I’m sure others here have mentioned it already, but this song is just a cog in the wheel of an entire album that has to do with mainly one subject. One of the original members, Syd Barrett, who lost his mind and then his health, and this album is about their journey with him into the music business. Taken out of context and listening to just the song, really does it no justice as the entire album should be listened to start to finish

Do a Live Live - Delicate Sound of Thunder, Pulse, Remember That Night, but especially Live in Pompeii (The newer one, not the older one).
The song is about former band member Syd Barrett - who ended up with mental illness.

By the way, you have the perfect backdrop for another Pink Floyd song (with an official music video): Marooned. It's an instrumental song without lyrics, but Pink Floyd won a Grammy for it in 1995. Really beautiful guitar by David Gilmour - try...

You two recognized the saxophone when it first came in. It's actually two horns, both played by the same guy, Dick Parry. First one was a baritone, followed by a tenor sax.
A requiem mass in progressive rock.

Like A LOT of their songs this was about Syd Barrett.
Very good album, you have to listen to the title track, wish you were here. Also about Syd.
There are so many pink Floyd songs you need to hear. A few notches below megadeth, actually. Same with led zeppelin.
Actually I should just send you my old mp3 player.

If you have lost friends to drugs, then you should recognize this. Looking at someone you love(d) 'with black holes in their eyes' and remembering all the lost potential taken away by their addiction/mental breakdown. You lovingly wish that they could pull themselves together, but then become sad, because you know recovery is out of reach. 'Come on, you legend...' perhaps they can find peace in their new life?

Thanks for the reaction. Your into some next level music with the Floyd. When the band was formed their lead singer, songwriter and guitarist was Syd Barrett. He was very charismatic and handsome. But he went mad after their first album, some say do to LSD. They were young and ambitious and replaced/left him. Getting his friend David Gilmour (who is playing guitar on this song) to fill his shoes.. They struggled trying to find their way for about 6 years. (Barret left a huge hole) Finally they found their voice and hit it big with DSOTM. They struggled in the studio for the next album and inspiration (Lots of pressure from the label). One day an overweight man with a shaved head and a lost look in the eyes showed up. They kinda ignored him each thinking he was with someone else. Finally one of them recognized him and it was Syd. They were all in shock at what he'd become. His story, their guilt of leaving him on their quest for stardom and the music biz is the inspiration they finally found for the album. I think they all struggle with wishing they'd have done more to help him. I may have got some small bit's wrong but thats pretty much the story.

Good choice -- the album as a whole is so much more, but this was a nice selection. When people aren't used to Pink Floyd, I think they're sometimes a little startled by how long some of the more instrumental pieces are -- this one was definitely a slow burn, but with such a great vocal payoff in the 2nd half.

Hearing this song for the first time was an awakening. I first heard it in 1976, but the way the keyboard and guitar work off each other is so astoundingly beautiful that it almost makes me weep even after all these years. This is my favourite Pink Floyd song.
Next one you should check out is Sheep from the Animals album.

This is the first 5 parts of the whole song, there are 9 parts total, so it would be great if you guys would react to parts 6-9.
This song IS recognized by many as a masterpiece, it's dedicated to the bands good friend and bandmate Syd Barrett. Syd Barrett was one of the founding members of Pink Floyd, he's the "Crazy Diamond". The whole album that the song is on is about Syd, the "Wish You Were Here" album!
Unfortunately, he got heavily into mind altering drugs that destroyed his brain and he was also thought to have developed schizophrenia, around the same time. By the beginning of 1968 Barrett was forced to leave the band because he could no longer performed.
This was a huge blow to the guys in the band, they all loved Syd and thought of him as a musical genius, and they were the closet of friends. Another friend of Syd's, and the band, was David Gilmour, Gilmour being a guitarist and a singer would jam with the band on many occasions over the years.
There were quite a few times that Syd could not perform, and David would step in and do all of Syds guitar parts and singing. David Gilmour eventually replaced Syd permanently in 1968, he would stay with PF until the end in 2006.
Syd Barrett was the one who came up with the bands' name in 1964. Pink Floyds roots are in Blues, (just like every other Rock band that came out of England in the 1960s). Barrett came up with the name, Pink Floyd, from two obscure American Blues guitar players from the 1920s and 30s,.... PINK Anderson and FLOYD Council.

Congratulations! You have joined the rest of us who have been initiated into the pure ethereal beauty that is Pink Floyd. What you are listening to is not frightening. It is the deep impact of music on humans and it connects us with the planet. It is deeply spiritual. Try listening to it again and watch the earth from the window of a spaceship. The track itself is a lament for Syd Barrett, who suffered so badly with mental health problems he could no longer be the incredible influence he was on the band.
If you want to explore more of their music, just you wait until you hear the female vocal on dark side of the moon. The vocalist tells a story without singing a single word. It is going to blow you awaaaaaaaay :) x

This song is perfection as is the whole album, not a weak second in it. I was always puzzled that people consider Dark Side of the Moon to be their best album. To me Wish you were here is unrivalled and anything else by Pink Floyd a distant second.

I would very much like to see your reactions to "Control" by POE off their Haunted album.
The entire album merits its own show, as it tells a story from beginning to end and has an attachment to a book titled "House of Leaves", but that is another story.

It's because he doesn't plug his guitar into an amplifier,,, he plugs it directly into his soul.
Hard to find another player who genuinly can take you on so many different paths of your own feelings.
He is pretty much the only one who can do this.

The song was written for Syd Barrett, a founder of the band and dear friend, who lost his mind due to mental illness and drugs; the entire album (Wish You Were Here) is a masterpiece. The second half of the song (parts 5-9) is at the end of the album. Would be great if you guys could do a dive into Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here albums, in their entirety, as they are "concept" albums and are intended to be heard as a whole without interruption; the songs flow into each other. Thanks for a great reaction to this great song. True, the video is distracting, imo.

Syd was a musical genius, such a loss when he started slipping into madness, but David is such phenomenal musician, writer and composer that I can't imagine Pink Floyd becoming what they did without him.
