"David Gilmour can do more with one note than most other guitar players can do with the whole fretboard.” -- Dave Mustaine (guitarist for Metallica; Megadeth)
I met David Gilmour in 1984 back stage at a concert in Hollywood Calif. He gave me a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know, and I know all the great ones.
They wouldn’t say why he left just that he left to spend time with his mum and to work on himself. I don’t think his mental issues were from drugs but no doubt they didn’t help lol.
Gilmour has said that he didn't believe that drugs were the cause for Syd's mental collapse, although he felt that it's possible that they might have sped up a process that eventually would have occurred anyway.
Syd would have times where he stood on stage and either wouldn't sing or play and would just stare into the distance or he would play the wrong thing while refusing to sing. Syd was booted from the band because he became unreliable. I think it was a combination of drugs and mental issues. During the recording of the "Wish You Were Here" album, Syd randomly showed up, overweight with his head and eyebrows shaved. Apparently none of them recognized him at first.
@@PaleHorseShabuShabu I've never heard it said so, but I always wondered if it wasn't Syd that was the genesis of this song: "So ya thought ya might like to go to the show To feel the warm thrill of confusion, that space cadet glow I've got some bad news for you sunshine Pink isn't well, he stayed back at the hotel And they sent us along as a surrogate band We're gonna find out where you fans really stand..."
Have you ever heard anything so smooth as David Gilmore on guitar along with the other original Floyd members Nick Mason on drums and Richard Wright on keyboards!
I still remember when I first heard this whenit came out.I came home high at 3 in the morning went up to bed and turned on an FM station .They were just starting this album. I didnt sleep until the album was over.
They will be never be another pink floyd. Every member plays a part and can not be replicated. I always love Dave’s playing. I don’t think Ive heard a more tasteful player. He’s the master for a reason
When this album came out in the mid-70's, we kids learned early on that you could safely trip from the comfort of your own home, without the need to use harsh chemicals or abrasives... 😎☯❤☮
According to the vast majority of big name guitar players, they have Gilmour ranked 1st. In a Legendary Guitar Player's Council of 10, David Gilmour would be the Chairman of said Council and would sit at the head of the table. The other 9 members are up for a debate.
This song was written about Pink Floyd's original singer/songwriter Syd Barrett. Barrett by most accounts suffered from schizophrenia and had also burned himself out on psychedelic's (largely on LSD) while playing the London underground music scene of the mid & late 60's. Barrett was the band's frontman in 1965, 66, & 67, but his behavior became increasingly erratic, and he left Pink Floyd in 1968, and would spend time in a mental institution. On June 5th, 1975, with none of the members of the band having seen Barrett for years, he showed up at Abbey Road Studios during Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" sessions unannounced, and in a touch of irony watched as the band did the final mix for "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" which had been written about Barrett in the words of Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmore being "a mad genius."
That was David Gilmore on guitar and vocals. Roger Waters was not with the band at this point in time. I look forward to your reactions to Candy Dulfer (not sure about the spelling)
@@MeStevely OK - When I wrote that I might’ve been thinking that certain words, like favor or labor are spelled with the “our” in GB and, maybe, that also applied to surnames. Then again, maybe not. Keep well my friend.

Great reaction, thanks for doing it. (For Jon, just as a precautionary measure you should have your eyes tested, just a vision test to see if you need glasses. I say this because a couple of times you were squinting and glasses might help with that. I'm not qualified in that area, just wanting to look out for you. I went 30 years before finding out I needed glasses.) There is 100% chance that I'm wrong and you were just getting into the music, but never hurts to be sure.

The ultimate LSD song. Designed, written, and composed for just such an event. But of course, that is Pink Floyd in general. "Like black holes in the sky". Which is exactly what your eyes look like when under the awesome influence of shrooms/LSD.
Not at all. This was written as a tribute to Syd Barrett. The 9 parts are musical representations of the highs and lows of his life's journey to that point and the lyrics are about his downfall and dichotomy that he became. Full of life and promise but empty due to his mental illness and drug abuse. What was left when catatonic was his eyes ring like black holes in the skies.
@@fortch17 They are very creative with double entendre lyrics. This song works both ways, if you know the back story. If not, it make ns an excellent tripping song. When you are on LSD, everybody has HUGE black-hole eyes when your pupils take over the rest of your eyes. 100% of Pink Floyd is psychedelic, no matter the root of the song. Very creative. It's really funny to watch black folks crying to "Time", like it has some kind of deeper meaning. Take some LSD, put on some headphones, enjoy. Never gets old.
Hmm, I actually never made the connection between that line and the use of psychedelics, but now that you mentioned it I wouldn't rule it out. As you say, hugely dilated pupils is typical while being under the influence of psychedelics.
David Gilmour is the Lord of the Strings. BTW, this song is about one of the original founders who named the band after Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. Sid Barrett who blew his brain out on LSD.
love this song, about their original singer Syd Barrett, who had a mental breakdown not long after their first album and left the band and went into seclusion for most his life
LSD is a bunch of fun and very good at cleaning the trash out of you brain, but Syd tried living on it daily. Like every other form of buzz out there, not a good thing. Especially alcohol.
Oh memories of high school again. Back in my senior year I worked part time as a stock boy in a womens clothing store.
