Focus Energy/Swords Dance/Double Edge (or Slash)/Mimic might sound like an insane moveset, but by using the Focus Energy glitch on purpose you guarantee the Swords Dance boosts stick. Mimic for ghosts.
@@menderbug1 In another comment chain, they said that this only works if after the speed badge boost you're much slower than the opponent, but it's only a 50% reduction. If you're faster instead, it doesn't change anything.
@@CalaveraSancho Slash was still worth to keep just for the champion's Pidgeot; one Swords Dance + Swift doesn't OHKO the Pidgeot, so you're taking three turns to KO it vs. the two that just Slash takes, and you can't afford to give Pidgeot that extra turn as it is doing decent damage with Wing Attack, or could go for Sky Attack turn 1 and then OHKO you on turn 2. Also against Agatha you don't got a good time to setup against her, as the ghosts can confuse or put you to sleep, while Swords Dance + Swift obviously doesn't help at all against them, and the Golbat can confuse, also do decent damage with Wing Attack, or eliminate your Swords Dance and badge boosts with Haze, better to have Slash to OHKO the Golbat and Arbok without any setup to lessen the amount of luck needed in an already very luck dependent fight.
I'd love to see a Seadra video! Just finished a solo run of Seadra in Emerald while watching this (starting as Horsea). Dragon dance and return while holding the silk scarf got me through with only four resets!
Oh my god I knew Gen 1's move pools were bad but WOW I had no idea it was this bad for Scyther, like the Bug/Flying Pokemon literally gets nothing besides Normal type damaging moves, what were the devs even _thinking_ when deciding the move pools for some of these?
Despite the lack of good moves, I really like your creativity with the normal moves you were stuck with. Are you intending to do a SNORLAX run any time soon, because it is my favourite Pokemon and it would be really interesting to watch how a slow Pokemon would perform in these solo runs with a really great movepool but with a lack of special and speed in Gen 1. The lack of speed often times poses a big challenge like the slowpoke or oddish run showed, but if anyone can find creative ideas its cleary our Jrose !
With respect to hyperbeam/substitute - I think you should make exceptions at least for impossible runs, and maybe even some of the more difficult solo runs. I know you avoid any kind of rom racking but possibly make it so you can purchase 500 coins at a time in RB/Y
Ive been binging about one or two of these episodes per day, in no order (yt recommended order?). I love the way you call it like a sports game and it was really accesible to me with no knowledge of pokemon speed runs because you explain things that some people might not know. Thank you!
Honestly, I’d love to make a Red Rebalanced rom hack, which is just good old Gen 1 mechanics, Blue Exclusive mons in the Game Corner and change some of the major boss fights to make them better. Poliwrath with Hypnosis and Gen 1 Amnesia, as well as Primeape, would make Bruno MUCH harder. Removing Agility and Barrier from Lance’s mons would prevent them locking themselves into a useless move with ‘Good’ AI. Misty can have a team that’s easier to confront at such a low level, by removing Bubblebeam from Starmie while giving her a couple of extra Pokémon. Stuff like that.
I think there's a disassembly of Pokered that you can use for your hack, if you decide to do one. If you're using the old binary hacking with hacking tools, editing gym and E4 pokemon movesets is going to be a nightmare.
I would suggest giving his Dragonite Wrap and Blizzard in the remaining slots Also, if you can’t make focus energy do its job, maybe just turn it into an X accuracy
Really cool to see a run through where it wasn’t as import to leverage the badge boost glitch. I saw you level up a couple times and though “oh no”. But it didn’t matter because swords dance was good enough the BBG wasn’t needed.
Reminder: This is the second-strongest bug Pokemon in Gen I competitive. Psychic wasn't even that OP as a type. It's just that the types that were supposed to counter it were screwed over _hard_ in gen I. Edit: For those confused, imagine if X-Scissor and Shadow Ball were in Gen I and the ghost type immunity bug wasn't. Now imagine if Banette was in Gen I. And if Special was split as it was in Gen II. Would Dark or Steel really be necessary in that case?
The counterplay was barely there, but nearly every Psychic type had high Special, and a move that lowers the opponent's Special 1/3 of the time. Good against two types, barely a real weakness. And otherwise, hits everything else besides itself for neutral damage. It's still good.
@@SoraDonaldGoofy99 That's not even mentioning that Special was for Offense and Defense, so it also limited what a lot of non-Psychics could do to hurt them. Anything that ran a Special move was just mostly going for Status... and praying their opponent did not switch to a Starmie or Slowbro when trying to use Fire on Exeggutor. Seriously, you do not want to fight a Burned Starmie.
Ghost types were supposed to be super effective on Psychic, but the game designers messed up and accidentally made Psychic immune to Ghost. So it's an even worse situation than it was supposed to be!
