- The 32x really sticks it to the Genesis with an unique difference we've never encountered before within this series. Knuckles' Chaotix has some surprises up it's sleeve, making the choice between 50Hz and 60Hz more difficult. This video is to celebrate reaching the 40k subscriber mark. Game is RIPE for some modding. The music and visual design are on point, but the levels are an absolute mess. Redoing the level layouts would leave you with a fantastic game.
Absolutely, like the rubber-banding element is brilliantly done, but the level design is the opposite of what it needs. Also this is one hell of a frustratingly fun two-player game, like it's a whole different experience.
This is probably your best 50hz v 60hz video yet, red. Keep it up!
The PAL version has one advantage up its sleeve you forgot to mention. Knuckles Chaotix has a lot of slowdown compared to the Mega Drive titles, and alongside a PAL console sporting a faster DMA and VDP1, the 50Hz framerate could help to actually mask the sluggish performance!
6:34 I guess Sega got technical with the Knuckles' Chaotix sound test screen as it shows the piano keyboard layout for all of the sound channels for the 32x.
Hey RHS. I'm not sure if you'll read this, but I just wanted to say that I've grown to appreciate your work in the Sonic community. As someone with little experience in the community (at least so far), I find the way you improved with feedback inspiring. From a """Sonic recolour""", to who you are and what you made today, I appreciate it. I also really like your reviews and just Sonic vids in general, they're great as background noise or just casual viewing (which isn't very common with me - most of what I "watch" on TH-cam serves as background noise).

I gotta say the PAL 32X logo look really cool compared to what was being used for the US/JP. Heck even the spine for the game's box looks better.
I actually love Chaotix! Very experimental but it had a charm once you knew how to work the band physics. 😂 And at least we had AN original Sonic game on the 32x. 😉 Great video btw! 🙂

Always enjoyed watching your 50Hz vs 60Hz (PAL vs NTSC) comparison videos. Regarding this video, the change in tone at 0:23. All your intros are amusing. Oh dear regarding how expensive the PAL 32x is. Good thing you had a backup plan. 1:22 didn't see that coming, but that was funny.
That was fascinating to go in depth with the hardware aspect comparison with the Mega Drive/Genesis and 32x. Also the fact more is displayed at the bottom with those extra 16 pixels in height in the PAL version, sweet. Now I understand why there's a tougher decision to choose either frames over picture quality, and vice versa. Knuckles Chaotix pass the music sync test, like in Sonic 2.
That ending was totally unexpected.
You probably get this sort of comment all the time, but I just want to say that the humor in these videos you throw in is something i need. Like when I desperately need a smile, your videos have helped.

I'm so excited, I've got an Anbernic RG-350P and Retroarch was just updated for it to include direct support for 50Hz games! There are so many C64 games that have the opposite problem, developed in and for PAL territories and therefore run too fast on NTSC... now I can finally enjoy those games without weird refresh rate issues!

You should consider doing ''Sonic 3D Flickies' Island'' 50Hz vs 60Hz which throws a spanner in the works. A game made in a 50Hz region.
Let demos of Sonic 3D blast were shown at E3, so the fame would have runned at 60Hz. I suspect it was designed in 60hz, and optimised in 50hz (the game detects which one to use).
This could be an opportunity for RHS to speak to Jon Burton about it. He's the creator of the game, and has his own TH-cam channel.
@@RadioTails Definitely be interesting to see what could come out of that but I fail to understand the reasoning for doing that, like why would a UK video game developing company make their own game play better in regions other than their own. In 1996 if Traveller's Tales were aware of the refresh rate differences around the world wouldn't they have fully optimised their game to play the same everywhere? They had 8 months to create the game, that's more time than most developers got when making Mega Drive games so they would have had the time to fully optimise it. Jon Burton did say once that back in the 1990's he didn't know any better like most of us regarding 50Hz.
To my knowledge Sonic 3D is almost identical in PAL and NTSC. The title screen displays a different title (Blast/Flickies' Island) and the framerate is faster or slower depending on 50Hz or 60Hz, but the question is, which framerate is the intended one?

I cant find a good way to play this game as its never been re released.
You can actually hack the VDP registers of the NTSC Mega Drive / Genesis to get a 240-line vertical resolution. Some tech demos actually make use of this!

Hey Redhotsonic.... this whole time you were praising 50hz for a higher resolution... without realising that the screen is still squashed into the same space as 60hz, making the screen actually be squashed on a 50hz CRT. Meaning that all this time you didn't realise it was fitting _more_ information in the _same_ space. Whoops.
Yeah, I did know that. I've even explained this several times. Including in this video.

well, that statement is false, because back in that day:
plugin a pal console to a pal TV, got you 'normal' screen with an 4:3 aspect ratio.
and a ntsc console to a ntsc TV, got you 'normal' screen with an 3:2 aspect ratio
Problem arise, when you mix the standards on a multi standard monitor
ntsc console on pal TV = missing top and bottom
pal console on ntsc TV = squashed top and bottom
This is a by product of the pal and ntsc resolution being different.
also, you can get pal 60hz, since pal is not exclusive to 50hz

Not true. Plug in a PAL Mega Drive into a PAL CRT and play Sonic 1 and you will still have the squished effect (bars above and below). It will appear how I've shown it on the PVM. If what you were saying is correct and it wouldn't show the bars, then the extra drawn lines for Chaotix wouldn't display on a PAL CRT because they would have been cut off by the CRT.
I remember playing Sonic on an old PAL CRT back in 1991.

I wish there were ROM Hacks of the Sonic games that utilized ALL of the PAL resolution (and fully, not like the way Chaotix did it) and optimized the gameplay and the music.

Seeing an extra couple pixels at the bottom of the screen is far from a convincing reason to pick PAL. I'd always pick NTSC.
