- Venonat is a weak Pokemon with a bad movepool and bad typing. Surely this run will be easy!

Rules and Explanations
Rules: (1) Only use the one Pokémon in Battle, others for HMs are fine. (2) No Items in battle (3) No Glitches* (4) Set Mode (5) No saving in the Elite Four (6) No evasion moves
Badge Boost "Glitch" Explanation: When you collect odd numbered badges the game boosts a stat by 12.5%. Brock gives ATK, Surge DEF, Koga SPE, and Blaine SPC (in game text is wrong). When any of your stats are modified (even by you using a move like Withdraw, or your opponent using Leer) the badge boosts are re-applied. So If you use Swords Dance, you also gain *an additional 12.5% in Speed/Defence/Special (on top of the 12.5% you were supposed to be getting). When you level up, the game corrects this error, and only the non-glitch 12.5% remains. Because of how difficult it is to avoid, I've allowed for it to be exploited, since opponents will spam Leer/Growl anyways, and this way battles are less random. Red/Blue are extremely buggy, so there's always going to be some glitches present, and because of how unavoidable this one is, it is allowed in runs, and considered more like a special Generation 1 mechanic as opposed to a glitch.

Have onix instead of paras in Mt moon also Mt moon should have allowed reentry from cerulean city

Have drowzee in lavender tower because they're creepy in a creepy tower instead of route 13
Throw some sandshrew n sandslash in diglett cave but make it low encounter rate
And why just tentacool n tentacruel on surf add a gyarados seaking poliwhirl
And why raticate in the mansion instead of fuschia or cycling road the mansion should have all the fire types be it's one stop shop
Victory road should have chansey to allow easy grinding for a full playthrough with 6
I agree with most of this, the mansion I think is pretty well stacked though

Venonat has got to be the most "just a little guy" Pokemon in the entirety of Gen 1. Just a round little dude that you could probably put into any RPG without it looking out of place.

One bit of feedback as the tier list keeps getting l longer, it would be nice if you could highlight the one being added. It can be hard to find them on the screen sometimes. Something as simple as a colored box around the cell in the table would be great

You could have used Mimic on Agatha to learn Dream Eater and spare some Psychic’s PP. you were already using Sleep Powder and Dream Eater is both super effective and restore HP.
Dream eater is only 10 more base power and requires an extra turn of set up. Plus no 33% chance of lowering special. Granted it could've made the battle more consistent.
@@cherry9787Don't matter, it's still the better choice, he was even risking with Leech Life just to restore health to stay outside Night Shade range, risking wake ups. Dream eater negates all that risk.

PRETTY sure when you pick this mon as a starter 8badges are gifted the elite 4 kneel and the credits begin running for a 120second run
I always find it interesting to see which pokemon will struggle against Brock. That being said, I expect that venonat would have done way worse. Either way, this was a fun run to watch.
This run honestly made me wonder how much faster/easier the run would be if
1. Venonat started with Leech Life instead of Tackle and didn't learn a move at level 23
2. Venonat started with Leech Life instead of Tackle and e.g. learned Confusion at level 23.
Since the two things that made the early run quite miserable were Brock brick walling your tackle and not having psychic until level 43.
Bide could have potentially been used to take out Misty's Starmie earlier on or help against Charmeleon at Rival 3. Venonat could live 2 embers at max hp and bide always hits, so sand attack wouldn't have interfered provided you could get to that point.
Not sure if either of these changes would have mattered in the long run though.
Bide's one of those moves that you try your hardest to forget about and end up not realizing the usefulness of it until its too late 😂

I always REALLY liked the Venomoth from the original trading card game (also the TCG Gameboy game).
It still bothers me how obviously they swapped Venomoth's and Butterfree's families, given the eye similarities between Venonat and Butterfree. I do still like the design of both families though... well, except Metapod...

