I love what you do for us Jrose, thank you for entertaining me for multiple years of my life with these runs. You and anyone who helps you makes amazing content and it's appreciated
Anecdote: magmar is one of the two pokemon that can exploit the confusion/counter glitch, where using counter on the same turn an opponent hurts itself will do double the self-inflicted damage. It's just the way counter works, but the only other pokemon that learns confuse ray & counter is gengar (haunter can't learn counter). Not a lot of applications for it tbh, but it does make magmar more viable on "no offensive moves" playthroughs, compared to the alternative, ninetales, who can learn confuse ray, but not counter
The oddest thing about this "assurance" interaction is that it almost seems intentional. After all, gengar can't even be hit by normal or fighting types, which are the only types of attacks counter can actually counter in RBY. So despite being able to learn it, the only way Gengar can actually use it, is on a confused foe who hurts themselves
To be fair, it's pokémon. Umbreon learns synchronoise, genderless pokémon learn attract, and soft-boiled was made a TM instead of Flamethrower instead of Chansey just learning the move by level-up.@@bitterzombie
@@youtube-kit9450This implies that Chansey did not evolve to eat it own egg, rather humans forced it through tm’s to engage in this behavior. Very morbid lol
I'm totally okay with Magmar going above weezing. That run, even with Lance at the end, felt much easier overall than Weezing did just from the video. Even without Psychic, I honestly would have said there's a case for Magmar to still go above weezing because it only struggled with 2 or 3 battles.
Psychic(the move, not type) is only really overpowered due to the special drop. In runs relying on outspeeding and 1/2 shotting your foes this doesn't come into play too often. Also don't forget the lack of STAB which actually makes a big difference on high base power moves like Psychic.
@@Owlr4ider Yup early pokemon especially really boils down to two things. Are you faster than the enemy, and can you kill it in one or two turns. If your faster you can kill enemies before they have a chance to damage or status you. If you can kill things within two turns and are faster than them you effectively only get hit once. It's basically made nearly all other pokemon stats useless as defense, HP, etc rarely ever makes a difference. Just want to comment that this video really shows off how good you're getting at navigating pokemon in 4x speed. Jrose11 does not miss on videos and he does not miss doors 15 times
The side-by-side comparison of runs made for a very interesting video. I was surprised how little difference Psychic made until I remembered that not very effective Fire Blast (120/2 then 1.5x for STAB = 90) has the same base power as a neutral Psychic. Obviously Psychic still helps by being more reliable, having the chance to drop special, and giving you more PP, but its benefits are a lot more situational than I initially thought.
Indeed. Psychic really was mostly helpful against Koga and the other super effective pokemon in the mid game. By the time he reached bruno, bruno's pokemon were already a joke to flamethrower let alone psychic or fireblast.
Since there was a detour to clear some of Koga's trainers, I wonder if full clearing Celadon Gym for the experience would have helped. Ember could make short work of Erika's trainers and probably not cost too much time.
Early training doesn't matter much in the long run. Low-level‚ not fully evolved Pokémon just give so little XP compared even to Victory Road wild Pokémon.
Literally the whole reason for using magmar over the other fire types is because of psychic. It still doesn't change how terrible fire types are in red/blue though.
@@HylianWindRider That's another example. Articuno naturally get's Ice Beam and Blizzard, Zapdos gets ThunderShock (not bolt, also odd) and Thunder, Moltres get's Fire Spin and Fire Blast. Also A gets Mist, Z gets Light Screen, and M get's Leer... They really hate fire in Gen 1

Good to see a Jrose video again after all this time 😁 Lance's Gyarados is such a massive WALL for fire-types. I have been doing a few fire-type runs myself at this point and I can't state enough how bad that battle is. 1. You either need to be really lucky and hope that Hydro Pump misses at least twice, and that the HP range does not go below the treshold for Lance to use Hyper Potions. 2. You need to be at such a high level that one of your moves can knock it out in two hits, and that you have enough HP to survive even a critical hit. 3. Pray that you don't get any misses. My two fire type runs are the following: Ninetales - Ended up at level 68, with a time of 3:23, and a moveset comprised of Fire Blast, Body Slam, Mimic and Dig. Lance was not that big of a problem for Ninetales due to its high Special stat, and ability to withstand Hydro Pump. Growlithe - Ended up at level 83! with a time of 6:53, and a moveset comprised of Flamethrower, Body Slam, Mimic and Dig. Lance proved extremely difficult, but once I got past his Gyarados, the run was essentially over. Now, I have been asking for a while about this, but is there a possibility that you could rank Dewgong? I think this one will surprise you. I re-ranked it recently, and got within striking distance of Mewtwo (by two minutes of game-time)
I did several of these in Yellow. Ninetales was my fastest run overall (5:37) and still had quite a few issues overall. It beat out Vaporeon (5:44). Obviously, Jolteon was dead last for evolved dogs (9:40)

Jrose, I love this series of videos, I love what you're doing and I hope you have smooth sailing to getting a run for every gen 1 pokemon! Also, it really seems some games really discriminate certain types.