@@iss2075 And then did not really have Ghost moves even if they got the Weakness correct: Lick was incredibly weak, Night Shade was fixed-damage, and Confuse Ray was Status. On top of that, all the Gen1 Ghosts were part Poison, and what types was Poison weak against? Bug, Ground, and, oh, Psychic.
And the best possible bug moves are all very weak and maybe hit multiple times. By part poison types or Jolteon, who doesn't have the best physical attack stat. I think Parasect has leech life? But it's so slow that it'll likely not be worth trying. Idk if I'd call psychic op as a type, but it definitely is broken
The beginning of the Civilian Surge redemption arc. There is just something oddly comforting about these videos that I can't quite figure out but I love all the same.

@@arroaboy7348 Slash has a higher base power than swift but no recoil like double-edge. Simple as that really. I finished the run at level 70, so also fairly high, but I didn’t have to contend with the same issues other than Agatha.
@@tlewtree The coding error I mentioned is actually not the badge boost, it's the focus energy glitch. It's a move designed to increase chance of crit, but in gen 1 it accidentally descreases it I believe. So by using it, slash won't crit ever. or any of his upped sword dance stats
It's gonna be funny when the Charmeleon/Charizard run comes, they learn Swords Dance, Body Slam, Dig and they are fast enough that their Slashes will always crit, so Flamethrower, their signature attack on the anime and others is arguably their worst move since there aren't many Pokémon weak to Fire past Erika.
Flamethrower/Fire Blast is going to be better to have than Slash, they're still stronger immediate moves for Zard than Slash even with its auto-crit (142/180 power vs. 140) and keeps Zard's access to a special move against targets with much worse Special than Defense (e.g. Cloyster), while Slash doesn't really offer much unique utility that is going to help it in any matchup more than Swords Dance + Dig/Earthquake or Body Slam.
@@OmegaTyrant The thing about jrose's runs is that the Pokémon has to win battles quickly and a Charizard using Slash has about the same impact a Swords Dance + Body Slam combo, which take two turns. Charizard also is gonna have to rely on Dig, which is always 2 turns, so jrose will have to find ways to save time.
@@Igorcastrochucre Important trainers have more than one pokemon and Swords Dance + Body Slam/Dig/Earthquake is hitting KO benchmarks that Slash alone doesn't (Zard also learns Earthquake so Dig is irrelevant in the later game), while if you need immediate power, like I said Flamethrower/Fire Blast are still stronger than Slash while offering unique utility. Another thing I forgot to mention, crits ignore your badge boost, so Zard's fire moves are also getting that 12.5% badge boost once Blaine is beaten while Slash gets none, making the gap between them larger.

Brock (needed lvl 15 and pursuit), Blane (omfg i still remember those fire blasts...) and Lorellei (i hate that dewgong!!! hahahaha)... They were my 3 nightmares but i was able to find a way to the victory. The Rival's Pidgeot gave me some trouble too (R5 and R6 with those featherdances and wing attacks) but not that much. I beated the champion at lvl65 (starting at 61 vs Lorellei) and i didin't have to use any rare candies along the run. Agatha was easy and Lance used only dragon rage with his Gyarados, giving me time to set the swords dance, just enought to win. The move Swords Dance totally saved my run! I beated Rival 5 with only 1 HP but 1-shoting everything. xD Final move pool against the elite 4 and champion: Slash ~ Aerial Ace (this one never miss xD) ~ Swords Dance ~ Steel Wing (for the hiker, i mean.. bruno... and against Lance's aerodactyl). I equipped some berries but i could do it without them.

In my opinion, banning double team for being the most effictive method is unfortunate. It reminds me of Karl Jobst's video on Goldeneye 007 Nintendo 64 speedrunning history, wherein runners discovered that the fastest way to complete the game is to stare at the floor the whole time for lag reduction. Is it boring? Of course. But it's technically the fastest. And that an unintended feature like badge boost glitch would be utilized while an intended strategy is disallowed on the grounds that it's very effective is like... darn. You know?
It's different because Goldeneye is a competitive speed game so going faster than everyone else is the primary objective. Here Jrose wants to go fast of course but he's not competing against anyone else. It's a self imposed rule set that he wants to use for these runs to test his own strategies not just spam double team.
I like your outlook on double team. I've watched a few other people do Pokémon runs and they power up their Pokémon so much with so many TM's that they get through battles without trying, it's very boring watch.

With that commentary on the last Agatha battle, you strike me as a man who could make it as an auctioneer.
I think the reason why Scyther learns the same move twice was because i think Sizor(hope i spelled it right) was supposed to be in the game before it got cut
Focus Energy/Swords Dance/Double Edge (or Slash)/Mimic might sound like an insane moveset, but by using the Focus Energy glitch on purpose you guarantee the Swords Dance boosts stick. Mimic for ghosts.
