I am loving this transformation arc of Jrose going from pokemon entertainer to pokemon entertainer AND mentor! The fact that he chose pokemon that could be guaranteed is a really cool thing to do for those who wish to follow up on his run with one of their own and works as an awesome guide. The anecdotes of situations he has encountered as well is a nice touch. I dont know what his ultimate career goals are but I feel like he'd be a great professor. Thanks again for the video!
Does anyone else hate these whole, "optimized nuzlocke runs"? I feel like it misses the entire point of the challenge: to use pokemon you wouldn't otherwise use and to develop a bond between your pokemon, since there's actual stakes with them. This whole "make sure you capture X pokemon in Y route so that you can easily sweep this gym leader, and then make sure you get X pokemon in this route specifically so you can get a guaranteed pokemon in this place so you can evolve it to a specific form for later." It just makes me sad, they aren't even nicknaming their pokemon. If they wanna play this way that's fine, but this just isn't for me. It perverses the nuzlocke into just another video game challenge, like beating dark souls with a guitar hero controller, or doing a randomizer. It just takes out all the soul.
The unfortunate thing with Sneasel is it can't take advantage of its stab types, similar to Gengar and a bunch of other gen 1-3 Pokemon. I'm still shocked that Ghost was physical and dark was special, when most of those Pokemon felt like they were the opposite specialty, with exceptions like Houndoom and Banette. The moves themselves almost felt like they should have been the opposite split (Ghost having Shadow Ball, and every single attacking Dark type move from gens 1-3 are now physical).
I'm guessing that this is going to be very difficult, simply because of GSC's awful level scaling, You basically need to get 7 badges before passing Lv 30!
Once did a swap and drop run for HGSS (once a Pokémon has been in a gym battle you can't reuse it) and it made me realise how valuable a lot of weaker Pokemon are in that game.
Crystal was my first and only (hardcore) nuzlocke. It was pretty easy for the most part but eventually i got so sick of grinding XP that i just went and wiped to Clair in my early 30s Definitely not for me but still fun to watch
I hated it when they added the day/night system in Gen 2 and I didn't knew how to change it. Being a pawn of society I could only play when I reach home and that would be night so I played almost the entire game in night mode.
Key part to hardcore nuzlockes is what you said: find your win conditions (win cons). What matchups will give you the least amount of resistance, what back ups do you have to cover that, what are the LOSING cons for the boss battles and how do you avoid them
Definitely prefer the level cap ending at the START of a gym battle, so if I level past the cap DURING the battle, it still is all good and can continue to be used.
I have a few variations to nuzlockes that I think are laregly in keeping with the rules and spirit of the run, but one biggie specific to Gen 2 runs: Sacred Ash. As Ho-oh canonically revives the dead, the Sacred Ash is a full resurrection item, usuable on a single Pokemon. As exploits are typically not permitted, there's no duplicating it. It's a get out of jail free card, but it's the only one you get. If you REALLY want to be lore specifc, it may be used on a total of 3, but for the leniency it grants already, restricting it to one seems the most reasonable.
Jrose I apologize I never watch any of these videos all the way through I listen to them as I fall asleep most nights but I promise we know how hard you work and appreciate you keep grinding my friend
I would love to see future nuzlocke runs from you. It'd be really cool to see you break down your thought processes for difficult trainers like this in other games. There's a whole world of ROM hacks that I think it would be really enjoyable to see you play through that have become challenge runs all by themselves. I don't think that many people on youtube have done these games either. Basically just pChal.
Honestly, gen 2 is so easy, I can probably wing a lot of the fights if I can think of a good strategy. I played a hardcore nuzlocke a year or 2 ago and won without any deaths, but I quit without fighting red because it’s just too much E4 grinding. I played with level caps, but it may not be necessary
Coming here to say I’m loving your nuzlocke series, yeah super hard technical runs are cool every once in a while but if you’re looking up every trainers team in advance what is the point in even playing. Very refreshing my fren keep it up
Heads up, generally in Hardcore Nuzlockes you are still allowed you use over leveled pokemon. The generally accepted rule is you have start the battle within the level range, so a lot of players "edge" and keep their best Pokemon one battle from evolving to try and have a slight edge on the leader. Just wanted to point this out since I wasn't sure if you not using your lvl 10 Totadile was a misinterpretation of the rules or self imposed.
