Thank you Scott for explaining this in such a clear, concise and useful way! I've never been able to understand the videos made by the manufacturer but you've helped me understand it fully and more clearly. Thank you!
Bought the standard a couple of months ago and love it. I use it plugged into my computer to control my plugin based rig in MainStage and it works great. Does exactly what I need it to do, I programmed to have the bottom row to be PC changes to change the presets within MainStage, easy as just setting each preset to receive the bank change 1, 2, 3, 4... respectively and just works. The top row I have set to toggle fx within the presets in real time. It's as simple as adding a virtual button to the MainStage layout, hit it, press assign, and hit it in the controller. Then program the function you want it to do when it is pressed. The 4th button of the top row I have it set to a master tap tempo for all my delays. That uses a MIDI Note, again, assign to the virtual button, asking the function of the virtual button to the master tap tempo of the project. Within the delay plugins, the time you set it to Sync so it syncs up with the master tempo of the project... and it's done... it just works great for me this way. Then to change the color of each button within the computer editor, you are going to need to google the Hexadecimal color that corresponds to the RGB color you want it to be, there's a box that takes that 6 digit code and it's good to go.
I find the color assigned only changes while the button is pressed. When its released it goes back to the default color of the preset you used and I cant figure out a way to change those.....
@@victorangelo6514 That's odd, you need to setup the color as a hexadecimal code, so look up the color and RGB tone you want like Hexadecimal code Purple and you should get a 6 digit code that you can punch into the text edit editor for the button menu. Why it goes back? I have no idea.. it should stay only that color.
I bought a midi captain a little while ago and figured out how to program the bottom row of buttons to select presets on my hxstomp xl and the top row selects snapshots.
Man, I can't believe how much knowledge you continue to gain and then explain to someone like me... and if I don't understand you have a video getting right down to the basics of what and why. I love it! Thanks man. I also love Fat burger but Five guys has the best burgers.
Hi Scott, I bought the Midi Captain Standard a couple months ago. Wilson suggested that since I already have the CME stuff. Anyway in comunicating back and forth with Wilson I suggested he contact you. I may not have been the only one. I am glaad to see he did. When I recieved it and did some programming I fell in love with this unit. I use it with batteries and the WIDI Jack to remotely control my HX Stomp. When I recieved it and did some programming I fell in love with this unit. Five guys has the best burgers, oh wait I already have one...
Oh nice! Well thank you for sending him my way! Yeah, that’s who messaged me about demoing this. I really appreciate you sending him my way. Thanks a bunch 🤘🤘
Glad the scammers didn’t keep you down. Always love your content. I’ve learned a ton, most recently that Five Guys has the best burgers. Your knowledge surpasses the realm of music tech and has extended to the world of fast food. I’m here for it.
Hey Scott, I have this unit and I thought I would share a tip about the expression pedal and MIDI. My expression pedal Hotone Ampero Press does not move smooth from 0 to 127 on the display and this is because it is the wrong polarity. You cannot select the polarity on this device. The Paint Audio Expression Pedal has 2 output jacks for TRS (Tip Ring Sleeve) and RTS (Ring Tip Sleeve). I solved the issue by making a TRS crossover cable - TRS to RTS and the expression pedal is now smooth. I saw in the video that the expression pedal you used does the same thing
I got one of these through your link, and love it! I did my first gig with the Line 6 HX Stomp and I am a digital convert. Five Guys Have the Best Burgers
BTW, very impressive. I had a MeloAudio one, and without your video I would think the MIDI Captain is just a spin-off because MeloAudio apparently wanted to sell a batch of gear without adding any kind of support or updates and their product end up with a half-baked solution with cool things but, very very very limited
I’ve got the Meloaudio one too and without snapshot mode it’s nearly useless. There’s a firmware for it supposedly but I can’t find it anywhere else and their support page is down.
Nice to see that the midi controller segment is evolving. This is a pretty cool little device. This allows med to put my HX Stomp on a stand to make adjustments without bending down, and leave the Midi Captain in the floor using the wireless option. A great and flexible solution., Great video .. Keep up the good work Scott !!! Kind regards Nils
Thanks for that in depth tut bro. I see that the midii mate wireless is out of stock at the mo. You reckon the Roland WM-1 Wireless MIDI Adaptor could suffice?