When I was a kid I liked Mega Punch? Probably because of the name? Even though the accuracy is garbage. But this reminded me of when I discovered Body Slam. I always hated recoil moves and I guess I just lumped Take Down, Double-Edge and Body Slam together because they were high power normal type moves that I thought all had recoil damage. Then one day I noticed that Body Slam paralyzes and doesn't have recoil and I was just like "😵...Why do those other moves even exist?!?"
Krabby, Kingler, Lickitung, and of course Mew, can learn cut surf and strength each. This means you can finish the game with truly no other Pokémon. I wonder how fast this could be done.
@@wadespencer3623 strength is not great but it does the job well enough. The two types combined also hit everything for neutral in gen 1 afaik. You still get room for body slam or one more coverage move if necessary
@@FadedPhoenixYT yes TMs are permanently deleted and also there is no move remover in gen 1 so you can't delete HMs. I am specifically curious how much slower this would be since it would be a "true" solo Pokémon run.
@@niikasd There is one way of getting rid of HM moves in Gen I. The Daycare will remove the first move when a Pokémon levels up and learns a new move. If that move is an HM then it gets deleted. It’s limited, but besides cheat codes, it’s the only way to get rid of HM moves in Gen I.
This is a weird thing to like, I don't love pokemon enough to be watching this. But man, you are a legend. This is a good series and you a great personality! keep up the good work brother 💚
I often think about how bemused the Elite Four must be to see this kid turning up over and over again, deploying just one Pokemon each time and bumping into all the walls on his way out.
Second run is absolutely the correct decision in this case. So many Pokémon would have done worse if you forgot to use a decent coverage move. Mistakes happen but the second run with psychic feels like a better reflection of how magmar would perform.
I know people will be like "but Squirtle with badge boost glitch", but the difference there was that this run was an oversight that Magmar can even learn Psychic, while the Badge Boost Glitch was very poorly understood at all when the series started and Squirtle happened.
I actually love the "not using psychic" vs. "using psychic" of this run. Made this one of the most interesting gen 1 runs imo. It would be kind of cool to go back and try some other pokemon without a move or two to see how much changes it (porbably some of the better ones, maybe zapdos without thunder or something) also would be cool to revisit old runs and see if your current knowledge of routing and strategies improve their runs by a significant margin
I would really love for you to do a challenge where you have to play the fights as if you were having "good AI", so you have to be very careful about what moves to teach when etc
Oh man, I had no clue that Magmar's (and thus Electabuzz) stats were so... mediocre. I've always though it was on a par with starters final evolutions or perhaps even slightly higher - and it's the same as Tangela's
You know LTT is fked up as a creator when a pokemon challenge run youtuber does a difficult run a 2nd TIME to test the optimal correct path and doesn't gaslight people into thinking it would've been useless. You deserve so many more subs
Gotta say, I’d love to see you revisit a few runs (with zero urgency, 151+missingno is already a lot of Gen 1) with major slipups (like the Paras run), or areas where you suspect there’s room to route better, and discuss how optimization changes the run. Maybe even see if there’s enough of a difference to merit reconsideration of any of the tiers. Seeing this evaluation postmortem for both runs and your thought process is fascinating.
You the man jrose 🤙 crystal playthrough with magmar would be class. Appreciate the hours you put in too, especially gen 2&3...you're tough 🤝 p.s. crystal is the best pokemon game ✌️

Krabby, Kingler, Lickitung, and of course Mew, can learn cut surf and strength each.
This means you can finish the game with truly no other Pokémon.
