The problem is that to fully appreciate Pink Floyd, you have to listen to each album whole. For example, the song you just watched, "Another Brick In the Wall (part 2)" is from the Pink Floyd album, "The Wall." And the video you watched was from the movie, "The Wall."
Each Pink Floyd album is a work of art, in that each album kind of has a thematic unity. The Pink Floyd album, "The Wall," is kind of like a Rock opera - there's a story arc that each song follows. The story is about a Rock & Roll Star named "Pink." And each song deals with the deep dark things that people hide behind walls (both mental and physical). The songs deal with topics like child abuse, drug addiction, depression, spousal infidelity, spousal abuse, racism, suicide, and more - all while following the life of the character, "Pink."

It's a commentary on the school system and how it stifles individuality in favour of producing adults that will follow the rules and confirm and the theme is brilliantly imagined in the meat grinder scene. A lot of the lyrics they produce are pure poetry.

Middle school was literally what you see in the video for me. We had to wear the same uniforms, walk in single file lines, and I even remember me getting called out by the teacher for doodling or something. It even got to the point where we were the teachers would get on us if we ate something they didn't approve of at lunch. I remember them walking around the lunch room constantly to make sure. It was a HUGE culture shock when I went to high school and saw that school doesn't have to be like that.

You've just come across one of the heavier bands in rock in terms of subject matter complexity and musicianship. They are definitely a sound of their own. This is a film clip from the movie "The Wall" based on their classic 1979 album of the same name... One of the biggest selling albums of all time. Check out another classic of theirs "Time" from the Dark Side of the Moon album. An album considered by many critics as one of the best rock albums ever recorded. This is a deep dark rabbit hole should you decide to venture down it. But it's also some of the most amazing thought-provoking soul stirring music you'll ever hear.

This is actually not the original version of the song from the album The Wall. This version was re-recorded for the movie The Wall, and all the visuals are from the scene in the movie where it appears. The soundtrack of the film has never been officially released, which is interesting because all of the songs in the movie are re-recordings or remixes of the original album versions and are, in some cases, VERY different from the originals. There are bootlegs available. I have a copy that is of excellent quality. Pink Floyd began in the mid-60s as a British psychedelic group. Their original leader, Syd Barrett, had drug problems which led to a psychological breakdown that basically ended his career. The group later morphed into more of a progressive rock group (some would say THE progressive rock group) and have been HUGELY influential. But because of Barrett, they have often used mental issues and psychological problems as the theme of many of their albums. Their catalog is a very large rabbit hole, and a lot of the music is very deep, dark and politically charged. Too many songs to try and make recommendations, but their most well-known albums are Dark Side Of The Moon, The Wall and Wish You Were Here (my personal favorite).

The education in England at this time suppressed a child’s individual creative thinking .Roger waters see this as a production line and not for the better in English society. Roger waters had a deep resentment to governing bodies who’s aim was to create an uniformed English society free from independent ideas .

"The Wall" is a concept album and must be listened to in it's entirety to understand the meaning of all of the songs....taken out and watched like this without knowing anything about the songs leading up to this song is very confusing. But it's worth the deep dive into genius of Pink Floyd if you so choose to do so. They also made the movie, "The Wall" which is actually where this video is taken from. It's a very sad and somewhat 'hard' movie to watch since it takes a deep look into many themes that can be difficult to talk about...but must be addressed. I really hope you take a deep look into the album and the band. Please review "Wish You Were Here" by them as well.

Pink Floyd: Live Pulse Concert "Comfortably Numb" (1994) and "Echoes" in Pompeii Italy (Live from 1972). Strange that you're a singer and never heard of PF. They are school masters, musially speaking, that is. As for the content, it's a critic of the old british school system using ancient methods of teaching. The meat grinder is symbolic of how the system "grinds" kids to learn what it wants, not necessarily what the kids need.

Schools here in the uk are institutions which prepare the working class for factory work especially so back in the 60tys 70tys and 80tys, The school breaks and destroys the individual and produces a mindless worker. Pink Floyd was showing the loss of the individual and the creation of food as the working classes are the life givers of the country, first the the spirit is our individuality and he shows that going first, following like lemmings and siting still and quiet, the face makes us look like an individual so we see the faces go next, the meat grinder is symbolic for the death of the individual for the benefit of society, Prince Philip ( the old man married to the Queen) called us working class useless eaters, so Pink Floyd flipped him off and showed we are the food producers, and you kill us early, the miners died young to keep them warm, it’s really powerful when you put in into content of the time it was written and the political landscape of that time. loved Pink Floyd growing up, Hay you is my favorite, he also writes anti war songs but they are different to most, The final cut the album is called. Pink Floyd was outspoken and fearless, just like Tom Macdonald. Blessings both.

Its total BS that people of colour are boxed in to and only listen to (C)RAP music! We are working towards a world society where colour and ethnicity are irrelevant, and sharing our different musical culture has to be a part of that surely?

As the others already said, this is part of a vast story called "The wall" let me break it down what that's all about.
When Pink Floyd were touring to support the "Animals" album during one of the final shows they played, bass player, lead vocalist Roger Waters actually spat at a fan and directly afterwards was going "What did I do THAT for?" And so the idea began forming in his mind with how the touring life of a professional musician robs them of all humanity and that in order to save the audience, there needed to be a Wall between the band and the audience.
So when the tour wrapped up and the band reconvened in a studio to start working on their next album, Waters came up with two Concepts "The Pros and Cons of Hitch hiking" and "Bricks in the wall" The other bandmembers who also had experienced what Waters went through during the tour, went with the second one where the main theme was Alienation.
The story is about a professional musician called "Pink Floyd" who is the record Company's cash cow, (A theme Pink Floyd used a LOT in their songs "Welcome to the machine", "Have a cigar") who after yet another night of having played a city he's not familiar with, finds himself in his hotel room, the only refuge from the machine he is part of and he starts to reflect on who constructed the wall around him he cannot escape from.
    - Was it his parents, his father went to war and never returned, his mother spoiled him but at the same time never granted him any freedom?
    - Was it the teachers at school who never even granted him freedom of expression? (As detailed in this song)
    - Was it his wife who never understood what he is going through and is seeing other men behind his back?
    - Was it the record company who even when he was found in cardiac arrest insisted on him playing the upcoming show rather than send him to a hospital, only because there's so much money at stake and they can't allow a lawsuit to happen? (As detailed in "Comfortably numb")
OR and that's how the story ends...
    - Was he himself to blame for all of that? The Album ends with a song in which he puts himself on trial and the crime he committed was that he showed feelings and is convicted to permanent exposure.

School puts the kids through the meat grinder. Some kids lose creativity when told what to do all the time. Very metaphorical.

Think about the casting call for those kids... "We're looking for kids who like to overturn their school desks, smash school windows, and break shit up with hammers." The line probably went down the street and around the block.

Pink Floyd is a rabbit hole you will never regret jumping into for sure but do yourselves the favor of shutting off the world for a bit and watch the movie. Have a great day you two.