I think the reason bug is so underpowered in gen 1 because it's actually great against a large portion of the game. Ive done scyther and Pinsir runs where I would change cut to a bug type move and it makes both of them hilariously overpowered
Erika, Sabrina, Misty, the rival's Alakazam and Exeggcuteor, and Koga..... Not bad, considering
Iirc wasn't Bug strong against poison in gen1, weirdly, so it's literally all the rockets too. (aside obvs weakness to them, but poison bug esp, back to neutral)
scyther and pinsir are the only ones with good stats and neither of them learn any bug moves 💀

@@rajkanishuNo they literally just used a GameShark or the like to turn cut into a bug type move. Cut is not a strong base power move so it just goes to show how ridiculous these mons would be if they had access to any bug type move at all.
These are my favorite runs -- Pokemon we would never, ever use or think about. Well done, JRose!

Before watching, I just wanna say that this has always been my favourite pokémon ever since gen 1 when I was 3 years old, so this is a big day for me! :D

Venomoth is one of my favourite pokémon aswell, and I was actually baffled that I hadn't used it in any run yet - turns out this is very easy to explain since I just realized that aside from Kanto/Johto, it literally never was available before the national dex until *finally* Scarlet/Violet. What a shame.

Tbf, there are a lot of early route bug pokemon that have cooler evolutions, so I don't think it's that much of a shame, but it would be nice if they gave Venonat something nice soon. Like a branched evolution or even a third one that resembles the first stage a little more :)

Absolutely miserable run though. That string of bad luck on the Sabrina and Blaine attempts hurt (not even counting the champion and Brock). I think Venomoth will be shockingly good too, so here's hoping!
I think this is the first time in my life that I've seen Venonat's back sprite, and I played Red as a kid when it came out! Thank you JRose for the hours of frustrating entertainment and showing us everything we missed in this great game of all our childhoods.

sabrina's battle was hard bc you forgot about compounding chance:
-> 1/2 chance for kadabra to use psybeam
-> 3/4 chance for your attack to hit
-> 9/10 chance for psybeam not to confuse you
-> 159/200 chance for no enemy crit
-> 255/256 chance for no gen 1 miss on your part
+ sth difficult to calculate like instant wake ups with you missing afterwards and so on
+ you messing up lol
that's a 26.7...% chance of your plan working. at best. against kadabra. alakazam is obviously much harder due to higher crit rate and overall more things being able to go wrong due to the longer battle. and dont forget that these are just chances. it's perfectly possible to not work out 100 times in a row. but even if we could expect to try 3 times and it definietly working out the 4th time, you messing up that 4th time means it'll definitely take 8 attempts. and if that 8th attempt happens to be the one where alakazam doesnt play along, then we're at 12 attempts. kadabra waking up early and you missing? 16 attempts. messed up again? 20 attempts.
obviously this last part wasnt very mathematical at all, but considering you tend to mess up more often when games take long during tedious parts, this whole sabrina battle wasnt AS improbable as you probably wouldve thought.
ps: old games have garbage rng. you couldve entirely been caught in a loop there or at any other spot, happened to me tons of times, too
I know that it was very frustrating to play, but I don’t think it was overly unlucky? Needing to sleep powder 5 of the rival’s pokemon, plus avoiding them waking up too early, crits, and other rng like leer, I think the strategy was just doomed to be miserable. Maybe at level 90 or something it’d be more consistent, but that’s also a huge time sink.
This is basically "if Weedle/Caterpie had actual moves".
Leech Life being useful was the last thing I expected, nice job; I wouldn't have thought of it.
I feel like most of gen 1 is designed to teach you to play Pokemon games and Weedle/Caterpie are meant to teach you to evolve cuz in early game Beedrill and Butterfree slay. But then again, in the whole game metapod and kakuna are trash which might make you second guess evolving. So. Idk. Good talk, bro 😅
In the future, if another Pokémon takes a long time on Brock it would be cool to have the Mewtwo run play in the corner to show have far it progressed in the same time