Would that work though? As slashes improved critical hit ratio is based on base speed, isn't it always going to be a crit, regardless of focus energy?
@@michaelnobbs9147 it divides the crit rate by four, so it should result in a 25% crit chance. Then again, this is gen 1 so who knows
@@menderbug1 honestly I think it depends on how the math is calculated. Might try it later
@@michaelnobbs9147 please report here if you do! I'm interested to know how it works
@@menderbug1 In another comment chain, they said that this only works if after the speed badge boost you're much slower than the opponent, but it's only a 50% reduction.
If you're faster instead, it doesn't change anything.
Was just thinking a Jrose video would really make my night more enjoyable, and this gets uploaded. Thanks :)
I have watched every one of these Kanto Challenges, and I can’t wait to watch more.
Slash is a decent normal move but it doesn't work properly with Swords dance so the move pool has that issue as well
Honestly, I'm not sure why Jrose kept slash to the end when swift is superior with buffs...
It could work for reflect users. Even to this day i have problems beating Alakazam from the champion when it uses reflect.
I'd love to see a Seadra video!
Just finished a solo run of Seadra in Emerald while watching this (starting as Horsea). Hard walled in the beginning with only bubble to attack... but smokescreen spam made it work!
Seadra then effortlessly swept the whole game up until Wallace and got walled again.
Sandslash only learns Ground moves from a single use TM and Aerodactyl doesn't learn a single Rock type move
Yea gen one was a mess before fire red remakes
Ratatta can learn blizzard but not ice beam in these games...
Thinking? Oh they weren't doing that
Theres speculation that bug was one of the last types implemented so they simply ran out of time
I'm loving this fast paced upload schedule, good work recently
Despite the lack of good moves, I really like your creativity with the normal moves you were stuck with. Are you intending to do a SNORLAX run any time soon, because it is my favourite Pokemon and it would be really interesting to watch how a slow Pokemon would perform in these solo runs with a really great movepool but with a lack of special and speed in Gen 1. The lack of speed often times poses a big challenge like the slowpoke or oddish run showed, but if anyone can find creative ideas its cleary our Jrose !
Snorlax gets Amnesia, I think it'll be really easy
I'm glad you're uploading more. You're one of my favorite youtubers.
I love how Yellow version only gave Scyther one new move, Wing Attack, at LEVEL FIFTY!
My boy back at it again with heart passion and drive love everything produced by you I love it t here💯
With respect to hyperbeam/substitute - I think you should make exceptions at least for impossible runs, and maybe even some of the more difficult solo runs.
That sounds sick! I'd absolutely play that.
I think there's a disassembly of Pokered that you can use for your hack, if you decide to do one. If you're using the old binary hacking with hacking tools, editing gym and E4 pokemon movesets is going to be a nightmare.
I would suggest giving his Dragonite Wrap and Blizzard in the remaining slots
Also, if you can’t make focus energy do its job, maybe just turn it into an X accuracy
Had a rough night at work and the moment I sit down to watch TH-cam this pops up. Thanks mate. Perfect timing.
Someone needs to do a Mewtwo run for every Gen. would be interesting to see
That's a good question and makes me wonder how mewtwo would fare against one of gen 3's other finest in leafgreen/firered.
Someone? JRose the only one I want to see this doing!
I know ChaoticMeatball did that for FireRed.
Really cool to see a run through where it wasn’t as import to leverage the badge boost glitch. I saw you level up a couple times and though “oh no”. But it didn’t matter because swords dance was good enough the BBG wasn’t needed.
These videos help me zone out when I need to. Oh the nostalgia, and I love your logical approach and how you make the game challenging. Thank you❤
Reminder: This is the second-strongest bug Pokemon in Gen I competitive.
So Civilian Surge has been promoted to recruit Surge.
Or Captain Surge considering he won 7 times.
From civilian to recruit, to assistant manager, to giftshop owner to private, to ensign to Lieutenant to Captain.
I get the chills with your every upload!!!
Lmao scyther’s backsprite looks like a llama
I remember watching this series when covid first hit. Cool to see youre still at it
When I did this run myself I actually used focus energy to remove the crits from slash and it made the run really smooth after lavender.
hahahah. That's a solid exploit of a coding error
Geniune question, why do that as opposed to swift strats? saves you a move slot
@@mattbirnholtz13 true but then slash probably isn’t supposed to crit 100% of the time either and the badge boost glitch is also a coding error 🤷🏻♂️
So by using it, slash won't crit ever. or any of his upped sword dance stats
the scyther on this thumbnail is genuinely the most gorgeous green I have ever seen
So 9/10 times i listen to these videos while playing a game or working out, but im watching as im cook and had to pause 30seconds into the video to say that stat page transition was so smooth, good editing 👌
This is the perfect example of how a Pokemon can have great stats, awesome design, but without a decent move pool, it's a pain to use!
every time Jrose has to explain why he says "rivalfival".
