    Reach out to Red - make sure they are aware of your interest.
    You would be a great asset to their brand... You’re work is superb and the Komodo X would put you on a path to an even greater level excellence.
    Glad to come across your channel and I look forward to your future work.

    Great video! I’ve been using the R5 C since its release and I love it. I also have the R5 and enjoy using that as a photo camera, but in video mode there are things about it that have been a real challenge (the 30 minute record limit, lack of exposure tools like WFM or false color, no “face only” AF, and the inability to adjust WB while recording). I have to use an Atomos when shooting with the R5, but with it you cannot use Cinema Gamut and it doesn’t solve the “face only” issue. The R5 C solves all of these problems while offering even more. I shoot about 50/50 photo and video (though very rarely photo and video in the same gig), so they are great “backups” to each other. I also got the R7 when it was released as a backup body and C-cam for multi angle shoots, but while it doesn’t have a recording limit and the video quality is great, I do not like the different ergonomics-why didn’t they just put an APS-C sensor in an R5/6 body? I decided to sell the R7 and buy a second R5 C. For the type of work that I do, I am very happy with the system!

    • @HuFilms
      @HuFilms  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great write up there. Likewise, once I familiarised myself with the R5C’s system, it became so much easier than the R5. Apart from certain scenarios like wildlife. Glad it’s working out for you. Would love to try an R7 with my 500 lens.

  • @vividstudio4651
    @vividstudio4651 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thanks Hugh. Really great insights.
    We go through stages where we have to evolve and our craft needs to make those jumps too. In the past I would be fine with by-passing problems, rigging up gizmos to get something to do what it might not have been meant to do.
    But then you make the jump to another level. Boom. Suddenly you go from photographer to story teller. Suddenly the direction is clear. So yeah, sold a heap of gear, stepped up to a new level of cinema camera and have not felt this creative in years.
    Sometimes one camera can do that. Sometimes the comfort zone was your problem.

  • @alexfagard3618
    @alexfagard3618 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey Hugh, I suggest getting a magnetic USB-C cable. This way you can just keep the "dongle" part in the camera, and quickly attach the cable without potentially causing the port to break. Indeed these ports are very delicate.

    The R5C has slowly grown on me. Thanks to some great updates the battery life has improved (with caveats of course) the dynamic range, AF, and functionality has improved. If the canon Overlords could put Clog2 in it, man this thing would be absolutely nuts.

    I’ve been a photographer all my life and a professional for 12 years. I just bought the R5 C after my 5DSr got wet from a heavy downpour I was caught it suddenly. The rain went through my camera bag. I thought the camera bag was more water proof and the 5 DSr was well weather sealed. But nope, repair shop says it’s cooked. For the first time in 55 years of owning cameras, this is the first time my camera got damaged from anything.
    I would say this is the most complicated but highly functional camera, I’ve ever owned.
    Canon 90D, 6D, 5D Mark IV, R5 C, broken 5DSr. A bunch of EOS red line and regular lenses. No RF lenses. Several DJI drones, GoPro 10 Max.

      Hi Hugh,
      My battery setup for handheld is:
      - Smallrig wooden handle (left) 2222
      - Neewer QR plate adapter (I have loads of these around)
      - Core SWX Powercore Edge Link 70W
      I put the left handle on top of the 1/4” plate of the Edge link. Then the Neewer QR plate adapter on top of the left handle. And the QR plate goes under the R5C so I can quickly remove it from this handheld setup to tripod to gimbal or backpack. I use USBC port of the Edge link to R5C to power it.
      It’s a little heavy but when shooting handheld, this weight helps me remove the micro jitters but I shoot all day without stressing out about the battery life.
      Alternatively, I’m waiting on Power Junkie to ship their new PJ2.0 which claims to have 9V 2.5A and works for 8K60fps and this setup is much smaller.
      Check them out if it suits you!

    I have been tempted to go via Red, but With the R5C I just have way less things to carry, I did a test going to a colonial city in Mexico and carrying the less stuff with me (yes I did carry with me 4 batteries canon ones) but I just used 2 on the whole trip, it was interesting to test handheld shots with out bringing tripod or any other kind of rig, I just took with me the 15-35mm lens and lived the results, I will keep mine for a while until canon has a better camera l, but this one is the best camera for me in the moment.