Hey Scott - Great review of the Midi Captain. The flow is smooth and to the point. I was on the prowl for an inexpensive controller for Neural DSP plugin control and ended up buying a m-vave 4 button blue tooth unit. It is programable but with limited flexibility. I use MTP to jazz it up a lot. It was cheap but after watching your review of the Midi Captain I'm fairly certain that I'll be ordering one soon. There's no such thing as too many midi foot controllers. I'm old, retired and don't play out anymore but the Midi Captain could replace the FCB-1010 when it comes to portability and it appears to offer extensive programability in Geek mode. You've got a great channel and your presentation style indicates your devotion to the genre. Good stuff man.....
nice job Scott.. thanks! I got this MIDI Captain a few months ago and I was going to use it in conjunction with another MIDI foot controller to help with running Logic for backing track playbacks along with controlling some vocal FX within X32.. but the need for this never materialized so since then it's gathered dust.. until today when I saw your tutorial video.. this little thing is a beast.. wow! I wouldn't doubt it could handle all the duties I had in mind.
I've been eyeing a MIDI foot switch so thank you for taking the time to review this awesome piece of hardware. Four Guys used to have the best burgers, but then they were 1-up'd and now Five Guys has the best burgers.
I just found out about this pedal and missed the giveaway :( But this pedal looks perfect for what I need: a fully programable MIDI footcontroller that is not too expensive like the Morningstar units, this is on the bracket of the FCB1010 that I currently have and want to change because is too big heavy and hard to program, this also works as it should unlike the very limited units by Meloaudio, the only issue is that they don't have distributors in Europe, I live in Spain and not even Amazon Europe sell this, neither Thomann, I found some resellers on Aliexpress but I'm wondering if they're legit, Also, the Time Engine would be great if it can sync to MIDI clock
can i connect it with just 1 USB-cable to my iPad for switching Loopy Pro and USB-Power at the same time? And the 10 Presets meaning you have 10 times 8 buttons + up and down? thank you !
Midi CLock Sync issue! Ive connected the Captain via USB into mac. Geek mode. Set the midi thru option to [ON] within the USB GEEK mode. When sending midi clock info out of ableton to the midi captain, then connecting a midi cable from the Captain's midi O/P to the Boss GT-1000 core's midi input, the tempo fluctuates and never stays still on the actual tempo... ANy help on this?
This seems like an awesome, fully functional, cheaper alternative to the morningstar mc8. I wish I knew about this paint audio pedal before buying the hotone ampero controller as my cheaper alternative 😂 This pedal is only $50 more than that, with way more options! Bing a west coaster at heart, my allegiance lies with In N Out, but this one time I will admit that Five Guys has the best burgers 😀 Great video as always Scott!
Damn I love your channel. Your application of the extra bells and whistles of modern guitar equipment is next level!!!! Five guys has the best burgers.
Pretty cool device. Thanks for the great review, Scott. I re-watched your WIDI Master video a couple of days ago. I was considering getting 2 sets of them for connecting my Ampero Control to my XR18. For a just a little more, I could get this device and a MIDI Mate. The Ampero Control is a nicely featured, inexpensive, expandable foot switch, but its programming app is not so great. I really like that the MIDI Captain can be programmed without an app. Perhaps I might win it! So, "Five guys has the best burgers"!
Hey Scott! Would you please consider making a video about programming the Midi Captain in Super Mode? I'm especially wanting to learn how to send different CC commands when single press, double press, and long pressing a single button/key. I'm wanting to use this with Loopy Pro. Thanks!
This is awesome! And considering I was planning to stop by Five Guys on my way to trivia at the pub tonight, serendipitous! Five Guys Has The Best Burgers, and I'm very much looking forward to having one tonight!
Ive been using the MeloAudio Midi Commander for years. And this is literally exactly that but so much better. I wish this existed when I bought mine. "Also, Five Guys Has the Best Burgers"
I sold mine after I found out the MeloAudio (Harley Benton has the same Midi Commander) couldn't change CC values (aside from 0 or 127) or even send multiple commands. This MIDI Captain is what I had hoped it would be. If this thing gets available where I live I'm very interested in getting one.