I really appreciate the different pokemon used here and also the under leveling. I would have liked to hear and maybe see more of the failed attempts too but that is maybe out of scope for this video.
I have yet to finish a hardcore, but that's because I tend to make mistakes while training. I also play at regular speed, so things do take as long as they should while I do it.
I'm wondering if it's viable to save Shadow Ball for Snorlax for late game. He learns it, you can Curse and Rest with a Mint Berry. Just a thought I had while watching. Great work as always!
Weird take on the Janine level cap. I don't think I've ever seen anyone actually do that before. Most people I've talked to usually just set the Kanto level cap at Blue's ace, since you can do them in almost any order, and most have around the same level teams.
Alakazam with Psychic & the Elemental punches is definitely OP! I mean your personal fav is a mid-stage evolution & eats Lance for breakfast with this combo...
i really love that you don't get your mons up to just about to level up before fighting the gym leader. I always thought that was dumb when other nuzlockers would end up using a mon that is 1-2 levels higher than the gym leader's ace because it technically wasn't at the start at the match
I agree that its not dumb. But its definitely a cheap way to bypass the level cap which they have set. And it artifically raises the stakes (which I might add some of the nuzlockers love to hype the viewers up about). Though at the end of the day, to quote pokemon challenges, "Play your challenge runs however you think they are the most fun for you." We should not be calling them dumb because of some self-imposed rules, but I think there is merit in knowing when some of these nuzlockers are artifically raising the stakes to make a run seem more impressive than it really is.
@@2n3j1h2 that is definitely fair as well. I think there's some fun strategy with "edging" (as some call it), especially in some harder nuzlocke challenges and rom hacks, but it definitely does make it easier to be higher level than the gym leader, even if it happens halfway through the battle
@@2n3j1h2 yeah why even set a cap if you are allowed to fight the gym over the cap lol. it really doesnt matter THAT much, but the rule seems pretty arbitrary when it goes over. i suppose you could argue that requiring the team t be underleved also doesnt make any sense, just a bit more difficult for no reason, and we are really just arguing semantics at this point lol

Love that the final battle was mano a mano. I always try to do that with my teams and major 6v6 battles
The most fun I ever had in a nuzlocke was a hard-core silver trashlocke (any pokemon with over 400 base stats banned).
All I can say is thank God for Kadabra
I felt that Goldeen shade in my soul at 3:48
One of the few legitimately terrible pokemon
I was a part of this experience Josh. I'm loving the month of Jrose
You dont even need to worry about Whitneys miltank. Just get TM 28 - Dig from the National Park. Rollout will never hit more than once, and thus will never gain power
40:18 - EVOLVE THAT PUPPY! Both funny and informative at the same time 😂
It seems you really do need to know these games inside and out to have any real hope in these nuzlockes. No point going in blind as you will have no working strategy. Looks fun though
The harder the Nuzlocke, the funner it is.
Every one of these videos this month have been amazing! Thank you for your hard work - I’ll be rewatching these forever!!
Gen 2 was so good. The best generation in my opinion.
Amazing soundtracks while playing the game
Clefairy place, route 1 route 3, radio tower
Why didn't hoenn have stuff this fire
It had graphics
Gen 2 is easy btw just start totodile or level up a geodude n always start NIGHTTIME, day encounters suck besides spearow and caterpie
You also have chance at psyduck in azalea avoid the worthless sandshrew n hoppip
The ONLY ENCOUNTERS that benefit day is west of ecruteak and national park bug catching contest
Everything else IS BETTER NIGHTTIME
@@nautgamingnautgaming9949 video game music is generally trash. I find most people that enjoy video game music are degenerate weebs that also like anime music.