    • @HuFilms

    Nice review, interesting to hear your experiences with it and how you view it, also great clips you are showing you do really nice work. I've used one for past 9 months and love the image, but I'm kind of on the cusp of having to be more concerned about dynamic range etc with the work I do so it was something good to keep in mind. I've been wanting to get another camera for multi camera shoots, and have thought I would definitely be happy with a second R5C if it wasn't for the battery issue. Which is really the one thing I would be concerned about getting another R5C at this point though is kind of what you touched on, regarding releases of the next gen of this and other canon cameras. With the short battery life, the R5C kind of feels like a compromise Canon made to get something to market, so before investing another $4K or so would maybe want to wait until they release either something new in this price range or a next gen R5C that addresses some of these issues. With all the developments from competitors kind of feel that Canon has to keep pushing the envelope in order to stay competitive. Although Canon really does love to come up with cameras that force you to have to make pain in the a** workarounds.

    • @HuFilms
      @HuFilms  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's hard to know if I'd recommend getting another R5C, especially considering you'll have double the problems such as battery and DR. Sounds like a C70 would be a better option, then you'd have the best of both worlds. But the R5C is sweet, particuarly in terms of FF shallow dof, autofocus and detail of image. Thanks for the nice words, I appreciate it. Yeah, got some nice work out of the R5C over the last year.

    • @bobsteinfinkel
      @bobsteinfinkel ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HuFilms yeah that’s why I like it too. I don’t like the C70 big issue for me is the softness of the image I just don’t like it. And everything about it was frustrating. I hate super 35 and didn’t want to sink hundreds more into a focal reducer. R5C for me would be perfect if it didn’t have battery issue

    A camcorder would be better for video. I don’t understand why people use cameras to do video. Camcorders are designed to make video non stop for hours and the batteries are bigger. I see you took my advice and went with a dedicated video rig like a camcorder.

If you are referring to cinema cameras with interchangeable lenses and bigger sensors and not camcorders the price points are much much higher.

    • @HuFilms
      @HuFilms  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it’s perhaps slightly better than the r5. I didn’t do comparisons here. I just feel that the DR is a small bit lacking in this cam. Considering it’s a cinema cam. Most of the cheaper mirrorless cameras such as Pana S52 and Sony A7 would have slightly better DR. Not fully sure either. It exposes east though.

    Iv done everything in my power to not buy 1. Having no clog 2 or production camera gamma is a pain. Even a rec 709 production cam would be great... But I don't like working with raw. Like you said, the 10bit 422 is more than enough.... But once you go 12bit 444...its hard to leave it.

      I have an R5, about to sell an R, lost an R6 to the sea and on the cusp of another R5c or a R5. Hybrid shooter, whatever I buy will be a great improvement over the R but just can't make my mind up on the pros and cons of an R5 vs a R5c.

    What are your thoughts on this vs the R6 Mark ii? Really battling on weather this is the better option, I already have one and need another solid camera for photography and videography. I do a lot of corporate work, as well as TH-cam content and I really do love the idea of having cinema camera features as well as a solid camera for photography.

    • @HuFilms

      If you have an R6 I'd say get this. Just rig it a bit. Much better tools for exposure and the likes of frame rate options etc. More pro video cam and it has the same OS in photo mode.

    Hey great video, thank you for it. I’m a current c100 mkii user but now that I’ve signed multiple brand deals I’m getting requests for 4K files which is unfortunate because I don’t shoot raw, only SOOC and I love working with small file sizes. Can you or anyone speak on the R5C 4K file sizes compared o the c100 mkii? Thanks!

    why is Xavc easier to edit than MP4?

    • @Sodacake
      @Sodacake ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MP4 is more compressed which means it's harder for your NLE to edit it. Usually you have to make proxies of MP4 files to edit them. I'm sure Hugh can provide a more in-depth response but that's the gist of it.

    A great video, thanks. I don't think that 1+ stops will give you too many benefits, taking into account the price of the Red camera, especially considering the 45 MP sensor of the R5C and its photography features.