I just think "I was there".
Not even a quarter through the video and this is already a pretty interesting run. I'm curious if you'd consider doing a run with Cradily, maybe in Gen 5 or Gen 6 where it gets Storm Drain as an ability. I feel like it'd be a pretty cool run.
Those generations kinda blow…. I’m not sure if Jrose is interested if it’s later than gen 3. Idk he could sometimes play later generations
@@jameswagoner1460 If those generation are bad, what is gen 1? Turbo-bad?
Gen 5 is leagues above the buggy and unbalanced mess gen 1 was.
@@giulioceresini1435 jank is fun. Gen 1 is Jank city and is specilhically interesting for solo runs because a lot of mechanichs and glitches just aren't there in later games.
The games after gen 1 fixed enought Jank to not be as funny, but also did not fix enought to ne legitimately good. Gen 2 feel 100 times worse to play than gen 1 if you ask me.
I was LITERALLY just thinking to myself like why hasn't JRose11 posted a video since Togepi?? It's been 6days and then BOOM!! Right on time!!! You da GOAT man!!!
Personal prediction before watching. Scyther will probably struggle with the Elite Four. Limited movepool. It does get SD though, which should help.
Would love to see Porygon. Will be like a much worse Staryu.
Porygon will be fun
I'm personally waiting for Farfetch'd and Marowak, because I think they have a chance of dethroning Onix as the worst fully-evolved pokemon
@@tomc.5704 Farfetch'd gets SD and Agility though, which could be potentially quite handy for both badge boosts and just generally sweeping. Agatha would be an issue for Farfetch'd though for sure.
AWWWW YEAAA!!!! I WAS WAITING FOR THIS ONE!!!! I did solo scyther on Leaf Green and it was very nice! I beated Rival 5 with only 1 HP but 1-shoting everything. xD
Final move pool against the elite 4 and champion: Slash ~ Aerial Ace (this one never miss xD) ~ Swords Dance ~ Steel Wing (for the hiker, i mean.. bruno... and against Lance's aerodactyl). I equipped some berries but i could do it without them.
Technically Struggle is classified as Normal Type in every Generation.
It's just that from Gen. 2 onwards it deals typeless damage.
I was actually hoping for a Scyther run after the last video, thank you for always making good videos man!
As soon as you mentioned the move pool and the only attacks causing damage being Normal Moves.
My first thoughts was Ghost Tower and Agatha.
This is going to hurt.
I don't think I've ever seen you lose to Giovanni, ever! That was surprising.
Surprised how long the video is, i expected scyther to be super strong and fast! Any chance we can see a weepinbell run if you haven't done one yet? It's just completely derpy, I'd love to see it lol.
Dude I stay up late just for you, words dont do it justice man but thanks so much for your vids! Trying to get everyone I know to sub, dying for a daily dose when scarlet and violet drop :P
Yesssss
Ready huh lol
Perfect. Just needed to get back to sleep. Good timing Mr. Rose.
Great choice of pokemon today too :)
Never really touched scyther/pinsir since gen1 bugs always seemed so weak, a lot of people found them cool looking at the time but that wasn't enough for me
Seems like they are weak to everything.
Damn I was Really into this video! That first battle against the lottery was Insane!! Your commentary is spot on as always 👌 thank you!!
Scyther on paper looks cool in gen 1. Then you realize it has no STAB and most of its moves are really really shit...
It's so sad honestly.
Everytime I see you uploaded a new video, it makes me smile! Keep it up!
Algorithm boosting comment.
Pinsir having Seismic Toss and not needing to mimic Night Shade will be big value
I'm growing to appreciate your content, Jrose. It's getting a lot better!
I really appreciate your consistent "No Intro, No Outro" policy.
I just love the implication of every one of the single Pokémon runs. Like in this world, this one Scyther is just stronger than every single Pokémon in the world…not just that, it can take every single Pokémon team in the world. Amazing.
“A cut above” is SOO perfect for the scyther video. Maybe the best tagline ever.
The fact that Slash crits make Swords Dance useless cause Gen1 is just insult to injury on top of this awful movepool :D
Thanks for dropping this on my birthday Jrose, awesome present from you before bed!
Saw the movepool at the beggining and thought "i guess the way to go is swords dance and swift....maybe slash if need to defeat fast"
By the end when Jrose was deleting swift for mimic i was in shock thinking "delete double edge, not swift"
Never underestimate the power of swords dance
I can't believe it has been two years or so and still my favourite Gen 1 Pokemon hasn't been done yet! One day Mohawk Fox, one day. :D Amazing work with your engaging banter and explanations by the way, really makes the videos shine!
When the rival actually makes the greatest play I've ever seen him do, using a potion and stalling out burn for the KO. GG
