Fun fact about the past music, it uses digital samples played back through the Richo audio chip in the Sega CD
Ah.
So, for anyone wondering, this means that the synthesized audio isn't desynchronized because of the audio chip being controlled by the Sega/Mega CD, separate from the framerate and different vertical blanking period.
Which would explain why these tracks couldn't be replaced in the North American version.
Yeah, from what I could tell the past music is very similar to mod tracker music which originated on the amiga
And you couldn't listen to them when putting the CD in a normal CD player :-(

It still baffles me that they thought:
_"Well, Sonic games are about speed and momentum,_ *so let's make absolutely no attempt to try and fix the messed up physics in the european releases!"*
Another thing that really triggers me is how they optimised the music for Sonic 2 but not Sonic 1, specifically the title screen. That would really have irritated me back then, with one being faster than the other.
& Knuckles 101 Well they were still learning how to use the console in time of Sonic 1, they did an improvement lol.

@@palaceswitcher it IS optimised (kinda), it's slower than NTSC speed, but at least it's faster than PAL sonic 1
atleast CD and 2 has their own music optimized otherwise they would sound like shit

I think the best music from Sonic CD is Quartz Quadrant Zone (Good Future JP). It's so CATCHY!

I like how you came back to the music test comparison, which is nicely synced like in Sonic 2. I wasn't expecting the intro demo to be in perfect sync with the two speed settings. Hooray for 50Hz when it comes to comparing loading times, only just. Was interesting to see a few unique tests for this comparison.
Overall, glad to see this series come back, and looking forward to seeing Knuckles Chaotix in 50Hz vs 60Hz.
Refresh rate will not affect loading times.
@@iwanttocomplain That's a good thing. Looks like it's more of a hardware situation. Then again, the loading times are on a disc, which can be different to a cartridge.
@@itsNikash. I think the loading times only being milliseconds different could amount to a tiny scratch or piece of dust or just something technical like how the disc was written differently between the two regions. The amount of data to load is identical.

The resolution difference keeps bugging me, however, it may very well because I'm so damn used to 60 Hz in damn almost everything. Nice touch with the PAL vs NTSC letter arrangement behind, too, keeping it from the announcement post.
The Japanese version has such nice packaging, especially compared to the North American.

While I don't have the ntsc sega cd ver., I do have the japanese one as well as the pc version. They have their own little quirks and it's interesting stacking them against each other.
The japanese case is my fave by a huge margin though, especially with all of the quotes.

Though Metallic Madness Past uses both the FM and PCM chips
all the past tracks use the PCM chip on its own.

yes, but it actually uses the Mega / Sega CD's own *PCM* chip.

Fact: On the PS1 the only difference (Besides the higher contrast)
It is that there are less FPS, but they still synchronize, if you want check, I have already played the crash bandicoot games in PAL and NTSC on PS1, but they do synchronize, and I don't know if there is also synchronization on any other console but it differed frame rate.

The American Release is creepy as the game over music sounds like it came out from Sonic.exe
That's because it's literally the song used in the fan game of Sonic.exe but with an added reverse segment.

playing a Pal version of the game on a 60hz system with a region free bios (easy to do if you can get the bios and use an everdrive to load the bios), has interesting results, the opening cinematic gets badly messed up

I would really like a 50hz emulator. I prefer the physics as I grew up with them.
Just boot up a PAL version of the game on an emulator then. Job done. It will run in 50Hz mode.