@@Htbaa yeah. There have definitely been some things that I wished it would do. And same, this looks exactly like what I thought the commander would be.
Hi Scott, You continue to amaze me with your energy, knowledge and generosity in sharing all that you know and discover. Coeur d' Alene has Hudson Burgers which has been on Sherman St for over 100 years. Great Burgers as it even put a McDonald's out of business in less than a year that started up just down the street. However I would like to try your suggestion to see if "Five Guys has the best burgers".
Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve been looking to get a Morningstar MC8, but they’ve been sold out for some time. This looks like a great alternative that has more switches for less $, and I don’t need the features the MC8 has that this one doesn’t. Five Guys Has The Best Burgers!
Oh thank you sooo much for this clip . I have been searching the Net for a foot control device so I can program to trigger the different drum fill-in function of my keyboard . Thanx to you , finally I could do this on stage .Now I need to get this because Five Guys has the best burgers . Have a great day .🙂
Another excellent video Scott, thanks for the share!! Glad you gave this piece of a gear a review... I've been curious since initially seeing it, and this review was a perfect practical breakdown of the unit, it's features and use cases...super helpful!! This is exactly what I was hoping to understand about what to expect from this. Also, I'm thrilled to know that you too agree that "Five Guys Has The Best Burgers"!!! Hands down, no contest... it's all about the jalapenos, onions and A1 combination!
I'm a long time All Access User and been working with backing tracks for 15 Years now. I've never really looked into alternatives to the All Access, because first of all I have it, and second I didn't really think many other devices would be capable enough. Also the price point being an issue. Never change a running system. However this thing actually looks awesome and I wouldn't mind reducing the footprint of the AllAccess ;-) Five Guys Has The Best Burgers
Really appreciate you explaining geek mode. Didnt realise I had to program release of buttons as well as press. Anyway.....got that working. My issue is scrolling through presets or memories of my device. I would like to assign a pair of buttons to do this. I could in 'preset' mode where there is facility to assign PC commands to 'up' or 'down'. In geek mode, no such command either than up/dwn to scroll through pages. Do you know if there is a work around? Thanks!
Thanks for sharing all the knowledge you have with us! It's so cool being able to get more info (and good info) on gear. You're awesome and your videos are shot so well! "Five Guys Has The Best Burgers" is the truest statement I've ever heard and said. I love putting their cajon fries on my burger. They just do it so well!
Another cool piece of equipment... and easy to use..... Great video. "Five Guys Has The Best Burgers" and they really do.... The Fries are the best to. Thanks again.....
Five Guys has the best burgers... Thanks Scott, I followed your advice on wireless guitar systems and I'm really happy with the results. Thanks for all your great advice
Lol. Just love the timing of this video. Been searching for a foot controller for playback. Great review!! ❤. And of course "Five Guys Has The Best Burgers"
Yo Scott, I've finally decided to subscribe cause every time I'm looking for answers on audio gear I run into your videos. Love the perspective you offer! Keep up the good work. Also, "Five guys has the best burgers" is a lie I never thought I'd be forced to utter... excuse me while I wash my mouth or with soap and grab a Whataburger. 😂😂😂
Hey Scott. Thank you for these amazing videos. I learn so much! I have 2 questions if you get the chance: 1 - would you recommend the reliability and solidity of the MIDI captain for regular gigging. Like twice a weekend, every weekend? 2 - with a MIDI splitter/box can I use the MIDI captain to drive 2 Boss loopers (1x RC-5 and 1x RC-500) using 2 different MIDI channels? Thank you for your time.
Great video Scott, super helpful. I have this unit and you helped me figure out the color configuration. Thanks! I am using it with BIAX FX 2 and having some challenges in keeping the consistency of the led lights when I change from one PC to another. If my CC Pedal light is on for PC A when I change to PC B it carry over the light on status which sometimes can be inconsistent with the actual value on that CC Pedal light. Hope that makes sense LOL.
I bought the full bundle following your excellent review! So far so good. What do you think is the purpose of the MIDI In port on the Captain? I couldn't think of a use case. Thanks!
