    So you took an Anet A8 and replaced or will replace all the Anet components...with all the bits you have left, you can now build another...Anet A8! Woohoo

      +Stu Elliott lol pretty much. The original Anet was my stepping stone

      +Stu Elliott well, a printer doesn't take much room once dissasembled, you could say it fits in a shoe box ;)

      thats the best way to sneak it by, the first purchase you can get away with becus it is cheap. Then you start replacing parts soin the end you have a 1000usd printer that you would not have been aloud to buy from the start. And since each upgrade is cheapyou can sneak them by

    Hi Joe, just recently bought Anet A8 5 days ago and I have been going through youtube looking for tips and trick and I find your video very helpful from all the other channels I viewed. I expect the same journey you experienced and feel the same satisfaction for all the modification you did in improving the performance of the printer.

      I have a problem that I can not solve, after changing the frame to the one of the orballo when I print a circumference I do not get round is slightly flattened. Could it be that you have removed the original extruder and have placed an E3DV6 clone ??

    So, my first reaction was in short: Your Anet A8 isn't an A8 anymore, but a P3 Steel.
    I have one myself. Built from scratch, ordered every part and tightened every screw.
    The best upgrades I've done since the first iteration where the MK2 extruder and Z-axis stepper motors with integrated leadscrews. I've printed Baby Groot on this and it came out very nice. It's my workhose now and prints evenything near perfect.
    I'm looking forward to your upgrade with the Titan Aero. It's something that I was thinking about myself, but hadn't had time for it yet.
    Love your contant. Keep it up!

    I know I'm quite late to this party but would you do a review/comparison on BED upgrades please? E.G removable bed, plastic, glass, etc. Thanks. I've tried a couple of things with no success, either the print warps or the temporary bed does after a few uses and recalibration is a pain in the ass.

    Joe! Love your videos... some people (ahem! ohh_hero) cannot see the forest through the trees... You took a printer that could be had by nearly anyone and showed how it can be gradually changed into something great... I've replaced nearly every bit on my twin turbo z... but not at once... money comes in... money saved... upgrade bought... upgrade done... its still a Z and I learned LOADS about cars that I never would have if I hadn't pieced it together... well done, bro. Just bought one today... along with an JGAURORA A5...
    My thought was to turn the Anet A8 into a laser cutting machine

    What Cooling duct do you use on that extruder? All the ones i tried, even the one privided in the files, do not line up nice around the nozzle. Because the output on the fan is not in the middle with the nozzle.

    Once the Anet board is swapped out, does that mean you have fabricated your own machine piece-wise? Is it still an Anet? This is an excellent display of the logic involved in transhumanism. How many upgrades before the person is no longer who they once were? How many upgrades before your printer is your own and no longer an Anet?
    Since you will still have all the Anet parts, will you reassemble them into an Anet? The mother births the child, left broken and in pieces. The father cares for the child and gingerly puts her back together? Is this a story of family and togetherness which you have woven? Will our future robotic successors look back on your video and see a story of compassion you had as their ancestor, the man who merged with machine to make his own? Is this how they will learn of love?

  • @RemainIndoors
    @RemainIndoors 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    is your e3d v6 a clone? or the real thing? I have some z banding on mine currently and my frame and extruder are the same as yours. I noticed last night that the clone e3d is ever so slightly loose. it's not obviously noticeable, but if I wiggle the hotend (with it turned off obviously) it has a little bit of play in it, whereas my actual Prusa you can't wiggle the hotend at all.

    • @3DMakerNoob
      @3DMakerNoob  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Remain Indoors it's an original, to be honest I always found them very reliable so always got original

      try adding a little piece of electrical tape where it clamps over the heatsink. Did that to my clone and it works perfect :-)

    • @RemainIndoors
      @RemainIndoors 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the tip Thomas! I just edited the model to be a little tighter on the clamping part. I'm printing it now to see if it helps, if not, I'll probably give the electrical tape a shot.

    Hi Joe, It sure does not look anything like the Anet anymore.
    Still left the Wingnuts underneath the Build plate?
    What board are you going to use, you mentioned it but could not figure out what board it would be. I have a Keyes 3d Printer controller board laying around, and waiting for the last parts for my Prusa I3 Build.
    @arduinomakes, it only has the moving parts from the Anet A8 left.

