamic Punch was a relevant move in this run Even nowadays in competitive LC we can see Abra pulling some Fighting physical moves like Focus Punch, Submission (no cap) or even Counter to catch Pawniard
Janine is probably underlevelled for immersions sake. They didn't want her to be better than her papa in the Elite Four and I think it's kinda cool they take immersion into account and value it above balance sometimes
Unfortunately you're only immersed for half an hour in total because the Kanto gym leaders are so easy to beat as a result of "immersion" Also doesn't explain why Brock runs a gym in Gen I with level 10 Pokemon. There's even a random hiker in Rock Tunnel with the same team as Brock only levelled twice as high.

Doing this in gen 3 would probably be even more of a grindfest since you'd have to do the game corner to get Psychic. As for the physical Abra run, you'd probably want to do Emerald since Dynamic Punch is a tutor move in the story.
This was an amazing run Jrose! So many twists and turns, and seeing where the hurdles are in using a Pokémon like Abra in a different generation than others, where TM move availability is so important to even doing any damage. Thankfully the physical special split makes it so that you you basically never need to use physical moves, that'd be wild to deal with. Anyway, thanks for the amazing content!
Big unforced error (from what I saw?) was not heading east towards Mahogany Town prior to beating Morty. In Crystal alone, you DO have access to Mahogany through the cave without needing Surf. There were a ton of trainers who could be easily squelched with Headbutt for easy levels.
You still have access to Mahogany Town through Mt. Mortar, in Gold and Silver. Crystal just removed the cave requiring Flash to be lit up. In not one game is Surf actually required to reach Mahogany Town. Surf is only needed to reach the Red Gyarados, at Lake of Rage.
Don't think we didn't notice you beat Whitney, made her cry, had the trainer stop you, then you just walked away instead of talking to Whitney and getting the badge.
When I saw the length of this video I was wondering what parts of the game would be a problem but I was surprised to see how easy it was once you were able to get usable TMs for Abra.

41:20 The AI is indeed acting different. Shadow Ball has no hope to take you out without a crit now so Morty's options are expanded. It's similar to the Quick Attack/Mach Punch scenario in the Elite Four for the first run. Awesome runs. The return of Black Belt Abra was a great one!

God this reminds me of the time i caught a lvl 5 abra in pearl which didnt have teleport but instead had i think it was hidden power or some other offensive move (i vaguely remember a shockwave animation) anyways i basicly made that my starter for that game Good times

Abra going on an absolute rampage in the mid game is great, seeing first form Pokémon dominating fully evolved Pokémon is really fun to watch.

It's not a coding error. It's intentional. There is a coding error related to items that pimanrules talks about, but that's different.

Abra being at 28 as opposed to 26 is pretty significant for facing Bugsy due to 28 being a damage rounding threshold level.
What does that mean?

God this reminds me of the time i caught a lvl 5 abra in pearl which didnt have teleport but instead had i think it was hidden power or some other offensive move (i vaguely remember a shockwave animation) anyways i basicly made that my starter for that game
