  • As I shoot more with the Canon EOS R5 C I am realizing how special and important this camera is for filmmakers, videographers, content creators and Canon's lineup. I discuss why this is the case based on Canon's recent releases, lenses, and compare the R5C with the Canon C70 and Sony FX3.

    I have just had two shoots with the R5C (using 4K) - after a couple prior shoots with my R6 - and WOW WOW WOW - the images in video (and photo) are phenomenal (and I thought the R6 was fantastic). I think it's default AF was slightly slower in the R5C than R6 UNTIL I played with the manual AF settings and chose a +3 of increase on responsiveness - and it's fast (and I love the modularity). I also came armed with 7 batteries for both - expecting to frantically change - and only used 1.5 batteries on both shoots. The LPE6N batteries last longer than the LPE6. With all the comparisons to the C70 - I think C70 is more run and gun if you don't need photo - but really? no need for photo? - but I would rather have all the offerings of RC5 that afford a more reliably sharper image with more dynamic range (AKA 8K full frame and better AF) BUT may require a few steps to get - than use a C70 which sounds like a video-only camera that offers ease over image relative to RC5. After seeing all the comparisons, I wonder: Is C70 for the lazier shooter willing to put ease over image? ;)

      I have a SmallRig battery pack holder on both my RS2 gimbal and rig. They both hold an Anker 26,800mAh battery that powers the R5C via USB-C just fine (using an old Canon LPE6N-not an H). I’ve used it off/on for b-roll, roughly 170 clips at the end of a wedding day, and the battery lasts. I’m sure a DTAP solution would last much longer but know that it’s not your only option 😊

    Hi Josh . It is very interesting to watch your videos regularly . I have both cameras R5 and R5C , the question is how can I use my new R5C as I used my R5 in mode 4K HQ(Ufine) right to watch it on tv without editing . I tried my R5C in all tv watchable formats without editing but I couldn’t get the same sharpness quality as R5 ?

    I totally agree with you for same reason.
    I’m using RF 28-70mm f2. I think this is very important lens for personal filmmaking too but, before R5C we couldn’t use it with it’s full video potential. eos R low resolution and 4k huge crop, R5, R6 overheating, C70 is a lot better and perfectly video centered. But 1.5x crop also. I also have two C70 but I’m gonna use R5C as my A cam because it’s absolute image quality throughout 8k RAW, full frame image sensor with fantastic RF lenses.

    Hi Josh!
    Thank you very much for your videos on the R5C. Great content!
    I've started following your channel recently when I was looking about some info about the Canon Mount Adapter EF RF 0.71x.
    So here is the situation. I just do some personal video projects and commercial and still life projects (portfolio).
    I worked as a professional for 8 years although 2 years ago I moved to UK and I stopped being a freelance.
    I have the EOS R, the Ninja V and the Viltrox EF RF 0.71x. Ninja V for 10bit 422 in ProRes HQ, which is perfect for grading.
    Unfortunately the R is limited in terms of framerate and dynamic range (same sensor as 5D IV, which I own).
    In terms of lenses I have all Canon original EF lenses, L series: 14mm, 35 1.4, 50 1.2 and a 85mm 1.8 and a Sigma 105mm 2.8 Macro with IS.
    I also have VMount battery plate and a FXLion Nano One plus various high capacity NP-F batteries.
    I'm considering the R5C or the R5. I prefer to use an external monitor and recorder, the camera screens are too small in my opinion for my shooting style, but sometimes I could use it when I want to be super light.
    I would like to keep using the Ninja V but on Atomos website I'm seeing just capable of recording RAW formats via HDMI on the R5C? This is super weird. There's no mention of normal ProRes in the list.
    So I'm confused what would be the right choice.
    I mainly need:
    - A good 4K, 60FPS would be perfect and maybe having the possibility to shoot higher framerates (120FPS or even more) for slow-mo
    - Chance to pair the camera with the speed booster to reduce any crop that could occur at some resolution/framerates
    - Ability to record normal ProRes on the Ninja V while having the possibility to record ProRes RAW (not at 8K, it would be impossible for me to manage)
    - My shooting style is very short clips (max 30 seconds in the worst case scenario) as I tend to film just the scenes I need. I could do timelapses but probably on the Ninja V.
    - Option to shoot 10bit 422 internally would be great, hopefully not in a heavy compressed format.
    My concerns:
    - No ProRes RAW compatibility on Resolve and lack of normal ProRes recording/output via HDMI on the R5C
    - Not sure if I can use the NInja V with the R5C due to only ProRes RAW available as HDMI recording
    - Would be useful having the Viltrox EF RF 0.71x paired with the R5C or R5?
    On Atomos website the R5 seems to have more formats available via HDMI and I don't understand why honestly.
    So many options nowadays but because of that compatibility seems to be just be only paper sometimes.
    Should I go for the R5 or R5C? That the million dollar questions (it would be a 4.5K£ question to be more precise :D )
    Thanks in advance and sorry for the long worded post, I tried to be as details as possible!
    Andrea

      Update: I have sent an email to Atomos to shed some light about compatibility with R5C, hopefully I'll receive a response about this soon.

    If Canon allowed companies like TASCAM, Rode, Deity, DJI to make hot shoe accessories this would be killer. Imagine Rode having a Wireless GO II that plugs into the hot shoe, for DJI releasing a adapter for their DJI Wireless mic. Would love to see Rode update their Stereo Videomic X with hotshoe adapters for Canon and Sony.
    Also, the S16 RAW mode on the R5C seems excellent and pairs well with RF 70-200.

    Hi Josh! We just got the camera today, and because it’s so new, it’s hard to find answers about the button layouts online (yes I just took it home I had not time to read the manual, I swear I will read it tomorrow). Just wondering, maybe you are reading this and can answer. So, in video mode I can’t assign the shutter speed to any of the three wheels. Is that so, or am I doing something wrong? I come from Canon 5diii, and would lie to use the same buttons for video as for photo (the shutter is properly assigned in photo mode to the top, to the index finger). Another issue is in video mode whatever I assign to the back wheel it doesn’t do anything. That’s weird also, as it works in the menus and in photo mode as well. Thank you if you see this and have the time to answer. I like your videos! :)

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don’t need to adjust the shutter speed in video. You set the shutter angle to 180 degrees and you’re good. As far as I know you can’t assign anything to the back wheel in video mode. Kind of a bummer.

    • @DrugreporterTV
      @DrugreporterTV 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Josh_Sattin Thank you for the fast answer! Sometimes I do bring up the shutter speed, if it's too bright outside, and I don't want to bring up the aperture to keep shallow depth of field (and I don't have ND filter). I am used to that and it works fine. But I can live with this, if I want to do it that much, I do it from the touchscreen. Plus I will get an EF-Rf adapter with ND filter and that will solve the issue even better. I guess they will be able to fix the back wheel problem with a firmware update.

    • @pharmatographist
      @pharmatographist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DrugreporterTV I second Josh; use shutter angle and get the in-line ND (I have the Canon EF to RF one). However, the wheel doesn’t seem to be programmable for anything in video mode. If you keep shutter speed, program your FUNC 11 button to FUNC and u can quickly press it multiple times until it’s on shutter speed, then use the top shutter speed dial to quickly change it, then hit SET to lock it in
