    If you read about Syd Barrett, their dear friend, who started Pink Floyd with Roger Waters (base player and major lyricist) and Syd was charismatic and brilliant but he began to literally lose his mind and became unreliable so they replaced him with the guitar god David Gilmour........this is their homage to Syd.........re-listen knowing this info and the lyrics will make total sense........it is an lyrical undertone to a lot of their music a is Roger's childhood with an overprotective mother after the loss of his father in the war......Losing Syd was traumatic to all of them as they were close friends. Interesting fact: When they were recording this, having not seen Syd or knew where he was..........he showed up at the studio out of the blue....it's a truly trgic story.

      Pink Floyd was a psychedelic band originally and Sid it is said would be off his face and he would gradually loosen the strings on his guitar until it was unplayeable

      It should be said, as a cautionary tale, that Syd Barrett, a budding rock star, was surrounded with “hangers on” as they say in Britain, who supplied drugs to Syd and the thought is that he lost his mind taking too much LSD and lost the ability to perform or write any more music.

    • @drhust1955
      @drhust1955 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Syd liked LSD too much. However, that wasn’t the cause of his psychotic break. Allegedly, he had Schizophrenia. It seems clearly that is what happened. So tragic but what a genius.

    • @dawnekay1567
      @dawnekay1567 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@drhust1955 I think the PF members felt his loss in a very deep way.........that's why I love the lyrics so much they saw his genius slip away right in front of their eyes and were helpless to stop it. He was always the ghostly member of PF.

    Absolute certified masterpiece. Their best, IMO. This song is a tribute to their former childhood friend and bandmate, Syd Barrett, who was an original and influential member. He suffered a mental break, (at times) profound mental illness and was institutionalized for periods of time. Their love for their missing brother is evident in the lyrics. They dedicated a lot of their material to him. The video and live versions (Pulse concert) are amazing.✌

    "You make it how you make it" - My man, that is a perfect way to describe a big part of what makes Pink Floyd so unique, especially with their longer instrumental pieces. They take you on a trip - that trip is guided by the band's intent and feelings when they wrote the song, but it's always your own unique trip, because of what you bring with you. Another great reaction, peace and love from Canada!

    This song, and the whole "Wish You Were Here" album, is about Pink the bands good friend and bandmate Syd Barrett. He was one of the founding members of Pink Floyd in 1964, but he was forced to leave the band by the end of 1967, due to massive use of mind-altering drugs like LSD and others. He was also showing signs of schizophrenia.
    Syd's good friend, David Gilmour replaced him as the guitarist and lead singer of Pink Floyd in 1968.
    Syd Barrett is the "Diamond" they're referring to in this song. Also, they have made numerous mentions of Syd in many of their songs. Shout out to Pink Floyd for paying Syd Barrett his full share of Pink Floyds proceeds, (which is millions and millions of $), for the rest of his life, which ended in 2006.

    Growing up with Pink Floyd was experiencing LIFE as you listened. Things you were doing. Things you saw both with your eyes & with your Mind's eye. Times you had. Rainy days when certain songs were playing. Us & Them reminds me of Christmas because of memory listening to that song. This album reminds me of Sub School in the Navy. It had just come out & was brand new. A summer day is Dogs. This song driving down a country road with pine bows weighted down with fresh snow & pure white is everywhere. Brightly sun lit. You guys have to get out & live & take the music with you. I walked around an island listening to this through a Walkman. Another memory flashing in my mind. I have done a lot of artwork listening to Pink Floyd also. Echoes specifically.

    One aspect that a lot of people don't know about this particular track is the phenomenal work done in the studio on the original recording tapes.
    On your video, at 5:19, when the drums come in, did you notice that the reverb (echo) precedes the drum hits and the guitar chords?
    Normally the reverb follows, but here it also precedes the chords. This effect may seem simple to achieve with digital technology, but with magnetic tapes it was much more complicated. To achieve this, they played the magnetic tapes in reverse, then added the desired effects on another tape and finally remixed the two tapes.
    There was a BBC documentary outlining the studio work done on this and other tracks, but TH-cam pulled it following a complaint from Steve Levine.
    The name of the documentary was: (Pink Floyd - Multi-Track Song Analysis - BBC The Record Producers).

