    Great review and amazing short! Such creativity and nice to see you showcasing the R5C video capabilities through your film. I think this camera may be the perfect balance for what I currently need. For the price you really can't go wrong. As usual it's the glass, the crew and your imagination and skill that usually makes all the difference. Thanks for the hard work and a great preview of the R5C!

    Your short at the beginning is all everyone needs to know about this camera's capabilities: nice work.
    And that leads right into: yes, planning, design, care and skills are 85-90% of the result.
    Thanks for keeping it real.

    Very well put together video and that film is absolutely stunning. I would love to see a more in depth video on how you achieved some of the lighting in that film as well as a look at the colour grading process. I loved your point about being able to create a similar look on any modern camera but an in depth video on everything that went into creating that stunning look would be amazing.

    • @vistek
      @vistek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Tech Space! The lighting was actually a lot simpler than you’d think. We only had a few fixtures. Stick a light in a window and walk away. The only spot where I did more than that was a skypanel s60 through a 6x6 diffusion in the red dress scene. Then lots of negative fill.

    Beautifully filmed. Great short! Very thorough review. Much appreciated! Some professional videographers do run and gun and rely on IBIS. How does the camera work with digital + lens stabilization? Also, is there anyway around the need to switch if you're in film mode and want to take a quick picture. Is there a screen capture-type thing? Thank you! And well done!

    Beautiful video! What method of noise reduction do you prefer?

    • @vistek
      @vistek  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Matt. TBH I’m not the expert in that area. I’ve toyed around with it but I’m not very knowledgeable. I know one of the secrets is to isolate the shadows and lower mids and only reduce the noise there - retaining the sharpness in the skin and highlights where there is less noise. I’ve tried AE, Resolve, and Neat. In the end, my strategy has either been to over expose and crush out the noise or hand it off to a competent Colorist to do it properly.

    Thank you for the review! I’m wondering does it shoot 4K RAW? I’m considering the camera but am worried about the huge 8k file sizes and having to buy so many hard drives and media. 8k feels a bit overkill for my needs personally, however I do like shooting RAW so would love it if this camera did 4K raw it would save me a lot of headache. I use DaVinci Resolve so ProRes RAW via Atomos not an option bc of all the transposing. Thanks for any insights,keep up the good work!

    • @vistek
      @vistek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Only question I have is battery life, everyone else is saying it’s a hog but you said it was reasonable. How much time were you getting and in what context? Thx!!!!

    • @vistek
      @vistek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks JLS! I think that if you’re doing doc work (which wouldn’t be the ideal use for this camera), you’d run into issues using LP-E6. I mean, LP-E6s are pretty lousy batteries at the best of times. We had a good amount of them, however and we’re able to cycle them out between takes as needed. I don’t recall the feeling that we were swapping out more than say, if I was shooting on an A7Siii or an SH1. Maybe we did 3-4 swaps for the day. Which, in my mind - for an 8K mirrorless camera, is quite good. Maybe my expectations are lower than other reviewers. In an actual professional context (if I owned the camera) I would have it set up for v-mount/gold mount power. That way you can run the camera all day + accessories on one or two charges at most.

    • @Malick333
      @Malick333 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vistek thanks again for so much practical detail. I’ve found my real world usage to be very different in reality than people who aren’t actually using these things in actual production scenarios.
      So Basically this tells me that in some situations (for me) having some extra LP-E6s will be fine (ie on a gimbal) and in other situations I’ll just use an external power source. Which is what I do when using my BMPCC4K.
      For me that’s why I really like hybrids, I have the option to scale up or have it super lean and inconspicuous.
      THANK YOU!

    • @EmeraldAudiovisual
      @EmeraldAudiovisual 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Malick333 The BMPCC4k is an absolute hog on batteries. My R5C hasn't arrived yet (should be arriving tomorrow), but I have a feeling the R5C might fare better. Either way, if the camera is being caged up, there is absolutely no issue running a V-mount or an Anker power bank on the setup and not having to worry about power anymore.

      Thank you Rata del Desierto! I wouldn't be too concerned about DR. From a practical POV both of those cameras are very similar and about as good as it gets for mirrorless cameras. Image quality is rather subjective, so that's up to you to decide what pleases you the most. Best of luck!

