There IS a game-breaking glitch in this Stealth port:
After beating Robotnik at the end of Green Hill Act 3, use Debug mode to put a Giant Ring object on the right side of the animal capsule, have at least 50 rings to make it appear (use Debug if necessary), break the capsule open and your character will run right into the Giant Ring. After exiting the Special Stage, you'll be sent to a VERY unfinished Marble Zone that will progressively corrupt the game the longer you stay there. Resetting the game will fix the problem.

    • @mossnb

It's also a bug in the original, however softlocking upon entry.

    • @EmoryIllustrated

If debug mode is required, it's not really a proper "bug"
Debug mode intentionally breaks many aspects of the game

Let me point an oversight in the video at 0:20 :
There were phones and emulators capable of running Sonic 1 at full speed. I remember using Nokia N82 (released in 2007) and running a Mega Drive emulator (most likely one of the PicoDrive family) on its Symbian OS. Hell, I even launched a fully-functioning Windows 95 on that beast, but, as you can guess, launching Minesweeper there alone took about a minute. =)

I think the only reason the ring texture changes is because of Tails’ supernatural powers. He’s turning them into dummy rings for use later on.

You joke, but Tails actually does have supernatural powers. He's a kitsune. This is basically confirmed in Lost World since he can manipulate individual strands of fur like tentacles, indicating some level of shapeshifting (which also explains how he can helicoptor without the tails clipping through each other. Because they actually are clipping through each other)
Also the whole he's a super genius and committed genocide against an entire bird species using the Chaos Emeralds and an arsenal of high powered explosives and napalm probably indicates something going on, too

So many ports of Sonic 1 available out there, half of which I didn't even know existed, I knew there was an awful GBA port from 2006 but wasn't aware that Stealth had a go at porting the game to the GBA without all the terrible asthetics was out there, I only knew of a Knuckles In Sonic 1 port to the GBA which was probably by Stealth also. 0:15 actually, in 2006 era you could already emulate 8bit and 16bit consoles on mobiles pretty decently on several Nokia devices like the nGage, nokia 6600, 6630 and 6680 and more!
*IF* i remember right, in the ones i listed, only the nGage and 6600 had some frameskip as they were earlier 2003 devices while the 6630 (relased in 2004) was a bit beefier and the 6680 (from 2005) was even better!

I didn't know this existed so I tried it on my GBA and it's pretty great. But the reason that this port is so nice compared to the official port might be down to rom size. This only has Green Hill and one piece of the Labyrinth stage and it's nearly 8mb. I think the largest possible official game size is 32mb. A complete version of this game might be able to fit in 32mb but the official developer would have to consider manufacturing cost of a larger game vs sales, etc.

You can break the game, give yourself 50 rings total at the end of green hill act 3 spawn a Big Ring, hit the capsule and fall into the ring. Special stage 3 is still the same and fully functional, but after you will end up in marble zone act 1, which is a glitchy broken mess. It uses green hill objects and more than likely was just put there as a place holder.

Technically you could play Sonic 1 “portably” in the 1990’s using a Portable CRT TV and a Mega Drive plus Sonic 1 cartridge. Unfortunately “portable” CRT TVs of the time are usually big old CRTs, up to 14-inches, with handles on top. All of which require electrical power. And the Mega Drive is also no small beast, so it wouldn’t really be portable. However it’s definitely possible to play it outside using this setup and an extension lead.

A little extra about Sonic 1 GBA… If you use debug at the end of Green Hill Act 3 to spawn a Special Stage ring (granted if you have 50+ rings), you can bypass the intended action of getting booted back to the title screen, and access Special Stage 3, and soon after, Marble Zone. Well, in name, anyway… I don't think there's a good short way to describe what it's like here, other than "invalid data that somehow doesn't crash the game".
Also, there's _another_ proof-of-concept port, published in 2009, from Stealth… This time, featuring Sonic 1, 2 and 3 on the Nintendo DS (each of their first zones are fully playable). From what I recollect, he pitched the ROM to Sega in hopes of it being the basis for development on Sonic Classic Collection, but obviously his development work didn't make to official store shelves. Here's its Sonic Retro page; info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_DS_(fan_game)

0:23 The statement is not actually correct. While other people mentioned devices such as n-gage or J2ME apps, actually the very Sony Ericsson W880i that's shown in the video (equipped with a 200MHz ARM9 CPU) was capable of fairly advanced emulation with a phone firmware hack that allowed them to run apps written in C(and even assembly), and not just slow Java. While I don't remember about Sega emulators specifically (well, I know there were some but I don't remember how well they worked), systems such as SNES and even GBA were emulated at fully playable speeds in most games...
...with the caveat of there being no sound, as (AFAIR) the firmware hack did not grant low-level enough access to the phone's sound subsystem make it work out.

Biggest tip is to use Extrem's Game Boy interface rather than the official software disc (official is blurred). With my GameCube, I have a GCHD-MK2 via component cables to the OSSC. Then that to my capture card. :)

This hack just makes me outright disappointed in Sega even more with their GBA port of Sonic 1. Hackers actually ported a functional version of Sonic 1 that works with added features to it for the GBA and it succeeded where as Sega failed. When fans succeed at something more then the main company you know they screwed up.

Gameboy Player? You really should try to get yourself a GBA Consolizer. It's simply fantastic! I have one and it's a true treat. Oh, and yeah, the GBA can obviously handle a game of this nature. It's FAR more powerful than the hardware inside the Genesis from a technical standpoint.