I always kind of cheer for Leech Life to stay up until the end, it is a bad move overall, but considering the lack of bug moves and how it's not often bug types get stab, it feels nice to see it until the end, like cheering for the underdog to overperform.
Always love getting to Elite Four and seeing over 20 minutes left on the video xD

I think he records so many of these that there's a backlog so then his later commentary is kinda reacting to moments he doesn't fully remember

Ah. As a kid I wouldn’t even bother catching a Venonat because I thought it was useless. When Fire Red/Leaf Green came out I decided I was going to try a team of Pokémon I hadn’t used before, and ended up falling in love with 3 of the “useless” Pokémon I spent years neglecting.
I still have a soft spot for Cloyster and Exeggutor, but Venomoth has been on every team I’ve used since then. This video brought back so many happy memories.
Tried this challenge in Yellow and even that took me ages before the first gym and until the mid 90s to beat the game, I can’t imagine how hard red/blue will be

Disable has a 55% chance to hit. Foes with 2 moves 27.5% chance to disable the intended move. 3 moves? 18.3%. 4 moves? 13.75%. X Accuracy makes it 50%, 33.3%, and 25% respectively.
We're about halfway there to 151.

This is such a cool series. A little late in the game- but you should do a randomizer at the end of each video to choose which one you do the next run with (depending how far ahead you are compared to the videos that are released I suppose). That would give it another layer of excitement and challenge!

I found Venomoth to be surprisingly good (at least for what I was expecting) but Venonat is a very rough time

I think Weedle is on there because theoretically it could have beaten the game, but Magikarp etc. can't damage ghost types so there was no possibility they could win

Reason I ask, I watch your runs quite often, I go back and watch them and often I fall asleep watching them, and I have an OLED TV so the fixed pictures would leave burn on on my TV over time. Recently I used a Venonat/Venomoth on my team in Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu. I named her Verona and tbh she wasn't my first pick. I was going to use Mr Mime as my go to for Poison types but unfortunately in Gen 8 Mr Mime is part Fairy type so he gets one shot by sludge bomb that surprisingly a lot of trainers with poison types have. Verona actually remained on my team till the end of the elite 4. She was kind of out classed by some of my other Pokemon but I did rely on her to defeat two of my Rivals team. If you are using a Venomoth in a team run it could be a valuable Pokemon and I was surprised by how much I used Verona. Verona's psychic took out any poison type and her sludge bomb took out any psychic type she was faster than which seemed to be every family except the Abra family, and it was a good answer for fairy types.
Man, could you imagine how different this run would be with the version of Leech Life in the newer era games where it has way more base power (if I recall it has 80 instead of gen 1’s 20 base power)?
The Brock section would still have been suffering, but the improved Leech Life would basically be the “Body Slam” this run needed until getting Psychic.
I for one am entirely in favor of referring to that Hiker by his FR/LG name.
Considering his tendency to make his pokemon explode, Dudley is a pretty apt name.
This should be a interesting run. I honestly might have took Psybeam over Psychic here just to for the confusion as well not many moves it can have . Iam interested again to see what you come up with to win again
It's equal parts amusing and frustrating seeing jrose slip into his younger self's 'gotta do absolutely minimum battles with this pre evolved pokemon as if it's mewtwo' and the game's RNG going 'how many times do I have to teach you this lesson!?' in being utterly pitiless.

I wonder if they got rid of bug being super effective against poison because in Gen 2 steel and dark types came in - and poison doesn't affect steel, and bug is super effective against dark. So they kept the same number of strengths and weaknesses.
I got it randomly for my current run and I must say I love it. Except for boosting moves, it's full of resources and its design is great, so even with the hassle of defeating Brock, I think I'll enjoy this one.

Venonat is a rather underpowered Pokémon for how late it’s available.
Still one of only 2 bugs that can evolve this gen and actually beat the game

It's hilarious that the Leech Life spam on the Selfdestruct Hiker's Graveler was useless - Venonat was living on 1 HP anyway.