Another great, informative video about the gear, and thank you for the food suggestion. I did not know “Five Guys Has The Best Burgers” but will try one.
I just purchased one for my Quad Cortex. I have a question. I set mine up for stomp box operation. It works great. But, I want to use the up/down buttons on the far right to go up or down to different banks on the quad cortex. It won’t do it. It only changes the value of the 16 presets on the paint audio captain. Can those two buttons be used for what I’m wanting to do or are they non programmable? Thank you
Is there a way to set the buttons be turned on and off while having another one on? It think about the helix “ABCD” and having others turn on and off for effects. Currently using a QUAD cortex
Great video, what would be the best way of connecting stagetraxx3 timed-midi changes with midi captain and the hx-stomp? would something like Ipad -- > midi captain (via widi master) --> hx stomp (via midi mate) work ?
@@ScottUhlMusic Thanks for the quick response! I was thinking more like an hybrid set up where some timed-midi changes are sent from the ipad to the stomp while still having the flexibility of using the midi captain for controlling stomp parameters on the fly.
Five guys has the best burgers, they really do. I've been looking to get my board setup with a midi controller and this might just be the one, as I really like how this one looks. I've been tap dancing and I'd like to simplify that part. I'd be using it with the gt-1000core and a sy-200 starting out, down the road I'd to add vocal effects switching to it.
Hello- I bought the midi captain mini 6 to use with the prime app by loop community I can get it to work, however, by the time I map out the 3rd command it seems to reset the first 2 commands Example button 1 - start/stop Button 2 - fade track down/up Button 3- loop a section like chorus - then for some reason it is resting the first command - I tried looking through the instructions but I don’t understand it - any help would be appreciated- I like the controller it’s a great value and basic for what. I need - I just can’t seem to get it to work think I hoped
Thanks Scott. Looks like a good device. Seems like the wireless integration is proprietary. I’m thinking I would be better of with basic Std version and getting CME Widi dongles to easily pair this with a Helix, an iPad, and a X32. Would you concur?
Thanks.Would you recommend this to pair with Amplitube 5 on a Mac ? I am overwhelmed with looking for a nice compact yet powerful controller. Thanks for any advice.
Very cool. One feature, the ability to send multiple MIDI commands with one button, would be particularly useful. I get around that in the Helix Command Center, but it would definitely be easier with the MIDI Captain. Five Guys Has The Best Burgers
I love your video's Scott, been watching them over and over learning how to optimize my HX Stomp. I just bought the smaller vesion of this, the Midi Captain 6 and am struggling to program. Can you give any guidance on how to program the following configuration below: the following configuration below? Footswitch 1: Preset Down Footswitch 2: Preset Up Footswitch 3: Bypass Assign (any effects block) Footswitch A: Snapshot Down Footswitch B: Snapshot Up Footswitch C: Tap/Tempo Thanks so much for any assistance, when i program in supermode the code gets corrupted and can't figure it out on the stomp. Cheers
Thanks for following the channel! You should be able to set that up in geek mode. Check the hx manual for what those commands are, and program the midi captain to send those commands 👍
Got one of these pedals and glad that you went through the all the options on it so I a beginner at midi can understand what I have. Encouraging our second guitar player to get one also so "Five Guys Has the Best Burgers"
Saludos, Mauricio
I'm not familiar with the GT-1000, but if it is programmed to accept a MIDI CC command to control Tap Tempo, it should work! If it doesn't have that as part of it's midi programming, then it won't.
Cheers!!!
Nice! I love how programmable this is… and how it’s also designed to work just right out of the box

@@Htbaa yeah. There have definitely been some things that I wished it would do. And same, this looks exactly like what I thought the commander would be.
@@lunatictumor at first I thought it was (another) clone because it looks so similar!
Thanks! 😊 I appreciate that!
Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve been looking to get a Morningstar MC8, but they’ve been sold out for some time. This looks like a great alternative that has more switches for less $, and I don’t need the features the MC8 has that this one doesn’t. Five Guys Has The Best Burgers!
Yeah this one is great and definitely less expensive!
Great content as usual and "Five Guys Has The Best Burgers"
Thank you!