    I love the video - the only thing I would ask is that you not print in that vivid red, which so oversaturates (at least on my Vimeo TV) that all detail washes out, making the improvements you made on the A8 difficult if not impossible to see. The gray filament on the other hand - perfect!

    Now it's an Anet A8,000! (3DMN special edition) lol. Awesome job Joe! Once you get all your mods completed, I'd love to see what kind of top print speeds you achieve before quality is compromised. (vs your stock speeds) I've done a lot (most) of the printable upgrades for the A8, and a few hardware mods such as E3DV6 clone, and I was able to achieve a beautiful print of that baby groot at 120mm/sec @ .2mm layer height, so I'm guessing yours may be capable of 140mm/sec? Could it possibly go even faster?

    Is the anet A8 a good printer? No, yes, maybe.
    Was definetly perfect for me. As a complete noob to 3d printing i bought one, build it and learned a lot from that alone. Then i improved it by downloading upgrade parts to print. These worked fine but i found they could be improved so i redesigned some of them a bit and printed the parts. I learned so much from the year and a halve tinkering with the A8 that i am now designing and building one from scratch. So yea, despite the flaws it is a great machine.

    Hey joe I know you know quite a lot about the anet a8 and I was wondering if you could help me solve a problem with it. I have not been able to get a print out of it due to the reason that whenever i go to preheat the filament the pla can not come through like something is holding it back. when I press down the screw to load the filament and push on the filament it just starts dripping out plastic and then goes to a very liquid stream of plastic. I am not sure Iif you have any clue what is going on but any help would be appreciated.

    I think the whole part with getting a Anet to replace everything in the end is that you buy a cheap affordable printer to get started, and not hit a 600 dollar printer right away. Though I had my share of frustration in my build, it's still cool and I kinda look forward to invest more into it and see what it will become. I will probably print the parts for a Hypercube, but thats a different story. It's like legos. Buy a kit, get some more and build further. Just less sore feet.

    So i know that this printer has a lot of capability's and i have one myself... i went the route of the am8 frame with aluminum extrusions. I got bored with the single color and bought the prusa mmu upgrade... it is here now but i have no idea on how to program it at all. Does anyone know where i can find this program or how i need to plug the multiplexer board (new version) into the main anet a8 board

    • @aaronbeckman

      Quicksilver Robotics the multiplexer board is meant for the prusa’s mainboard. I doubt it would transfer to the Anet main board...

    I've been looking to upgrade my Anet A8 to a AM8 frame, but now this got me thinking, seeing this frame. Anyone who could fill in to this choice? AM8 or Steel frame, what would be better/more stable?

    • @3DMakerNoob
      @3DMakerNoob  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Optic I've heard a lot of good things about the AM8 frame. I just found this to be cheaper and more convenient for me

    • @Elaba83
      @Elaba83 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a feeling this frame might be better , because the rods are directly mounted to the frame, unlike the AM8 with printed parts. Aswell the motor mounts are not printed.
      You said you had quite a hard time building this conversion. But if you only have a stock anet A8 ,without the marlin, bltoch and other upgrades you did. Would it still be difficult?. I'm asking because, if i would get this frame and print all the parts now. Would it work out? As i don't have a 2nd printer to print parts wile building the conversion.
      Also, i see the rods are shorter, and you bought new ones. Are they smoother and better surface compared to stock Anet rods? (I could cut the stock anet rods to the new length for the steel frame, and safe the money not buying shorter rods)

    • @3DMakerNoob
      @3DMakerNoob  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Optic you can use the same rods, just cut them shorter as they are pretty much identical. As for the difficulty, it was mainly due to so many modifications at one go. However I still suggest updating to Marling even on a stock Anet, that by itself is quite easy. If it's just a pure replacement of frame, it's not that complicated :)

    • @Elaba83
      @Elaba83 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the quick replies, I'm planning to do the BLtouch and marlin upgrades, and many others, just not all at the same time ;) .A better frame is prior to me as this will improve further prints alot, and better printed upgrades in the future.

