The funny thing is, the opposite problem happened during the Commadore 64 era. Europe made a lot of games for the system at the time, and they were built for PAL format from the ground up. North America didn't do as well as Europe due to lack of games and the fact that many of them ran too fast on NTSC systems.
I just found this out recently. PAL isn't actually stretched. The NTSC version is just placed inside the PAL resolution, leaving the extra space unused. It appears stretched in 4:3 on our 16:9 screens due to PAL having a higher resolution in height (NTSC being 240p and PAL 288p). I found this out when editing PAL footage and realised this. I simply changed the horizontal scaling percentage of the footage for PAL to 70.3% instead of 75% for NTSC. As 25% of a 16:9 display is 4:3 (At least for NTSC resolutions of 240p & 480p). So PAL is stretched if set to 4:3 on TVs, but not if you're scaling it to a monitor or something that displays all the pixels correctly.

The music speed is set during the initial boot so if in your system you switch modes without rebooting you can enjoy the slow 50hz music as what it could have ended up as if they treated it the same as sonic 1
1. 2:47 There are also mord things that are syncronized: The ending cutscene, the credits, super sonic transformation, etc. 2. 7:08 And that's why I don't choose sonic and tails in the game.
I knew you said during your amazing Sonic 1: 50Hz vs 60Hz video that you were going to make a Sonic 2 version of it, and here it is, even better you are officially revealed. :D Sonic 2 was also my 1st Sonic game I've played in my life on the actual Mega Drive. I totally forgot about the checksums. Thanks for reminding us all. :O I preferred the 50Hz version for Sonic 2 because of the music optimisation, having to be a pinch slower, not as slow as Sonic 1. Although the drowning and continue sounds still had the Sonic 1 speed. I always like it for quicker reaction times and the title card when starting a level is only slightly slower. Oh no, not 5:01, when I was younger it always took me a good while to get to the end without messing up. With Sonic and Tails riding together, that helped a bit. Playing special stages solo is more recommended so you don't have to worry about Tails randomly running into bombs. It's more fun in 2 player. Sonic 2 special stages weren't the best. But Super Sonic felt rewarding. I really liked the near ending with your overall reactions shown. Excellent video. Really enjoyed it!
SouthwesternEagle The other advantage is the music isn't fucked up compared to European Sonic 1. Also Sonic CD and Sonic 3 were fully optimized for PAL50
Blank Blank Yep the Music is not that annoying as Sonic’s 1 music was in 50 hz,and Sonic is not that slow as mentioned, but i must say special stages of Sonic 2 in 50hz are very laggy and the Controls do not work very well... And for the Checksum i don’t have to wait ages on my european Mega Drive 2 with Sonic 2 it only takes 3 second before jumping into the sega Logo sequence!
redhotsonic, I like your guide of "Work with Motorola 68000 assembly" you put a lot of time and effort to the guide,I appreciated your hard work on this guide. Thank you very much, I learned a lot how to use the assembly!
Danny Sweeney 2 Either that or a 60 Hz modded PAL SMD, but in some games playing the European games in 60 Hz fucks it all up because it's optimized one way or another for 50 Hz. A lot of times you gotta buy American or Japanese games, but not in this case.
@Danny Sweeney 2 For some games. Others use different programs and using the mismatched one will run fast or slow. I believe all the Sonic games were region detecting though.
I found one thing 50Hz has better than 60Hz that you missed in your video but I don't blame you for not spotting it because it involves having a very good ear. The drum samples are a little bit clearer in 50Hz and down pitched slightly matching the drum sample pitch of the first game's drum samples. In 60Hz the drum samples in Sonic 2 are higher pitched and a little bit more compressed. I found this out one day when I was listening to my upload of the soundtrack and was comparing it to others on TH-cam. In other words, 50Hz has the cleaner soundtrack.
While it may have a slight advantage, it wouldn’t be noticeable to the average human ear and for that reason would be irrelevant. Acknowledgment of a certain fact is what makes the game joyful for me and since I didn’t differentiate the two soundtracks it wouldn’t be important for me. I’m sure people aren’t going to purchase the 50hz version ONLY, because of the fact that the audio quality is better, as yet again it would barely be noticeable.
@@sargonzaya2253Okay Mrs. Debbie downer or Mr. Negative Norman. You've certainly made your opinion in a proud manner. I was merely pointing out a small fact that redhotsonic missed. If it's means nothing to you (which it obviously does) than GOOD FOR YOU!

The music isn't at the same pace, just in 50hz the music runs slightly faster to compensate for the speed loss. The game always performs a check on startup for the amount of Hz, speeding up the music if it's in 50hz.
An interesting thing happened with my apple TV. I noticed that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was running slower on my apple TV compared to my phone, the timer was not counting correctly either. It turns out my apple TV was on its default 1080p 50hz setting, I switched it to 60hz and it fixed sonic.

they removed the correction in Sonic 3 so that they can actually directly change the programming for each version, that's why an NTSC U copy won't work in a PAL or NTSC J version, and same thing for the rest of the versions.
Huh. I see you're right, I tried Sonic 3 on my Fusion emulator with PAL setting and it started up with an error message. So I started it in NTSC and then switched immediately to PAL. What's up, emulator? XD
I know its an ancient video but the PAL Mega Drives are slightly underclocked hence why it takes longer to load, also the reason for the squished screen is PAL is a higher resolution so because it needs more to fill the screen it looks squished, the actual video quality would be higher on PAL too but hard to tell on modern tvs.

I swear they edited this one to go at the same speed as NTSC. It's still 50hz, but they sped the game up so it has quicker gameplay, which makes up for the slowdown? Didn't they do that? Am I just pulling that out of my arse?
Right, the different Hz of the power supply in UK vs US 50/60 is what determines the speed the system runs at. Its freq. gen crystal takes the incoming frequency and multiplies it to get the CPU clock speed. That's why UK MegaDrive's run slower. Some games were optimised for 50Hz tho...
Power supply do supply DC voltage to components of the console, 50/60hz does not make a difference. Adrian Gauna no, thats just stupid. The artist greg martin made the art in america, thats why its the *american* art.
+Cinos the Dense potato Does it really matter who made or used the box art? There should be know ''Us and Them'' here. We're all the same.
Yeah I looked Greg Martin up, it said he did the artwork of Sonic 2 for America AND Europe, sad to know that he passed away in 2014. Incidentally I've seen the Genesis version of Sonic 1 use the European box art with Sonic standing doing his famous pose with the graffiti behind him.
The european box art just used the japanese sonic design and made an original background, that doesnt look like graffiti though.