Oh thank you sooo much for this clip . I have been searching the Net for a foot control device so I can program to trigger the different drum fill-in function of my keyboard . Thanx to you , finally I could do this on stage .Now I need to get this because Five Guys has the best burgers . Have a great day .🙂
Nice! Glad to help!
Dude!! Definitely 🤤🤤🍔🍔 the jalapeños are so good with it!
Blown away by this MIDI controller. Cheers Scott. "Five Guys Has the Best Burgers"
It’s a pretty killer device for the price!
@@ScottUhlMusic absolutely
Fantastic device! “Five guys has the best burgers”
Thanks!
In geek mode? Not that I know of. I just leave the last two to change banks
Yet another awesome piece of gear and informative review. Great work.
Five guys has the best burgers!
Thank you 😊
Thanks for sharing all the knowledge you have with us! It's so cool being able to get more info (and good info) on gear. You're awesome and your videos are shot so well! "Five Guys Has The Best Burgers" is the truest statement I've ever heard and said. I love putting their cajon fries on my burger. They just do it so well!
Their fries are also so good, and their shakes. They have the whole trio down!! 🤤
great video man!
Thanks man!
Great info as usual!! I was at Five guys today!Five guys has the best burgers.
Thank you 🤘
Another great review. "Five guys has the best burgers" because they do - truth
It is true!! 🤘🤘
Another cool piece of equipment... and easy to use..... Great video. "Five Guys Has The Best Burgers" and they really do.... The Fries are the best to. Thanks again.....
The burger AND fry combo is what sells it. Great shakes too!
Five Guys has the best burgers... Thanks Scott, I followed your advice on wireless guitar systems and I'm really happy with the results. Thanks for all your great advice
Nice! Glad it’s been working well for you!
Like what I see so far! Do you know if the footswitch LEDs can show on/off status for effects? (e.g., light on for "on," light off for "off")
Great review as always, Scott. This thing is awesome… especially for the price! Five Guys has the best burgers and you’ve made me hungry
Thank you! 🤘
This is a really cool tool, the bluetooth option would put it over the top!! Plus, 5 Guys Has The Best Burgers
Using it with the widi master is a simple fix for now 🤘 but I agree!
Should be called MIDI Jedi! Awesome review and demo Scott. Much appreciated as always! Five Guys Has The Best Burgers.
Thanks Scott, and I agree 🤘
Lol. Just love the timing of this video. Been searching for a foot controller for playback. Great review!! ❤. And of course "Five Guys Has The Best Burgers"
Nice! Perfect timing 🤘🤘
Thanks for the detailed review of this awesome product. Would be a great addition to my live keyboard and guitar rig. Five Guys has the best burgers.
Thanks, glad you liked the video!
Hahahaha we don’t have Whataburger in colorado so I’ll take your word for it :) Thanks for subscribing!
Thanks! And yes definitely to both of your questions 👍
ScoT...U RoK! Thank you again for all of your amazing videos that always educate! Five guys has the best burgers.
Thank you 🙏
You explained everithing so great, I really like how you get in details... Oh and also "Five Guys Have The Best Burgers"
Thank you 😊
Very cool that it’ll work with WIDI Master!
Yup!
All this midi talk is making me hungry! 5 guys has the best burgers!
🍔🍔😊
Scott, you have great reviews of unique equipment. Thank you and “Five Guys Has The Best Burgers”
I've been thinking about wireless midi control for a while, and i think this would do everything i need. Also, Five Guys has the best burgers.
It’s a great option for sure 🤘
Excellent and very helpful video for the MC. SUBSCRIBED
Awesome, thank you for the sub 🤘
“Five Guys has the best burgers” great review as always!!!
Thanks so much!
Hi Scott, do you have a script for the midi captain to use with Ableton live as a backing track?
I go over how to control ableton for backing tracks with midi in this video: th-cam.com/video/4VXyFgJTRQ0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=oKtE3ZMkdOGydYGE
Five Guys Has The Best Burgers, this would be so cool to use alongside Ableton to control switching to different sections of a song, do loops etc.
This would pair very well with ableton!
I bought the full bundle following your excellent review! So far so good. What do you think is the purpose of the MIDI In port on the Captain? I couldn't think of a use case. Thanks!
