Scott! I have searched TH-cam several times over the past year looking for a clear and concise tutorial to help me understand these MIDI concepts. I have watched several videos and downloaded books on the topic. They all explain the basics but do not connect the dots with a practical working example. I am so grateful that I found this video today! It is a game changer. Please accept my donation of $10 for this compilation of awesomeness! I love the GIFs, makes an otherwise dry & confusing topic humorous and fun to watch. Thank you, thank you, super thank you. Best ever.

Well done! The funnel hierarchy helped me to understand the differences in the message "types" and what they truly control. This was the basic information that I really needed, and that everyone else skipped over and then went straight into the more complicated material.

I keep coming back to your videos because you're an incredible teacher - truly. My husband and I are learning so much from you. I'm an old school musician and back in the 90's/00's we just didn't have this kind of tech readily available so we never learned how to do anything beyond stomping on individual Boss pedals on a massive pedal board. But now that we're back playing out big shows, I'm trying to get us fully up to speed on the latest tech that can make the job easier, and you keep delivering! We've got equipment that we've only scratched the surface on learning but you're blowing the doors wide open for us. THANKS AGAIN!

Ha! Yes old school here too! I started before fuzz pedals were even available....had to rely on tube amp distortion...but then the blessed Big Muff appeared on the scene to save us! LOL! Look at what musicians have now...AMAZING!

I wish I could like this video more than once. This is amazing for a total noob to MIDI like me. Very clearly explained
Because of this video, I was able to get my Line 6 POD HD500X and Boss Katana MKII to communicate with each other

    Scott,
Absolutely love your channel. I’ve always been interested in learning/using MIDI but it seemed quite complicated. Thank you for putting this video together to break down the hierarchy and general concepts. Very, very helpful and insightful. Makes much more sense when you show a real world example. I’ve used Onsong for at least a decade to arrange my music and set lists but never used the MIDI function. Definitely going to dive in and give it a go. Thanks again!

What a great rundown! I feel like I'm ready to mess up with MIDI now. Just the guys doing the app on the iPad are not the brightest. I feel like they wanted to be less confusing by starting with 1, but they ended up adding much more confusion.

Hello Scott ! This is the BEST by fay video to teach the basic of Midi. I am attempting to use my DAW (S1) with hope of controlling VST & Multi-Timbral VST's. No one has gone as far as you to explain the concepts of how I might go about doing such? I am now excited to try again! I am tired of building out templates for each articulation in an orchestra. That takes forever and I end up with a Massive Template. Which neither of those are desirable at all.

Thanks, I’m glad it had helped so much. Midi is still a headache often times… even for me. But it’s still really helpful!