Though my heart is definitely with the more cinematic look, I'm concerned that the lack of full frame or 8K will make the C70 less optimal for commercial use (which includes frequent requests for vertical/in-feed/mutli-aspect ratio cuts) and not as "future-proof". What do you think I should get?

    • @vistek
      @vistek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’d be interested to see what other viewers think - but based on my experience with both cameras now, I think the C70 is still a very strong camera. 8K is nice, no question. But it’s really not necessary. It’s a nice to have kind of thing. The built in ND of the C70 also makes it a great (if not more suitable) product for pro use. The one clear reason to get the R5C is if you want both a video and proper photo camera.

      @@vistek Thanks so much. Really appreciate the thoughtful answer. One last question - if you were shooting a feature and you had to pick one, do you have a clear winner personally?

    • @vistek
      @vistek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@abnerqjames I think I'd end up going with the C70, simply because there are limited options for full frame cinema glass. Depending on the speed of production, and the subject matter - you may also really appreciate the internal ND. But ultimately there are so many factors in determining the right camera for your production that you probably have to weigh out several things.

    • @vistek
      @vistek  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi There - yes, some elements were shot in RAW but not all. Only those in which I wanted the full 8K or needed the extended dynamic range. Most of what you see is XFAVC; a good 90%. RAW is a bit over-kill for stuff like this. I can't remember precisely which clips were raw (it's been a while), but I do recall the stairwell being raw because I was getting lens vignetting with the ultra wide lens, and 8K allowed me to punch in for a vignette free shot. My suggestion is to save RAW for anytime you need the dynamic range or the digital zoom/reframing option. It's a very efficient RAW codec, but XFAVC is still a powerful 10 bit codec that should be more than enough for all your projects and at a fraction of the file size. If you are relatively in control of your lighting, there is little need to ever use RAW on any camera (save maybe for VFX integration).

    • @vistek
      @vistek  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a complicated question. RAW is not inherently LOG. When de-bayering in post, you can chose LOG or any other gamma profile. It just depends on how you are used to working. The dynamic range or any other attribute is unaffected by whatever profile you chose. Raw, is raw. You (the creator) just have to decide how you want to "view" it.

    If someone very specifically wants to shoot 8K60 (for the VR lens, if nothing else), is having a single CFexpress B an issue for redundancy, or do you generally feel CFexpress/SSD failure is a non-issue?
    I ask because this camera does not have HDMI 2.1, so even when the next generation of external recorders come out, it still won't be able to do redundant 8K60.

    • @vistek
      @vistek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Alexander - I'm sure other viewers / shooters can chime in with their thoughts here as well. I'm just gonna flex my opinion, but opinions can vary greatly. My feeling when it comes to using this camera is to be aware of unique nature of the situations in which you're using it. If I was a wedding shooter and I knew that I'd have to shoot for a long while before back ups - I'd want to make sure my camera had a back up or proxy capabilities.
      But I'm willing to guess you're not going to be shooting a 2 hour wedding with 8K VR. This means, like all other cinema productions, that you off load your card often, and use professional software like ShotPut Pro or Hedge vs the ol' drag & drop. Most card corruption issues come from the files not being closed out - which those programs effectively do. There is never a 2nd (back up) card for any film or commercial project I work on. One card, that we ensure we off load regularly, in a proper way, and double check the footage after import. Fortunately I've never had anything ever go wrong, but if it did, we'd be able to re-shoot on the day.

    • @vistek
      @vistek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Miguel. We had a set of 4 batteries and cycled through them. Definitely in a camera like this - especially shooting 8K, it’s going to eat through the LP-E6. I based my comment on the general understanding that the LP-E6s performed as expected or better than expected. But if someone is using this camera with a couple E6s and expecting them to last a few hours, I think that simply wouldn’t be possible. Either you want a large external source or a nice handful of E6s.

    • @KenyanGypsy
      @KenyanGypsy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vistek That is very interesting. LPE6's last tops 8 minutes on 4K when toggling between 60 and 24fps. The LPE6NH gets to about 30minutes (roughly) just while being on standby and taking a few shots. Then I get a warning and within 5 minutes of battery warning - its dead. I am seeing erratic reports online. Some boast 1hr10minutes, others like me are seeing unexplained battery drain and so far Canon has not been forthcoming or helpful to resolve or admit this. I think these are all first model bugs. To anyone interested , I would say to wait till they fix all these beta bugs.
