@@vixxie9390 Not a lot of people know the Nile Song. Heaviest Pink Floyd song out there. They are my ultimate favorite band as well. Their progression and growth from album to album is mesmerizing and outstanding. Their experiments with sound is unmatched. "More" is my favorite album by them, though it's definitely hard to pick.

David Gilmour's wife Polly Samson Gilmore said that when they have a discussion or an argument she uses words (she's a published author) and he uses his guitar! She was making the point that you guys are that he actually sings with his guitar he just makes it sing. I've seen it said somewhere that guitars want David Gilmour for Christmas!

A song about Syd Barrett the great inspiration for the band who sadly fell into mental illness and was forced to leave. (S)hine on (Y)ou crazy (D)iamond is a tribute to SYD Barrett by the band.

Pink Floyd, wish I could have seen them perform live. I grew up in the 70's. This was written about and dedicated to Syd Barrett. Syd unfortunately left the band and the rest is history. I really miss Richard Wright...his talent, skill, and natural ability to become one with his keyboards is unsurpassed.

I was privileged to first see them in 1973 and quite a few times after culminating in the Pulse concert in London in 1994. Sadly by 1973, Syd had already left the band. As someone reaching the end of the road I am heartened that later generations have enjoyed and kept the band alive.

Just a side note, and a sad one really. The 4 Backing Singers were Durga McBroom, Sam Brown and her mother Vicki Brown, and Clare Torry. Torry was the studio vocalist on 'Great Gig in the Sky'. McBroom was on several of the major tours Pink Floyd did, as was Sam Brown. Vicki Brown was a session singer I believe for many years, but she actually had Breast Cancer during this particular concert and died about a year later. Pink Floyd are my GOAT. Great reaction guys, and your comments are spot on.

This is a tribute to Syd Barrett, an original member of Pink Floyd - notice the title, Shine On You Crazy Diamond. He was their lead guitarist and wrote most of their early hits, but he gradually went nuts and was kicked out of the band in 1968, three years after the group started. Drugs played a big role in his mental illness.😀 Greetings from Norway.

This song was released in 1975... it still sounds strong today!🔥⚡
Roger Waters (bass) wrote the lyrics about his friend Syd Barrett, who formed & named Pink Floyd in 1965... he was out of the band by 1968 because of his mental health deterioration ("crazy diamond")
Roger Waters had left Pink Floyd in '84... so he was not in this performance. David Gilmour (guitar) still did a stellar job guiding Pink Floyd forward w/ classic members Nick Mason (drums) & Rick Wright (keyboards)

I don't know if you're familiar with the story behind this song. The group's founding member, original guitarist/singer/songwriter Syd Barrett's nickname was Crazy Diamond. During the production of their second album, Syd went on an acid trip that he basically never came back from. His amazing songwriting ability just completely left him and his behavior became so erratic that the rest of the group had no choice but to remove him from the band. He became a virtual recluse, and one of rock's most famous drug casualties. They wrote this song about him for their brilliant 1975 album Wish You Were Here (my favorite Pink Floyd album). On the day they were recording this song, Syd actually showed up at the studio! The other band members hadn't seen him for years, and he looked so different, they almost didn't recognize him at first. He hung out with them for a while and listened to the work they were doing. Then, as suddenly as he appeared, he was gone. Supposedly nobody in the band ever saw him again. He died a few years ago, alone and just a shell of the brilliant musician he had once been. Listen to the lyrics in the song and you can hear and feel the heartbreak all the members felt singing this song about their former friend and leader. This song became their standard concert opener, and remained so up until the group ended. I got the chance to see Floyd live twice, and it was an incredible multi-media experience.

I never got to see them live but I did get to see Roger Waters live doing the Wall. I’d love to see David Gilmour live because for me he’s the heart of Floyd. You really need to do the entire Wish You Were Here because the songs literally bleed into each other and tell a story. It’s a tribute to Syd Barrett the original lead singer of Pink Floyd. It’s a long album but it’s well worth the time.

I knew the subject matter of the song before I heard it the whole way through, so I always instinctively interpreted it as ominously tragic. But you're right to point out that there is a soothing quality about the opening of the song as well that was lost on me until you mentioned it; keep up the good work!