I wonder how fast this could be done.
Would probably take a lot longer, given of those, only surf is a good move.
@@wadespencer3623 strength is not great but it does the job well enough.
The two types combined also hit everything for neutral in gen 1 afaik. You still get room for body slam or one more coverage move if necessary
But then you'd have just one other move slot, and moves are permanently deleted in this game iirc
@@FadedPhoenixYT yes TMs are permanently deleted and also there is no move remover in gen 1 so you can't delete HMs.
I am specifically curious how much slower this would be since it would be a "true" solo Pokémon run.
@@niikasd
There is one way of getting rid of HM moves in Gen I.
@@raineob4996Yes.. BUT.... Squirtle with Withdraw... and Slowpoke with Earthquake.... and Starmie with Harden.
Love the run brotha 🎉
Anytime you post, I know my week is going to be a good week. Thank you for everything!
A like and comment for the algorithm! I love Magmar, he was one of my all times faves from gen one 🧡
Thank you Jrose! So cant wait to watch. Dont even care you messed up,just happy.
Hopefully were alright. Stay safe
YES!!!!!!! my notifications have actually alerted me to something i'd like for once!!!!!
I can't wait to see the other runs you have in store, JRose!
4:49 yooo stardew valley reference!!!
Dammit it brother you always come in clutch !
Glad to see you back man
“I have a lot of videos ready to come out, so hopefully you’ll watch all of them…”
Man try to STOP us from watching all of them!!
"I think were very very close." *checks video time and sees 15 minutes left*
Once again thank you for uploading!
first time ever catching a new video of yours! one of my favorite tubers
"Ideally we one shot Staryu: and we Star-do... Valley? I don't know" got me lol
Dude you are my favorite Pokemon TH-camr, keep the great content going up 👌🏻🇨🇴 greetings from Colombia
YAY another Jrose video.......seems like i've been waiting MONTHS! lol Glad to see ya still making Pokemon content, your the best Jrose :)
Magmar has one of the best color pallets in gen 1, so I knew you would have fun making the pallet for the video.
37:18 I yelled NOOOOOOOOOOOOO hahaha you are one persistent fella
I put my earphones in and fall asleep to this. Running thru my childhood games with crazy rules!
Lance's Gyarados is the only thing stopping Fire types from ranking highet in this list.
Well... not the ONLY thing...
@@DJFracusYeah, Rock types are a thing, but they can be beaten thanks to their awful Special.
I think you should explain Bayes' theorem next to the badge boost glitch in every video description.
I think I look forward to your videos more than anyone else's 😅
Yup, so much better than watching that MDB
It brightens my day when you upload a new video!
I would really love for you to do a challenge where you have to play the fights as if you were having "good AI", so you have to be very careful about what moves to teach when etc
really excited about seeing the "150" vids, guess it's already down to 149 since the nido combo but still can't wait to see them all !
10:46 “and it goes for withdraw”
Game: “Blastoise is fully paralyzed”
Oh man, I had no clue that Magmar's (and thus Electabuzz) stats were so... mediocre. I've always though it was on a par with starters final evolutions or perhaps even slightly higher - and it's the same as Tangela's
happy to see another of your awesome videos :)
This Magmar run gets the OG Bug Catcher official stamp of approval! 👍
Whooo! Time to chill and get cozy. I love watching your vids before bed.❤
You know LTT is fked up as a creator when a pokemon challenge run youtuber does a difficult run a 2nd TIME to test the optimal correct path and doesn't gaslight people into thinking it would've been useless. You deserve so many more subs
LTT??
I Alway get that Saturday morning little kid watching cartoons feel when I see your uploads...thank you for your efforts... Sandslash for life
Brutal on psychic, was waiting for it and it never came until the explanation.
Finally, a Pokemon video with a Pokemon of culture behind it. I freaking love Magmar.
Magmar one of my favorite gen 1 mons, the battle against Magmar and Charizard during Blaines gym battle is one og my favorite episode of the anime
I just got outta BMT and I’m so glad to be back and see JRose uploaded!!
I haven’t even watched the video yet and I’m already laughing at the thumbnail. “I messed up” lmao
Jonathan, love the videos. Keep them up!
The Stardew Valley joke was so pathetic that it actually made me laugh. Good video Jrose!