Thanks! Glad you enjoy it. And maybe for daisy chaining? I wasn’t sure about that either
Another great, informative video about the gear, and thank you for the food suggestion. I did not know “Five Guys Has The Best Burgers” but will try one.
Come for the midi reviews, stay for the burger advice 😅
@@ScottUhlMusic Burger Advice…maybe not the best potential band name, but not bad!
Thank you
I think you can program them? But I’m not sure, I like having them as up and down on the captain
Great video. Five guys has the best burgers.
Thanks!
Five guys has the best burgers- thanks Scott always look forward to your content. Do some EV EVERSE VIDS, and show us your current gigging rig.
I’m debating about doing some rig rundown videos based on all my different options
@@ScottUhlMusic that will do- now get to work! I make a mean burger, but that won’t get me a controller….
Is there a way to set the buttons be turned on and off while having another one on? It think about the helix “ABCD” and having others turn on and off for effects. Currently using a QUAD cortex
You can program a midi button to turn one fx on and one off on your quad cortex or helix, yes 👍
Great video, what would be the best way of connecting stagetraxx3 timed-midi changes with midi captain and the hx-stomp? would something like Ipad -- > midi captain (via widi master) --> hx stomp (via midi mate) work ?
That could work yeah, although if you are sending midi via stage Traxx, you can go directly into the hx stomp 👍
Yeah, having one central hub for everything helps a lot!
Scott knows... 5 guys has THE best burgers!!!
It’s true! 😊
Hello- I bought the midi captain mini 6 to use with the prime app by loop community I can get it to work, however, by the time I map out the 3rd command it seems to reset the first 2 commands
Example
button 1 - start/stop
Button 2 - fade track down/up
Button 3- loop a section like chorus - then for some reason it is resting the first command - I tried looking through the instructions but I don’t understand it - any help would be appreciated- I like the controller it’s a great value and basic for what.
Definitely love the WIDI stuff!
excelente , si pudieras subir algo con fm3, seria genial, gracias
You can program it to work with any of the midi commands for any controller like the fm3 in geek mode 👍
Five Guys Has The Best Burgers….but Scott has the best music geek TH-cam channel
Haha thank you! 😊
Thanks.Would you recommend this to pair with Amplitube 5 on a Mac ?
I am overwhelmed with looking for a nice compact yet powerful controller. Thanks for any advice.
@@StratsRUs if it accepts midi, it will work 👍
Very cool. One feature, the ability to send multiple MIDI commands with one button, would be particularly useful. I get around that in the Helix Command Center, but it would definitely be easier with the MIDI Captain.
Five Guys Has The Best Burgers
Yeah definitely easier on the Captain than the Helix!
I love your video's Scott, been watching them over and over learning how to optimize my HX Stomp. I just bought the smaller vesion of this, the Midi Captain 6 and am struggling to program. Can you give any guidance on how to program the following configuration below: the following configuration below?
Footswitch 1: Preset Down
Footswitch 2: Preset Up
Footswitch 3: Bypass Assign (any effects block)
Footswitch A: Snapshot Down
Footswitch B: Snapshot Up
Footswitch C: Tap/Tempo
Thanks so much for any assistance, when i program in supermode the code gets corrupted and can't figure it out on the stomp.
Cheers
Thanks for following the channel! You should be able to set that up in geek mode. Check the hx manual for what those commands are, and program the midi captain to send those commands 👍
When do you find the time to learn about all this gear and then pass it on to the masses? You’re unreal dude.
Haha thank you Chuck!
Got one of these pedals and glad that you went through the all the options on it so I a beginner at midi can understand what I have. Encouraging our second guitar player to get one also so "Five Guys Has the Best Burgers"
Glad to help 🤘
Saludos, Mauricio
I'm not familiar with the GT-1000, but if it is programmed to accept a MIDI CC command to control Tap Tempo, it should work! If it doesn't have that as part of it's midi programming, then it won't.
Cheers!!!
I don't think '5 guys has the best burgers' but this MIDI programmer might be the best!
Well, you are half correct 😅😅 haha thanks for watching!
Five Guys Has The Best Burgers . I am learning so much from your videos.