    Maybe the Z-wobble came from the leading screws not running freely as they should?

    • @3DMakerNoob
      @3DMakerNoob  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Pfaeff no, it came from the bent leadscrew, then it was reduced further with the parts on top. However, the main culprit it too much play on the bearing and coupling which will be solved in the next upgrade :)

  • @RoyCruse
    @RoyCruse 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm totally new to the a8... My printer is still in the mail even... But everywhere I read that the lead screws are supposed to be free at the top so that, combined with the elastic couplers at the base, any bend no matter how small does not apply force to the X carriage assembly.... The X carriage is supposed to be guided and fixed in place on the X/Y axis by the guide rods only and the lead screw should just be able to move harmlessly on these axis without applying force to it...
    Fixing the lead screws at the top forces any deviation of the lead screw into the X carriage assembly... Thus worsening your z banding issues....
    This logic rings true to me....

  • @ajlenze8
    @ajlenze8 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think you're at the point where you could make videos about building a 3D printer from separately ordered parts, instead of from a kit. I've learned a lot from following your mods, but, at some point (for me it was probably when you replaced the frame), I would have just taken the knowledge I gained from building and modding the A8 and just built a whole new machine. Then you could compare it to your modded A8, including in price.
    BTW, if you do make a printer from scratch, I'd like to see one with a bigger (not smaller) build volume.

      @XxElementalPhoenix 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      might even help the z banding

    • @3DMakerNoob
      @3DMakerNoob  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +luke johnson the frame is ridiculously solid so that spool holder is extremely rigid and I'm 100% positive it is not affecting z banding as I also printed with an external spool holder. I will be in proving it with better z axis rods

  • @marcellemay7721
    @marcellemay7721 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the z banding could be remedied with some better bearings on the z axis. Or perhaps some larger diameter z rods with better bearings. Better couplings at the z motor rods too. Those couplings move a lot. There are better couplings available. I would start with the couplings and linear bearings. The lead screws should be allowed to move freely at the top, if they have some warp to them, fixing them rigid will only make the situation worse. The location of the z axis should be the function of the linear rods only, hence my recommendations above.

      +Tc Berry well strictly speaking the power supply is the most dangerous as it is direct 230 volts and unfused so that should be Paramount to cover first. Electro ics are also important of course but not as much as the power supply. Reason why I didn't cover everything is because I will be upgrading everything again.

    I totally get the need for frame stability but I feel like you lose most of what makes the anet so good, the community. Not being able to use any of the 3d printed upgrades on thingiverse is a big sacrifice imo. I guess its still part of the journey of the anet though like you said, its basically a gateway drug into building your own 3d printer haha. Cool video though Joe, thanks.

    The fun thing about Anet A8 and all of its critics is that Anet A8 is actually not a printer - it's a kit, a bix box of really cool details. So criticise a constructor for a fact that people constructing from it anything they like, and have fun, and this is not anymore an Anet but something else is really pointless. Acrylic frame in this kit is basically worth nothing, it's just a handy addition.

    I think a huge part of this video might have been misinterpreted by a large group of the viewers.
    For one, the Anet A8 is a printer that provides access to 3d printing at a low(very low) cost, because of this, I own one (yes, I know "Why would you buy such a piece of excrement?" Is what most people would be screaming right now, but it was all I could afford at the time). With that said, when I bought it I bought it specifically to learn about 3d printing, to "get into it", so every single print so far had been a gamble, with about 60-70% failures (from prints not sticking to the bed, horrible warping, shifted layers Z-banding like you would simply not believe...) All of the failures I had, taught me something about my printer, what to look for, where to look for it, what to set up mechanically and through software, what parts to change, what parts to keep and what to do with all the new grey hair...(I still don't have an answer for the latter)
    I too have completely replaced the frame with a 3mm mild steel one (Tatara on thingiverse) and yes, through the course of it I've probably forked out around an additional 200 or 300 dollars, but I know much more about troubleshooting print issues now than what I would have if I'd bought a 700 or 800 dollar machine...
    Thanks for the video man! Don't take the naysayers all too seriously...