@@nautgamingnautgaming9949 geodude and Ghastly from sprout tower. And you've got two Mons for the whole distance. Daytime starts definitely leave you a little short
my guy pumping out these challenges everyday like its nothing
I always play with a gift clause and do not consider gifts like Odd Egg and Eevee as encounters because they are not encounters in my eyes. These options just make sense to me.
27:22 explains Seal learns icebeam at 37 and dewgong at 40. Has a dewgong at 37 with icebeam. Assuming maybe seal learns it at 36 and 37 was the target level that you can, at the earliest, have a dewgong with icebeam?
Seel levels up to 37, learns ice beam upon level up, then evolves after the battle. Dewgong ice beam at lvl 37.
@@Sailman202 misheard. Watched it again. Did not know that it was level 34 that seel could evolve
I know you had to edit all these vids wayyy in advance but its still insane to see so many high quality jrose vids back to back to back!
I would love to see this series continue to later generations, even if you're not as familiar with them 🙏🏻
I’m loving the theses from the prospective from jrose I love the way this man comes up with out of the box strategies
Have you seen any other nuzlocke vidoes?
I really love the gen 2 videos. I came into the scene with pokemon silver so seeing these runs is definitely nostalgic
Man I’m gonna miss my daily Jrose dopamine hit once this marathon is over
I love how Jrose uses Rage, even though he constantly says how bad it is. (I know it was changed in Gen 2)
Rage is good in the early game of Gen II when most Pokémon know only weak moves. What made it bad in Gen I was that it locked its user into using it.
*Thanks for all your hard work and dedication to Pokemon and your fans much love and may you catch them all my friend*
I'm guessing that this is going to be very difficult, simply because of GSC's awful level scaling, You basically need to get 7 badges before passing Lv 30!
Awful? The level scaling is GREAT especially when youre doing a six members team and changing your members constantly
The 2nd half fire type is such a plot twist oh my goodness gracious im so happy
Once did a swap and drop run for HGSS (once a Pokémon has been in a gym battle you can't reuse it) and it made me realise how valuable a lot of weaker Pokemon are in that game.
It's been an Absolute treat to have one of these new each evening to wind down with as i smoke a little smoke and get ready for bed.
😄👍
You actually do geta. Repel in crystal version before Union cave. Use it to go through and come back with surf later and get the Lapras
Crystal was my first and only (hardcore) nuzlocke. It was pretty easy for the most part but eventually i got so sick of grinding XP that i just went and wiped to Clair in my early 30s
Definitely not for me but still fun to watch
I hated it when they added the day/night system in Gen 2 and I didn't knew how to change it. Being a pawn of society I could only play when I reach home and that would be night so I played almost the entire game in night mode.
They were really hoping people would just be carrying their game boy on them 24/7 😂
Any chance we get a montage of your losses on this run? Curious what areas were trickiest for you
Key part to hardcore nuzlockes is what you said: find your win conditions (win cons).
Jrose, your making me want to do something as consistent and high quality as you do. Thanks for all this content man☆
Neat run & analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
I actually really enjoyed these streams. They were really fun and relaxing to wind down and watch.
Glad I found this channel. These videos have all been very entertaining!
Nice to see many forgotten pokemon actually have a use like magcargo, lantern amd dewgong.
He knows, he just doesn't play that way
I really appreciate the different pokemon used here and also the under leveling.
You may as well go full gen 2 at that point and have Rest, sleep talk, curse, and return.
Weird take on the Janine level cap. I don't think I've ever seen anyone actually do that before. Most people I've talked to usually just set the Kanto level cap at Blue's ace, since you can do them in almost any order, and most have around the same level teams.
Yeah his level cap thing didn’t make sense
The rules here kind of feel super literal.
I would not have believed this run if I didn't see it. As a kid, Red seemed very difficult and worthy of being a final boss.
CINCO BINGOOOOOOO!!!! Love the videos and this entire month has been poggers.
A Pokémon genius and insanely patient/persistent/insane! You’re the man
Hey hey! I watched a week of these attempts on twitch! Thank you for the month of Jrose
It's not dumb but go off
I agree that its not dumb.
@@pawouapproval984 it’s not arbitrary. You start the fight at the same level as the gym leader. Where’s the confusion?