    • @claudepage6214
      @claudepage6214 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I saw this documentary a few months ago, before it was taken down by TH-cam.
      What you say about the reverse echo is absolutely true. You could hear the original tracks without the effects, which differs greatly from the final result on the album.
      My favorite part of the documentary was the one about (The Great Gig in the Sky).
      You could hear excerpts from NASA astronaut communications recordings, which were originally to accompany Richard Wright's keyboard.
      It also featured the 2 1/2 takes of Clare Torry's vocals, without the added effects, used to produce the final product we're used to listening to.

I bought these albums when first released in 1975 and 1973, respectively. I was in my late teens and have never tired of listening to them. The 70s and 80s especially, produced a broad and masterful legacy of music that will live on forever as successive generations come to appreciate what seems no longer to be produced by current groups. I grew up listening and going to Pink Floyd concert. Yes you make Pink Floyd word and music what you want; and every time you hear it, your view will never be the same. High or tripping Floyd's the way to go.

    This was a song to smoke a joint to. The high would build with the song. By the time the lyrics start, you are in full flight.

    I love just playing along to a backing track version of this song, its so wonderful to improvise to, and the amount of different ideas you can employ thanks to the different flavors of the soundscape only makes it better.
    Literally could play this song for hours non-stop... and have

    If y’all wanna see this live check out their 1994 Pulse Concert version. It’s unreal. The 13:25 length one by the official Pink Floyd channel.

    4:57 Listen to "The Dark Side Of The Moon" in it' entirety. It's pretty much a 40 minute continuous album. They were true magicians not just musicians 👏Awesome reaction!
    It would be epic to see you do the full album on Patreon or a 3 Part TH-cam video. Might as well do both lol 🙌

    This is the first song they played at their Pulse Concert...no easy song to warm up with, get in a flow...no, they went right in to this masterpiece...definitely worth checking out

    This song and whole album really is about pink floyds original guitarest/songwriter/front man Syd Barrett who lost his mind due to too much lsd in a short period of time and possible schizophrenia.
    You guy's should check out their live stuff from Live in Pompeii 1972.

    Some PF favorites: Shine On You Crazy Diamond (parts VI-IX) Empty Spaces/Young Lust (from "The Wall") Learning to Fly (from "A Momentary Lapse of Reason") Echoes (full version from "Meddle"--instead of an edited one from "best of" collections) Dogs, Sheep, or Pigs (three different ones), from "Animals" What Do You Want From Me? (from "The Division Bell") Obscured By Clouds/When You're In (from "Obscured By Clouds") Any Colour You Like (from "Dark Side of the Moon")

    Floyd is transcendent and is deeper than any music ever made. This music is amazing and has more depth than anything before or after. I hope it isn't over, and new musicians aren't afraid to delve this deep again...I believe will. Those are real drums, real horns, that is a real guitar, that is singing without autotune...brilliant. btw Time by them is extraordinary good and will change your life.

    Now you need to keep going track by track in order. This album as well as Animals are meant to be heard from start to finish no pausing. Both masterpieces, my 2 fav P.Floyd albums.

    Pink Floyd create their own musical landscape and take the listener on a journey through it. Their long intros and slow buildups force you to slow down and connect with the music.

    Cool, Recklezz kids -- y'all got some patience for this... (yep - as said by others, it's all about Syd -- as have been many - including songs on Dark Side of the Moon, and especially the song "Wish you were here)" -- I really like your reactions.. and look forward to more .. thank you!

    This is a great song that opens up the album Wish You Were Here, which so many have already pointed out is about Syd Barrett, a founding member of Pink Floyd. It's mellow, and it speaks. And I appreciate how you say that it speaks to a person wherever they're at. It has its own focus, yes, telling Syd, the "crazy diamond," to shine on. But it's not chained up, and it doesn't chain the listener either. It allows listeners to make of it what they may. I'll echo the others here who suggest listening to the second half of the song (parts 6-9), which closes out the album. I think you've already reacted to songs on this album already, so it may be a bit late for a whole album reaction, but that's no big deal (you can do that anytime you want). Thanks again for what you do!
